SWS Extension - Cue Buss Generator - Personal Headphone Mix with Web Controls

- In this episode, we'll cover the cue buss generator from SWS Extension. This allows you to create a dedicated headphone mix for your performer(s), giving him or her the mix they need without affecting your main mix in progress.
We'll also cover setting up a web interface so the performer can control their mix from a cell phone!

NOTE: You can add more tracks to the monitor track later, just be sure the sends are prefader.
This video was hard for me to find, but great video for what I want to do. For those with bands that have trouble finding a place to rehearse/record because of the neighborhood complaints, this is so helpful.
I think if you did a similar video but titled it something like, "Monitoring system for silent band rehearsal/recording with Reaper", you'd help some people out. Of course, you'd need to expand on this to show how to do multiple discreet mixes control from phones. Cheers
I was hearing that Piano music in the BG goin 'wow these dudes have really pivoted on the sound there!' Also RIP vacuum cleaner!
Also super sick editing skills! You gotta teach me how to screencap a phone! :)
I have a OnePlus 8T running Android 11, i just use the built in android screen capture. As for the way it looks on the video, I built the phone in Fusion (Davinci Resolve) and masked the video to match the curvature of the phone. Here's how to screen capture in Android

thanks for the great content. you sound a bit Texan so I was surprised to see the mug
what do you give your dog in there 🤔
I'm actually in Tennessee, but have family in California. I bought that mug when I visited them last year. And yes, I wash it regularly 🤣
There was nothing in the mug but evidence of there having previously been coffee in it, but Belle will lick anything that smell like it may have been in the presence of people food. Made for a good outro 😉
Thanks for stopping by, you're welcome anytime!
Thanks man
Your accent is ace! So comfy 😌
Respect for filming in 4k. These quick tips are of course useful as well.
My camera is in 4K but my monitors are 1080P. I run my timeline in 1080P and upscale it at the render phase. I can only hope that reaper actually looks good upscaled ;)
Thank you
@@LetsTalkAboutReaper It seems clearer on my 1440 ultrawide for sure. You know how the fonts are in REAPER already...can be a challenge to see sometimes at lower resolutions.
Awesome Myk, thx much
Incredibly helpful, had no idea the web interface even existed! This just changed so much for me, thank you!
Really nicely done Mike!! Great presentation! Very clear and concise. Subscribed!
Awesome, thank you!
Fantastic! This explains what was left out of today's Reaper features video.
Thanks for the video, this helped a lot!
Glad to be of assistance, thanks for checking out the channel!
Thanks, makes setting up monitor mixes a lot easier. And did great that you can use your phone as a personal mixer!
Dude. this was revolutionary. It didn't cross my mind to do it this way, thanks!
Excellent presentation!
Awesome video! I like this idea a lot. Much like Cubase Control Room.
Thanks again, Myk.
Slick.
Amazing! I had set up my own custom action to do this because I had no idea SWS had this feature - but this is way more comprehensive so I'll ditch my custom action and start using this method!
I love this method and use it all the time when tracking drums
Oh and I just discovered that (a) you can tell the generator to use a track template rather than adjusting the settings manually, and (b) those settings are saved in one of several slots, and there are actions in the action list to use each of those slots (or the last used settings) so you can make adding a cue buss one-button or keyboard-shortcut action!
Great video - learned loads!
Thanks, Myk, very interesting.
I probably don't need this as I wear all the hats. Songwriter, sound designer, programmer, performer, mixer and mastering engineer. The trouble is I'm rubbish at all these jobs so the cumulative result is rubbish squared. This is going to be a new genre. There are already many people producing rubbish squared, it just needed someone to provide a descriptive name. Job done. 😃
I've always like your videos, and your style. But this one is *really* good...a solution to a problem I didn't know I had. I'll use this in the near future for sure.
This is so awesome. Thank you!
that thing is an absolute lifesaver!
Great video dude!
Hi mike, thats for what i was looking for some days ago. Really Nice Video.
Q.: What Mic are you using in front of you?
Hey, thanks for stopping by! That mic is a Rode Podmic. I like it but am still experimenting with placement and processing. Not sure if I'll ever get it perfect, but if I wait for everything to be "just right," i'll never make videos ;)
@@LetsTalkAboutReaper you're right...about tweaking the mic😉
Your voice sounds perfect to me.
Most peoples using the Shure sm7b ...but as I mentioned, it sounds really good.
Hope to see more tutorials from you!
Wow!
Thank you for another great video !! What theme are you using?
This is an older video but that looks to be the stock R6 theme. I did use My Taste a good bit back then too.
@@LetsTalkAboutReaper Thank you !!
Hi, this is an amazing feature, particularly the external phone mixer, I cant believe it exists! However, how does it work when you are trying to solo channels? I dont really understand how the solo defeat works. Say for example I want to listen to the guitars solo'ed in the controlroom while the drummer is playing along, how will i solo that channel so that its only soloed in the control room? Hope you understand my question, cheers!
i think i understand, you want mute/solo control from the control room to not affect the headphone mix for the performer. In my testing this morning, while the sends are pre-fader, it seems that mute on the parent tracks mutes the output to the sends. I am asking some questions on my Discord server to see what the hive mind thinks, and will get back with you.
great question!
Curious about the hardware configuration for monitoring during a live scratch track. Do you have a multichannel headphone amp located by your computer, with long headphone cords going to the band, or do you have long line outs going to multiple headphone amps located near the performers, and then short headphone cables?
I use the hardware out from my interface through a snake with a breakout box on the opposite end. From there I can route the channels to personal headphone amps.
Does anyone know of a way to see Reaper track METERS with a remote device ?
Didn't find any meters through the web remote...
How did you create the click track? It sounds like the Reaper metronome but I can figure out how to route the Reaper metronome to a track so that it shows up in the headphone mix.
Create a blank track, then grab a time selection. Move the edit cursor to the beginning and go to Insert>Click Source in the menu
Can you pan tracks on your personal mix? Without affecting sa main mix?
Can you create a web monitor without an external interface? If I send the Cue Buss to Output 1/2, then setup the web interface, it doesn't let me select the "Drum Monitor" track... did I miss something here? If not, I'll just setup the web interface while connected to the interface.
To my understanding, the track must be bound to a hardware output other than the master. If you just want a web based mix and transport control, use the web theme/template called "fancier." I plan to do a video (hopefully today if work is slow) showing how to set this up, though you've really already seen most of the steps here. I often use both the mixer template and the monitor template so I can control my in ear at my drums but also control Reaper if I am recording by myself.
@@LetsTalkAboutReaper that gives me some good ideas... I'll be at the interface for testing soon enough. It does mean that it's hard to set this up in some sort of template though.
@@LetsTalkAboutReaper OH!! Now I see... the more_me interface is only controlling the mix sent to the hardware headphone amp. I was thinking that I could send the more_me mix to the mobile device and monitor wirelessly through that. This now makes sense to me. Thanks.
HA!!! Got it! Thanks so much! (off to find your coffee button now)
