True. I taught my kids to keep in mind we’re always being marketed to. Not to make them paranoid, but to give them that awareness. There is always some amount of manipulation involved in marketing products to people. A satisfied, secure person just won’t feel as compelled to buy their products. So they try to sell a dream to us.

      @firstnamelastname6016 Год назад

@@brclove1it’s a very personal thing, but I’ll say that, unless you have a skin disorder or something really disruptive, always always start with a physical sunscreen.
You’ll probably want a simple unscented cleanser - I usually only wash my face at night because my skin seems to like that more.
My skin is really dry so I also use a simple rich moisturizer. If you live in a dry or cold area, I would say to use a similar moisturizer as well.
If you’re prone to acne, you will want to find the most conservative treatment that works. For example, I use the Ordinary niacinamide and zinc blemish formula, and I only put a few drops of it in my moisturizer once every few days. I avoid spot treatments as they can be super aggressive - the most I do for a problematic pimple is to put a hydro colloid sticker on it mainly to prevent anything else from irritating it.
Generally, stay away from highly concentrated or scented products as they are just generally more risky and irritating.
Any advice beyond what I’ve typed here should come from a qualified expert that knows you/ your skin.

True. However, there are social media dermatologists who shill their own product lines or brands they work with and usually forget to mention that, apart from skincare, they used everything what's available to them in their office each time they were there. All of them have that more or less 'stronger is better' attitude when it comes to actives and even if they don't push them openly, you can see their half used tubes of prescribed tretinoids in their videos. People admire their skin and youthful appearance not due to skincare, but to the fact that they do nip, tuck, top up and retouch several times a year. People with perfectly healthy skin are using tretinoids and peel their entire lives as a snake, having to endure never ending irritations, let alone destroyed skin barrier. But they look good. Waxy, but good. Then they need another bunch of products to soothe their sore skin and the vicious circle never ends. There is no need to bath in sunscreen if you don't live in hot climate and you don't expose you skin to direct sun for hours, during highest radiation and n daily basis. It's one thing sunbathing or working in the field in tropic climate and walking your dog in Northern Europe early mornings and afternoons. Hat, cap, shady side of the street is more than enough. Of course, if the skin is not hypersensitive due to abuse of actives. Most dermatologists are here to make you buy and hooked on buying more.

An argument that I hear a lot is "we've gone thousands of years without so we don't need it now" but the primary goal of the body is to stay alive long enough to reproduce a few times, not necessarily to live to 100 or to stay wrinkle-less. My derm prescribed Cerave lotion after using a gentle cleanser, then 0.025 % tretinoin at night (after moisturizer dries), every other day for two weeks then nightly. She checked up on me at 6 weeks, I was a little dry so she added cerave healing ointment after the tret. In the day time, she gave me dapsone to use before moisturizing and using sunscreen, and I was on an oral antibiotic for 3 months. Haven’t had acne in over a year now, didn’t have any major irritation like he is talking about, and my skin looks better than ever at 41.

Yes! I have always had sensitive, dry skin and tried hundreds of expensive products, what works best? Mild exfoliant once per week, plain £2 rose water every day really calms and reduces my redness, sunscreen and coconut oil (I know there’s debate about it blocking pores but it’s honestly the best moisturiser I’ve ever used on my skin and have never had issues). I also use vitamin e oil on the rare occasion I get a blemish and it’s gone the next day. Simple, natural and cheap.

Just don’t use it religiously. Especially with toner. No more than once a week, or biweekly, if at all.

  • @Seohaila

Also people convincing you that you NEED cleaning product X, which dries out your skin so you buy a moisturizer. The moisturizer makes your skin a little too oily so you buy a toner. And don't forget to exfoliate your skin which makes it that sensitive that you use a mask directly after. And so on, soon you end up with 5-7 products you don't need. Don't fall into that trap. As the doctor said; sunscreen, keeping the skin clean and maybe a moisturizer if you needed is enough.

I use water only (plus CeraVe if it's dry here in CO ) and I get mistaken for being the youngest at work when I am actually over 40. I think it's largely about genetics.

I'm happy to see this message being spread more, I always couch my skincare talks with, this probably won't help you but it's what I do. Because I'm one of those people who because of genetics really does have to beat their skin into submission on a semi-regular basis. At one point I had a prescription ointment that I applied at night and wiped off on the morning it was functionally diluted bleach I had to use old sheets that I didn't mind being bleached as well as a t-shirt I didn't mind bleaching to hell and back and a face cloth that I didn't mind getting bleached. It worked really well but it also bleached those products and when I finished the tube I didn't get it renewed and started trying to find a routine that works for me. I need good both physical and chemical exfoliation included in my routine fairly regularly otherwise I get cystic acne on my face as well as my chest and back. It's genetic for me, my grandfather had it and had facial scars from how bad it got for him in his youth one of my brother's had it and needed to use medicated soap for a time and I have it. For me it's just learning to balance when I need to beat my skin up a little and when it needs to get some moisture added back in after beating it up because when it's bad my routine is definitely harsh enough to dry out my skin and leaving it overly dry wouldn't help either. If a person who didn't have my problems tried my skin routine they'd be doing ridiculous amounts of damage to their skin and would probably end up with more problems than they started with. But for me it's one of the only ways to prevent painful break outs at least if I don't want to go back to bleaching my sleep wear or using a medication that can have permanent impacts on your skin that on your face are great but the rest of your body not so much

I use suncream (because I easily burn and I really don’t fancy my chances with skin cancer), moisturiser (only on my face after showering) and coconut oil on my hairline (it softens the dandruff/dry skin that accumulates after the cold air touches my scalp after showering). I believe my skin is pretty flawless (especially since I was quite a spotty teen).
Also, I don’t wear make up which probably helps (natural female here).

A retinal will help if you have those clogged pores, but it’s important to remember that sometimes less is more you do not have to use a retinol every night you can alternate nights and you can’t even mix it with a mild moisturizer at night so it’s not as irritating on your skin. Sunblock is also very important a mild cleaner is also important. Vitamin C can also play a role in helping your sunscreen work better and diminishing dark spots

This is misleading. Skincare enthusiasts are already well-versed in what happens when you go overboard. Even influencers fall prey to this.
There are also skin microbiome lines and ingredients out there and it's not even a new concept. If that is your main concern, you can focus on just that. I remember seeing bifida ferment lysate back in 2009.
