Ive played combat mission, graviteam, wargame, men of war, close combat, etc and yet Armored Brigade is the one I always come back to. I'm excited for the devs next project, I heard updates for the game turned into a full fledged sequal.

Rumor is that players are getting more control over air support. I think that is one of the things that holds AB back and one of the biggest player complaints.

I loved M1 Tank platoon back in the 1990's by microprose. My favorite part was the map tactical view rather than assuming control. THis is that game but updated. looks cool. Cant wait to play it this weekend.

My problem with the game is the terrible AI. The devs have decided to go with a scripted approach and canned scenarios with their next game as a result. You can do things like set up an ambush behind a building and the AI will relentlessly get its units killed one by one, never pausing to outflank or otherwise “learn” from the destruction of its units. The only tactical wargame with fairly good AI that I’ve played is the various Combat Missions (and they use basically scripted actions by the scenario designer to simulate true AI anyway). As someone who has been playing computer wargames since 1984, I can tell you that AI has barely improved in all that time. They’ve been at a dead end for a very long time and it seems unlikely to change.

I don't disagree with your statement at all but I also think designing an AI is going to be very challenging. Players do not value their units "lives." what I mean is that they will grind their units all the way into the ground for a victory.
I think AI can be improved but I am not sure how. Devs can combine scripts and AI but at the end of the day it will still be lacking, PVP is probably one of the best ways to go but then you have players who get to anxious to play it or they don't have the time.

The scale of battles is much bigger in this game than in Combat Mission, also I don´t see how the "AI" from that game is better. The main problem with AM is the infantry

    • @kondor99999
      @kondor99999 Год назад

@@markcorrigan3930 The TacAI (which controls individual unit actions) is eerily good but CM has no true AI for the larger formations. Instead it’s pretty much scripted, which tends to work well for the scale of the battles (ie a company commander would have limited scope to change the details of an attack order). Basically the best AI in wargames is…no AI at all. Instead, the scenario designer cleverly scripts nme actions to give the illusion of AI. A great example is Heroes of Stalingrad. That wargame was damn hard because it was carefully hand-scripted. OTOH, the much more recent LocknLoad games (using identical game mechanics) employ “true” open-ended AI. And it totally sucks. I mean, it’s ridiculously bad/stupid. I end up having to play both sides just to get a halfway decent experience.

@@markcorrigan3930 AB does have some enormous battles but I also feel like it lack a bit there too. I think order of battles and proper troop compositions would take AB to the next level.
The AI in almost all RTS/RTTs can be improved significantly. I didn't want to make a video comparing two franchises because it always leads to disagreements. The video I wanted to make what "What is Armored Brigade" and I wanted to highlight what was unique about it. This channel is meant to explain the details of a game and not so much surface level content.

It was set to private for some reason. I wan to to apologize for the titles. I recommend starting with the recon tutorial. Next please let me know if you don't understand anything in particular. I would like to make more videos but I am not sure what to cover.
The What is Armored Brigade goes in depth into movement commands. It is just cover random mechanics that I thought players would struggle with.

@@TacticsWithJoe Thanks for the video link.
I guess I’m trying to find a better way to enjoy the game, to have fun with it while also appreciating the detail and depth that people say it has.
Do most people play the game by setting up all the initial movements and then just let the game play out? Or do you think it’s best to try to micromanage everything like in an RTS game while the action is running? Should a player pause the game every time something is “discovered”? Or just let things happen as they would in real life?
I guess I struggle most with LOS. There is an old Matrix video on LOS, but it seems that the developers have changed LOS so that it’s a bunch of little dots on the map. I know in one of your videos you show how to make the map 3D from a distant viewpoint. But I wish there was a way to visualize LOS like you can in the Graviteam games and in Combat Mission, from the ground level perspective of the unit.
I’ve read the manual, but I wish it had a dedicated written tutorial or some kind of playthrough chapter.
Maybe if you could suggest a comprehensive order in which to watch the videos that you’ve done would help.
Your videos are really great-they are no-nonsense and clearly intended to help viewers learn the game and enjoy it. I wish there was some clear way to watch them all so that they would build on each other.

@@leftydad8 I think what your asking is difficulty to explain because what is enjoyable to me may not be to you but I will attempt to provide my perspective; however,
I don't want to overload you with information but I am going to anyway. (I tried to keep this brief but struggled. AB is an extremely fun game and you need to play it the way that is fun for you. Don't focus on winning or mastering the mechanics as that will lead to frustration. The game gives you a ton of tools and you can choose to use them. Play the game at your of pace and to your comfort level. The lethality in AB is very high and that means your units will get destroyed. When you launch a battle just plan a few moves and then hit play. Then adjust as necessary. )
Do most people play the game by setting up all the initial movements and then just let the game play out? Below is a clip of how I play the game.
      ruclips.net/video/ewejUnnHO_I/видео.html
No, you do not need to set up all of the movements as that would be counter-productive once combat has started. You can however, you can setup delayed movements but those work best when you have a fun battle plan that you want to execute. I generally only use them for videos but it is a tool that you can use.
      ruclips.net/video/2J8rQOykN9s/видео.html
Or do you think it’s best to try to micromanage everything like in an RTS game while the action is running?
You do not need to micro everything and you wouldn't really be able too. The game has a command delay and that delay is affected by 1 factor. Play the way that is fun for you. Map out some commands and approach an objective. Think about why you would assault that direction and what difficulties and limitations you will encounter.
Should a player pause the game every time something is “discovered”? Or just let things happen as they would in real life?
What would you like to do? There is no shame in pausing or slowing things down. Does it break your immersion or does it feel more tactical. Do you need time to solve a problem and route troops. CMs allows you to pause and so does GT. I pause the game when I get overwhelmed or when my plan begins to fall apart.
I guess I struggle most with LOS.
LOS isn't as complicated as you think it is and honestly I have no clue what the colored dots are. The video below is a good demonstration of LOS. LOS is click the button and click a location on the map. If you want to see what a unit can see. Los click on that units location. They can an see everything thing that the light touches. They can't see the black areas. Don't over thing it.

I’ve read the manual, but I wish it had a dedicated written tutorial or some kind of playthrough chapter.
yeah, the manual is a bit light on information and I will work on a playthrough. My videos mostly cover mechanics and how to apply them to the game. That is a failure on my part. Plus they all just around and have terrible titles.
I approach games differently though and it shows in my videos. They need to be more beginner focused but I also don't want to waste peoples time or insult their intelligence.
Maybe if you could suggest a comprehensive order in which to watch the videos that you’ve done would help.
I will start a new series.
Your videos are really great-they are no-nonsense and clearly intended to help viewers learn the game and enjoy it. I wish there was some clear way to watch them all so that they would build on each other.
This is a common complaint and I will work to improve it in the future. For me I just don't like creating 40-50 minute long videos but I may need to.
The playlist is not structured very well but below are a few videos you should watch.

@@TacticsWithJoe Thanks for your detailed reply!
I’m going to take your advice and chill out (and just be prepared to get destroyed several times!!!) But it does seem that fully mastering LOS is key to success.
I’ve seen many of your videos for various games, and they are all excellent. I’m going to watch all the Armored Brigade videos in the link you included, in order.
Also, sometime it might be great for you to make one long playthrough video of AB.
Once final question…do you think the Graviteam wargames are greatly more complicated than AB? One long video playthrough of that game would be great too!

The game goes on sale periodically and most games fail to drop in price or at least to a reasonable level.
