Dude, good effort for making this tutorial & getting it uploaded. I applaud your attempt to use hand tools too. A bow saw is fine for cutting up branches & firewood but it is by no means a precision tool for cutting a tenon. Ditto that for a chainsaw unless you have a precision guide such as an Alaskan mill set up. Chain mortisers are quite expensive because they lock on to your work and don't move.
The tool for a relative beginner to use is a circular saw, with 30 tooth or more blade. That is followed up by a chisel then a slick for finishing. Proper mortise & tenon joints work best when they fit tightly. It is way too easy for a new woodworker to ruin a beam with those less than appropriate cutting tools. You should check out the videos at Shelter Institute- they have some great training videos.

Thanks! I was trying to show that many times you can use a lot of different tools for the same job, but you are right, they are often not the best tool for it. I will check out the Shelter Institute channel!

Great video, I have a general question. If someone was using Mortise and Tenon joinery for a post and beam, which is preferred, stronger, or even standard practice to have serve as the tenon part of the joint, the post or the beam?

In the 1920's post & beam barn we have they used mortises in the posts, and tenons on the beams.
