As a VW ID.4 owner, I was told that there are a lot of "ghost" fault codes, that even the local dealership couldn't fix. When I got the error: auto hold, they traced it down to a faulty door module and had to replace mine. I have my car back now and also just over 20k miles and it has been driving for a week. We shall see what happens. I know when I got the error: auto hold, I also lost all of the safety systems. Luckily I have hook up.... But once they replaced the door module, it has been ok. Hopefully everything gets cleared for you.

How could there not have been any software updates in two years? At the very least there should have been bug fixes. When you have catastrophic failures like this there should have been fault codes that pointed to the problem, the lack of useful codes says that the software is incomplete. There is no excuse for not fixing the basic functionality by now.

Most Legacy auto manufacturers were very late to the EV market. Because of Dieselgate type scandals they were forced, by Legislators to make long range EV's, decades before they planned to. Computerised EV's need Data Centers, Worldwide & 24-7 Wireless data connections. It's going to take Legacy manufacturers years to build the infrastructure needed, to support their EV's. Tesla started with the advantage of having all this infrastructure...

      @JackRussell021 2 года назад +5

They have been trying to create updates, but the deployment procedures are tricky and apparently sometimes lead to bricked modules.
But the underlying problem is that VW initially allowed module manufacturers to write their own software, and it didn't always play well with other modules. VW is trying to bring it all in house, but that takes time.

    • @joshuarosen465

@@JackRussell021 There's a difference between doing Tesla level updates which add functionality and change the way the vehicle performs and doing the kind of simple updates that legacy companies have always done. When I got a Volt in 2016 there were several software updates over the course of the first year which addressed braking issues and I assume some other things. Obviously those updates were applied by dealers, they weren't OTA, and they didn't add anything to the car, they just fixed things that weren't working correctly but Chevy managed to get those bug fixes out the door in a timely manner. VW should have been able to do at least that much.

Right. With modern cars there should be a way for the dealer to look up logs in the cars computer system to figure out what was going on. The car may well have that capability, however the dealer procedures have not kept up with technology.

As a professional armchair mechanic that has watched many RUclips videos on the subject, usually when you get that many errors at once it's one of three problems.
    1. A bad ground causing multiple computers to lose power.
    2. A bad power feed causing the same issue.
    3. Something taking down the CAN bus. This could be a computer that is going bad, or it could be something as simple as a wire with its insulation rubbed through shorting to ground.

I love my 2021 ID4 (Pro S AWD), however, in October 2022, approximately eight months after ownership and about 20,000 miles in, I was on the freeway in the fast lane when the car suddenly stopped with little to no warning. There was flash indications stating electrical error, battery malfunction, etc. (right before it stopped) and I was stuck on the freeway with no ability to move for about 20 minutes. Cars were zooming past me (thankfully I didn’t get rear ended). It was terrifying! After some time passed, I attempted to start the vehicle again, and thankfully it started, but it was as if nothing happened which was also terrifying. Fast forward to January 26, 2023, I was on Highway 152/Pacheco Pass, where there’s a little to no shoulder area in case of emergency, and my car did the same thing as October 1, 2022. I was driving along on the highway, and then it suddenly stopped with the same notifications prompting a few seconds before. Again, I was stuck and unable to move praying that nobody would we are and me. Thankfully, my car started again. After about 20 minutes and then I turned around towards my Volkswagen dealership in San Jose, CA. Given that this is happened twice within three months, I am convinced that my car is a lemon, and I’m terrified to drive it. The car is at the shop and they still trying to figure out what’s going on. I’m hoping that corporate will work with me. I hope that no one else ever experiences this! It is the most terrifying thing ever to have your car randomly stop on the freeway with little to no warning and be helpless. Thankfully my children were not in the car with me. I hope your issue was resolved. Mine is still pending.

That looks like a combination of few things [armchair expert]:
    1. If the SoC of the 12v battery is LOW it can spew errors like this because it couldnt start the system decently. if this happens every single time then the problem is bigger. Just check 12v SoC/SoH with obd.
    2. Christmas lights like that has a more severe issue under it. mostly related to the gateway module whereby all information comes together and gets send to other modules.
    3. Error related to speed could be also the gateway, but could be the "engine" or even ICAS1/main computer acting up.
The thing is.. errors like this is mostly related to #1. Car doesnt get the chance to "start up" if 12V soh/Soc is bad/low. After closing the car and resting the system for 15 mins will most of the time fix the issue because the system is doing a full reboot if you restart it again internally. IF it doesnt fix it then #2 and #3 is more likely to happen.
    4. last thing could be a going to fail gear knob, but not failed yet. harder to replicate till its really dead [not switching to gears]
GL with the search, easist way is to dump it at a VW dealer when it acts and record everything. eventually they need to act.

I agree with ID.Furkan I have worked as a tech for a GM dealership for 22 years and Honda for 8 years prior to that. A lot of strange electrical faults do lead to a weak or failing 12 volt battery. Cars today have so many computers on board along with endless sensors, radio, HVAC etc putting an enormous load on a 12 volt battery. Now I assume VW checked that I hope at least, but sometimes we need to contact the manufacturer and different engineers to trace the fault. At this point I would hope VW offers the customer a replacement vehicle or a dealer installed software update at the least.

Sorry to hear about your troubles... From my past experience the car is very sensitive to the state of 12V battery (the one in the front "VW-Style-frunk"). I accidentally left my OBD dongle connected over-night and that discharged the 12V battery to a critical level and I had a very similar experience next morning - but was able to drive (without Assistance systems and with the yellow triangle on the dash). With car diagnostics I saw "under-voltage" or "voltage too low" messages (both pertaining the 12V battery, NOT the HV battery) across many modules. The car has a DC/DC converter (module A19) that should automatically keep the 12V battery charged from the HV battery. The 2.3 cars have a newer version of the component compared to 2.1 FE. There has been number of reports on FE cars from Europe that looked very similar to what you are Lisa experiencing... (Kyle - Chris over at Battery Life had these issues with his ID.3). I'd assume the "12V under-voltage " would be the first thing the dealer checked for... I'd just get a good AGM 12V battery and try again... Good luck, hope you are able to have it fixed soon!

Well seeing as none of the 21/22 German-built ID.4s in the United States have yet to receive a single software update are we surprised? The price for being an early adopter with VW I guess! Maybe public shaming will provide the necessary motivation...
As a 2021 ID.4 AWD Pro S owner (delivered late October 2021) I can't say I've seen these exact issues on my car but for sure I've seen various phantom alerts, etc. Generally when this happens I walk away from the car for 5-10 mins and come back and they usually are gone. The rumor mill is that there are certain states the car gets into where the CAN bus gets flooded with signals and it takes some time for the bus to drain/stabilize. Not a solution to be sure but I don't think this is necessarily a hardware problem.
Also - sometimes you just need to reboot the infotainment. I routinely need to do this with Android Auto pairing. Just hold down the power button until the infotainment screen goes blank and then it will restart. Don't worry about doing this while the car is moving, etc. as the infotainment is separate from the car's drive system (which includes the driver display).

The term "bricked" is obviously is the wrong term to use in this case. Something that is "bricked" is basically non functional and dead, and therefore becomes something dead like an actual brick. There is nothing that can "brick" itself multiple times. Bricking something means it is permanently dead, and can't be restored.
That is beside the fact that an electric car can never be "bricked" as that term normally applies to a cell phone, game console or an electronic device. Electric cars are pretty much always repairable with parts, so an EV is really never "bricked" for that reason.

Thanks for your video, I always enjoy seeing them. I own a 2021 ID4 AWD Pro S and have also experienced issues. I took delivery on January 26th and about three weeks later I received the infamous “electrical system not working correctly. Please service vehicle” error message others have complained about. The error message went away a couple of hours later and I received it again in May. I took the car to the dealership and was told everything was normal and there were no issues with the vehicle. Of course, by the time I got into the dealership the message was gone and the technician could not replicate it. In June I received the message again, and this time I drove directly to the dealer with the message still on the screen. They kept the vehicle and two days later I was told the vehicle was unsafe to drive and that they needed to replace an electrical module which supposedly was causing the problem. However, this module is mounted on the front drive motor and therefore the entire motor has to be replaced. The parts are not available and the car is still sitting at the dealership waiting to receive the parts. It has been there for three months already, with no idea when the parts will arrive or even if this will actually solve the issue. Needless to say, I’m extremely upset at VW’s response and I’m considering legal action. By the way, the car has only 4400 miles! It looks like Lisa may want to think about taking legal action for her issues as well. The Magnuson-Moss Act is a federal statute which may be helpful. Other people have had similar problems and it seems that this may be the only way VW will take these issues seriously. I love my car and still want to keep it. I just want VW to stand by their product and do the right thing by their customers.

This is really the first thing any EV owner should do - change the 12v battery. It seems too simple, but it's very true that a low or not-so-great 12v battery can cause many electronic 'issues' that really aren't issues at all, but they just can't function properly without the FULL 12v battery power. Many of us may even decide to carry a new 12v battery WITH us, as a backup, or at least a 12v Battery Charger, if not. Even using jumper cables from another car's 12v battery may solve the issue, temporarily.
Yes, it 'could' be a more serious issue, but the simple 12v battery seems to be the easy culprit in many situations.

“Generally, California Lemon Law imposes a four-year deadline to file a lemon claim. The four-year limit typically starts from when the consumer experienced warrantable problems with his/her vehicle.Feb 24, 2022”
    Best of luck.

My wife loves her 2021 ID.4 PRO. (I have a 2021 Model 3 SR+.) We have taken the VW on 1,500+ mile road trips, and many jaunts to the Bay Area, as well as her daily driver. No issues after some 15,000 miles.
I do hope she gets her issues resolved one way or another. It’s frustrating to have a car on the fritz, especially a new car. It can understandably make one feel insecure each time you get in the car.
In my 50+ years of driving, I’ve had several instances where mechanics were befuddled by the issue my car presented to them. They’d try this and that to resolve the issue (and these were excellent mechanics, btw). So an issue that confounds is not limited to EVs.
Best of luck and keep us appraised how it all goes.

As others have mentioned, sounds like multiple modules not able to communicate properly. Other than what people mentioned about a bad power or ground somewhere or shorted CAN bus, also likely that part of the car is just staying asleep. Would want to get the software updated. Many issues with power-moding are common. As an easy temporary fix, briefly disconnecting the 12V battery to cause everything to reset will usually fix these types of issues when they are sporadic like this.

This seems very similar to what happened to my ID.4 Pro S in December of 2021 after having it for less than a month. The inverter failed. There were dozens of error codes and would only go into Neutral. I called VW Road Assistance and they arranged for a tow to my dealer. We had to push the ID.4 out of the garage to get it onto the flat bed. The repair was simple but the part took weeks to get.

@kyle This looks like a typical shorted CAN wire - the cluster is actually complaining about "No communication with X, Y, Z, ...". Can be either water ingress in a plug or maybe an improperly connected plug. Looks like the drivetrain CAN which connects the front radar, parking brake, inverter, ...If any of the plugs on the line is shorting (occasionaly through bumps), all connected ECUs lose CAN packets and hence the complaint of the cluster and hence no stored fault code.

@@TheExumRidge Dealers are generally not too familiar with CAN details, but you can ask them to run an "ECU enumeration", i.e. they try to connect to all ECUs that the car should have and their software checks which ones (plural!) are not responding. Then, a technician with patience should go through the VW wiring diagram ("ERWIN") and check which CAN connects the ones that din't respond. I hope that helps, wish you good luck!

I have Skoda Enyaq (MEB platform) and got exactly the same problem after 31,000 km driven.
When I drove the car at 100 km/h speed I suddenly got a message that I have a broken parking brake. I stopped and called a service. They told me that if the exclamation mark on the dashboard is not red (was orange), you can still drive the car. After a couple hours I went for a charging station. There was a small slope and right after charging when I switched on the car and switched to N driving position car moved back (20 cm). That was enough for the car to completely stopped and refused to drive. Every time I switched to D position, it automatically switched back to N. I called the service and they told me that it is not possible to fix that by myself and I need to evacuate the car to the service.
For the moment, the car is still in service (will be there for 2 weeks). They changed parking brake pump (was broken) and need to change something else (not sure if it is related to this problem).

Watched this video twice. I also love my 2021 Pro S ID.4. However at times it can be unpredictably quirky. I had a brick type situation this evening. The car was in my driveway at home sitting there for over day and half. Had to run a typical run out to the store errand and the car surprisingly had many error msgs, but all seemed related to a low 12 volt battery error which I assumed caused all the other issues.. I called VW emergency road side assistance (which was suggested in some of the msgs). With this 12 volt battery error I could not put the car in Drive, N, or Reverse. One of the error msgs said that you may need to drive the car to charge the 12 Volt battery while other msgs said stop driving the car call VW for service. VW emergency assistance said they would send me a tow and take the car to the dealer for me. The tow company then called me in route and said if I can not get the car in N they couldn't tow the car so they canceled the call. VW Emergency assistance informed me that the tow company was changed. Most of the roadside assistance was handled via txt msg which at times seemed frustrating and when I got an operator it seem like if my answers to scripted questions did not match the pick list offered, there was really no good options to describe my issue. The second tow truck arrived and he also had a tow truck that if I could get my car in Neutral he couldn't tow the car. He was very resourceful and tried several things including getting into the car using a hidden key in my remote and then hooked up a booster battery device to my car and then it started to function normally. I then was able to drive the car to the dealership. I also a few months ago received the long awaited software upgrade, but that took about a month at the dealership to finally install it. They sort of warned me that they have experienced problems that require hard to get replacement computer parts. Sort of funny but they supplied me with a gasoline loaner car.

The cars power windows would not roll down (?) Then I looked at my/her fob. Her fob and a metal Carabiner for attaching it to her purse/attache' etc., mine did not. Could it be that the Carabiner "Shielded" fob from the car? The Carabiner was very closely matched to the shape of the ID4 fob. ID4 Pro S 2021 AWD 11k miles
Frst EV me and the wife did a lot of research before committing, got the car and are in love with it and its performance. 3 months in rearview camera stopped working, no big deal things happened. Dealer replaced it no questions asked. At around 8K miles I was charging in the garage with the VW provided 110 plug and as I was getting something out of the car charging port went red and a bunch of warnings started popping up on the screen, Electrical system failure and drive system failure, obviously catastrophic car would not start. Got out of the car unplugged it, close the door, locked it and let it sit for about 30 seconds then turned it on again and it worked, all warnings had disappeared I immediately contacted the dealer shit and made an appointment, drove the car for about 3 days and the issue did not return.
When I dropped it off at VW they ran test and they determined that it was a "high voltage" issue but they needed further testing, a week later I was contacted by VW and told that it was likely that a motor needed to be replaced because they couldn't figure out what cause the issue and the code remained, I guess they figured by making such a drastic repair it would surely catch the problem. After being told that I started looking into potential buy back or replacement under Nevada lemon law. A couple days later I was contacted again and told that they had reached out to VW technitians and were told that it was likely a software update, they were given access to an "unreleased" update and they installed it in my car or at least that's what the told me and the error code was gone. Am a bit skeptical about the software story since it wasn't listed in the repair paperwork or on the ID4s update screen but its been almost 5 months since then and the issues hasn't returned.
On another occasion while driving on the freeway multiple warning started popping up related to the drive assist, every thing and anything related to it turned off cruise control, lane centering, dynamic road sign were gone for a few miles then they popped back on and it hasn't happened again. All in all we love the ID4 and have no regrets...yet but it is scary to encounter these issues sometimes makes me wonder if we jumped on the EV craze too soon.

The car-net took two visits to fix and they had to factory reset the vehicle. The brakes were loud and squeaked all the time. The random faults and the car going into park and stopping was the worst. After the last service visit where they couldn't fix the brakes or diagnose the errors they stopped responding to inquiries about the problems they were researching I dumped it moved on. The great thing is the value was great because of the shortage of vehicles.

the real EV "beta testers" would've been the first adopters of the Leaf and Model S more than a decade ago... Contemporary EVs are typically very well fleshed out, and the charging infrastructure is quickly catching up (understandably so, as installing such a large number of stations takes a considerable amount of logistics). Being a happy owner of a Lucid Air GT and a Model X Plaid, I have neither encountered any comparable issues with my previous EVs nor heard of any such issues amongst my friends and acquaintances. I am of the opinion that issues like the one described in the video are pretty rare, and occurrences are comparable to the rates that ICE cars run into similar issues that hinder functionality. Even if they were to occur more frequently, the tradeoffs from not having to maintain the car are well worth it IMO.

I could still drive, but planning stops and charging with no feedback was not going to work. After driving, turning off the car and starting it up an hour later, the screen was back and I crossed my fingers for the uneventful trip. Back at the dealer they kept the car overnight thinking a replacement screen might be required. They couldn’t replicate the problem but the VW “fix” was to unplug the screen for 10 minutes, reconnect and “keep your eyes on it”. I didn’t know my VW ran on Windows 7.

I have glitches on my 1st Edition from time to time, but they do clear. I have an ongoing issue where it tells me that the SOS feature is unavailable. I took it in for that twice…the last visit they reset the unit. I didn’t believe this would solve the issue. It didn’t. I’ve always thought it is an antenna problem, or main unit problem. (I suppose it could be a wire as well.) The other software glitches were acceptable the first few months. Having gone 18 months with no software update from Volkswagen is inexcusable. For this lady’s car, I think starting the lemon process is a wise next step. Also, if she hasn’t gone through Volkswagen’s customer service (opened a case), that should be a top priority. I also do not think the dealer is faultless here. They should have had VW get an area representative involved. If it were me, I wouldn’t even be having direct conversations with the dealer-I’d be going through Volkswagen and having them coordinate everything.

Important video and sobering. I tend not to accept that what we have here is a problem isolated to a particular vehicle. To my mind what this story speaks to is the inadequacy of the self diagnostics built into the design. The software problems with the ID.4 have been so bad that they got the head of VW fired as noted in an article on BLoomberg, but this looks to go deeper than that. It has to do with diagnostics for hardware components. If you want a highly reliable digital system it requires a lot of self checking features built in at the hardware level. It requires meaningful self diagnostic messaging. Ghostly problems? Startup diagnostics? Run time diagnostics? If VW is so drastically unsophisticated with their software why is it a surprise their design of the hardware for digital systems is also lacking. Strategically to get help for this clearly most reasonable and worthy lady, it is useful to portray the problem as a one-off - REPLACE THIS LEMON. Whereas I agree with the proposed solution under the circumstances, I think the implications are much broader. And frankly, we are entering a new era where road vehicles are increasingly sophisticated digital systems on wheels. And if VW were the only company with this diagnostic vulnerability, it would be hard to believe. Having a helpful, reasonable, local dealer at such times becomes pretty important. Driving a vehicle that acts like this on a public highway seems an unacceptable risk. Government oversight and regulation is understood to be required for the aircraft industry. It may come to that with cars. How do you coordinate the people who design the software to interpret road markings with the people who put out the road markings?

I really hope they have an ota update soon though.. getting tired of waiting. I only use the EA charging stations maybe once every month or so but it is so inconsistent.. it either doesn't connect, charges at a low rate/50kw or the darn things are broken. German cars put too much redundancy on safety but not enough on daily reliability. I guess a few sensors in these cars are not working fine, which stops the entire series of safety and assistance systems. Just like someone can't open a door if the door handle is stuck.

Again, I think the problem is that those making the description of the software is so well paid that they have a private driver and do not drive at all,.and the programmers have to follow the description . Even if they see that something is not well designed they have to follow it, if they starts to think they get fired.
In this case it might be that the different parts of the control software do not talk to each other. The software should be able to try to debug if there are sensor faults, if a sensor gives an error, or is outside range, reading of the other sensors might tell if that is a real thing or not. And shutting down the car is the last option on a fault...

Everyone knows that VW has had one hell of a problem with software, it’s the reason they delayed the launch of the ID3 and it’s been well published that it’s an ongoing problem. I’ve a Kia Nero and never had a problem in 2 years of ownership, although I would say their app is still not that great.

It looks like the electronic parking brake is probably at least the focus of one of the issues… she’s probably on sw 2.1 like my ID4 pro s AWD

One of the most annoying things about EVs is the incompetence and ignorance of the people at the dealerships, from the salespeople to the "mechanics". They have little or no knowledge of anything to do with the products at their dealership. This is a real turn-off. You can show up at a dealership, completely ignirant of a particular model, still know more than the salesperson, and can figure out what you don't know faster than the salesperson can. The salespeople are COMPLETELY USELESS!!!
One salesperson ran their mouth about the front storage on the ID.4, and was dumbfounded when I showed him there was no front storage. ANYTHING the car salespeople tell you is likely false.
Yes, when the EV fails, they do not seem to care, seem to have no way to even formulate a fix, and never seem to understand how catastrophic these constant failures are for daily use, when an ICE vehicle would be fine. It just floored me in this video that they essentially told her to BRING IT BACK WHEN THIS HAPPENS AGAIN. This should NEVER happen. Full stop! This is a 100% failure. They should refund her money, so sue can buy a qualoty vehicle. It is INEXCUSABLE that these failures happen, at all!

You had mentioned that Lisa was having some issues with her VW a few months ago, and I was wondering if they had been cleared up. Apparently not. I hope she gets the issues sorted out, especially since she needs a dependable car for work.

Even Hyundai needs to ramp up on the software end. Especially the phone app. There are small nuances that needs fix on the infotainment system.
And VW needs to make sure their charging stations well.
Have you ever faced these many failures with gasoline pumps? Probably government needs to step in a bit in this?

At least, I think it was him... perhaps there are clones. But if they are clones, then I guess they all are him. This is definitely looking like an Orphan Kyle Black scenario.

I'm glad I picked the KIA Soul EV over ID.4. The ID.3 issue is most likely to be related to 12V battery.

  • @andreverville9492
    @andreverville9492 2 года назад

The computer needs 12V to perform its duty of making the car function. The computer monitors its power source very closely and if it sees a glitch or surge, it is Red Alert and non critical subsystems are disconnected to prolong life, creating a long list of error messages and instructions related to unavailable functions. It happened to me once in May on my ID.4 at 12900km while I was driving on an Interstate and the car restarted fine after a full shutdown (I had to exit the car and re-enter). The "Check engine" light disappeared the next day and the VW dealer did not find what triggered the alarm sequence. It never reproduced since (now at 25000). Can be anything, like induced currents in wires from a nearby radio transmitter (a truck CB with an illegal power boost besides you, anything like that). EV cars will probably require some computer failover systems or at least some form of UPS power circuitry. Or for me, never go back in the USA, because I never had any problem in Canada!

I keep trying to post a Bloomberg link but RUclips may not be liking it, basically there is a massive software issue at VW right now. I have an Audi Q4 and the connected tech doesn't work at all. I've not had a single software update either.

Diess literally lost his job over the software fiasco and his mismanagement of CARIAD. Oliver Blume is on the hot seat now. Then you have Scott Keough who ducked any responsibility by side-stepping to Scout. Lots of finger-pointing over at VAG/VWoA...

The biggest problem is often their service and their lack of will to fix the bugs they have..
And their lack of will to share their knowledge about their bug between their local workshops..
Its almost as if they are waiting for peoples garenti to run out (they have done that to alot of people)
Try google their service when people come with the problems you talk about, because the behavior vw have is very simuler to back when we had dieselgate..
They dont care about the laws or the costumers, all that matters is money

In Europe, the OTA updates are finally running for all existing vehicles that have received V2.4 from the dealer (hopefully be the last update that does not come OTA).
There have been a few other updates before this.
I have no idea why there have been no updates in the US yet, it should be the same software. Already with 2.4 most of the problems should be fixed, with 3.0 there will be significant improvements in infotainment, navi, consumption, charging speed and more..
But this looks like a specific problem with this car, and of course there are error codes at VW that normally point to the problem. Why that does not help in this case is also a mystery to me

Software updates can enhance things or correct problems, yes. But if the programming is correct before you sell them...updates should never be necessary.

The first 20,000 miles trouble free and then issues begin to occur... This seems to be the Norn for VW and many other vehicles unfortunately as brands. With modern vehicles being so overly electronic, there is no excuse for manufactures not to be able to troubleshoot from fault code recordings. This illustrates many manufacturers try to produce what they don't fully understand.

Lol been trying to get them to fix my recall on my id4. That is impossible to get them to do. They keep on saying we are waiting for the factory to open. Then when it opens they say they are waiting for training to fix it . It is the drive battery recall on my car. Recalls number 22V162000
