McConnell and McCarthy and all the rest had the opportunity to turn away from Drumpf.
They failed.
Worse they both ran cover for him. They had a solved problem and worked to let him back in. I don't draw the line at trump. He's a symptom not the cancer itself. The Republican party hasn't had a full policy platform in decades. This is not over with his defeat. Sadly with so many being so drained now we won't see the end of this nightmare for a long while.
GOP is pretty much all in on party-over-country at this point. They barely even trying to hide it anymore.
because they still held onto that belief that Juror 10 was spouting in that play/movie. just like the cowards they are.
I started voting democrat when Obama ran! I wish I didn’t vote republican in the beginning, because they truly all only care about themselves! Terrible! Then they claim, we are the bad guys!!!
All of them are the exact opposite of the men who made JFK's "Profiles in Courage" They thought they could control Trump and MAGA to serve their
ends and advance their careers. But they learned that Trump only serves his own interests and could give a crap about conservatism or the future
of the GOP.
If/when he loses in 2 1/2 weeks,Trump is going to drag the GOP down into political hell with him like a drowning man grabbing the nearest swimmer.
It's not going to be pretty. And the GOP will have earned every bit of it.
Born in 1957..I will be voting on Monday, Democrat down the line.
did you know '57 was the peak year of the baby boom? same year i was born. we are peak BB.
I was born 1957 (good year for kids) I am voting for Kamala. Every Republican president since Reagan has offered the same thing which has been bankrupting the country both financially and morally. Once the GOP was seen as the more pragmatic and moral party, but lost that with the candidates they have chosen.

Voting is not only a right: it is also a RESPONSIBILITY of citizenship.
This. I really wish the US made voting mandatory, and gave everyone the day off. Nothing would change the political landscape of the country more.
@@epbrown01 Absolutely, but like in India, the world's largest democracy, there should also be an opt-out box on the ballot paper. in Scotland, the accompanying text would probably be "I don't agree with any of these bawbags"
Yup and it should be mandatory like getting a drivers licence before you operate a vehicle . Australia got it right
YES! It is our civic duty as U.S. citizens, I wish MORE of us would take that SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY and CIVIC DUTY TO OUR COUNTRY very seriously.

i am a 77 year old Englishman living in France and I am following this election. I'm very impressed with your analogy to 12 Angry Men which I watched years ago. You have 'Hit the Nail on the Head ' and I could not agree with you more. Trump is an awful human being and anyone who can't see that needs their head examined. Hurricane Helene has ruined many lives. That's nothing compared with what Trump will do ! Wise up you Americans
I keep telling myself we are witnessing bigotry's, racism's, and misogyny's last desperate gasps. That is the only way I can continue to get up each morning.
You might be right. Ive always believed that young people are far less bigoted and racist and I hope and pray they will drag us kicking and screaming into a new era where bigotry and racism is looked at as unacceptable stupidity or childish behavior.
I heard someone on the news some years ago saying that donalds fascist cult was a death rattle for bigotry and thats why people are eager to go so low.
What is certainly true is that movement conservatism feels that they are very close to being completely unable to win in the future. That's why they're pushing so hard to end democracy.
@amaris27 Me, too, but I'm alarmed at how many young people are falling into the trap. So many angry young men and young women falling for social media right Wing influencers pushing the trad wife and anti birth control nonsense.
same
That should be said to Trump every Day of his vile life.
" Sit Down" and don't open your mouth again!
Ever since Trump made his first speech in 2015, , I had his number. There was no more I needed to hear from him.
I've hated him since he sued Berke Breathed out of his "Bloom County" comic strip in the 80's.
Same here.
I knew who he was when he was selling his steaks.
Before i had even heard the man speak, i had heard he was an anti vaxxer who was so profoundly selfish and immoral, that during the splitting up of his father's estate, he had revoked the health insurance of his infant nephew with cerebral palsy in order to threaten the kids parents into not accepting their portion of the inheritance. And i knew, anyone who could listen to that and still vote for the man was a deeply bigoted person who would accept any excuse for their eugenics driven cruelty.
I wish it was that cut and dry for everybody. It sure would've saved me a helluva headache, as well as the people around me. It took so fucking long to take a look at myself and my views, as well as the direction the repubs have gone (publicly at least, I know I know, they've always actually been like this, it's just mask off now, you get what I'm talking about, fuck off.), and it's hard, man. It was hard to realize that while I didn't think explicitly that whites were better than blacks, I still held a lot of white nationalist views, specifically when it came to police, prison/crime/etc, and immigration. It's a hard thing to do to recognize that. Especially when you can just hide behind "I'm not racist, I don't think whites deserve the be treated better than blacks etc etc." Even just perpetuating conspiracy theories, as well as stupid shit like "black people are more violent than white people" because of a disparity in criminal convictions, it's still directly harming people. By doing that, you're a cog in the wheel. But it's not a matter of changing somebody's mind with evidence, studies, etc. You can't reason somebody out of a position that they didn't reason themselves into. Idk if I'm making a whole lotta sense, I hope I am, but I'm tuckered out rn after a long week, and I feel like somebody might get something at all from hearing my perspective.
"Against stupidity, the gods themselves contend in vain."
That film is 67 years old. It is a grossly underrated cinema masterpiece with a very clear intent and message.
It should be required viewing in every school in America, along with "1984" and "Fahrenheit 451".
But the cancer this country has is of course, far older than 67 years. It seems we, along with the rest of the world, need a few more
centuries of serious chemotherapy to overcome the grotesque stupidity of racism.
I was in this play as a High School Junior in 1977. It's depressing as hell to see my country INSULTED and DEGRADED by that
monstrous, orange piece of sh*t, and that the polls are anywhere near "close".
Thanks for pointing out this clip. I've been spreading it around myself for a few years now.
Rational adults all know what to do. Vote Blue and write your representatives when the screaming and whining starts about
"cheating" and "voter fraud" from the Republican weasels.
*(edited after seeing comments below) Yes, and please include "The Handmaid's Tale" along with "Inherit the Wind" to the list of required reading/viewing.
Thank you. You explained this perfectly
I had to read 1984, Fahrenheit 451, Animal Farm, all of the tales against authoritarianism. George Orwell is especially a phenomenal writer. He saw the writing on the wall with both the fascists and the authoritarian communists. He fought in Spain during the 1939 civil war for the (Anarchist) Catalonians. I also recommend "A Brave New World" by Alduous Huxley and also reading Ray Bradbury, Robert Heinlein.
Classic sci fi and dystopian fiction was aimed for young adult audiences and teaches them many different ideas of democracy, progressivism, and competing philosophies.
Reading Farenheit 451 as a kid made me a lifelong learner. I want to make sure when information is discovered, it's heard and preserved somewhere, even if it's just in my head and on my hard drive. And while I've never fully read 1984, I'm very aware of the concepts it provides, and find the seeds beginning to grow. The Two Minutes of Hate seems to me to be appearing in many places, in many forms, not to mention youtube and tiktok banning certain words, replacing them with "unalive" and "self unalive" like they wish to excise the very concepts from our society.
And The Handmaid's Tale!
@@bobthegamingtaco6073 Newspeak and doublethink are real concepts now, what a world!

I love the people who say Donald’s not racist. He says some of the most ignorant, ill-informed things I have ever heard a person say but he is always being defended by like-minded individuals. @@jennifer60515 they're the people who say "i'm not a racist, i just think those low-IQ people oughta keep to their own kind instead of bringing all their violent crime into nice american neighborhoods like mine!" they know they hold racist beliefs, but they also know the label "racist" is bad, so they reject the label while doubling down on their beliefs.

I remember seeing 12 Angry Men on TV as a child. I love that movie. For a movie that was shot in a single room, cast with a bunch of old dudes to hold the attention of a 9-year-old is a testament to the writing of the dialogue, and the acting. Fantastic movie.
Absolutely. This is one of the most exciting movies I've ever seen. And a living proof you don't need any action sequences or effects to create thrill. The tension is palpable, and all achieved through pure dialogue and great acting. Masterpiece.
Unless you count the bathroom scenes.
An amazing "all star cast" on the film.
This was required viewing in schools in the 60s as part of the Civics curriculum.
It's a good example of what was lost when our conservatives decided that Civics was unnecessary in our Education system.
Yes, the GOP has been dumbing down public education for Decades, because they know that an educated electorate will never vote for them.
Conservatives today would undoubtedly label this masterful tale of morality as being ”woke”, just like they label everything else they don't like.
That was done to make sure Republicans could con people into voting for them.
I first learned of this play was when I was in junior high. We had to review and study it in school.

Fun fact: that character never says a single word for the rest of the movie. When asked about his ruling, he just shakes his head without saying anything.
I'd like to answer the question (jeopardy music): who is juror number 10?
Being called out for his own bigotry forced his hand. Once it's made clear to him that he is not impartial, he has a reasonable doubt of the defendant's guilt. If he hasn't fallen to the point of, "No sense of decency," then he must now find him not guilty.
@@deannamarie8389 Ed Begley, often seen in old Westerns.
We read the play as a class in the 10th grade. It had the effect you describe on me for the rest of my life. It's one of the reasons the Right is so afraid of literacy.
I read it after seeing the movie. I was impressed with the power of the writer, any honest writer, to evoke conscience and to awaken truth.
I actually watched this movie for the first time last month: And let me tell you, the sight of the entire room just walking away in disgust from Juror No.10 as he rants about 'you know what They're like', leaving him alone in the middle of the room, faltering as he realizes he wasn't saying what everyone was thinking, was an incredibly cathartic experience. Just, the on-display proof that this is not some new, radical, half-baked idea, that people knew this kind of rhetoric was wrong generations ago, just like today. I also like that, while you can make inferences from context, the movie itself never specifies who 'they' are. Because it ultimately doesn't matter who they are - because there's always a they. In every time and every place, there's always 'those people' who 'don't value the things we value'. It's a role that must always be filled, and definitions will be stretched and astroturfed until someone can be put in that role.
we have a DVD copy of it in our private media library (i think we inherited from Dad when he passed in 2021), but i never had any interest in watching it (or anything Dad was totally obsessed with because rebellious teenage syndrome). now that Steve's talking about it, i can't help but want to watch it myself, though i don't think i wanna drag mom into watching it with me (she doesn't want to be reminded of him any more after the last few years of his life living with mom before they separated and he moved into an apartment a short drive away).
at least it would help me to understand his autistic tendencies i seem to be noticing in myself over the past few years after lockdown and sought out an ADHD screening in '21. he was not wrong in his hyper observation about how the US was slowly turning fascistic. i can see why he took on an extra life insurance policy along with the generous government-based pension/retirement (he worked for NOAA/NODC for nearly 30 years) that he later bequeathed to mom, me and Sis; he wanted us to survive the oncoming beat of history repeating itself, whatever that may be.
You wrote "it ultimately doesn't matter who they are". Which is an important insight and one of the reasons I stopped thinking being a member of a religious sect was a good idea long ago when I was in the 8th grade and learned about religions other than the one I was raised in. Because the core of every religion is the idea of an "in group" (members of your religion) and "out groups" (members of every other religion). Members of the out group (the nebulous "they") are always suspect and inferior to people who think in such terms.
I love the bemusement when he realizes that there are white men like him who don’t think like everyone in his local bar…this is the first indication to him that the world is shifting a little. It actually seems to scare him.

Voting this time is the equivalent of enacting the 25th amendment. Justice is coming.
I voted yesterday. I voted in the 2022 midterms. This is my First presidential election.
I just hope people remember to vote in 2026 (assuming we're not living in Trumplandia), as I've seen good progressive presidents (e.g. Obama) get enough of the Congress chipped away from them in the mid-terms -- typically from general low-voter turnout -- that they can't get anything passed, but still get blamed for it not passing. Cheers!
Obama was never a "good progressive president" except in his campaign rhetoric. If you looked at his actual proposed policies, including in his 2008 campaign, he was very much a neoliberal moderate who used aspirational progressive rhetoric about "hope and change" to SOUND LIKE a progressive. In fact, he ran to Hillary Clinton's RIGHT in the 2008 primary (and had a less liberal voting record in the Senate, too): for example unlike her, he declined to support an individual mandate to ensure universal health coverage, and wasn't as supportive of unions.
Congratulations and Thank You for stepping up!!!!👏👏👏

I concur. I first saw that by accident, on the morning movie of one of the three networks, when I stayed home from school sick one day. I was fascinated, and moved by the gradual awakening of truth by the persistent skepticism of one man's conscience, and then another and another. I was touched as each, in turn, brought something from personal experience and observation, to give all the opportunity to open their eyes. It was a microcosm of what the best of America is, in overcoming the worst of what it could let itself lapse into.
I have watched that movie each time it came on, with the same enthusiasm. I have it saved on the cable box. I never forgot the lesson it taught me, at 10 years of age.
I am glad it was used for this example.

Exactly right! This has been the weirdest part of the trump era. That he has drawn people TO him is not what America has always been. We used to be able to spot a huckster, bully, conman liar a mile away. Now many don’t want to see him for what he is, but choose conspiracies instead to avoid facing reality. His time is over, we must “turn the page.”
@SandraGoff-t9c
I agree that there was a time when many of us could spot a con-man, huckster, and serial liar a mile away. I credit my parents, most especially my mother, with having unprecedented skill in that regard. What I didn't learn by her verbal instruction was learned by direct observation of her actions and attitudes. Priceless!
I'm not sure how so many of us became so gullible. Part of it is that our system of education doesn't adequately teach critical thinking skills and civics.
@@markpickett3512Looking from outside the US it seems mystifying that a country so representative of freedom is embracing an authoritarian/fascist. But then I think of Germany and the rise of Hitler: a country steeped in Christian history & culture and humanism descended within a matter of a few years into profound cruelty and savagery, as if an entire people had become possessed.
Most Americans could spot a huckster but there have been waves and streams of craziness. There was the revival preaching craze back in the early 1800s that spawned oodles of huckster preachers and charlatans running seances. One of the cults, the Millerites, had a set date for the Second Coming, which they kept recalculating as each date passed. That group spawned the Shakers and Seventh Day Adventists (and some Adventists split off into Branch Davidians). Then there was the Satanic Panic that started in 1980 and ran into the 1990s and still has believers today. And it was all nonsense, the creation of a woman who was making up stories to get the attention of the psychiatrist she was in love with, while he was in love with being famous. Shady psychologists jumped on the bandwagon and a lot of people were falsely accused and punished.

Steve Shives is the hardest working man on RUclips. This movie has some outstanding speeches and performances. The more things change, the more they stay the same...Tragically.
That standing in silent protest is fantastic. Shunning the racist should be ingrained in us truly righteous folk that understand that our differences should be embraced not shamed.
YES!!
Im 51, I been telling Republicans 2 shut up since 1988. With there "stay the course" n "thousand points of light" n there "kinder gentler nation" BS. Everybody said I was rude. Now look where we R.
54 yr old. I still tell some of them to shut the ***k up. They get stunned. Lol
Good lord it must've been horrible to watch them degrade year after year.
@@SeanCrosser Sad for me to see too. And how bizarre is it that when they nominate the lowest lowlife, liar, fraud, criminal, adulterer, fascist wannabe that the GOP has a better chance to win?! Scary and infuriating. Better men like GWB, Dole, McCain, Romney could never win PA, MI, or WI, and now this guy has support from at least 50% of voters there. Not to mention that he has made inroads with Black and Latino voters despite his over racism, and running against a woman of color! Makes me wonder WTH has gone wrong in this country, and I truly fear for our future.... Sorry about the rant.
I'm 76 and I have watched the party go down hill from at least the mid 60's starting with Goldwater and George Wallace. And the horror just has been getting worse every year up to the present.
Reagan's unholy alliance with the christofascists showed me that the GOP was wrong for America, and it continues to become a worse wrong.
There is a reason, as a Caribbean-American, why this is my favorite movie of all time. This is why. Thank you for pointing out this parallel.
Yep. One of the best movies of all time, and it was all done in one room, with 12 guys sitting around a table. Shows what good actors are capable of. Spot on video!
I'd say the writing and the pacing have a lot to do with how good this piece is. With such a dialogue heavy script it is hard to keep the pacing going to keep your attention. Reginald Rose was a master at this.
To Kill a Mockingbird is another great movie as well.
I lived in NY for 20 years before moving to another state. In the ‘90s the news had him on papers and television very often and always with disgusting news. I can say I know him for 35 years and I was and still am disgusted by this individual. From not paying his workers to the way he treated his wives and everyone else, from his numerous bankruptcies, always taking advantage of anyone and anything, from his maniacal litigiousness, everything is telling me that he is a danger to society. Needless to say that he is not fit for the office.
This has been one of my favorite movies since I was in 7th grade. It's kinda hard to talk people I know into watching it because of its age, the way it's all filmed in one room, and the fact that it's very dialogue-heavy, but I recommend it every chance I get.
I watched it with my brother who is 10 younger than I am we both loved it. It’s such a gem
facts
Think I'll watch it tonight!!
@@fufrRs you totally should!!
Just like To Kill a Mockingbird!!!!! Another classic!!!! ❤❤
The Henry Fonda version of 12 Angry Men has long been a personal favorite: longer than I can remember! Your comparison is spot on. I am still boggled at the mere fact that Trump was ever elected as President. How can that possibly be so? Because there are too many angry people who have been denied their rightful places in this country, sometimes by their own actions but many times, not. They are not the "dregs of society". They are mostly hard working, honest people who have been gullible enough to be so very misled. I cannot recommend this video enough!
How can we get this out to a broad audience? I'm serious .this NEEDS watched. People need to see and hear. It won't change everyone certainly there has to be the more intelligent that should cringe with the realization that this is happening RIGHT NOW! 💙
I have to go back to re watch this movie. Hate and bigotry will always be with us but we can keep both caged and defanged if we have courage !
It was a great movie.I had to watch that movie in a ethics/philosophy class. It opened my eyes. I see the world so differently now. VOTE BLUE, VOTE HARRIS.
As FDR said “the only thing to fear is fear itself” and orange baby is great at stirring up fear. Without it, he would be no one.
Very well put together, thank you Steve. I would sincerely hope that people sit up, listen, and follow your advice.
Wow, what a powerful critique!!!! So beautifully stated!!!! 💙 💙 🌊 🌊
The year I was born - 1957!!!! This 67 years young will be voting 💙 🌊 the ENTIRE 2024 ticket!!!!
A most perspicacious juxtaposition. 💪💪
I’m always angry when people don’t vote…especially when they complain later about the president or congress person.
The “i don’t vote” people don’t think about local officials and issue either. It’s a shame.
Voting gives you the right to complain. If you agree to let others decide for you, you have no right to complain about the results.
@@stulexingtonthere is an exception to that: people not allowed to vote for some reason.
All my life when people would complain about government, I'd ask if they vote. If they didn't, I'd tell them you've given up your right to any opinion and inform them it was the end of the conversation. Every time.
@@mlpfanboy1701 Of course, and there is a difference between won't and can't.
we did! we voted in Georgia!! 3 votes cast for Kamala Harris and freedom!!!
Thank you! 💙💙💙🇺🇸💙💙💙🌎
I just received my ballot in the mail today and already have it filled out and ready to return to the county courthouse on Monday. Very satisfying to meticulously vote down-ballot this year, really hope we can unseat some of these bigoted representatives Iowa's become riddled with. Gotta live in hope that we can delouse this state again.
Superb analyses! Vote for true Justice and Freedom.
I watched this movie in social studies in middle school - I'll never forget it ❤️
Well done Sir!
Already voted. Now i'm volunteering to help other people vote by giving them rides to drop off their ballot, or watching their kids while they vote. On election day I'm going to volunteer to take people to the polls. I'm in CO so I'm in a safe blue state, but I'm also in the 3rd district and need that to be flipped to blue (Boebert's old district).
Oh, it would be glorious if a blue landslide flipped the house. And even just a couple of senate seats would make a difference.
Wow good for you! Thank You 💙🇺🇸💙
Thank you!💙💙💙🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I saw this movie several years ago. Anyone who’s ever going to be on a jury should be mandatory that they have to watch this video.
Remember if you don't vote you don't have a right to complain!!!!!!!
The problem is, we all will suffer if 45 wins. Vote 💙 straight down the ballot.
Yes! Trump is like juror #10. I'm glad someone pointed it out.
I voted by mail earlier today. Blue all the way down the ballot.
When we show up, we win.
I found your channel because of my love for ds9 but im now a huge fan of yours because of your political views and opinions... thank you.
I know! It's such an awesome film, whenever I watch it I always get surprised how much it's still applicable
Another thing I've always loved about the film is that it isn't our nominal hero who stands up first, but one of the other jurors, which I've always loved cause I feel it reinforces the message that all people can be the hero who steps up, not just the one righteous guy
There phrases in that movie that donald uses....like I guess some of them are good PEOPLE, these Peole are criminals, rapists , murders? These people are not like us? Voting will put GOP ..back.....down....
Wow!!!!
I sent this very clip to a few friends back when DT was first running, when he made the infamous statements about Mexicans. How appropriate that it can be shown nearly 10 years later. I also sent out clips from a hit ler documentary, where in one of the many clips he mentions that he "alone" can fix the problems.
History repeats itself... unless you do something about it.
SPOT FREAKING ON, Steve. Thanks for presenting it for us!
One of my favorite scenes was when the well-dressed Jack Klugman admits he was a slum kid and shows the proper way to hold a switchblade. When he pick up the knife he half-laughs “I hate these things”. So much is said and illustrated in these little moments.
It seems we play this dance every generation or so of fascism and hate. It seems our rough tough persona of facing hard truths is easily swayed to lazy lies and hatred for others.
It amazes me how many anti facism, anti hate themed stories were coming out of WW2 and yet we and some of our European counterparts run to this same dance when the going gets tough, when we know who the bad guys truly are and they're not the people on skid row, or packed some shack near the border, but on billionaire drive the people who craft the laws to their favor, and only toss us some meat and a few coins to keep the majority relatively happy.
This is precisely why i find trump so profoundly disappointing. Just as many were willing to start holding politicians accountable, instead they got suckered in by the misconception that trump not being a career politician was the same thing as being anti establishment. When no! He's not anti establishment, he's the opposite! He's part of the money in politics! He's one of the wealthy ghouls bribing politicians to go against the common good! Its like people saw a businessman bribing a mayor to let his factory poison the river and said "we need to put that charleton in the white house!"
Its really sad when you think about it we have all this history, movies, shows, books, music, games all this reference material and we still learn nothing I mean what does it take for us as a whole to pull our heads out of our asses if these maga people would open a book instead of burn it they could see that trump is basically word for word bar for bar repeating things evil men from history have said and they always ALWAYS fail in the end we need to as harris said turn the page and finally start making some real progress
That's because the autocrats, oligarchs, and aristocrats realized that the way to keep control over the people is to fool them, not physically conquer them, and that's done by taking away education, taking advantage of the distrust in government that they themselves caused or perpetuated by their own unethical acts, and spreading misinformation. It's too easy to stay at the top when you keep everyone else fighting each other.
Human nature isn't something that changes, we're still the same emotional, chaotic, and conflictingly intelligent primates we've always been and people of power know that and how to use it at others' expense to benefit themselves. And we continue this vicious cycle until either the end of our species or until we force ourselves to evolve to something that's more conducive to our collective survival and prosperity as a species.
Excellent video! Perfect analogy!
WE are the jury in this “trial”. I vote guilty.
One of my favorite movies of all time. Probably because it never stops being current.
I wonder when people will finally learn and grow, as a whole. This was a great way to show how these times are nothing new, and the lessons we've yet to learn have been there all along.
Thank you for posting this! I saw this film at my university film board and I had forgotten how hateful that language was even at that point! And now we're living it every day.
Absolutely one of the best presentations' I have seen in 9 years to vividly illustrate Trump and the MAGA movement. Fantastic brilliant analogy !
It's refreshing to hear someone who makes a point so pointedly. Love ya Steve, carry on with the good work
Thank you for another great video and example, Steve! 🙏
Received my ballot in the mail today and am filling it out at this moment...FOR Kamala Harris, Tim Walz and straight BLUE down the ballot!!
I will drive hand deliver it, personally, because I do not want to take the chance of it getting lost in the mail.
We need to do all we can to preserve the rights and freedoms of our citizens and those who are striving to become legal citizens!

It's chilly but Shives just sent chills down my spine. Master Effective Speaker.
Ignorance is the norm, a fate of the human condition we must always fight to overcome.
i voted early today! 💙 i put my ballot in the box myself, blue all the way down 😊 i love stories like ‘12 angry men’ that force you to stay in their world and live in the uncomfortable feelings. those discomforts help us grow as human beings and expand our sense of empathy
thank you , will watch the movie -I already voted for Madame President and blue down the ballot 💙💙
Voted today in NC!
There is a B&W short film that was making the rounds on social media awhile back. From the 50s, a rightwinger is speaking from a gazebo in the town square about rightwing stuff. A man near the back comments to the man next to him that the guy is making sense. The second man, in a clear Eastern European accent gives his analysis of the speech. Basically he says he’s heard it before from a short German guy with a little mustache. He breaks down what othering and fear mongering does to people and how it’s a tool for those seeking power.
I want to gnaw on the table each time I see it because there are too many people out there who wouldn’t be swayed by the message even if they saw it. They want to be in the crowd.
yes I know that film, it's an anti-nazi piece from the 40s. IIRC it's in the Prelinger Archives now hosted at internet archive ( currently down because of assholes)
This is an excellent historical allegory for today's desperate situation. In this case, the country is on trial.
I love Steve Shives! What a refreshing perspective.
This is the most important YT video in years. Powerful and the truth.
I am also a fan of 12 Angry Men, especially the 57 film.
I watched it again a few months ago, and, especially with this Ed Beagley Sr scene, was thinking about just how much this is still relevant.
I want a T-shirt that says "sit down, don't open your mouth again".
Many years ago I was dating a fellow who took me and my 10-year-old son and his 8-year-old daughter to see Forrest Gump.
After the movie, his daughter looked at us and said, "What was that movie about?"
"Life," I told her, " It's about life."
Then I question her father's choice of movies for his kids.
"Don't tell me all you feed them are those kiddie movies, and they've never seen any real movies? That's mental junk food."
I pointed out that my son had already seen 12 Angry Men and A Gentleman's Agreement--two must see movies.
Also:
I got the most beautiful email today from the Pennsylvania Department of State:
"Your ballot has been received."

YAY!! Just filled my ballot out and will hand deliver it on Monday, also. Cannot take the chance of it getting lost in the mail.
I voted in Georgia on Tuesday. Let's keep our fingers crossed that it's a blue day on November 5.💙🌊
Yes, I love A Gentlemen's Agreement. Especially the part where he explains to his fiancee why she is wrong to reassure his son by saying that the taunts don't matter because he is NOT a member of the targeted group.
BEAUTIFUL! Perfect clarity from a kindred spirit! Thank you!
"I have black friends" my favorite copout. I usually ask if they had been invited to somebody's Mexican child's birthday or an all-black cookout. ....crickets....
One of my favorites! I always assumed that the person they were trying to decide verdict on was black. Never thought about it being of another race.
Given the clear powerful appeal of us and them thinking and any number of other fallacies, I'm amazed democracy ever succeeds in anything, here's hoping for another victory.
