Project Farm, just an average person trying to show us not to get screwed over by the products on the market. Excellent Video keep them coming. if I had more than 2 thumbs they would all be up :)
I hadn't used my weedwacker with its original blade for years. It was horrible and I was going to give it away. I remembered that you did a video years ago...and I searched and found it. I bought your suggested 32 tooth blade and it's FANTASTIC. It went from garbage to great because I figured that a different blade wouldn't be much better. You rescued a trimmer and now I have a well working piece of equipment.
You put a smile on my face because 25 years ago I had one of the first Stihl straight trimmers and a carbide tooth blade was not available. We had 5 acres of semi-forest, so I made a bushing to put one of my old 9" carbide table saw blades on it. I cleared a lot of brush and limbs that day. KL
@@Zx14rrrrrrrrrrr you can buy a saw for 5 bucks at a yard sale. And if you didnt want that small tree why let it grow? There would have been many chances to mow down the sapling or trim it. Or buy clippers either you live in an area where you need a saw for your property or you have a small enough property that you would see the tree starting to grow
I use a blade similar to the renegade. I love it. I've been using it to clear land of cedar trees and hedge trees. It beats bending over with a chainsaw any day. Plus it is a lot more time efficient. Cedar and hedge are a constant annoyance in pastures.
I'd second that, I haven't used any saw blades on a trimmer, but I've had some grass trimmer kick up and cut my leg pretty deep. Pants and chaps seem like a good idea.
I use the Renegade blade on trees up to about 5" -- but I use it on a a brush cutter with a harness. The harness does not allow the blade to come into contact with you. I've cleared acres of small trees and brush with them and my Husqvarna 223R. The harness makes a huge difference in both safety and usability. I have videos of it's use on my channel for those interested.
Todd, The trimmer you were using was a stihl 4 mix to low of rpm for the triangular blade. I bought my blades from stihl. I did not know they made aftermarket ones I'm an OEM guy. I have two stihl FS85R two-stroke trimmers straight shaft solid shaft. And what kind of device review thing at the bottom to hold the blade on? It's supposed to have some sort of special washer that looks funny with a big can look and steel piece and then a reverse threaded nut. The reason why I say this is because I six years ago when I moved into this house I cleared a quarter acre with one of those blades that triangular one and I was going through brush and everything it was the RPM that did it I was slammed the machine back and forth they didn't break and it still runs. Excellent video I don't know a blade I like the best I kind of say the Forrester. For ease of sharpening. General repair
Sharpening can be a plus when you go to cut a 3" tree only to find in it's center is a old piece of barbed wire it grew up around. It's like "Why is this tree shooting sparks!?"
I've been using the Grass Gator with their heavy duty metal blades for years, and I absolutely love it. They aren't going to take down trees, but they can make quick work of brush. At our property it's very easy to run into hidden rocks, fencing material and other hard objects, when cutting brush. So I would never even consider using a fixed blade. The free swinging blades on the Grass Gator are pretty forgiving with such encounters.
Definitely going to get one of these blades to try. I've got some hedge rows to take down. I've used a chainsaw for this kind of stuff before and it's dangerous and it destroys a chain. A video Idea I have is reciprocating sawblades. I have had some poor luck with "hi quality" blades and wasted a lot of money on them.
Diablo carbide tipped are the MACK DADDY to me. I had to cut through a set of torsion bars on my truck and they were the only thing I could find that cut it. I tried all sorts of other blades but the Diablo were the only one that actually cut that tough metal.
I can vouch for the forester. It has been incredible. I also have the other 2 circular saws as backup. I havent worn out the forester blade yet, so i havent gotten to try them quite yet
When I was younger we used regular circular saw blades to clear brush on the farm. They worked well but did out that it did matter what trimmer type you put it on. If you use a trimmer with a Down sweep in the shaft instead of a straight shaft and gear box it will break the shaft in no time.
I know your joking, but since in the US it's prefectly legal to own a flamethrower, and many people use them for brush removal, weed killing, and pest controll, there's probably a flamer attachment for a weed trimmer out there somewhere.
"ideal for all brush cutting applications", also has chainsaw like teeth. " *BLADE IS FOR CUTTING GRASS. THIS THING COULD KILL YOU IF YOU USE IT TO CUT BRUSH* " 🤔 (edit) ITS ALSO CALLED "FORESTER"! HAHAHA
Legalese "cover your arse".. of course, just putting a "danger" label on something terribly dangerous doesn't actually release you from any legal responsibility.
After getting an old scythe from a neighbor id never use a weed wacker again except for up against corners. For just high grass to large weeds scythe is just as fast, lighter, cheaper, silent, dont vibrate your hands, dont need fuel. You can get away from ground bees when you chop over them cause youll hear them first. And most importantly it looks awesome so you enjoy using it.

I was dumb enough to buy the gas gator I have a nice scar on my caff from the blade breaking off and shooting back in to my leg. Partly my fault for wearing jean shorts but man it only laster 10 minutes!
If i use the normal string head im fine but if i use triple metal blade or cutting blade there is always the fear in my head that the blade breaks of and hits me. I dont really know why that is and if it could happen.
I once had quality metal cutting blade break, pieces slapped me on my face good thing when it came in contact it was perpendicular to the skin and I was wearing safety goggles. Now I even wear a face shield. It scared the hell out of me, now I respect tools even more.
Ok so on your advice I bought the renegade hybrid , Which I had something like that before, I put it on and am oh so pleased with that it's a beast ,I also ordered the Craftop 3 bladed 1 for light brush and grass, I don't have that yet, But after watching this video you certainly have done your homework and anyone that wants to work less at it should TAKE THIS ADVICE, Thank you...PS I also subbed.Well It's been weeks since this review and I did get to use the craftop 3 bladed blade and am also very pleased with it, A win -win situation for me, Thank you.
After I looked at my upcoming project, that tree is light brush. I had two areas to clear, in two different states, and both of them seem like they came out of the jungle. Luckily both are fairly small but too big to do by hand.
I used your method a lot but now I use a hammock, a goat, and a beer. I don't have to pay for gas and I can drink more beer because I don't have to worry about the fire.
I bought the Renegade blade for my Stihl FS 85 weed cutter. the blade works like magic on anything you can reach! The only concern is that, in cutting larger branches, the blade can bind fairly easily. Idling the engine, working the blade out and back cutting the branch seems to go a long way to solving the problem. Thank you for doing this video - you've made my fence line clearing so much easier!
As always another good video, my dad said they used to use 6 inch bicycle chains back in the 70's for clearing brush on the farm because they were always running into buried farm equipment parts etc. That couldn't be seen. Keep em coming.
@@ProjectFarm You just need to start charging the neighborhood to mow all the lawns..they will just wondering why your messing around with all these old mowers, like has has to get a new mower ever 20 minutes and it always smoking. .lol
Great information. Years ago I was tired of wimpy thin weed wacker string. Garage door cable works well on grass but it unravels then loses its effectiveness. 12 gauge steel wire works great on grass but it doesn't last long. Nylon baling twine works well on grass. I got one of those triangular cutters like the one you had with nylon blades except mine had metal blades, best one yet for heavy grass and very light brush, very poor Chinese quality, it only lasted about 2 days. Got a triangular blade that had blunt cutting sides, I sharpened those and it worked well on grass and light brush. My last trial was putting on a carbide skill saw blade, which is great on light to heavy brush.
A great follow-up would be a video that tests the blades after hitting a rock. You mentioned that this is a likley scenario and from experience this is almost a guaranteed in my case. It would prove if you are correct about the hybrid being able to continue for longer then the competition. Cheers!
brush blades should only be run on trimmers with solid drive shafts and handlebar type grips for 2 hand operation. not the speedo cable kind, unless you like replacing them all the time. guess that's why they make dedicated brush cutters
The bicycle handle trimmers come with a full harness, not just a strap, which you clip the trimmer to. It makes it difficult to bring the trimmer blade close to your feet. This setup is extremely effective when cutting on a slope and your feet slip out from under you. Also makes it safer in tall weeds when you cant see your blade.
This video is the perfect advertisement for a combi unit. I have the Husqvarna 535LK pro combi and I can switch heads in seconds and it can deal with almost anything, fantastic machine!!!!
Awesome man, love your videos and all the time and dedication you put into them to bring us useful information. You probably dont hear it enough but thank you, keep up the good work and awesome content 🤘
I recently moved to a home with 5 acres in California's Sierra Nevada foothills. I've got a lot of small trees and brush to manage. Once again, Project Farm comes through with great info!
Grass gator has a metal bladed option. DO NOT BUY IT. My dad used it and it lasted 5 minutes before the locking mechanism failed and it launched a blade straight through the garage wall!
I'm not a huge fan of needlessly cutting down trees, but your explanation and detail were good as always! Your channel is great, even for entertainment.
Loved this video, my grand father had a weed eater rigged up with thin chain and the chain last for ever... just curious if it be possible to do a video with different types of materials with like thin chain, or bailing wire, coat hanger wire or like thin rope? Or some other ideas instead of weed eater string
I have found and purchased a surplus WW11 FLAME Thrower that beats all trimmers hands down! My neighbors and the local fire fighters frown on me using it I don't care!
I use the brush destructor. $155 from Anton in Australia. I have 5 of them and they take over when the string is not enough. They have replaceable flail blades and can trim trees!
I’ve used the heck out the ATIE 80 carbide tooth brush cutters from PoolSupplyTown on Amazon. They sell it as a two pack for 21.95. I have cut a trail through boysenberry and willow trees that I can see from Google Earth!!!
Rob Geach I did an annual trail clearing with It. Typically it took just me two days. Most of the work was dragging the cuttings out of the way. Other times Eight guys were chopping at for a weekend. Last year the crew showed up and were shocked. The path was twice as wide as before and couldn’t believe one guy did it. I work better if people aren’t in the way of the cutter and didn’t tell them I’d do it. They went on to other projects and more cold beer time.
This is a very practical test. I've been given strimmers of various types to use over the years. Mostly not with great success. This test shows you have to use the right tool for the job. Thanks.
I would love to see a comparison of undercoatings and how they protect metal specifically from mag salt, which has recently started being sprayed on roads in my area and I'm told is far worse than regular salt for corrosion, as well as regular road salt and vibration. On another note, I don't usually comment on stuff, but your videos are a beacon of light in a sea of bias-ridden affiliated nonsense, I usually read articles about products, but google is no longer reliable since dedicated biased affiliate sites buy their "review sites" up to the top recommending their own products. I really feel like it's you, Consumer Reports, and AvE I can trust, and every other source is heavily dependent on the reviewer.
Undercoating as in like truck bed liner, raptor liner or a rubberized undercoating? Unfortunately anything that is sprayed on is not a very good rust preventer. It causes moister or water to sit inside and rot the frame or body from the inside out.
I bought the brush cutter attachment from Lowes, put it on my cub cadet 4125 4 stroke. Tried the tri blade it comes with but it is no match to a circular saw blade. I bought a 7 1/4 circular saw blade for $5 and used it for at least 8 hours. Found a 3 pack on sale so I switched it out. Was missing 4 teeth but still worked great. Using them to cut down honeysuckle bushes and whatever else (4 inch thick trees) and I'm cutting the stumps at ground level. The brush cutter attachment has a metal guard which is safer and helps position things during cutting. I might buy one of the 8 inch blades on amazon just to try it out but basic circular saw blades work amazingly well.
Great point on the circular saw blade. I really enjoy using the 9 inch renegade hybrid. It's a wide enough blade that I can take down a 4-5 inch tree and removes saplings a second. I've cleared thousands of them along a 1/2 mile stretch of fence line on the farm over the past month. It has saved me a tremendous amount of time and money.
I own a lawn company and need products like this I use the hybrid from renegade but my wife went out to buy stuff and knew I needed another blade and comes back with the grass gator I looked at it looked at her laughed and said the sales guy got you to buy that right YES!! She replied so advice either buy it yourself or show whoever is going to get it what you want
Awesome video. The issue of not moving grass out of the way could be easily solved on the blades with holes, if the hole were made at a 45 degree angle to force air through the blade.
You'd lose a lot of power that way. It could be done and it would probably work well for dispersing the clippings but I'm not sure whether or not it would be worth the extra fuel.
God I do not trust any of these except the three-blade one. They all seem pretty suicidal, especially that gator thing... If you can't cut it with the tri-blade, you get a chainsaw or something else but I would not consider these things an option, especially if you can't use the guard with it. I'd like to keep my legs, they've grown on me over the years.
Jose Morua i get my machete nice n sharpe and i can cut brush thats 3 fingers wide if i use both hands. easy maintenance and for a low income family it's perfect because i dont need gas.
I work for my county's Public Works Department. We routinely use Stihl weed trimmers with blades on the end. They are great at trimming everything, especially blackberry bushes. If you're surprised by this, don't be.
Just ordered a 2 pack of the renegade hybrid blades. I’ve been using the stihl blades which work ok, but they aren’t carbide tipped and dull fast. If I’m clearing grass I’ll just use the string, or if it’s that thick the brush hog. I need a blade for brush and small trees more than anything and I think these will fit the ticket. Thanks for the quality content as always!
I've tried them all. Finally bought 80 teeth carbide blades from Amazon, think they were called ATC from PoolSupply for $23 for two. They have been used hard and held up well. They zip through small trees and work well in tall grass, especially if you cut low to the ground, they just sing along. And the grass doesn't seem to catch and wind up around the head. That alone saves me so much time. I use them for cleaning under fence lines in tall bahia grass.
I use the Stihl hedge trimmer attachment and adjust the angle parallel to the ground line. It cuts anything that fits between the tines and is easy to sharpen with a round file.
I use an old worn out circular saw blade on my trimmer to cut down brush up to about 1 1/2" thick, I drilled a hole in it for the 1" arbor size needed for my trimmer, it works like a dream. Even with many of the carbide tips missing it still cuts great after many hours of use. No need to waste money on new blades the old used ones work fine. If your cutting grass use the string nothing works better. If you are cutting brush use the circular saw blade. Remember use the right tool for the job.
I have a stihl version of the grass gator. It's well-built, but like the grass gator, it doesn't eject the grass very well. It does a lof better if you cut it in layers as mentioned, and tilting it helps, too. Years ago, a friend of mine used one that was similar to a grass gator, but had short lengths of CHAIN SAW CHAIN instead of the plastic blades!! Whoever made it was OUT OF THEIR MIND!!!!
@@ProjectFarmthe stihl is better built, but still not good for much more than patches of grass you can't get your mower to. Anything bigger than 3/16" chews it up
Another great demonstration! I love my new Stihl kombi 131. So far I can tell trimmer line Is still king for grass and light weeds because of a larger cutting swath. The 4 tooth grass blade that came with my brush cutter attachment is cool but I know it will be a lot more useful for me when I put on a saw blade and hog down some branches with it.
I watched this video sometime ago. I came back across this video because I’m trying to tame a forest of bamboo in my new backyard. Not really sure who’s bright idea it was to plant it. Geez that stuff will take over everything. Anyway this video very much helped me make a decision.
Cool video, Me personally, I like just string for grass, String & blade for grass & brush, Stihl's 8" Scratcher tooth saw for doing the smaller brush & Dewalt's Construction grade 12" Miter saw Blades for doing heavy brush & large areas of thick weeds, I prefer an 80 tooth or more.
I have used a regular 7.5 inch saw blade with as few teeth as possible, this makes it easier to get it out the side of a tree when it gets stuck, it will get stuck. My brush clearing machine is the Stihl 110, for the grass I use .105 line, no guard with the FS 130 bicycle handle, I main machine and love is the Stihl FS 250 , bicycle handle with .130 Oregon line. I live in the USVI. we have rocks and brush everywhere. the .130 line allow me to cut without even slowing down and run through Guinea grass up to 6 feet tall without problem.
When I want to cut off a large tree stump very close to the ground, I use a Sawzall with a 12" thin kerf blade that bends very easily so that you can hold the Sawzall at a 45-degree angle to the ground and keep the blade absolutely flat and parallel to the ground. I have cut several 25" diameter tree stumps even with the ground.
Wow! I've decided it's time to upgrade from my lightweight Ryobi 18v and similar-powered plug in trimmer... I'm always trying to cut brush and end up going through string like crazy, so frustrating. I did find some string with a metal core which is FAR superior to the cheap plastic string I bought a spool of. Was dumb & didn't realize string thickness matters a lot. Those blades in the video are awesome, except for the gator which I agree looks worthless. I had the 40v Ryobi trimmer which was attachment capable but mine literally went up in smoke within a month or so; motor somehow started burning out. I looked online and apparently this was a semi-common problem and returned it but that's crazy how fast you can cut brush with those saw blade, great video as usual!

Thank you very much!
I love how he's not biased too
I hadn't used my weedwacker with its original blade for years.
Glad to hear!
KL
You're very innovative! These blades get the job done quickly!
I cant believe I just watched someone weedeat a tree down .... incredible Haha!
There is a tool for that....its called a chainsaw!

I recommend wearing a pair of chainsaw chaps when using a blade I got a peice of wire in my leg one time
Great suggestion! Thank you
I'd second that, I haven't used any saw blades on a trimmer, but I've had some grass trimmer kick up and cut my leg pretty deep. Pants and chaps seem like a good idea.
@@ProjectFarm skin will heal, pants don't, besides good fun making the metal detectors bleep.

Thanks for sharing.
Todd,
The trimmer you were using was a stihl 4 mix to low of rpm for the triangular blade.
I would sharpen up that craftop and use it like a giant throwing star. Would make a great outtro!
lol. I missed a great outtro opportunity!
With chicken breasts and catchup mixed with corn syrup?
Don't tempt him, this is the gimmick free Channel, and we like it that way!
The Slingshot Channel did it.
Thanks for sharing.
I'll test your idea very soon! It's coming. Great video idea!

Awe hell ya that’s a great idea lol
I know your joking, but since in the US it's prefectly legal to own a flamethrower, and many people use them for brush removal, weed killing, and pest controll, there's probably a flamer attachment for a weed trimmer out there somewhere.

Wow! I was surprised at how quickly I destroyed the grass gator.
I had one break as well. Cutting normal grass and it exploded into my legs. Thankfully, I wear tall boots
If i use the normal string head im fine but if i use triple metal blade or cutting blade there is always the fear in my head that the blade breaks of and hits me. I dont really know why that is and if it could happen.

"Alright, so we're gonna try this out on some light brush..." *cuts down a tree*
Thanks for watching.
After I looked at my upcoming project, that tree is light brush. I had two areas to clear, in two different states, and both of them seem like they came out of the jungle. Luckily both are fairly small but too big to do by hand.
For clearing brush I use a lawn chair, matches, gasoline and a beer.
Great point and thank you!
As always another good video, my dad said they used to use 6 inch bicycle chains back in the 70's for clearing brush on the farm because they were always running into buried farm equipment parts etc. That couldn't be seen. Keep em coming.

Thanks for the feedback.
A great follow-up would be a video that tests the blades after hitting a rock. You mentioned that this is a likley scenario and from experience this is almost a guaranteed in my case. It would prove if you are correct about the hybrid being able to continue for longer then the competition. Cheers!
Great recommendation! Thank you
brush blades should only be run on trimmers with solid drive shafts and handlebar type grips for 2 hand operation. not the speedo cable kind, unless you like replacing them all the time. guess that's why they make dedicated brush cutters
Great point. Thanks
Cape Cod CNC my echo srm225 came with a flex cable and it does fine with a blade
@@re49991 depends on how you use it and the blade you're using like anything else
Never had to replace a flex shaft when using brush cutter blades (many) on my trimmer. my experience says the above statement is incorrect.

I did an annual trail clearing with It.

Thank you for the video idea and thanks for the positive comment!
Undercoating as in like truck bed liner, raptor liner or a rubberized undercoating? Unfortunately anything that is sprayed on is not a very good rust preventer. It causes moister or water to sit inside and rot the frame or body from the inside out.
I just watch this guy cut trees with a weed eater....
Lol

That Forester looks dangerous if it happens to loose a tooth while you're cutting brush. That's probably why the mfr doesn't recommend?
Great point. Thank you
Very interesting video! Would attaching radial fan blades to the top of the circular blades improve their dispersing capability?
Thank you! I'm not sure if it'd help but that's a very interesting idea
Maybe. But then they wouldn‘t cut larger brush anymore. And that s kinda the point.
I would think that would catch alot of grass and bind up the saw
You'd lose a lot of power that way. It could be done and it would probably work well for dispersing the clippings but I'm not sure whether or not it would be worth the extra fuel.

Thanks for the info.
Thank you for the suggestion!

Nice!
👏👏👏 Fascinating. Very satisfying to watch & listen to that Renegade blade zipping through the tree.
I have a stihl version of the grass gator. It's well-built, but like the grass gator, it doesn't eject the grass very well. It does a lof better if you cut it in layers as mentioned, and tilting it helps, too.

I have used a regular 7.5 inch saw blade with as few teeth as possible, this makes it easier to get it out the side of a tree when it gets stuck, it will get stuck. When I want to cut off a large tree stump very close to the ground, I use a Sawzall with a 12" thin kerf blade that bends very easily so that you can hold the Sawzall at a 45-degree angle to the ground and keep the blade absolutely flat and parallel to the ground.
