  • Meat pies should be as American as apple pie. Professional carnivore Nick Solares grew up eating meat pies in the UK and has often wondered why they aren’t more popular in the US. He visits chef Angie Mar of the Beatrice Inn who is one of the few chefs serving them in NYC to eat and talk more about why this dish would be absent stateside.

    As a Brit living in Canada and a frequent visitor to the US, I have often wondered why the meat pie culture did not catch on in North America. On my travels around the world I've eaten delicious meat pies in South Africa and Australia, both former British colonies. I've been making my own Pork Pies from scratch for a few years now to make up for the lack of pies locally, my Brit friends love them.

      "Meat Pies" was capitalized because it was intended to be part of the title. "Hamburger" was capitalized for dramatic and emphatic purposes. Maybe I should have quoted both instances, but these overlooks are not as cancerous, erroneous, and childish as confusing "your" and "you're". Thanks for your attention.

    While chicken pot pie is the most common meat pie in the USA (Swanson sells a lot of frozen pot pies, most of them chicken), I remember eating Swanson beef pot pies as well when I was younger. It's been several years since I had a Swanson frozen pot pie of any kind, but I'm totally open to eating meat pies made with beef, pork, lamb, venison, bison, etc. I'm also surprised that they're not as popular in the US as they are in the UK and Australia. I would think they would be, especially since chicken pot pie is still so popular that KFC has it on their menu (and they do a really good one, too). Also, pie-like handheld treats like Hot Pockets have various kinds of meat in them, so why not make a more traditional pie using items like ham & cheese and pepperoni & sausage with mozzarella & pizza sauce in a pie? I think those could be very popular if they're made right.

    • @davidhoffman5789
      @davidhoffman5789 8 лет назад +2

      TINY_TIGERS, Real chefs are going to want to make it from scratch, not from premade frozen. The need for consistent crust quality would probably deter many chefs from doing that. I have seen more than a few chefs talk about how the bakery part of the job can be the most frustrating and time consuming. They just avoid anything that would involve the need for excellent crusts. If you have a large enough restaurant then maybe you hire a bakery expert to deal with those items. Some chefs have the admirable attitude that if they cannot prepare an item properly then they are not going to have it on the menu.

    • @areujokingme
      @areujokingme 8 лет назад +5

      +David Hoffman Dude, you don't know wtf you're talking about. I work at a restaurant, pie crusts are NOT difficult at all, there is NO need whatsoever for a "bakery expert" to make a perfectly delicious and viable pie crust. The question this video is asking is, "Why aren't these more popular?" not, "Why can't americans figure out how to make these?"

  • @WaltzingAustralia
    @WaltzingAustralia 8 лет назад +4

    Two thoughts: First, interesting comment about great chips in England fried in beef fat. McDonald's used to do that, until vegetarians complained. Never been as good since. Second, while pies I've had in England are not as intense as the ones in the video, they are closer to that than they are to Australian meat pies (which I also love). How did Aussie pies end up so different from British ones. (But at least they did hang on to meat pies.)

    My first exposure to meat pie as a couple decades ago at a ren faire, in the form of small Scottish style hand pies. As an American carnivore, I too wonder why this hasn't become a thing in my country. I do make my own meat pies, usually a bacon-cheeseburger affair, and much larger than what got me started with full-sized 9 and 10 inch pies. I'm a little lazy, though, and don't make my own pie crusts; instead relying on store-bought pie crust dough... but I'm no chef, I just want to get to the eating.

      Chili is cooked with ground beef. Americans love ground beef. We don't care for offal parts at all though, which many pies are made out of. Honestly meat pie just doesn't sound appetizing to me at all. I like steak.

    • @TheNovaGoose
      @TheNovaGoose 6 лет назад +2

      Not all chili is cooked with ground beef, by the way. Often times cubed up bits of roast or steak, or sometimes pork, is used instead of ground beef. Those chilis are more for serving on its own as a meal, with ground beef is better as like a topping as seen in chili cheese fries or chili dogs.

      @@dolphinboi-playmonsterranc9668 Commercial "game" is really just agriculturally grown animals that are not pigs, cows, or chickens. The ducks and venison that you eat in restaurants are never wild-caught- that's actually illegal for most terrestrial wild animals- so basically any farmed animal that's a little bit on the fringe of our palates is considered "game". This is why many (including myself) hunt, ya get to eat ethically harvested, free-range animals that have had natural and quality lives for basically free lol

      +FMHammyJ actually it can almost be the opposite different cuts have different ideal cooking times, hence why cheapeer cuts were used due to high fat content giving flavour and the cook time allowed the tough meat to become soft and tender, high end cus dont need this, the marbelling and structure of muscle allows shorter cooking times for optimum flavour, cooking for too long can ruin these cuts

    Ways to make it Americanised/Americanized:
    1. Put heaps of butter.
    2. Put bacon.
    3. Deep fry it.
    4. Put American cheese.
    5. Apply whip cream.
    6. Apply chocolate syrup.
    7. Drizzle it with 'ketchup/tomato sauce'
    8. More bacon.

      +Xilen7, I can see the dishes being popular in Texas or places where they do BBQ without sweet sauces. Ossobuco is popular in many places, so the bone in aspect is not an automatic veto. The long preparation time is what might be a turn off. Also many cooks have a difficult time getting crusts to consistently come out correctly. The butter aspect may be true depending on what the cook has learned about making crusts. Bacon is dying out as a trendy food additive.

    • @ilynnad
      @ilynnad 7 лет назад +3

      Man I visited Aussie a couple of years ago. I was pumped as usual to try the food there. I thought I'd be eating roo, and koalas and snakes and shit like that. So one of the first things I asked the locals was "Whats the most Australian dish there is? Poutine is to Canada as what is to Australia?" The reply? "Umm...nothing in particular, maybe a meat pie." I was bummed to hear that. You did have some solid meat pies though and even better beaches. After a few months there though, I can safely say Vegemite is the unofficial Australian food product, and I hate it lol. Tim-tams are a close second and are actually amazing though.

    • @Mav_F
      @Mav_F 7 лет назад +2

      Danny L - by the way, Egyptians and Romans invented pies many centuries ago.
      You have to remember, Australia isnt that old and has an English background, so there isnt going to be anything really Australian Food. Plus, with so much different cultures here, most foods people wont know what is Australian anymore. Plus so many things to choose from. I am not from an Australian background myself, am born and bred here and love this Country so much. Anyhow, here is a list of Foods that Australians have invented or perfected:
      * Vegemite - the reason you didnt like it because you probably didnt do it right. So Aussies think its super funny, by putting too much on and watching tourists face go funny.
      * Pavlova
      * Weet-Bix
      * Sausage Sangers
      * BBQ techniques and what to cook on them, eventually Italians here placed even more on BBQs and now most things, doesnt matter what can be cooked on BBQs here.
      *Lamingtons
      *Anzac Biscuits
      * Neenish Tarts
      * Splices
      * Golden Gaytime
      * Chicko Roll
      * Tim Tams
      * Damper
      * Burger with the lot
      * Fish and Chips - perfected
      * Meat Pies - perfected
      * Dagwood Dogs
      * Chicken Parmigiana
      * Pie Floater
      * Frog Cakes
      * Fruit Chocs
      and many more.....
      You can buy products here, that has Kangaroo, Emu etc in but because its so expensive to buy, some places dont sell it. You can buy Kangaroo meat here and there and some restaurants have it on their menu, but if its not cooked right, people tend not to like it. To me, it only has the flavours you give it, but a very very health meat to eat.
      I guess thats it for now... take care...
      PS. Cant eat Koala, that is so not right, plus they carry a virus, not good.
