This may be off-topic but I just want to say (since we’re talking about favorite books), I’m 14 and gay, and I just finished reading the Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo last night. I literally cried so much😭 It is by far the best book I’ve ever read, and I didn’t expect lgbtq+ to be such a huge topic in it. I was taken aback. I think it will probably stick with me for a while, I’ve honestly never felt so connected to a book before.
Juliet Marillier is such an amazing writer!!! I've read so many of her books and had the absolute joy of being on a panel with her a few years back. She's a stellar human.
I'm so glad you made the connection of Marillier to Hobb. You're right--it's not overt. It's not at all as though they sound alike. It's the depth of characterization and the EMOTIONAL CONNECTION. I was a hot mess when I finished DOTF... In such a good way. I'm so glad you've started your Sevenwaters journey, but I'll tell you that I just finished Juliet's latest trilogy, the Warrior Bards, and it's so good. It's not Sevenwaters related, but definitely has that Irish lore feel. Enjoy!
I really enjoyed this vlog because you articulated exactly how I feel about Daughter of the Forest! Enchanting, heartbreaking, harrowing, hopeful, inspiring, lyrical and raw. Everything I needed to reignite my love for reading. It is written so beautifully in a way that had my heart and I was fully immersed in Sorcha’s captivating world. I felt so strongly for all of the characters and their love for one another was so palpable and profound. I simply fell in love with everything about this book!
Seeing you enjoy Daughter of the Forest is throwing me like 12 years or so back because I was obsessed with Juliet Marillier's books in high school! I think the second book, Son of the Shadows, was my favorite one as a teenager. I re-read it constantly!
I just finished reading Daughter of the Forest for the third time. I read it in my teens, my 20s and now in my 30s. I love it. It still gives me all the feels. It is a story I will continue to come back to.
Hearts blood, a Beauty and the beast retelling, is literally one of my favourite Juliet Marillier books and books of all time. The whole Sevenwaters series is beautiful I am an Australian and her books are popular here. I cannot recommend them more and the blackthorn and grim series is fantastic too. She writes true folk fairytales.
Daughter of the Forest is one of my all time favourite books. The writing style was so beautiful and I find I judge other folklore/fairytale inspired books off DOTF.
So happy you thoroughly enjoyed Daughter of the Forest! I wish I recommended the book to more people because it truly is a fantastic fantasy book and series.
My heart is literally so happy that you loved daughter of the forest 💕 I first read that book when I was about 14/15 and though I can recognize its not perfect I still love it so much, and I had a feeling you would love it too! Everytime you've mentioned In the past wanting to read a classic sweeping fantasy tale, that takes you on a emotional and physical journey along with the characters I knew daughter of the forest was perfect! I'm so emotionally attached to Sorcha's journey and I can't wait to see what you think of the rest of the sevenwaters series (btw each book follow different characters in the sevenwaters line but I think you'll still love them!!)
I got BUTTERFLIES clicking this video lol I've been waiting for you to read my all time most favorite "turned me into a reader" book AND NOW YOU HAVE!!!! Daughter of the Forest probably kept me alive at a few points. It's so special and I'm just thrilled that you've experienced it too.
i'm so glad you loved daughter of the forest! it is one of my all time favorites! after my spleenectomy, i re-read it and it made my day better. (when red tells her a story about the mermaid, i cried!)
Oh I used to LOVE Daughter of the Forest! It was my favourite book for years. It's been a while since I've read it, perhaps I shall reread! If you are still looking for a good fantasy romance - I ADORE T. Kingfisher. Specifically Swordheart and Paladin's Grace. They are just delights~
I read Daughter of the Forest right at the beginning of the pandemic. It helped me escape reality for a bit, so I’m really grateful for that book on a whole other level ☺️✨
I read Daughter of the Forest in 2013 and it became a favourite including the rest of the series. I just remember being invested in the characters and feeling emotional about their endings. I couldn't read other books for almost a month. Wheel of Time series I began on January and now I'm also on Book 4. I switch between audio and ebook and up to chapter 9 now. Phew..exhausting
I'm so glad you loved Daughter of the Forest. Marillier is one of my favorite authors and I've read everything of hers that is available in the U.S. Most of her books have a romantic sub-plot and they fit your description of what you are looking for perfectly. I hope you like Son of the Shadows.
I read "Wildwood Dancing" by this author a few years ago and LOVED it. Been meaning to re-read it and now I definitely want to add this one to my tbr as well!
Juliet Marillier is my absolute favorite fantasy author, so glad you've found her too! My favorite is Heart's Blood, so if you're looking for a romance focused standalone fantasy, I definitely recommend it! (:
finally, welcome to the extraordinary world of Juliet Marilliers books!! i personally love the original sevenwaters trilogy , and her newer book trilogy Blackthorn and grim !!! just wow...
The sheer terror of watching you read one of my all-time favourite books. Phew! We can still be friends 😂 I’m so glad you’ve joined the ranks of the Juliet Marillier Stans, she’s an absolute artist and now all I want to do is go and reread Daughter of the Forest again.
Can't believe you read one of my all-time favourites😭Everything you said about it resonated with me. Haven't been able to pick up book 2 even thought it's been seven years since I read DotF. Is it just me or am I the only one who couldn't bear to read the second book after reading the first few chapters? Too much heartache💔
If you’re interested in YA contemporary fantasy, Legendborn by Tracy Deonn is such a fantastic book. It features a strong, Black female lead, magical battles, and lots of swoon-worthy romantic moments. One of my favorites of all time!
My top recommendation on Wondery is the podcast "This Is Actually Happening". Each episode features someone sharing the story of a trauma in their life and explaining how it has affected them. There are fascinating guests, from people who survived plane crashes to first responders from natural disasters to abuse survivors.
Your description of DotF kinda reminds me of Six Crimson Cranes. Wheel of Time is worth reading through, but some of the books are better than others. Worth having under your belt though! And I also like fantasy that has it all!
My boyfriend met Robert Jordan in the 90’s when he used to work at a Fantasy Bookshop. He remembers him saying that the wheel of time was only meant to be a trilogy but his publishers kept throwing money at him to write more so he did. He only ever really liked the first 3 books he wrote. I’m hearing this 3rd hand after 25+ years but might be worth nothing.
@@JustAFrame I’ve spoke to other people who worked there at the time and they all said he told them outright he wrote them for cash so I don’t know maybe he did expand the trilogy because she was paid a lot of money to do so maybe he had an idea to expand it and they paid him loads of money to write it. At least 4 people have said he told them he wrote them for cash.
DoF is one of my all time favorites- be aware that book 2 is a completely different story and a different style. Sorcha is barely in the Son of Shadows. I haven’t liked any other Of JM’s books. 😒
I felt the same with Wolf and the Woodsman concerning the trigger warnings. While the writing of that particular book was good, the things that needed the trigger warnings I don't feel were handled well.
Daughter of the forest is one of those life changing books for me. Idk how else to say it. If anyone has any Recs for anymore “cottagecore fantasy” I am all for it please.

by what you said about Daughter of the forest it sounds similar to Six Crimson Cranes, are they based on the same mythology?
I haven't read 6 Crimson Cranes but Daughter of the Forest is based on The Six Swans fairytale. Hmm, maybe they are based on the same fairytale
