  • Welcome to Rancho Peligro, set half an hour inland from Casa de Campo in the Dominican Republic. During our stay we were kindly invited to hunt doves and then go on one of their driven pheasant shoots, it was an extremely memorable experience!

@@marklodge3628In all fairness, Mark, most of the U.S. and the rest of the world can't support a wild population of pheasant. Here in Pennsylvania, they don't survive the winters, so it is literally stock & hunt.
I don't know what to tell ya, that's all we can do.

I've said before, you 2 Gents are very lucky indeed. Great Narrative explaining what's happening and how you feel, Stunning camera work making what is a beautiful place look truly amazing. Also hats off to the owners, managers and all the staff of Casa de Campo, That truly looks like any shooters ideal place to spend a life time. If only....you never know one day my numbers might come in

Have you thought about going to America and doing it on some of the public land? Or maybe a private farm that caters to that stuff? Could probably be cheaper, especially if they mostly cater to the region. You understand not everyone hunting farm really advertises international level. They get more than enough business from the local big city 1-3 hours away. You can convince your wife to go on kind of a shopping trip. For that matter you could maybe pick out something near a national park or national forest. That's traditionally our big draw in America anyway for Europeans, and especially Asians, is the national lands. There's the big ones everybody knows about. But people don't really understand just how many national forests and national parks there are. Not to mention national recreation areas and stuff like that. So we could very easily become like a family thing, except you go hunting in one day.
My little state of Kentucky has a national park (Mammoth cave National Park), a national forest (Daniel Boone National Forest), two national recreation areas "blue heron" and "land between the lakes". Kentucky lake and lake Barkley are both significantly bigger, actually so is Green River lake and lake Cumberland, but significantly bigger than like Windermere. Cave run lake is smaller, but it's very picturesque as it's right on the forest. I'm assuming you're British because you said holiday, Go on holiday, and not vacation. I know what a British people are really into horses. So there is keeneland race track (the Mecca) , Churchill Downs race track (the most famous), and Ellis Park race track (the oldest); Plus there's also the Kentucky horse Park. They have the Kentucky 3-day event there every year. It used to be that Land Rover sponsored it, but everybody would show up to the tailgate with jeeps... So now Rolex does it... Hard to see what watch people are wearing on camera ha.

I just had my first day of driven pheasant in Lincolnshire a week or two ago. I’m definitely hooked, but that warm sunshine really looks inviting! It’s certainly a lot different from the way we do it in Midwestern America. 🍻

Are the pheasant actually driven, there didn’t look to be any cover, are they American style released out of boxes for each drive?

It’s a family tradition from before the drug war to go south to Mexico for dove hunting. Dad and Grandfather once shot-out new Winchester automatics in a few days with no game meat wasted by the locals. Local dove hunting is still probably the best amongst row crop farmers.

I just had a look, it would be about £4000 pp for 7 days for just a villa. Then it’s the standard £40 per pheasant, or about £400 for dove shooting

I have looked at booking for next year, there are some bargains on Air BnB to stay in and dove shooting is $500 a day. It’s not a cheap place to visit, but can be done slightly more effectively if needed

I'm consistently taken aback by the differences of shooting. I frequently see you take shots and make shots, and I know that there's no way in hell I would make them. And then I see you take shots that for me, they're easy shots, and then you miss. I mean outside of maybe the individual kind of thing I almost wonder if it's a environmental/upbringing /training thing? Thoughts anyone?

How those birds were coming over as a steady stream of singles, no flushes, etc, and very few of the cock pheasants had any tails, makes me think that they were being let out of cages or crates out of sight. I've been involved in shooting for over 55 years, and this gives me an awful feeling in my stomach, it will never ever match British-style driven shooting.

Nothing irritates me more then you turning on and off the safety before you fire, no need for it🤣 you only need to turn it off once not 7 times for one bird
