- In college Mickalene Thomas studied pre-law because she wanted to change the world. But then she saw an exhibition of photographs by Carrie Mae Weems, and she knew then what she wanted to do. The 53-year-old artist, who creates pieces celebrating women, is now being featured in an exhibition at the Broad Museum in Los Angeles titled "Mickalene Thomas: All About Love." Correspondent Tracy Smith talks with Thomas about her muses and her mixing of media, from collage and silkscreen to rhinestones.

I was lucky to have been able to see her art exhibit at The Broad when I was visiting L.A., and it was one of the best exhibits I have ever been to. I not only went through it the first time but also back through it again to see what other details I could catch. My favorite room, besides the replica of her row house, was the room with Eartha Kitt's song playing, Angelitos Negros. I really loved all of it, but this room was amazing. This exhibit celebrates the beauty of all types of Black women and recalls the Black experience in America. I loved Thomas' collages which looked similar to Pablo Picasso's work. If you live or are visiting the L.A. area, put this exhibit on your list of things to do.
So cool that Weems' photos inspired her to be an artist.

This is absolutely beautiful! I love hearing the backstories of renowned artists because there’s something in it that’s relatable and for me personally serves as a confirmation that if I keep moving forward in my own journey, I too could potentially inspire someone else one day the very same way. She has very beautiful work and I wish I had the money to own one myself lol. Those are one of a kind pieces, truly unique! ❤❤❤

Keep in mind she has plenty of assistants to help her these day. Disappointing they didn't show that, and made it seem she does everything herself.

SO inspiring! Thank you for this great profile. On manifesTEAMS we talk about how OPPORTUNITIES often mask themselves as OBSTACLES. Artist Mickalene Thomas is a perfect example. She birthed her unique, world-defining style out of LIMITATION!. “My life was defined by limitation. Paint is expensive. So I used what was around me, accessible, affordable. A lot of my process came out of limitations, but I work within it, around it, through it and above it.” Congrats on such an inspiring level of human ingenuity!
using found objects in order to make art is as old as time. not taking away from ms. thomas’s obvious talent, but she isn’t doing anything new or particularly groundbreaking. this is old stuff
