If you want a Bible in your classroom, send your kids to a religious school. It doesn't belong in a public school.

I spent most of my life in Catholic schools, including a Jesuit university. At my university, I attended an seminar on the utmost importance of the separation of church and state. It doesn't only protect people who are atheists, agnostics, and other people not affiliated with a religion, it is important to protect the freedom of religious people as well.
I'm really happy that so many people from so many walks of life are pushing back against this nonsense in Oklahoma. None of us are free if some of us are not free.

I went to a parochial school run by the church, and a high school run by Jesuits. One of the things that I remember from history was the Know Nothing Party an extremely virulent nationalistic group that was among other things:

They were also given to violence and rioting. We don't need them to come back.

Why do folks keep voting him into the position? Stuff like this is why it's so much more important under normal circumstances for people to vote at the local level. If folks voted against these wingnuts at the local level to begin with, they'd never reach the superintendent, mayor, governor, etc positions that open the doors for them to make it to the federal political positions in the first place.

Mother of Tulsa Public School teacher here. This is ridiculous! There are children in his 5th grade class that can barely read and spell, and now spend $3 millions dollars on bibles! There is only one Special Education teacher for the WHOLE SCHOOL! Spend the money WHERE IT IS NEEDED! In addition, give the teachers a needed PAY RAISE!

However, having taught on the ideological “front lines” in recent decades (Mississippi, Tennessee, and now, North Carolina), and as a college professor and researcher, I am fully aware of the myriad breaches in this elemental right granted us, as citizens.
Freedom of religion includes freedom FROM religion. And no “establishment” of any religion within our government. Period.

Lifelong Christian here and I'm 100% with Steve and Hemet. Religion and government should remain separate. The first amendment is the greatest idea the founders had (and one of the greatest ideas humans have ever had). I 100% support teaching the Constitution and Declaration of Independence in public schools since those are founding documents to the US but the Bible is taught in church not school.
Exactly, there's a day of the week reserved for teaching kids scripture if you think that's important. And it's name starts with an S.
But that is where they have failed to do so... Hence the "why" they wish to put that book into the public schools!
But on another note, there is no better book to create an Athiest than to have to read the bible! I read it once, and that is why I am an Athiest!

Oklahoma school system was allocated $250,000 in July of 2023 for school emergency inhalers. He has not yet begun to procure the needed inhalers.

This is a great story. Not only is it fantastic to find there is a legal action against this travesty, it also shows a varied group of concerned citizens worked together to bring it about. Your comments are also spot on.

As a scholar of Christianity and a comparative religious studies of 30 years, I've been trying to convince fellow believers that they don't want to mix their church with their government, it's such a bad idea it actually says so in the Bible, the very book they profess to believe. On top of that governments have to do things that you really don't want your church involved in the government becomes infinitely more complicated once you have a state religion. On top of the unbelievable harm that it causes to the teachings of Jesus this will cause people to reject Jesus and all Christian churches, in drastic increase in atheists as a result, you cannot force religion down someone's throat and have them take it seriously they will reject it every single time.

I definitely see the advantage of being offered the choice to study all religions in public school. The important parts being a choice, supporting many religious traditions, coming from a neutral point, and emphasizing the ways that people of different faiths or no faith can cooperate and understand each other better.
I don't think Walters would agree with this.
Case in point: The Inquisitions were a religious response to a political problem. Whether that being Spain concerned that Jews and Muslims would somehow help the Ottomans retake the Empire, or Portugal committing cultural genocide in Genoa. The idea was "if everyone believed the same thing, there would be less political strife."
Not USAian, I had religious studies in school. But like. It wasn't just Christianity, I got to learn about all the major religions in the world.
Funnily enough, many European countries that have do still have an official "state religion" tend to also have the largest number of non-believers.

What you have to remember is that the crowd that screams back the blue only likes it when it benefits them. They dont actually care about the constitution unless its benefitting their current beliefs. This is the divergence. Democrats always have the same stream of thought on the constitution. They understand times change, cultures change, and the needs of society evolve to match problems unforseen. Republicans are usery and unyeilding but call it "conservatism" to cling to outdated thinking and ideas. They dont want change. They want to keep things in a whiter defined society masked by religious values.
Now that the judicial system is owned more or less by the conservatives, AKA the republicans, who will enforce said clause?

I too am Atheist and hate when people try pushing their religion in others. The Separation of Church and State is the best law out there to stop this from happening.

The same guy would be totally against this if he was told he had to purchase an equal number of religious texts from every religion represented in the state. Additionally, the writings of agnostic and atheist experts should be included. They would be very upset if their kid discovered they liked a different religion or believed in the viewpoints of the atheists.
My online community actually floated the idea of putting together a bid for this that undercut the Trump bid and added a bunch of extra documents that were not requested. We've done production runs of books before and we had relationships with a printer who could have done this volume given about four months to do it.
We were trying to figure out what extra documents would piss Trump and the superintendent off the most while still meeting the expectations. We settled on the entirety of the Federalist Papers. Martin Luther's writings and a bunch of other like progressive thought leader writings to be included that were related to governance and theology.
We even had a bid proposal being written by one of our members who runs a law practice

Iowa is already giving hundreds of millions of dollars to private bible beater schools. This money was for public schools, but the governor Kim Reynolds said it had to go to private schools because she said so. We don't have to worry about legislation in Iowa now because she has total control of all branches of the government. All they do now is RULE they don't have to legislate.

Here's one more irony. That freedom of religion clause in the Constitution was a precept because a number of the original settlers who fled England did so because their religious beliefs were not tolerated in England at the time. So the forebears of Walters and the rest of those kooks were the reason that clause was included.

I don't understand isn't up to the parents. There are public schools and religious private schools. They have a choice. I went to Catholic School from first to eighth grade. Went to public High School from 9th to 12th grade. I am 68 years old and retired from an Auto & Home Insurance Co. after 22 years and also a son of a Korean War Veteran and a retired Income Tax Consultant. I was brought up mostly in a white neighborhood. I am third generation Mexican American, and never had problems with any of the kid's parents who I hung out with. Half of them went to Catholic School. My father did all the neighbors Taxes and we lived on a 2-mile-long street. The Veterans he would not charge and always replied Thank You for Your Service. Now he is 93 years old and told me yesterday he voted for Harris/Walz. Good Job!!

It's always been that way. They used to have a state representatives that made headlines after 9/11 for saying gay people are worse than terrorists. Oklahoma is probably the most Southern Baptist state in the country.
Oklahoma has been in a tough fight with Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana for a while now for those coveted bottom rankings in education, health care and quality of living.
We've been inundated with carpetbagging assholes bringing ideas and attitudes that don't reflect this state's history. This was the state that produced Will Rogers and Woody Guthrie. We survived the depression and the dustbowl by taking care of each other and sticking together. I don't recognize this place anymore.
