  • Replacing rear discs & pads on a mk8 ford transit, including how to set the wheel bearing preload.
    Yes I know now that I didn't need to remove the hub. probably easier to remove it though as the discs are always rusted solid to the hub.

    I had to do this job on our mark 8 5 years ago after the bolts sheared off on the hub that hold the hafshaft so the halfshaft walked out of the diff. No need to take the bearing apart. and yes the bolts are stretch bolts The correct torque is 68 NM then 90 degrees. They sheared off because someone in the past tightened them to the wrong torque. Have the do the same job soon after 40,000 miles.

    My friend to remove the brake disc you don’t have to take the nut off. Remove the bolts holding the disc and push the disc back and turn it in a way to slide through

      yeah lovely in theory until u try it and realise the bolts won't pass the abs teeth

      Correct. I just removed back plate and had plenty of room to rotate the disc.

    I work in a fleet repair shop, have about 60 of this type vans. I average about 3-4 rear brake jobs a week. Never removed a hub (check Ford manual) these vans will wear out rear pads about 30 k.
    When you pay nothing for info, that's about what you get.

    Also just a question but why take off the hub to change the disc, you can take the disc guard thing off and undo from the back can't you ?

    Do you not need to put that spacer back on that sat behind the inner bearing when you took hub off?

    I saw another video where they separated the rotor from the hub, while it was on the car still. Just hit the rotor on the front to free it, turn it until it matches the pattern in order to slip over the hub. No need to take the hub off unless seal is leaking. Looked very easy actually. I will try this job on mine this weekend and confirm.

      Thats actually the only reason for the weird inner pattern on the rotor. So you can turn it to match the hub and slip it over. Otherwise they would have just made it solid like a regular rotor.

    No need to remove the hub as said , other wise nice video to replace abs ring or bearing also a little heat removing the disc works if seized as well as for fitting the abs ring also so not to damage when using a soft hammer so not to bend or damage it

      Pain in the arse way of changing a disc. I did the fronts as well and my T50 snapped in the bolt that holds the hub on. Bloody nightmare trying to get the broken bit out so I could undo the bolt.

    do the bearings get repacked with grease or do they get their lubrication from the dif oil?

      If you can find some kind of a drift that will fit the seal then you could tap it in. It is a tight fit though and you'll risk damaging it.

      use a press. 100% very hard to knock in without damaging.

    I came here to find out the rear axle torque spec. And realized that a lot of people are adding a ton of work. Once the axle is removed, The rotor will slip out without having to remove the bearings...

      My eyes are shit and I didn't see that I had the screwdriver in the wrong place. Never mind, all sorted now.

    So, rear brake disc and pad replacement involves partial strip of the rear axle, half shaft and wheel bearings out, oil seal replacement and rebuild setting pre load on the bearings, etc. This is no longer a trivial brake job for the back street boys (not the band). ....

      It's the same as anything, if you know how to do it then you can do it whether it is on your driveway or at Fred in the sheds place. But yeah, a bit involved just for brake discs when every other manufacturer just slips the disc over the wheel studs.

      No. FWD is a 32mm nut, buzz it off and pull the hub off the stub axle.

    You only take the hub of if you need to change the wheel bearing

    On these you can leave the hub and wheel bearing on, and hit the hub round till you can get the disc off

      They modified the rear hub after 2016, before then you have to dismantle.

      Because at the time I didn't realise you could do it without taking the hub off. Every day is a learning day.

      Okay mate just at 4:10 in video when you take hub off there's a a spacer of some sort of washer on back of inner bearing. Or is that something that's part of seal and fell off with removal?

      Its part of the old seal. They always split when you pull the hub off.
