  • in this video: Breaking Tradition: Unveiling Sustainable Architecture with a Landmark Structural Brick Masonry Home, this video created by brick masonry, building culture you Tube Channel.
    In our full home tour of our brick European Farmhouse styled 1900 Oso project, located in Wheeler District in Oklahoma City, we're not just showing you around a beautiful home; we are letting you in on many of our strategies and secrets in creating a home that both looks and feels amazing and is built to last for centuries. From the open floor-plan, to architectural details like the arch and fireplace, we consider every detail with intentional thought and design, making this home stand out as a piece of art.
    Many people know us as the 'brick guys' and that's true because brick is our medium of choice, but really we are composers of entire buildings and houses and feelings. We design the floor plan, every detail of the house, and oversee every step of the building. As a piece of art, each home is a story that unfolds over time. We love how this story came together and hope you will follow along and share!

    This is a true generational home. A lucky family is going to have this as part of the magic of their history for many years.
    Well done to the entire team for pulling this off - it feels really good to see that this kind of craft is alive and well today.
    I am completely blown away. Well done, well done, well done! ❤🤯

    The brick work is literally fantastic. (quick secret , butcher blocks are supposed to be thin strips of wood glued together-with just an oil for finish-if its actually going to be used as a functional butchers block. more rustic feel and finish, but in theory, itll be chopped on, messed on, scratched, burned and all the rest-a 'patina' over time :))

      True butcher block is end grain.

    • @BuildingCulture
      @BuildingCulture  4 месяца назад

      Have done that, but also like custom red oak! A lot of those butcher blocks are just pre made out of oak, so we are just making custom and bigger size which looks cooler in our opinion!

    Great Build. As an architectural salvage/antique dealer I love it when architects and builders "get it'. I wish I could find more about infill live/works as we have an 1884 Italianate live/work that we operate our shop out of but also live in. We own almost and 1/2 a city block around us and are wanting to do a mixed use small neighborhood development on our property but our city planner is really stuck in the past.

      Ah yes, that would be awesome! And that is most municipalities: getting in the way of good urbanism and design. Hope it can happen!

    @DearModern would have some thoughts about the staircase placement right in front of the door, but it really is such a beautiful project. So many thoughtful design details. Would love to see a cost breakdown/project timeline on a house like this. I've watched a few (usually young) house developers put their builds up on RUclips, and the cost to build a typical ticky-tacky American home, even when built w/the goal of making a profit, seem quite high. Is this a spec house or did you have a client?
    Also: A vid on the foundation build for a house like this would be really interesting! Do you incorporate traditional foundation methods as well? Or modern?

    • @BuildingCulture
      @BuildingCulture  10 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks! Yea, know what you mean on staircase but with size and context (very much like a town house) we still think it’s best decision for this house-but do like vestibules when we can have them!
      Gonna start sharing lots of technical stuff over 2024 and beyond. Can follow here: open.substack.com/pub/buildingculture?r=2sjn8x&

    I'm am curious as to the mortar you used for this build. I assume the brick is somewhat soft, being so old?

    • @BuildingCulture
      @BuildingCulture  10 месяцев назад +1

      Yep they’re soft. Using a real lime mortar. No Portland. Graymont 5.0 out PHL

    Signed up for the newsletter because I'd love to see cost breakdown. Really looking forward to building one of these. Some prices in the past few years have been a gut punch. Five years ago $100/ft and now builders in my area is $300/sf!

    • @BuildingCulture
      @BuildingCulture  10 месяцев назад

      Awesome! Yea, it’s CRAZY. It costs us 30 to 40% more to build a house today than 3 years ago. And same with every builder we talk to. That’s not going to change anytime soon, and likely to get worse over coming decades with worsening housing shortage, trade shortage, and permanent more expensive goods

    As an interior architect and a big fan of traditional architecture, I love this house, it's very harmonious and stays true to its essence. I appreciate your knowledgeable incorporation of philosophical and cultural elements into the design,it’s well done! I hope more people embrace traditional architecture because it's not only sustainable and environmentally friendly but also contributes to long-lasting beauty and cultural continuity

    This house is beautiful! Is it 3 layers of brick on either side of the insulation or 3 total? Also does this type of build need to be reinforced with rebar?

    • @BuildingCulture
      @BuildingCulture  8 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you! Here we’ve done a 2 + 1 tied together with basalt reinforced ties. Other times we do 2+2. Yes, rebar due to code. But could build unreinforced easily!

    Fire place nice. But needs a thick stone mantle or marble. A bit more architecture as it is the heart and centre of room.
