This was the final test I needed to determine whether the S23 Ultra was what I wanted to upgrade to from my S10+. Finally a phone that seems to be an all rounder of this generation, and which is a worthy upgrade of my S10+.

Yes, I have the S23U and it's pretty good. I have from day 1 activated the battery protect option that limits charge to 85%, and the phone still gives me a day of use. I consider my usage heavy as I watch quite a lot of RUclips during my spare time. According to my on screen time I get 6.47 hours on a single charge. I'm sure if I allowed my phone to charge to 100% I could easily get 8 hours of screen on time.

It’s absolutely outstanding to see the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra nearly match the iPhone 14 Pro Max. I switched from my S22U for the 14PM simply because of battery life, and while I’m happy with my iPhone, Samsung deserves all the kudos for launching a phone that massively improved the battery life.
Even more impressive considering the more intensive software with less optimized apps, a bigger display with a higher resolution, and a 5000mah battery powering a literal stylus inside of it.
Edit: I never said the stylus made a difference in battery life 🤦
Yeah to be honest since it has a higher resolution display, more pixels to push, and still comes close means that if this was set to 1080p it would easily beat the iPhone

Hands down to the SD8 Gen 2. It's really a significant improvement. Also you're so lucky to have S23 not having an exynos variant. Samsung took advantage of the sd chip this time. What I find impressive is how the iPhone can still have that much crazy battery life with such a smaller battery. You can tell the software/hardware optimization is EXTREMELY tight.
Yes. I always think that if Apple had some brain cells, theyd ditch the heavy stainless steel for a hardened aluminum frame like the S23 Ultra, make the phone 1mm thicker like the S23U, raise the battery to at least 5000mAh and show the world how battery life matters. Imagine + 2 more hours SOT = AMAZING! But nooooo..we need a heavy thin phone so that on a paper it looks good but is less practical
@@ancientslav4863 it’s enough for more people so why worry about it, but bigger battery means more optimization and maybe the level of optimization that they have now isn’t possible on a bigger battery
iPhone is still heavier and doesn't have multitasking and battery replacement costs twice as much so battery size doesn't matter
@@DamianLesiuk android users can’t take a shit about apple doing something good?
@@blue_ig1 and what is so good? I mentioned to you why smaller battery size doesn't matter when it's charging twice as long, the phone weighs much more and battery replacement costs twice as much. Their battery is smaller but the CPU is twice as big and much more efficient to compensate for it.
I just leave mine in "Light mode". It's been a phenomenal cure for the range anxiety the S22U used to incur.

New update supposedly boosts Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 performance like 10%. Camera is way faster and the phone bemchmarks like 200 points higher. The update isn't out in the US yet though
I have had the update and cannot notice the difference. However, it is superfast and slick in everyday use so I am not sure how much faster they can make it, other than for games.
@@andyH_England how is the shutter lag? Is it still as bad as all the generations before?
@Eulehund99 Yes, it is still poor. Worst in any flagship, even if you use the new setting for less quality. I think Samsung is unable to fix this with software as it has been around for 2+ years.

hey David, can you please do a speed test comparison between 1+ 11 and 1+11R as soon as possible !!
It isn't a battery test, until Phone Buff drops a video on it.
Both phones use 4nm chips from TSMC, so they are expected to be quite similar. The difference comes down to how well the phone's OS is optimized with the chip.
Battery size difference also affects it

@@thespicyswede9302 yeah it’s crazy that the iPhone still beats the S23U despite having quite a smaller battery. Imagine the iPhone with a 5000mAH battery. Would be insane
@@educated_idiot4036 and iPhone with such big battery would be thick and much heavier
@@educated_idiot4036the iPhone being able to get that kind of battery life with a smaller battery is due to the difference in the screen. The screen is, by far, the biggest consumer of power in any phone and the resolution is a big part of that. The iPhone 14 Pro Max has a 14% smaller battery but it also has a screen with 19% few pixels.
Awesome improvements by Qualcomm and Samsung. You should have checked the heat as well. Galaxy has the best heat management this year.
I saw another video, and the iPhone is similar.
Thank you for the test👍
Thanks for the great video but why don't you include the camera app?
The test doesn't take into consideration the usage learning process of the S23U which takes a couple of weeks to kick in so battery life is further extended. I'm coming off the S10+ snapdragon version and the permutations to get the required battery life are great such as Screen Resolution settings and various battery saving modes. Bixby can also set a certain resolution for a given app which optimises the phone further.
The battery is also newer (fresh in galaxy ) either way if the iPhone had the same size battery it would obliterate the s23 ultra on a time per mah basis.
@@aaronlimitless Definitely agree with you the iphone is more power efficient achieving the run time on a smaller battery. Everyone is invested in different ecosystems but we all like to have good battery life. Personally s23u is too large for me so I stick with phones with a small form factor and good battery life. It's a hard balance to achieve!!
Don’t forget the iPhones battery is also 13% smaller lol. Efficient operating systems don’t need to “learn” to be more power efficient. They’re supposed to be efficient right out of the box.
S23 ultra battery is far more powerful than iphone 14. Check bigger RUclipsrs than this guy and i tested by myself. Check both phones by yourself first than comment.

Man oh man! I had my eyes open at many instances witnessing how efficient S23U has become than it's predecessor and most importantly to 14pm in many areas. Its actually amazing what can be done with proper optimization. Kudos to Samsung! 👌🏻
Its just because tsmc makes sd2
It was little to do with Samsung; quite the opposite, the S22U's SD8G1 was made at Samsung Fabs, but Qualcomm sacked them, and the chips are now made by TSMC. Samsung is the one that has caused the last two years poorly efficient chips, and they have yet to learn why their fans are thanking Samsung for the S23U. They should thank Qualcomm for finally ditching Samsung!
If I disabled all the bloat apps that can be in Settings/Apps, took out the stylus, It would probably even beat the iphone.
This was really impressive for the galaxy! Hopefully this can push apple to innovate some more..
Thx bro for this 👏 job
The S23 Ultra is a beast mode phone! Galaxy Ultra series has always been a functionality and versatility monster but fell short of the iPhone in performance and battery life. But that gap has been pretty much closed now with no compromise on the Galaxy's strengths. It's amazing how a single generation's gap brought such a huge jump in those categories, pretty much nullifying the only two key advantages the iPhone held. And it's still going to destroy the iPhone in charging speeds, so that's that.
Only on the surface is this a minor upgrade over the S22 Ultra. Under the hood, it's a pretty substantial upgrade.

1:41 bro the texting what is going on lol. It's soo funny.
Samsung finally gives us the bare minimum. As a Samsung S23U owner coming from the S22U, I find it interesting how people are celebrating Samsung finally doing the bare minimum. When we've been starved of the basics functioning reliably and as expected, this is how people finally react. Processor parity and performance, battery life, heat management all these are issues that have plagued Samsung phones for ages now. What still bothers me is that there is no guarantee of Samsung maintaining this quality next year with the S24 series. It's not just planned obsolescence people, it is also deliberately holding off giving people consistent quality and reliability so that they keep hoping for microscopic improvements and keep byung phones every year.
Seriously! People will buy the S24 thinking it’ll be even better than the S23 but Samsung will throttle the S24 in some way to then make the S25 better and the reviews will predictably be great! This cycle will repeat. It started with the iPhone 11 Pro Max. The first iPhone with great battery life. The 12 was a battery failure with the 13 becoming the best ever and the 14 now worse in battery than 13. It’s all planned.

This year has been incredible when it comes to competition between flagship phones, specifically between Samsung and Apple
Basically if you want better GPU performance, better photos, and a little bit better display you go with the S23 Ultra, but if you want better CPU performance, better videos, and a little bit better battery life you go with the iPhone 14 Pro Max, but in either case you can’t go wrong with either options, because even the stuff that the iPhone beats Samsung in or vice versa, there’s usually a very minimal difference that it makes both phones insanely good, competition is great for us consumers because it means companies will actually put some effort into their smartphones
actually at this point they are equally on those grounds..id go for the S23U given you also get a lot of features that iPhone just doesn't have..
For gaming iphone is king
@Rapkyrpang Khongdup but by how much of a margin? cause frankly it's breeze playin games on the S23U

I think this test is pretty accurate and tells comparable results. However I feel like samsung smartphones need like a week to calibrate user usage routine. I have bought the standard s23 and after 2 days I can tell a really big difference based on my daily usage. On saturday and Sunday can reach up to 9 hours of screen time because I'm mostly on youtube and watching live streaming events, understands very well how to modulate battery and performace. Really solid device.
The iPhone also adjusts its battery based on user routine so I doubt much will change
@@michealadebz Of course, but IOS is far more optimized on the app side in fact I noticed a 15% improvement on autonomy. Android needs to cut off a lot of background processing and needs a little bit of extra work on RAM usage. Iphone great battery life comes all from software improvements(they don't need to upgrade battery capacity as android does)I was saying android needs more time to get to its best.
@@teodorococca9681 That is the way Android works, the apps are controlled by the OS, so down to Samsung to optimise background stuff. The iOS apps are controlled by the apps, so they can use an API to get better background optimisation. As you say there are differences, but when it boils down to it, it is Samsung that needs to optimise better, rather than relying on freeware from Google (Apple spends billions developing iOS every year).

As an S22 Ultra user I am happy to see the S23 Ultra do so well against the iPhone! I already feel that I have good battery and I lowered my resolution to 1080p because I don't care about resolution at this point and I saw a huge improvement on battery life on the S22 Ultra. Imagine the S23 Ultra!
I use 720p on my S23U and easily get 7.5hrs SOT over two days, which is enough for the vast majority of average users.
Lowing your render resolution shouldn’t make that big of a difference with battery life. Just because your GPU is rendering in 1080p still means content is being upscaled and almost all of the same pixels on your 1440p panel have to be lit.

I like that this test actually used everyday apps and videos for the test. It seems similar to my use case except Snapchat may have been TikTok instead for me. So idk how much TikTok vs Snapchat would effect the battery drain? But regardless, the battery life was neck and neck which gives me confidence!
Could you do a battery test for the S23 plus? I feel like a lot of tech channels are sleeping on that phone's battery. There are barely any tests on that phone here on RUclips.
Apple will have a massive advantage on the app cycle test, mainly due to how IOS deals with background apps vs Android. IOS essentially freezes/stops the app when closed while Android will keep the app running in the background, increasing CPU usage and loading up the RAM much more. The most surprising thing coming from the test is how much more power is required by the speaker to produce a similar output. Cool test!
That is rather misleading. Apple does not close these apps; as in Android, they are still in RAM. When RAM is near full, Apple will compress apps, but mostly 20+ apps can easily remain in RAM before that is needed. Of course, an efficient OS will stop running apps in the background if you are not using them, so Android's so-called disadvantage is more to do with Apple's better optimisation. I think your point is moot.
What do you mean by they keep running in the background? I don't know how iOS works but on Android onPause/onStop lifecycle method would be triggered.
nice to see the S23Ultra matching the iPhone's battery life, great job Samsung for such a nice phone
Iphone is 40 minutes ahead what u smokin niggga
When will you be filming the smaller models!
Iv been watching phonebuff since my high school almost a decade or ?? 😅😅😅
This 5% is not a major difference by considering the fact that we all know how wonderfully Samsung had improved the battery life of their S22 series devices after 3 months of OS updates. So I will consider them to be equal as of now. Also S23U has more complex OS compared to IPhone 14PM and that's why their battery sizes are fair based on their OS differences.
Good joke, they didn’t improve nothing with the software updates. One UI is full of bugs.
@@dominic7012 maybe you are the unlucky one or maybe you don't even own a Samsung phone. OneUI is the best Android UI in the smartphone industry and this fact is supported by multiple reviewers all over the world. But yes, the experience of low end Samsung device and a flagship Samsung device will always be different even if both are running on OneUI.
This is huge, absolutely huge. Samsung has a pretty heavy skin on top of Android, and optimizing it to the point that it beats iOS is hands down respect. Yes they had to have a bigger batterh but the display and the speakers are also different. Also, while I do hate Samsung for quite a bit different things, this is just hats off to them for optimization.
Androids best and current phone still lost the last year’s iPhone tho…
Beats iphone??😂 it lost..
It lost… even with a much bigger battery. And stanbytime on iphone is way better than on android
Lol keep cryng salty android fanboy iphone has a smoother better display world best smartphone display by dxomark best cameras by mkbhd and best speed and battery by phonebuff
@@vikinnorway6725 What! You clearly just saw that the standby time is better on the Galaxy right?
@@Akkk117 The F*** you taking about? Iphone's 90% of displays are made by Samsung.
