  • Co-founded by George Balanchine in 1948, New York City Ballet is considered one of the best dance companies in the world, and the foundation of ballet in America. Correspondent Serena Altschul talks with the company's current leaders Jonathan Stafford and Wendy Whelan, and with legendary dancer Suzanne Farrell and principal ballerina Megan Fairchild, about NYCB and its affiliated School of American Ballet, and how, at 75, the company is catering to an increasingly younger audience.

    NYCB has incredible choreographers but I believe Justin Peck and his collaborations with the likes of Sufjan Stevens and Dan Deacon have played a huge part in keeping ballet relevant and appealing to younger audiences. Please recognize him also! 🙏🏻

    Mom saw Plisetskaya and Pavlova at NYCB, studied at School of American Ballet (Balanchine a cold technician, took the joy out of performance). Lots of great stories, like Baryshnikov as head of ABT firing Alexander Godunov because too much sex appeal. Carry on, NYCB!🎉

      Hate to correct you but it's impossible that your mother saw Pavlova. She died in 1931 way before the company was founded in 1948.

      When one hears the name Pavolva connected to ballet, one thinks only of Anna.
      She (Mia P.) might have guested for NYCB, but was more Ballet Russe.

    I've only seen two at NYCB -- both Peck-choreographed, and loved them. (And although not related, Peck's Illinoise on Broadway ends on August 10th -- if you haven't seen it, run to get tickets before it ends!) I really hope Peck gets a series dedicated to his works at NYCB+Broadway. There's an energy to NYCB that other companies don't have; they really are the best of the best!

    My feet are not ballerina friendly, unfortunately. Greek feet

    I certainly appreciate the grueling hard work, skill, & athleticism required in ballet, but I find-for me-ballet to be dull & repetitive. I’ve seen many ballets and even two by the New York City Ballet, but I have yet to see one that is “fun” and “spontaneous.”
    I’m glad there are people who DO enjoy it sincerely and wholeheartedly, but I’m just not one of them.

      bballet is a language. going to see a foreign language film in a language you don't understand without subtitles would probably be boring too...

    • @pibbitybibbity
      @pibbitybibbity Месяц назад

      @@bobloblaw9679 So they’re speaking a language that most people don’t know and they don’t bother to help anyone understand? Then it truly is elitist, then. Most people that say they like/love ballet only say that because they’re afraid not to, that people will judge them as somehow “less than.” There’s a heavy “The Emperor With No Clothes” vibe to ballet.
      Foreign films provide subtitles because they make art that isn’t classist.

    • @adelaferreira4575
      @adelaferreira4575 Месяц назад +2

      Classical ballet,modern dance,jazz dance are not elitist,some people have the soul to understand and some don’t ,it takes maybe 10 years of practice to make a professional ballet dancer,and that’s the beauty of it,it’s hard work that turns into those beautiful performances that we see ,taking a little dance class will make some people understand how hard and wonderful it is to achieved that status ,ballet dancer !

    • @pibbitybibbity
      @pibbitybibbity Месяц назад

      @@adelaferreira4575 I love modern dance and jazz dance. So your personal attack on me not having “the soul to understand” was stupid and you’re obviously too ignorant to read the entire comment as I stated I appreciated the hard work, athleticism, and skill it takes to perform ballet. So be careful, if your nose turns any higher if it rains you might drown.
