    You know, I almost didn't watch today's video, but I'm glad I did. As a writer, I normally refrain from speaking up about books I don't like (there are plenty for which I have positive things to say). And I've noticed that you rarely speak out in a negative way, as well, and almost never rant or use negativity as clickbait. I appreciate that. But I also appreciate your measured critique here. It's useful information, as you insightfully articulate *why* it's not working for you (and you've steered me well clear of this series).
    Thanks for always being judicious about your use of negativity. You have power, gained through hard work to build a respected brand, and wield it in a thoughtful way. Cheers!

    THIS. Is exactly how I felt. Every step of the way. I wanted to like it, it had promise and then… it just never took off. I am bored by the romance. The group dynamic fell flat. The pacing was awful - nothing truly plot progressive happened for 95% of the book. At one point one big reveal was a character straight telling you after you got the initial clue a ways back, but nothing else led into that reveal. What editor let this book go through as is? Was SJM just phoning it in? Does no one bother to say no to her because they know her books will sell? I’m so confused

    SJM is usually the author I reread to get out of reading slumps, but I’m honestly struggling to get through this one.. I don’t really care much for the characters, and I sort of feel like she’s just tried to recreate characteristics people like from her other books, but like without giving them any other personality. Loved the vlog tho!❤️

  • @miarose1117
    @miarose1117 2 года назад +75

    Don't be scared. SJM has her detractors for a reason. And some creators even grew a lot after admitting to it and owning it. I personally trust reviewers much more if there is the occasional 1, 2, 3 star rating. (I just accidentally publicly hated on Iron Widow on another platform, maybe this is just me hyping myself up)

    • @mintleafbluesey
      @mintleafbluesey 2 года назад +5

    • @txdave
      @txdave 2 года назад +8

      I trust people less when they hate a lot of things they read, it gives me the vibe that they are reading things to be controversial. To me it was less owning it, publicly hating on SJM books quite literally gets people views! Lots of people love her books but lots of people “hate read” them as well. I personally dislike her ACOTAR series but have been surprisingly enjoying the Throne of Glass series after seeing how much hate they get (at least on booktube which I mostly watch, not generally). I haven’t read her other books!
      I love regans videos because she obviously curates her book selection to hopefully love everything she reads and genuinely hopes she will. So her not liking a book I very much trust! Though reading is subjective and I’ve seen many people like this book as well :)
      All this to say, I think there is a balance of praise and criticism for SJM that I think makes sense! It’s a lot more controversial to me to dislike a book or series that is universally loved - I hated the poppy war and every single person I watch loves it! :) it’s an interesting discussion to have!

    Oh girl I totally feel this. I actually decided I was done with this series after the first novel. It just kind of feels like I’m reading about the same characters in ACOTAR. But the writing almost made it seem like the expectation in book 1 was that I already had the nostalgia and love for the characters as if I’d met them and had their backstories (Cuz that’s honestly the only reason I still read the new ACOTAR stuff). It just didn’t land for me, it feels like her ‘adult’ novels are still very new adult, there’s just a lot more F bombs, a lot less character development and plot cohesiveness so I’m gonna have to exit stage left here.
    Caveat, I don’t think this series not working for me makes SJM a terrible author or other readers terrible for enjoying it. It didn’t work for me, if it works for you that’s great! Great Video!

    I love this because you're always so positive when it comes to books and for the first time you were like this book sucks, sorry y'all and that's great! It's nice to see this side of you every now and then when you can just be open and honest.

    Personally, I have no interest in reading these books but I was interested to hear your opinion since I know you liked the first one. I really appreciated your honest thoughts and hope your comments section doesn't become too toxic because of it. Also this is a year in the future but don't push yourself to read the third one for one plot thing, it's not worth the boredom and anger (this is probably sacrilege but can just read plot breakdown or have someone tell you, I've for sure done this before).
    Also, as always, your outfits are AMAZING and Millie is just So Cute.

    I'm so glad that SOMEONE feels the same way about this book as I did. I just couldn't gel with it and I really thought there was too much male perspective (caused me to DNF). I'm pretty disappointed because book one was so much better on the romantic plotline and the storytelling.

    I haven’t even read the book yet, but as I usually do, I read the last page before starting and I saw “Rhysand” -.- she NEEDS to let him go ffs it put me off of starting the book lol idk if I’ll read it anytime soon- I think I’m over my SJM phase which is sad bc I loved that trash :(

    You are so great with no spoilers! I don't know how you do it. I usually don't watch your vlogs until AFTER I have read the book but this one I had to watch first! I read CC1 last month and so many points you made I felt were there in the first one too especially underdeveloped characters and plot. I struggled through it, only finished because I had read so many pages at the point I wanted to DNF and then debated on whether to read CC2. There was so much hype too and I really thought I would go crazy for it like everyone else :( If you are going to write for 700+ pages then you need to make it worth it. It looks like I will struggle through this one too (not anytime soon though, ha!) as I do want to know what happens to Ruhn.
    CC1 left such a bad taste in my mouth I needed to follow it up with something good. I picked up the Infernal Devices series and just finished Clockwork Princess last night...still sobbing. It was everything!

    I just wanted to chime in to say how much I appreciate this vlog, and how it reinforced my own opinions where this series is concerned. Hearing your well-rounded criticism of the male dominant perspectives and the lack of intrigue between Bryce and Hunt in this second instalment has reinforced what I’ve thought since I read the synopsis - this book isn’t for me. I may read it eventually, especially considering the end reveal(s), but I’m not going to expect a five star read. In all, you gave a genuine and nuanced perspective as to what you felt throughout reading this book and never once were negative for the sake of being negative - all of your concerns were perfectly founded, and you reiterated many times that not only do you welcome different opinions, but you wish you were that part of the audience instead. Anyway, TL;DR - thank you for this vlog, it was so helpful.

    I read a lot of gay romances, so I don't mind male characters dominating the narrative most of the time, but if you're gonna have a multi-POV narrative, and have female characters, then yeah, you should have female POVs. I agree about the romance: show me the romantic part, not just the steam!
    I enjoy the will-they-won't-they, but I also like to see couples working together through the narrative, but Sarah J Maas just doesn't sound like the author for me lol. I have heard things about ACOTAR, and it just doesn't sound like it would be up my alley.
    I appreciate your honesty!

    This was super entertaining and I liked that you were honest because you weren’t mean or unfair and you backed up your criticism while also stating there’s nothing wrong with others enjoying it but it didn’t personally work for you. I don’t have any interest in this book but I love your vlogs and this one was highly entertaining and I’m sure you’re not alone in these frustrations because the issues you had were things that would bother me too. Anyway hope you next book is a better reading experience!

    I loved the first book because the emotions were so well-developed. It felt like it centered on friendship and grief and moving on through friendship, which I loved. This book felt more like books 2-6 (LOL) of TOG where it’s like okay, we’ve created this world and attached you to the characters. Now there’s all this world building to do that didn’t happen in the last book because we were actually developing characters… but my question is can’t we have world building and character development at the same time?

    As someone that has only read A Court of Thorns and Roses and actually liked it but ended up never picking up any other SJM book yet, over the years I've been hearing all sorts of opinions from people that love her books to people that hate them for various reasons. That makes me curious and I intend to, at some point, read more of her books just to see what I personally think. I gave ACOTAR 4 stars at the time (2017) but I don't remember much of it besides specific scenes so I might also re-read it if I have the patience.
    Also, I always find it funny when people talk about the "mate" thing because as someone that reads a lot of Teen Wolf fanfic (mostly Sterek) that concept comes up a lot and I actually like it. The word doesn't bother me at all but I think I do prefer it inside a werewolf concept I don't know lol
    We'll see what happens in the future.
