Nice to see a national news/feature story about this enduring event of the Hawaiian culture. It deserves a spotlight, showcasing the rich history of the native Hawaiian people and the resurgence of tradition and language that has taken place now for over 40 years. Imua!
Folk and ethnic dances music stories and culture needs to be preserved around the world. My own family after coming to the US have lost their traditions and assimilated. It makes me sad , I went and rediscovered them and my family is like wth are you doing we are American. Its fine to be a american citizen, but you dont have to give up your culture to do it.
I lived on the big island for several years. The Hawaiian dancing and singing is a beautiful tradition. I listened to Hawaiian old and new music and watched the Hulu dancing. What a gift!
I am so very glad that the culture of Hula and the Hawaiian people is being celebrated- I have a deep appreciation of various cultures and being from New Orleans understand that when I was little, it was considered shameful in many ways to be considered “Cajun”, just as one example, and how freeing it was for Cajun culture to be embraced and celebrated as well as my other backgrounds (French, Spanish, Irish, German)… cultural heritage is our history and ancestry. Songs, music, dance, stories, food, are all part of this. Excellent article. Why not celebrate and understand cultural differences instead of dismissing and fearing
Agreed! New Orleans is a special place because of all the mixture of cultures. I've visited once and had a blast. Also, I always have a bottle of Cajun spice in my kitchen cabinet!
Everytime I watch hula - alone with my PC or live - I get all weepy & my heart aches, though not necessarily in a bad way. No clue why that happens, but it speaks to how much I adore indigenous dance, especially the Hula.
Thank you so much for this segment! The world needs to know the beauty of the culture in Hawaii. Merrie Monarch is an exciting time. We literally watch hula for hours on end and never tire of it. Everybody is happier during Merrie Monarch.
If you haven't been to Merrie Monarch, you are missing a huge treat. I watch the first half of each of the evenings on Hawaii News Now. It takes place the week after Easter every year. Night #1 is Miss Aloha Hula, Night 2 is Kahiko (ancient hula) Night 3 is Auwana (modern hula). They also have a very down home parade on Sat. morning. Takes place in Hilo. Like Tahitian pearls-the Tahitians are at the dynamite craft fair with pearls and more. Patrick will be bringing a free show to the hula mound at Prince Kuhiu beach on O'ahu pretty soon. He is a kumu who works in San Francisco and he is very beloved to the entire ethnic dance community here. Thank for this great report.
Hawaiʻi has so many traditional arts that have deep and rich significance on par with any of the finest most deatailed and expensive arts on Earth today. I will always be proud to have been a born and raised Hawaiian. Btw that shell lei the gentleman is wearing at 3:34 will set you back at least $5,000.
"Talking Story" is the way the traditions are kept in focus through Hawaiian generations. Hula is also a way to share the smiles, emotions and flow of the stories. It's the auspicious, interactive and grateful library that lives in everybody. Mahalo🌺
I'm so glad that the Merrie Monarch festival was featured on your program. Hula is such a wonderful form of dance. Please consider airing future segments about other forms of traditional dance.
So glad this part of their culture survived the madness of men. The keiki - children hula is so cute. A lot of magic no, Mana here. Thanks for doing this CBS. Mana
Thank you for presenting the culture of dance, in this case Hula, as a spiritual practice, a cultural practice, not just as entertainment. Well done CBS. Deep respect to the teachers and traditional practices of the Hawaiian culture. Mahalo.
I just learned that hula is pretty serious and spiritual. All these years, I thought it was for a cute show-and-tell for the tourists that come to Hawaii for vacation.
Mahalo for sharing. We all look forward to the week after Easter. Merrie Monarch time and Big Mahalos to the Halaus for giving it all you do. Till 2025❤❤❤
🌺 Actually, it's so secretive, especially before competition, because the kumus are afraid that other team(s) might copy or steal their ideas, costume designs/style/colors, or movements. It's like a secret food recipe that you don't want to unveil too soon and copycats making it before you even debut.
I can't believe I lived in Hawai'i for 5 years and not once attended a Merry Monarch festival. Looking back, I really didn't take full advantage of my time there.
I just love the big island. 🏝️. The Waikoloa Beach Marriott is just right. It’s on the beach, their ocean view rooms are just delightful and you’re walking distance to Island Gourmet, with its killer poke, fresh fruit and the tourist style souvenirs.
I feel privileged just to have watched this. I love how beautiful Hawaiian dance and culture are. I’m afraid we may loose our cultural connections over time and wish they would add a category to the Olympics for indigenous island dance. They could have held the competition in Tahiti this year where the surfing is held. They would be accustomed to the weather and be inspired. Imagine or maybe already have something like this and I just don’t know about it.
I love Hawaii. I love Hawaiian culture. I would move there in a heartbeat, after visiting the big island couple of times in the last few years. Would love to retire there. But I don’t think they need another old white guy. Sadly.
There are more Hawaiian people living on the mainland than on the islands now. Cost of real estate. There are schools all over the Pacific Northwest. aswarm as Las Vegas- You can find groups in many states.
@@LilyGazou I live in the Southwest, but I'll look around to see if there are any performances in my area. Yes, I know about the pricing out of native Hawaiian's. It's shameful and a big problem with the way America does business.
Maybe. But this seems unique to the people who first populated those islands. Try to imagine the journey of getting there in the first place... in the middle of the ocean.
It is a shame that anything that was different from what the yt man seen in his hometown was considered savage or pagan instead of learning about it. Would have saved so many different people
Also, when the United States overthrew the government of the Kingdom of Hawaii, the Hawaiian language was banned in schools until the 1980’s. I don’t think it was for cultural/religious reasons, though. I guess it would be for the assurance of retention of political power, like Japan banned the Korean language during its occupation of Korea.
Anything to disparage Christianity, which the royalty all for the most part sans the very early ones where believers in Christ also. It was a renaissance by the Monarch for that exact reason- non demonic worship. I’m Hawaiian. I’ve danced hula. I’ve been friends with the many gay hula instructors, over the years, who’ve comprised the artful competition
Lee, U left out a bunch of "stuff" - why no talk w/the people who run the festival (my family)? ... AND, the solo title is: "Miss Aloha Hula"! ... what U said is the title for the beauty pageant.
I am such a mix of various cultures and heritages there wouldn’t be enough hours in a day to honor those traditions let alone learn the languages. My parents were such a mix even family culture/heritage recipes were not passed on to my generation. We are fed the line over and over again about the great melting pot of our nation and all it seems to be is we of diverse culture/heritage get slapped in the face continuously with one or another “special” culture/heritage seeking attention! Just seems confusing to praise those who shun diversity and maintain their culture/heritage with secrecy and exclusionary behavior. It is just not this hula culture, in South Florida the language of Cubans and those from South America has been used destructively to exclude native born residents from employment. The government sanctioned the acceptance of foreign languages in such extreme measures employers have resorted to excluding English only speakers. Yet in present day Miami Beach, Florida you will be given orders in some version of Spanish ONLY by the traffic officer directing pedestrians crossing the street.
So a hula competition. “The Olympic Games are a series of international athletic competitions that take place every four years in different countries.”
they were just saying its like the Olymics of Hula. Merrie monarch is the most perstegious and strict Hula Competitions in the world. some of the best, like the Academy of Hawaiian Arts, whom didn't place this year
The Olympics showcase physical achievements practiced by millions around the world, every 4 years Merrie Monarch showcases physical endeavors taught to thousands(?).. annually
This is being shown because They are Americans.... What about other cultures.. that have their traditions ..??? THIS was interesting 🧐🤔.. just my opinion
I don't think that there's even one little girl who has never gone through their "Hula" stage. Growing up in the U.S., I remember my sisters and I getting out our mother's half-slips or taking a bath towel and making a 'Hula skirt' out of it! We would look for long stemmed grasses and flowering plants out in our back yard to make our Hula crowns! The Hula dance is loved all across the U.S. -- it is woven into the fabric of America! .
Glad Hawaiians are reclaiming their heritage and culture.
