Gonna take a chance and make an assumption here... didn't we all know running a cable randomly through the house while taping it to walls was always an option?
Exactly, nothing new here. This is pretty much the most unelegant way of doing it.
That's funny because I really expected something special.
@@TomTKK you can also contact the property management company and ask permission to drill and run a cable. Otherwise just drill and pay the fee when you move out. If someone did it the way you described they probably wouldn't class it as damage, since it looks so tidy. Its actually useful to have grommets covering a hole between rooms.
lmao
@@TheEchelon messy, but works :)
I’ve got to say, when I read the video title I thought I’m about to find some ingenious way of getting cable to rooms without having to run them through walls.
Had I given it more thought, I should have known this is what I’m about to see, which is in fact, the last thing I wanted to see 😂😂
My thoughts exactly
Me too.
Same here. I was hoping to see a brilliant idea on how to modify my current setup (which is exactly what this guy is showing on this video). I guess this is as good as it can be without drilling holes.
Ok but like... how do we do this AND stay married?
Exactly...
just do more clips and a longer cable to run on wall in a clean way
Lmao
i want to stay married, so this is not the solution for me.
Why stay married? 😂
😂😂😂😂
Thanks for the video! I moved from Mexico and I think this is the best way to do it. Even if you owned the house, the houses here are fragile!
The Adhesive clips are a genius idea! I have a pet bird and I do not want him to chew on the cables so those adhesive clips are a great way to keep the cables away from his reach :D thank you!
i like the 3M stuff
You can often get away with pulling the carpet back in small sections with long nose pliers (or run a screwdriver under it) where its tucked against the wall between the smoothedge and the wall, pop your cable under then tuck the carpet back on top. As long as you don't remove it from the smooth edge nails it goes back as if no one was there and the cable is completely hidden. No good for your wooden floors though!
Yeah wooden is a pest, didn’t really have an alternative
I have to say I don't miss renting.... When we bought the house we are in now I ran ethernet to every room. Good job mate :)
Yep! I’d have a full network rack setup if I could
Hayden, that's about the best way to deal with it considering your situation. You could try a mesh setup, but unless you're using wired backhaul, it wouldn't be any better than (and probably worse) than the way you did it. Now - if you take the main cable from your NBN (so precious) box, and then set up mesh in the house - that'd be possibly a little less cable, and potentially better wireless performance across the house.
Regardless, good video mate!
Thanks Jim. Yeah all good, although a mesh system would mean I’d need to buy more AP’s too 😀 although I do like AP’s, it might cause QRM on my 2.4 GHz operations. Cheers mate
@HamRadioDX Have you considered the newer powerline ethernet options? Depending on speed requirements, and a few other factors, it may be viable, just purchase one from somewhere with a good return policy just in case.
Do you think this can hold 2 flat Ethernet cables with one clip?
If I were the landlord, I wouldn’t object to getting a tradie in and getting him to run the cable from the garage through the ceiling and terminating in a nice professional rj45 socket in the living room. Maybe suggest going 50/50 on the cost. You won’t be the only tenant who’ll want this. People expect data now like electricity or gas.
Yeah that’s true, I should raise it
@@HamRadioDX Most of time you will find the guy between the landlord and tenant is the real problem in this regard.
All I can say is that's the best you can do where you can't run cable behind walls or ceilings, you do what you can.
Pretty much yeah. Don't even notice it now!
Could you have just used Powerline Adapters? Sending the broadband from the garage to the house no cables needed or do you have no power in the garage?
Holy. How many metres was that ethernet cable?
i was just planning to selotape mine on the floor. lol. it's not pretty but i cant drill holes.
Just what I was looking for! At some point I may run ethernet thru the walls, but for now wanted a somewhat clean way of running a cable to my sons room.
I have my landlord's assent but I only want to drill to install clips, not go through the attic or anything else. So this may be of use to me.
How do you run down the stairs though?
Omg thankyou dude this exactly what I needed
No worries at all
Lead in from the splitter in the street will be coming upto the garage where the PCD (grey box on outside wall is)
then single lead in coming into the NTD.
annnd reply under wrong account.. ahh wells.
Installs are done to a timeframe and also depends on internal pathways / what is alread pre-existing at the house for the installation to be done.
they can be relocated, just costly.
True! Thanks Brad 👍
Isn't the cable squezeed by the door if you put like that just like 1:09 ?
Did you get that fixed?
Thank you for the video, gave me a great idea to solve for running ethernet cable in my space.
Glad it helped
Same here. Now I don't have to but a staple gun etc
This is Genius, don't know why I went thru the trouble of drilling thru drywall, climbing and crawling around up the attic space. Fishing the cat 6 cable, and patching, repairing and paint all the holes i made throughout the residence. 😅
To answer your question, the install the box there because it is typically the closest location to the box out front that feeds your street
Yeah... but it's lazy by the installers. Makes more practical sense to move it further inside the home. They just didn't want to waste too much money or time on extending the fibre
@@HamRadioDX but if it's a rental then the ISP will have to re run the box with EVERY new resident. I work for an ISP and I do my fair share of installs. There are some houses that have rotating residents. And seeing how you never actually lose money on the actual install it is a huge waste to constantly reinatall to a new location dependin on the new customers tastes. However on the flip side we usually just install ours in the center of the house (as much as possible) that way our wirless will most likely reach the whole house no matter who moves in. Most of our customers use mainly wireless anyway.
Lots of exposed cables, though -- how would you do this in a house that has rabbits?
Nice video - but I do the whole house network a different way.
I have an Orbi mesh network system. It is a little more money, but the backhaul of the mesh is actually faster than the ethernet that I had run throughout the house when I moved in. I now cover my whole house and detached garage with wireless. The system is a little pricey, but it does save a lot of frustration. You can also buy a smaller version (1 satellite vs 2 satellites). I have almost 30 devices attached with no problems with speed. That is a mixture of computers, Raspberry Pi's, hotspots, TVs, and even a couple of NAS units.
Yeah, I have amassed a lot of technology :D
It adds up hey. I look through my lease list and can’t believe how many devices you rack up
Tried mesh .. cut my speeds in half :(
Great, now any kids in your house will get autism and any old people will get dementia. 2.4ghz will rape anyone with a weak immune system. Fries the brain
@@intellybitwith wired backhaul? I believe that issue only occurs if you’re trying to do wireless on dualband. Triband is usually recommended for wireless backhaul with the extra band used for dedicated for the routing the mesh
@@drow488 I have a tp link mesh . Main mesh is in rout second is in my garage with my ps5 plugged into it and it’s slow
Why not run the cables under floor boards? You live in the UK that has floor boards right?
I think minor correction in video. NBN does not install/or even recommend install NTD to furthest point.. They install to the shortest point lead-in from street.. Customer has the choice to place it at their own peril, but it is not NBN's decision.
They don’t have attics in Australia?
Nice and dandy but i have the problema that my cable cant pass under the doors lol
Dangerous trip hazzards, wiggly laid wires, beautiful colour matching. Wow. This video has shown all of my favourite things. 🤣
A trick I have used is if you have forced air heating/cooling running the cables through the ductwork.
But can you ever close your doors without damaging the cable?
Yeah, I cut the cable using a door, at first the connection was just getting worse and worse and I couldn't understand why.
Wouldn't powerline adapters work just as good?
Nope
Thank you from Edmonton, Canada :)
Speaking of Bunnings, you should do a Heath Franklin's Chopper edition for Ham radio operators too.
Ohhh dear, I can see that ending badly 😂
Based on the amount of adverting in the video,,, Bunnings must really like this guy lol
This video is hilarious. Do a video of how to do laundry if you don't have a washing machine.
My wife would kid me in the nards having all those cables. Luckily I can drill, and paid a guy one time long ago to run an ethernet line from the fiber box to my office.
Great. Those clips seem fit for the job, instead of using a tape to hold the wires down.
great solutions
the connection often lost, when you close the door with cable over it
I live 30km from Melbourne cbd and I’m not eligible for nbn. I’m supposed to be happy with fibre to the exchange which goes though the trees for 3km. I have had to get fixed wifi and have their repeater on the hill for free 100/50.
Fixed wireless I used to have in the early days… is it still congested or have they fixed that?
0:25 they install it there because it is usually closest to the road, and makes their job easier. Same deal with the lazy Chorus broadband installers in New Zealand. cheers
This is the beat solution when I’m living in a apartment, no need to drill that will cause the landlord to be pissed off
you can aslo make a extender using a router and the use the router to connect LAN
Powerline adapters are a thing, and work surprisingly well if they're configured and installed correctly. Older adapters are prone to noise, but newer, high quality adapters with power passthrough are a very good substitute nowadays. Obviously mileage may vary, but every solution I've employed has delivered almost the exact rated speed.
Yup, Powerline adapters have been my solution. Same issue as him here, however I did a 50/50 with a 10m Cat6 cable. Running a powerline to move the router in to the house from the garage, then an ethernet cable from the router to my setup.
it is if have power points at right level..
Otherwise the built in hub ones, like i mentioned above, are only option... My power points are 4x together, not seperate, (older house), and just above the skirting, so plugging these fat bastards in will occupy adjacent, so one left unused. Probably ok if you can use power strip/ extension., iF they can even be plugged in at all,, but the points really are not that high from the skirting. And running extension cord for each, just to get newer gigabit devices probably will sacrifice throughput anyway... their designed to be plugged directly into a wall socket for best performance Quite frankly, their not cheap, and paying $100, just to 'test' is not an option. really
I have a TP link deco P9 with powerline, but it's powerline backhaul tops out at about 150 megabits even when to access points are plugged into the same electrical socket
@@andrewziem370 Decided on the gigabit adapters (with AC passthough) and just attacked then to extension cords, along with a few $20 switches for more ports..
Seems to work ok.
you still sacrifice speed using the powerline adapters. they do work and are better than wifi. but nothing beats a direct wired connection.
Would definitely recommend using a slimrun cable and probably a color more akin to whatever youre putting it on. For white walls try to find a white cable, brown for wood, black for darker surfaces in general. With a slim it takes up less room and should be able to hug corners tighter to make the cable even more invisible. Id also try running it along the edge between the wall and ceiling if possible, could potentially make it even harder to see or just overall less distracting and hazardous
slimrun cables are best for short lengths under 60 feet long
When I built my house I got the NBN box put right next to my data cabinet!
Haha good! It must be just laziness putting it right near the entry point to the house here
@@HamRadioDX my mate who did it say they are supposed to put it to the closest point but the garage is the easiest so back to laziness!
why not using tplink powerline internet adapter through old house wiring ?
They create RF interference which disrupts my amateur radio reception
does it have good connection though? like is it slow
Nope
@@HamRadioDX what are your speeds looking like, like whats the ping, download and upload speed?
I am just lazy so I just lay it on the floor. Which works out for me. I take my laptop from my bedroom to the kitchen without unplugging the ethernet and pulling the wire across the house.
lol
Doesn't the cable get damaged when the cable goes through a door and you close the door?
Nope, there is a small gap under the door
There are also flat thin cat cables if the round cable are too bulky for the door
Single man runs cable wherever he wants
Goodness gracious, what did I watch?
My wife will kill me doing that!
And I can’t sleep after doing that…
Great isn't it champ
Nicely done. Those are like Command Strip fixings.
I am feeling incredibly stupid. I've been racking my brain as to how to run one simple 10-foot cable along my baseboard. I already HAVE these cord clips and didn't think of it. A giant facepalm for me 🤦♀️ Thank you for the video.
No worries at all! I've had mine in for about 5 months and the clips haven't come up. Just make sure you use rubbing alcohol on the surface first to get rid of any dirt/dust. Thanks!
Bro I live in nz and you saved me with this! I’ll give it a try!
The missus is going to love cables through the house.
uh, since it is adsl you cant put it anywhere I recommend the pots spltter.. (plain old telephone system) 2 wires stick into though for your phone lol
What am I supposed to do about the doors, they're cutting into it.
Drill a massive hole in the side?
@@HamRadioDX this video literally has "without drilling" in the title so what you just said makes no sense.
Please stop making jokes I really need help with this.
buy outdoor rated Cat 6 and run it outside a window to another window, like how you would do for an outdoor tv antenna. Anything over 60 feet get 24 gauge or thicker. if it's patch cable, it will be too thin and you will get a lot of interference if the Cat 6 runs past electrical wires
Lol 99% of wives would hate this
Hahahah I was going to say "tell me you don't have a Mrs without telling me you don't have a Mrs".
The Video was a bit old for that gag.
i'm now a Bunnings fan boy. thanks
Good stuff champ
what about if there's a door in the way? that means i have to drill a wall huh
no you can run the cable outside through a window the long way think harder not smarter
Hope you had a snag with those Bunnings trips.
Always need to grab a snag there
My favourite part of this video is when you said you didn't worry about what the cable looked like when you got to your studio 😅😅 like it was so neat before 😅😅
Cables are fine - as long as you don't trip over them!
Maybe try the roof through>wall cavity>plug sockets
pull up a corner of the carpet above the garage. drill a 25mm hole. fish it out of a downlight hole in the garage near the nbn.
You missed the critical point of the video
Why would you waste your time with Cat5? It is incapable of gigabit speeds only megabit speed (10/100mb). Unless of course you used Cat5E (E for enhanced) which is in fact gigabit capable. But in that case why not run only Cat6 or Cat6a? Far better insulation, less chance of crosstalk or interference, etc. Don't waste your time with cat5.
Nice job Mate. I am going through the same challenge at the moment and you've given me some brilliant ideas. Thanks for posting this and more importantly where to find these items
Good Grief, very untidy job. theres always wires in the walls that can be used to PULL through newer cables, and theres also flexi wire cables for just that also
you missed the point of the video
Furthers point from the house is the closest point to the access point. NBN cost saving.
Now that we have Flat CAT 7 cables (CAT 8 is also available) that would have made this job much easier.
Avoid Cat5 cables if you can. Cat6 is way better shielded from an RF perspective. I was having problems with birdies etc replaced all cat5 cables (even short jumper leads) with Cat6 and problem 99.9% gone.
Oops did I say Cat5 in the video? I actually use Cat6! Good catch Nigel!
Pretty sure CAT 5e is just as well shielded. Normal CAT 5 is very old now.
I doubt cat 5 or cat5e compares to 6 as I'm pretty sure all cat6 was required to be more of a plenum rated for fire resistance due to home fires not to mention the data transfer speeds at greater distance.
CAT5e can reach the same speeds at Cat6. it's just not 'future-proofing'
Yeah most go cat5e by default, I used to use cat6 then saw cat7 so on that where I am but since swap to cat8 where I am and yeah I know my fiber speed is only 1/40 of what cat8 can handle
Love it when Australian wifi is so bad its not even the bare minimum to play warzone
Would definitely recommend using powerline adapters or 2.5g MoCa adapters ❤
I have a 500mbps connection and the powerline adapters ended up with 60mbps throughput and 100ms latency. It's less than 30ft run in a closed circuit. You are completely at the mercy of the wiring. Not worth the $100.
@@halo2glitcherzBetter than running janky wires on the ground. Makes you look like a psychopath.
@@MrBigspendn a psychopath pays for 500mbps and is only getting 50mbps because of those shitty adapters.
@@MrBigspendn Rather janky wires than have dog odor in the house.
The powerline adapters are good too
They can create noise on HF though

A lot of cable. What about a mesh network?
I required LAN downstairs regardless of mesh WLAN, mainly because too many devices which don’t have WiFi. Plus I’m QRV on 2.4 GHz. The less noise on that band the better 😉
At this point I would almost use either et over power. Or if they have coax in the house.. Run eithernet over coax..

Yep.. internet is going backwards here
I imagine those clips peel off during the summer.
Haven't peeled off over the past 3 summers
I would have run the ethernet in to the hallway upstairs and installed a good wifi access point.
This would work in my ideal world. In my reality however, my wife would punch me in the head for doing this.
Why not just run it thru the roof cavity and drop it down to the router , then no ugly blue cords everywhere??
😂😂😂 haha you are so funny! I was like I wonder how he did it. Lol you did it like they do in the old days. At this rate why not run the cables outside your home.
They put the nbn box there because its the cheapest and easiest place to put it. Fiber can only bend like 3 times i think so if you wanted it in another room you would need more conduit and more fiber and more labor, wich would raise the total build cost. australian homes are expencive enough so thats the way it is
This seems like a Bunnings advert
😂😂 lowest prices… are just…. Kidding
Couldnt you find a better colour ethernet cable at least? 😅
What''s wrong with blue?

It is innately stupid that buildings these days are not built with integrated cable pathways of which we have had australian standards going back to the early 90s, originally AS-3084 (for pathways/ducting) and AS-3080 (integrated cabling) and AS-3085 (for documentation). These in their current consolidated publication are now ISO/IEC 11801.
Unfortunately the supplemental provisions in these standards are voluntary and builders seem to want to minimize up-front costs leading to unnecessary costs retrofitting a building with pathways which due to the additional costs is usually done ad-hoc thus defeating the purpose of the voluntary standards making buildings receptive to and flexible in facilitating wired communications services.
The Mandatory cabling standard (TS009) only address safety to users, equipment and installers/technicians and therefore requires a registered cabler to do the installation and maintenance work in accordance with Australian Wiring Rules.
In this case the cable passing through duct and attached (although by stick-on clips) makes the cable fixed premises cabling requiring installation by a registered cabler or to be done under direct the supervision of a registered cabler with endorsements relevant to the cable installation.
If renting, just talk to the home owner, and explain how you will upgrade their property value by running a few ethernet cables professionally.
They would almost always agree
Or Mesh Wifi
