This is definitely one of the best, if not the best vdo I've seen regarding trans maintenance...especially vdo quality/angles...my input to anyone doing this for the first time is: 1)make sure the fill plug is loose before starting anything...vibration is your friend, so use the allen key he used, but use a rubber hammer to tap it loose(make sure the end in the plug is thoroughly inserted or you can strip it) 2)yes, remove the exhaust bracket...it will give your hand more agility to secure the mechunit power connector 3)do not use powertools, accidents can happen(cracking, snapping) 4)if you are doing the job alone(and using jack stands instead of lifts), use a jack w/a rubber pad to lower/raise valve body/mechunit(easier to remove/install bolts)...this also works when installing the pan, by holding the pan in place before fastener insertion(especially if you change to an aluminum pan for the ZF) 5)and lastly, when turning on the vehicle, shift through the gears(3sec intervals up&down)...by shifting/sucking the fluid throughout the trans/torque converter, you get a more accurate fill estimate...otherwise, you could experience rough shifting afterwards(even if a little low)...but I definitely appreciate, not only the time, but whoever helps w/the camera work...bcuz I know I don't have the patience.

Torque values are ; 8nm for valve body, 10nm for sump screws ( criss cross pattern ) , 8nm for sump drain plug, 35 nm for fill plug. first topping up after replacing sump, start engine before second topping up, after selecting each gear for five to ten seconds WHILE PARKING BRAKE ON, and while trans fluid between 35 to 40 degrees CELCIUS. regards ;)

Try to loosen the fill up bolt first , just to make sure it opens before draining all the oil . Second is to avoid breaking the bolts by using a ratchet to loosen the bolts then to use power tool to fully loosen , NOTE . when tighten with a high force the oil pan can bend & leak , use a torgue wrench to tighten with proper pressure , overall great job 👍

Been in the automotive business for 15+ years myself, great DIY but with a few advise. For a "BMW Certified" tech not to be using torque specs (or announcing them for your viewers)to tighten the Mechatronic is pretty unprofessional not matter how many service jobs your have done. Not using proper torque specs on critical parts of the drivetrain (especially the mechatronics) can cause catastrophic failure, as I am sure you know as a "professional".
Here are the Torque specs for those who care:
    10Nm for Oil Pan bolts
    8Nm for all Mechatronic bolts
    8Nm Oil pan drain plug
    35Nm Filler Bolt
    **
    DONOT USE ZF LifeguardFluid
can cause transmission slippage, harsh shifting, noise, lock-up
    clutch cycling
    Good Luck.

@@dsales2011 I redid the gasket only to have the oil drip still present. Further investigation revealed it was the rear main seal oozing down along the engine to the area where I saw the oil. The PCV valve failed and under boost pushed the rear main seal out of its grove. That job was a bit intimidating but I was able to pull the transmission and replace the seal and no more leak. I took my time and with all 4 corners up on jack stands and the engine supported I was able to get it repaired without a problem.

I can see how painful is to install that sleeve. I think I am going to mark the position of the old one, just draw a line cross the old sleeve, electronic connector and the housing before remove it. Then draw a line on the new one at the same position as the old one before put it on. This way, I can position the new one perfectly aligned with the connector and housing.

    • @Zeiten
      @Zeiten  2 года назад +2

You can try, still expect it to be no easy task, the difficulty is not with alignment actually you’ll find out pushing it all the way in is problematic so make sure you lube those o-rings😉

I just did this today. FYI for anyone with x-drive, the drain plug is hidden by the front drive shaft. I could not get to it, not sure how you would. I ended up disconnecting the driveshaft from the transfer case. Wasn't difficult, and allowed plenty of clearance, but you aren't supposed to reuse the bolts, so I will be getting some and torqueing to 20 NM + 45 degrees. Another thing, as referenced in the video, the drain plug is extremely tight. I ended up using my torque wrench, luckily didn't break it. I also ended up breaking the head off of one of the transmission pan screws, so be very careful when you are installing them.

Hi Joe, I have the same problem on a 2012. There is another plug on opposite side at the back, but it is really hard to get at, almost impossible to see and runs close to the exhaust pipes. I will try to fill there, but filling and securing the plug with the car running might not be possible and I will end up taking the front driveshaft off. Joe, did you tempoarily reuse your bolts? Where did you get replacements. Are the bolts in shear or is there some engagement to the drive shaft? Just curious.

4f8d code (ratio monitoring gearshift 5-4) - rarely happens, only under oper. temp. (happened 5 times in a year). Sometimes it jerks when coming to a stop, or when changing P to D to R etc. Clutch pressure below from -20 to 70 mbar except Clutch E at 260 Mbar and slowly climbing.
Fluid and pan has been changed last 5k miles but it didn't help much.
Any suggestions for next step? Does this sound like a seal issue, solenoids or something major requiring complete overhaul?
    Thanks!

As a DIYer considering this job on my 2008 E90 auto, I appreciate the camera positions, commentary and patience along the way - invaluable to understand the process and likely difficulties beforehand.
I'd probably use a torque wrench for reassembly, but have seen various settings for this from 5Nm, 8Nm to 10Nm for the pan bolts - which one is it!? Also, are there torque specs for the valve body bolts? Thank you.

I wonder if I should buy another liter of transmission oil to fill it up? One thing to note is that I left the machtronic off for 2 days because I noticed that I was missing one of the replacement machtronic sleeve, so I had to get rush shipment for a new one before reinstalling everything, so not sure if thats the reason why it needs more than 7 liters of oil? I don’t see any reason to replace whole valve body since it’s just a mechanical unit (a web of labyrinths where solenoids push fluid), 95% of problems are solved by replacing mechatronic seal, mechatronic sleeve doesn’t cause any issues usually unless it’s leaking transmission fluid, and if there is a code for solenoids only then they will have to be replaced which is quite rare
