"Shadowplay" was one of the first songs I taught myself, being able to play it from start to finish. It took a lot of pausing and rewinding on the tape deck to get, but I did and it was so worth the effort. You can never replace that feeling when you first do that, teaching yourself to play a song - it does absolute wonders for your self-confidence. I even managed to get that little pinch harmonic during that first lead break and I thought I was just so cool. Ahhhhh, those were the days.
I just bought my first guitar and it's gonna be here in a few days and I'll do the same thing as you. I want this to be the first song I learn! Looking forward to it.
I've been playing bass for over 30 years, and Peter Hook was the reason I ever even picked one up in the first place. Shadowplay is one of my favorite songs of all time. I really love what The Killers did with it, especially the bass run at the end. I never bothered to pick up a regular 6-string guitar before, so am now learning at 50. This is the first song I have ever played on 6-string, thanks to this lesson. It's much appreciated. What a fun song to play - I guess all 4 members of Joy Division got it right on this one - Bernhard's guitar is so simple yet so brilliant. Thanks again!
Another great Joy Division song. Some Buzzcocks would be great Adrian. My two favourite bands late seventies/early eighties. Or 'Another Girl Another Planet' Only Ones. Amazing intro solo
I’m addicted to your channel now Adrian. Not sure where else I can learn country licks one week and Joy Division the next. Combining them has been a challenge though🤔 Great stuff keep it coming.
Adrian, you are talented. The cleanliness, the preciseness, the accuracy levels you have while playing is simply successful. And I don't think there is someone going to show up in RUclips and share both Blues licks and Post-punk songs at the same time at his channel. :) You're unique as well. Thank you for teaching me so many nice guitar stuff by sharing your videos. Pray for me man, i've always been the lazy guitarist, got discouraged after every hard goal failure on guitar. Cheers.
MrYarabandi This is some beginner stuff man. Even Bernard said it himself, that they couldn’t play really well so they decided to be moody more than complex.
I absolutely love that you did this lesson. An unbelievebly cool, but approachable song. That said, a great player, like you, can make it really it soar. Thank you Adrian!
Thank you for this. Shadowplay is one of my favorite songs. I just checked out your website and I love how organized it is. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.
Thanks for the detailed tutorial. While it's fairly easy to play, I've always missed the subtle nuances whenever I play it live. Kudos for the well-structured lesson. Automatic subscribe! :)
Whoa . . . Nailed it Spot On and your Sound via SC (got one of my own and also mic it) ; speechless. Tomorrow, I hit the attic to get this one down. Hats Off to you Sir and Thank You for the Motivation! 64 - 65 years now. Still Rockin'.
Adrian, thank you so much for the content you create. I watch all your videos and have both learned a lot about guitar and found new music to enjoy. - Alex from Tacoma, WA USA
Beautiful breakdown of one of my favorite JD songs! Can't wait to learn this one ... Got lots of bends which I haven't mastered yet, but you've inspired me to get there. Many thanks, mate!!
Thanks so much for this, it’s a great song to learn for someone like me trying to move beyond the beginners lessons and onto a proper song that’s not just a load of boring open chords.
Great job on one of my favorite JD songs! I have a request if you'd be interested. I've looked all over online and haven't found a really good lesson on "Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others." Knowing you're a Smiths fan and judging by how awesome your Charming Man lesson was, I thought I'd ask to see if you're willing to tackle that one. It's tricky!
Hi Adrian 👋 that Jazzmaster looks so cool. I’ve got one in Ocean Turquoise but I wanna one in sunburst too. Your guitar tutorial is very useful, slow and understandable. Thank you!
thanks adrian i have only been aware of your site for about two weeks and i love your teaching method. I was able to learn both lessons on how to mix rhythm and lead in a 12 bar blues. im so proud. keep up the good work. Bernie.
Brilliant lesson and superb choice. As far as I'm concerned you can do as many JD songs as you like - I adore them. New Dawn Fades? I'd love a word about the guitar tone. Are those soap bar pickups PAFs? Maybe I'd be better off with the Epi Casino rather than the LP or the Strat as it also has PAFs. The Sumner guitar tone is extremely distinctive. You've found a really good approximation. Pedal? Or just amp distortion?
Keep up the great work !! Love the tone you are putting out there, what year is that Jazzmaster and what Fender practice amp are you running it through ? Cheers !
always wondered how this post punk 16th notes really work! Thank you a lot. Thurston Moore does similar things, though I I heard it first time Bernard Sumner playing it, and it always have been kind of a mistery for me, till now :D
How to get such a soun quality on the record? Sir Adrian, please become my Prometheus and share rhe sacret light of qisdom of yours in order for us Joy Division and music over all worshippers to grasp it and spread it into the light, people deserve to hear more of this blessing from each ane every one's guitar!🤩
In 1966. I bought a used jazz master, 1959 in a pawnshop for $175. That was my favorite guitar when I was 16 years old, until I tried a Gibson 330 TDC, which I paid $50 for in 1968, and I still have it here in 2021. I put the jazz master, on eBay. I disclosed that I spray painted the body white in 1969, because in 69, patina like Stevie Ray Vaughan‘s guitar was not acceptable. It’s sold in less than two hours in 2017 on eBay. I am in the USA, some guy in Russia, that said he was in a surf band, made me an offer I still am stunned that he paid that much for that guitar. my first 10 cars cost less combined.. The guy said he just had to have the original 59 jazz master sound that the Venture’s have on all their records. They did all their recording with Jazzmasters, but they appeared on stage with mosrites.. I had that jazz master set up three different times. I tried different strings, nothing improved it. I described the neck action as a baseball bat split in half with frets on it.. whoever owned my jazz master before it got pawned must’ve been a pro. All the finish on the back of the neck was worn off, there were cigarette burns on the headstock, the guitar case smelled like an ashtray, and the body was about 20% as bad as Stevie Ray Vaughan‘s, that must’ve been some pretty brittle paint they put on those guitars in the 50s, but other than that, it was all there and not damaged.. October 2020. A Squier vintage modified jazz master came up on craigslist used. Just for old time sake so I bought it. This new to me jazz master is so much better playing and even sounding than my 1959 jazz master. The neck is so much better, it even sounds better... so don’t waste after one of those old relics. They’re not better, they’re just older..
Hi there... Great sound! Remarkable. Could you PLEASE tell us how you got this great Joy Division sound out of your Fender Super Champ (1983) and Jazzmaster guitar. What were your settings on the amplifier and guitar please? (any pedals used as well). Thanks in advance.
Your sound is really, really close to JD. Could you share your amp settings/gear anything. My Line 6 amp seems impossible to get a good post punk sound out of. Great tutorial by the way.

The Jazzmaster just fits you brother. Fuckin killed it
Doch, or nope, he didn't kill it. He made it alive and vivid again which is much more of an accomplishmen of his.a
Great lesson! Might I also suggest that "Another Girl Another Planet" by The Only Ones would be a great song for a lesson :)

Great pick Adrian and a good lesson. Thanks.
I can't play squat, but you rocked this. I have the original on vinyl, giving my age away! Still a Hookie fan though on bass.

Hi Steve, it's a new-ish Jazzmaster , about 4 years old. Amp is an 80s all valve Fender Super Champ.

What effects pedsls are you using on this?
probably a bit of reverb and flanger plus a distortion
