Matt Osso more often than not, people who just don't get into them. Trust me, I am not trying to sound arrogant and proclaim this story as the pinnacle of storytelling (though it does come close), but for example, I tried to get my brother and mother to watch the show (while it was still good) and they just outright refused despite high praises from myself and a ton of more people. This non stop high praise from me eventually got on my brother's nerves and he started telling me that he hates the story, despite never experiencing it, I was just so infatuated that I constantly tried to get him to watch it and it eventually repelled him from the show when all I tried was to get him to experience an incredibly interesting story. So, from my experience, people who usually "hate" ASOIAF/GoT don't even give it a proper chance. It should also be noted that there are a LOT of characters and houses, that it can get a bit hard to keep track of. I personally had to stop at one point, then re-read from beginning with the knowledge I had in order to piece in the pieces.
Im not really a huge fan of his books, however I don't hate him as a writer, I really just wasn't sucked into the universe or a majority of the characters and found the universe sprinkled with high fantasy elements, but more of the lore focused on the houses and people whereas im more into fantasy involving high fantasy elements. The Malazan books and wheel of time series along with the Witcher books are more up my alley. Sometimes it just doesn't click with people. I really like Dostoyevsky and find plenty of people who don't like his or Tolstoys works and they both have very interesting characters.

AGOT is the 1st novel i ever read and even though i know whats going to happen, it is still amazing. ASOIAF as of now is the greatest story I know of from all the shows and movies.
Not every book is for everyone, but why would someone waste their time focusing on books they don't even like by constantly talking about it on the internet? That's the part which makes no sense.
I think the amount of negative focus something gets is a sign of its overall impact. I'm of two minds about GRRM's work. I love the world building, the characters and the attention to detail. I prefer my stories to be a little lighter in tone, and a little more hope filled. That might be why even if you have negative feelings about it, this series might preoccupy your imagination. There's a lot to digest and respond to, hopefully in a respectful and thoughtful manner, but this is the internet, so you know...
because GRRM has a terrible influence on culture and disseminates his idiocy via TV shows, video games and poorly written fanfiction fuck-novels about rapist families ravaging each other. not interesting at all.
Why write somebody just to complain? Because of entitlement of course. Half the world honestly believes artists *owe* them something just for being a fan. I'm not sure why. You paid money to buy a book and you're owed a book. End of transaction. But people now-a-days take it further and start acting like once they become a fan of something, they own that something somehow, and it better amuse them or else. Not enough people are telling those idiots to f-off.
IchibanOjousama note what Micah Clark said. There's for example people who say: "George is taking a long time to release his next book. It's a tiresome wait, but he is his own man and none of us have the right to force him to do anything, anyways I am sure he is working hard at it, and if he is going slower, it's because there are things he has to work out. As he also said, age does not add enthusiasm. All we can do is wait, and let an artist take as much time as he needs to create a masterpiece, since at the end of the day it is HIS masterpiece, not ours. We are just the observers and fans, not the ones whose story it is. We are looking forward to his books whenever they come out." Then you have people who's attitudes are like this: "George you lazy fat fuck get the fuck in your room and write your novels so MY evenings are more eventful and interesting." Guess which one is toxic and should be told to fuck off.
IchibanOjousama there’s a big difference between reviews and just sending hate messages. A review is a break down. Most of the internet is full of people who just want to start shit. Your comment fails big time
He already knows. He is very upset about what HBO did with his IP but explicitly blames himself for writing the story too slow. "I should have finished 4 years ago". He also said that if HBO were true to his vision, there would be at least 5 seasons after 7 needed to conclude. So Martin is very disappointed with the show and might even regret having allowed them to make 3 spinoffs.
@@pridit5061 interviews.he actually says that he was too slow in writing. He procrastinated and wanted his story perfect so he would only write when he felt it was ready to be written. He has stated this in multiple interviews. It isnt hard to find them. They typically appeared around early 2019 or late 2018.ruclips.net/video/MwSRzPDr5cU/видео.html one such interview is this. You also shouldnt be using social media as a means of trying to learn the opinions of writers and actors. They cannot say what they think on social media. Interviews are better because it allows the writers, actors, directors, etc, to show sarcasm or give hints as to the state of their IP or work. Also I'm fairly certain George doesnt really pay much attention to social media and talking through it explicitly. He is 70 years old.
You take one statement “he blames himself for writing slow” and go on to put countless words in his mouth and make up opinions for the man. Im not saying he is thrilled about the show in reality but this is petty. We actually don’t know shit because he hasn’t said shit on if he likes how they are handling it or if he regrets the spin offs or not.
These books are very well written, But I get that they arnt for everyone. I personally love getting caught up in the small details of the world, characters and what they are wearing, the small histories of families and sigils. But some people dont worry about all that. This series could probably be a trilogy without all that.
I like how he says people just say they don't like his books and not that they offer criticism. D and D get both criticism and hate but they pass it all as hate and ignore it.
I ain’t much of a reader as I’m a slow reader and I may be talking out of thin air but I feel like no writer has ever created a world so complex and paid attention to every small detail as much as GRRM has
It's very easy to fall in love with Book1, after that the plot becomes way complicated and each character have not so easy background that requires explanation and digressing in some cases if it was connected to another character or a place where an incident took place. Still one of the most beautiful imaginative series of books you can read.
Not sure I'd want to hang around somebody who can't see the genius in GRRM's writing. It's more than a matter of taste, even if his genre isn't your thing, the brilliance is still there. I'd like to meet him just to thank him for sharing his gift with us all. The man works very hard to put forth what he does, and I'm glad it has paid off for him. Minds like his are rare, and it's been great to share a few spins around the sun with him.
Yeah ! I saw a lady youtuber talking trash about the first book that she didnt like the writing style and even said jon snow is annoying. They just have to admit its not their cup of tea but they dont because of their stubborness.
This is legitimate question do you have a parasocial relationship with the guy because uhh his writing is “genius” the guy is a great world builder but he has a bunch of unnecessary violence and rape in his books that don’t even occur in our reality. But he wants to go for realism. There are critiques of his books I have and there are many cases of bad writing. But that doesn’t make his work any less enjoyable my problem is with fans like you all who bend over backwards because you have a parasocial relationship with the author and his characters. Literature is subjective what you love isn’t what someone will love. Don’t be arrogant to think you can determine what’s seen as art for everyone
I think the Internet has empowered everyone to speak up. otherwise you wouldn't get the nice letters. but everything has a flip side so empowering everybody means also people you dislike or are nasty etc.
Lost Goth I think it’s mostly because of how easy it is to complain now. Since it’s just a few button presses away (like tweeting), rather than writing and posting a well-mannered, comprehensive letter to the author as other comments have mentioned.
"Sunset found her squatting in the grass, groaning. Every stool was looser than the one before, and smelled fouler. By the time the moon came up, she was shitting brown water. The more she drank the more she shat, but the more she shat, the thirstier she grew." Truly the Shakespeare of our time
I would have to like to hear his reasoning behind this. I'm sure he still appreciates critique, but maybe not from some random amateurs or rude people that don't provide anything but insults.
Its one thing to discuss it out in the forums but specifically writing to authors and telling them that they don't like their books? That's cheap and pathetic.
The internet is a public forum. Its not the same as getting letters at your door. You chose to participate, then you don't get to control how others participate. People will be assholes, just look away from the screen if it bothers you so much. Can't cut it, don't log on.
I can get wanting to voice your opinion, but why towards the author of the books? Isn't posting a comment somewhere on a thread enough? I also don't go towards people on the street telling them how ugly their shoes are. Why would I?
It's not a matter of loving or hating something, what doesn't seem to exist is reasoned discourse. It's a them versus us, he who shouts loudest logic. Debates are about point scoring, defending your position...Conceding a point is seen as weakness. People should read up on Dr Edward de Bono's lateral thinking logic (Specifically Six Hats) and apply that logic and structure to debates...both sides would be better off!!
I have watched the entire seasons of game of thrones and now i am curious to read the books i know the books would be more interesting than the series but i don't have enough money to buy the books

@monokhem hold on a second is this for real...I said I disagree because the books arent finished but each to their own ,then you tell me to work on my reading comprehension which there was really no need to say .you could have just agŕeed to disagree and everyone is happy but then you continue to insult me and the way I type things rite after I say no point hurling insults over a fucking book. So you are a smart arse who is on their period or something?
@monokhem telling me I need to work on my reading comprehension because we disagree about a book is pretty insulting and yes I added are you five to that because this is like an argument straight out of a primary one classroom infantile and pointless ....however it made me laugh and you seemed pretty angry to me .....grow up ya sack u don't like the books good for you now fuck off 😂
It takes effort to write a letter, you're not gonna get anyone hating your books enough to write one. So before the internet you just got the really nice stuff from the people who cared enough to send letters. The internet makes it too easy to send a nasty message to someone for something they did that mildly bothered you.
I do see some point to complaints, as often they're made out of care and concern. You've done something that's perceived badly and people want to tell you exactly what so you can do better in the future. I think that for a lot of people it's difficult to separate personal belief from objective truth, to them their opinions and world views are crystal clear and undeniable, anyone who doesn't see things their way must be either misguided or a fool. By complaining they're teaching you right and wrong, their right and wrong, in an attempt to make you follow their ideals in the future. Taking their complaints to heart is good learning, even if it hurts and you know it won't change your mind. Particularly for a writer, since understanding haters lets you understand how to write such a character. That can often be difficult, capturing the personality of someone who thinks fundamentally different from the author in a realistic way, in a way that doesn't make the reader think they're reading about an irrational lunatic. I did that poorly in the last paragraph, I described a crazy person because I haven't truly grasped their point of view. This is why I love when I get to discuss with people of radically different opinions than my own, learning to sympathize and see a topic from more than one viewpoint. Embrace the hate and widen your horizons.
He's great. Yep, he is right about the internet, and all. People are just perplexing... As an author too I get the haters...and also those who love my work... 🙂
lee Roberts Doubt is an healthy tool but how can you be so sure? There are a shitload of people writting books, plays, poetry, fanfics, etc. If my 13 years old niece can get paid to write shitty fanfics (which makes her an author), the average Joe most definately can. Not to mention that the definition (Oxford) is incredibely vague. "A writer of a book, article, or document."
@Joe Lawson Sorry for answering so late. I typically write Fantasy and Horror, but I have now dipped my toe into Drama stories. I release my stories to College students and my neighbourhood and I made quite a lot of money, more than enough to pay for food, petrol and more.

Well, writing to him things like "you suck" is definitely pointless. It serves no purpose other than the hater thinks "I told him", despite it wasn't asked or helps.
There are many many times when criticism is welcome. Sending an email message to an author you don't like to express your criticism is stupid, and its a waste of both you and the author's time.
The handful of cents postage costs is, it seems, a mighty gate through which only those who have to decided to be a horrible prick have to at least pay and draft a letter.
His descriptions can get tedious at times, expecially for a fella with ADHD like me who wants to get to the bloody point of a scene. I dont care about the specific description of the food, or what every background character is drinking. Lol Thats really the only thing I have to complain on, and its such a minor complaint that probably only applies to an impatient soul like me. Lol
Francis Thompson I honestly love in-depth descriptions on that kind of stuff. I don't think it ever gets excessive with GOT, but I can see why other people may think that.
The internet is awesome but I just don't understand why someone would hate ASOIAF or GRRM for that matter. The series deconstructs so many tropes about medieval fantasy with such nuance that I can't take any story where kings and knights are idealised anymore.
You are right ! I saw a lady youtuber talking trash about the first book that she didnt like the writing style and even said jon snow is annoying. They just have to admit its not their cup of tea but they dont because of their stubborness.
Elio and Linda are his biggest fans. They just hate the show, for what they have done to his books. Most of the book fans hate the show, show took a nasty turn after they ran out of book material.
Man you gotta be real bored to send an email to someone saying you hate the piece of entertainment they made. Like, it's not crucial to life, it's entertainment. You can just avoid it
I literally just finished reading all books in the Ice and Fire series! Basically I'd consider the show and the books equally amazing! Well all except until they passed the books... The new seasons are just terrible...
Vortex Eleven No shit it's becoming mediocre now... kinda lost interest in the show so im still gonna wait for Winds of Winter... which is taking forever....
indeed it is sad. the directors wanted to move on and probably a lot of the cast too. it is kind of understandable after 10 years. but it really shows in the writting and ofc they can t reach the quality of the book. the acting still is really good for the most part.
I won't ever understand that. Was it a gruesome thing? Yes. It was brutal. But it's the kind of thing that should make you go "Damn what a great story, I have no idea who's going to die" over throwing a tamper tantrum.
Agree, I would never be mad about a story not going the way I want it to. That is after all the purpose of reading a story, that you can't influence it. A story that is just meek fan-service, ass-licking drivel isn't worth reading. When stuff doesn't go as I want them to in ASOIAF (like the hero kicking the villain's ass, as most hollywood blockbusters cash in on year after year) I just go, "man, this is one heck of a story".
Lol. I'm not there yet. Still in the middle of A Clash of Kings despite being and Game of Thrones fan for nearly 5 years and having read the first book about 5 years ago as well.
Sea Raider it made me angry at Walder Frey more than it devastated me, but I guess other people have directed that anger towards GRRM? I don’t get it either man, art’s supposed to make you feel something and the red wedding pushed the story forward.
Omg, I still remember how hard it hit me when I read that chapter. Great respect to GRRM. I hope he writes more stories. Tackles more genres. Loved all his other books.
I personally thought the four first books were the best ones and after that they started decreasing in quality after that and didn´t really go anywhere, but I would never say I hated them. I think his world building, realistic take on what a fantasy society would be like and how he deconstructs all the common tropes in the fantasy genre is fantastic, although after a while I became numb to all the atrocities depicted in his books that happen in every chapter. Sadly GOT nowadays is a shadow of its former self in terms of writing and quality, but oh well.
I was conned like everyone else, I bought and read his books. They are Pulp Fiction, they are not worth a second read. I won’t be buying those last books now. After the last season debacle, what’s the point?
Every time a character eats, he describes their meal in exhaustive detail. I get the man is fat and likes his food, but, get on with the story here buddy.
@@MrPound08 the biggest problem with these books was the pacing, after "A Storm of Swords" the pacing slows down immensely. There are a lot of instances where characters just travel from one point to another with nothing important happening. During these instances, these books become extremely boring. These books are way too long and have too much filler, they didn't need to be 1000 pages each. And since they were originally one book that was split into two, the established characters are divided between them. This means that you have to wait until "A Dance with Dragons" to find out what happens to Tyrion, Dany, and Jon.
I used to love Martin's books but book 4 ruined it for me. I eventually read book 5 and hated it even more. That special sauce that the first 3 books had was just missing. Now when I see a new book from Martin on store shelves, I avoid it like the plague. I've moved on. Fantasy has exploded in recent years with writers like Brandon Sanderson, Robin Hobb and Patrick Rothfuss making the latest ASoIaF books look like bad fan fiction. Sanderson in particular is pumping out the content like its going out of style. I've just got better books to read.
@@srt-fw8nh I'd highly suggest the Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson as well as Sanderson's Elantris and Warbreaker. Sanderson's Stormlight Archive is really popular too but its not complete yet. Other great unfinished works I would suggest are Patrick Rothfuss' Kingkiller Chronicle and Scott Lynch's The Gentlemen Bastard Sequence. But if you want another great complete series, go with Robin Hobb's Farseer Trilogy. honestly theres lots of other great writers out there too but these are the best ones I've read so far.
I am new to reading. Tried AGOT because of the show, loved it. Tried mistborn, was bored to death. I was at the part when kelsier takes the girl to a manson where she meets a new character with name like szed or something like that. When she 1st discovers a mistwraith or whatever that was.
yeah GRRM is a great writer and all but he's heralded as one of THE greats i'm sorry but Game of thrones/ASOIAF isn't as detailed and layered as alot of you guys think it is and GRRM himself has alot of plotholes and contradictions in his books in away the show mirriors his books but in Reverse.
Except the books are actually written well and aren't just a blatant cash grab. Season 8 is an insult to the author, the actors, the show crew, and television in general. I don't care if you personally enjoyed it, but don't you dare insult the series and yourself by actually believing that it's good.
if he would cut out 500 pages of useless material in each book, they would be a whole lot more palatable. he spends most of a chapter just describing what everyone is wearing to dinner or 2 chapters describing marching from point A to point B. way too much "filler" in his books. i read the 1st 2.5 books and then completely lost interest. and yes...ive read THOUSANDS of sci-fi/fantasy books. modesitt jr., jordan, goodkind, zelazny, watt-evans, dave duncan, donaldson, etc...
I tried reading his shitty gore porn. Read half of book 1, got bored out of my mind and went back to Wheel of Time and never looked back. Never watched the show.
I mean. Whether something is boring or not is more or less subjective. But to call it gore porn? Yes sex and gore are in it That doesn't therefore make it gore porn.
Seriously, whether you like or hate his writing, he is so irritating here. He knows full well why there are a number of people who don't like his books. The reason is obvious enough and doesn't need to be repeated. He knows the kind of books he writes, and he knows full well why a lot of people think they're full of sadism and cruelty. Get off the innocent act! He would have sounded more honest if he had said that if people don't like his writing, they don't have to read it. It's absolutely absurd to hear him talking about a dark side of the internet here. (The reason is obvious enough why this is so hypocritical.)
Hey, did you think everyone dislikes sadism? Seems like there are more people who like it than don't if that's the case. He's writing for the right audience the right way. Targeting your audience is not hypocrisy.
he's telling the truth though, the internet makes everybody speak their mind without any effort or repercussions... if you've spent 2 seconds on the internet you have definitely felt the "dark side" that the internet brings forth in people. you also clearly missed his entire point - yes, he does know full well that not everyone likes his books, but before the internet the people who didn't like his books didn't bother writing him letters. now, with the anonymity/easy access of the internet those people do.
@@ecMonify It's more the 'innocent act' he's putting on that's annoying.. You can't spread the sadism, and cruelty, he does without expecting some people to have something to say about it. Pardon the cliche: 'He can dish it out, but he can't take it.'

Oh George, if you only read the RUclips comments about this latest GOT season on tv....
He doesn't like the latest series either ha
He already knows. He is very upset about what HBO did with his IP but explicitly blames himself for writing the story too slow. "I should have finished 4 years ago". He also said that if HBO were true to his vision, there would be at least 5 seasons after 7 needed to conclude. So Martin is very disappointed with the show and might even regret having allowed them to make 3 spinoffs.
@@phugindomas What's your source on this? His blog & twitter has been radio silent and media keep drudging up old quotes depicting them as fresh.
@@pridit5061 interviews.he actually says that he was too slow in writing. He procrastinated and wanted his story perfect so he would only write when he felt it was ready to be written.

The problem is that some people have too much time for complaining about something that has zero effect on their lives.
Lost Goth I think it’s mostly because of how easy it is to complain now. Since it’s just a few button presses away (like tweeting), rather than writing and posting a well-mannered, comprehensive letter to the author as other comments have mentioned.

I’m sure GRRM can differentiate between constructive criticism and hate mail
It's not a matter of loving or hating something, what doesn't seem to exist is reasoned discourse. It's a them versus us, he who shouts loudest logic. Debates are about point scoring, defending your position...Conceding a point is seen as weakness. People should read up on Dr Edward de Bono's lateral thinking logic (Specifically Six Hats) and apply that logic and structure to debates...both sides would be better off!!

It takes effort to write a letter, you're not gonna get anyone hating your books enough to write one. So before the internet you just got the really nice stuff from the people who cared enough to send letters. The internet makes it too easy to send a nasty message to someone for something they did that mildly bothered you.
Both those people sitting next to him have written hateful comments online and you can tell

To be fair, if its a legit criticism because of some issue or inconsistency, I'd say it is okay to give voice to it.

There are many many times when criticism is welcome. Sending an email message to an author you don't like to express your criticism is stupid, and its a waste of both you and the author's time.

Why were the awful? I haven't read them but I thought they would have a good plot at least.
