As an American I just can’t understand why these pies aren’t a thing over here. A week after returning from Australia, I was attempting to make them myself, I missed those delicious meat pies so much!
@@whokilledjr3719 few years ago I was showing a kiwi truck driver the run i was doing and I bought him a shepherds pie from a bakery in Melbourne on the way back he made me stop again and he bought another 3 could not believe how nice they tasted he said makes the new Zealand ones taste like sh!t 😂😂
I’ve gotta say, after visiting NZ last year, I think they do pies better than us.. I was in pie heaven. Venison and rabbit pies were super common and just amazing. Coming back home, good pie shops are few and far between
I wouldn't go that far. Yes, they do some vvery good pies (especially steak & cheese) but I also had some very poor ones there. I would say they are very good in both countries but it's easier to find a good pie in Oz than in the Shaky Isles.
Coming from New Zealand and living here for 15 years, initially I would have said that this was a trick question. But if you want really good Aussie pies that are on par with the good ones at home, go hunting for bakeries in rural towns in Vic, you won't be disappointed.
We are Aussie homeschoolers and I've made "The great Australian Pie Hunt" part of our curriculum - we always have one or two big educational travels each year, and we sample pies along the way. They get rated for their pastry, meat, gravy, and overall taste for a total of 20 points.
Bayside Bakery in Glenelg South Australia should be a place you visit on your travels. I rate them 20 out of 20 for real delicious ingredients unlike horrible meat less pies from supermarkets 22% of meat ingredients that are offal, tongue and gristle = 🤮
Kens humble pie @ the entrance central coast nsw.. He hand makes proffiter rolls aswell they are the best ive ever eaten like a velvet tasting custard/cream. I recommend The lamb and veg and the Guinness beef.
If you have a Morrisons supermarket nearby they do pretty gpod chunky steak, steak & ale and chicken pies, even if they use shortcrust instead of puff pastry for the "lids".
To be honest most of the best bakery pies in aus are found in Vietnamese bakeries from my experience and often about $2.50-$3.50 where the ‘gourmet’ pies that cost from $5-$10 are normally the ones you would pass on.
I remember a bread shop in Japan it was called Saint Germain and their meat pies with a little curry flavor were the most delicious I’ve ever tasted honestly in the world as you know Japanese are perfectionists they do a real good job
its time to have a kiwi ozzy bake off to see if us kiwis make the best pie don't I know we will never be able to cook kangaroo or crocodile pie maybe we might cook a kiwi pie
I do but that's my own opinion Since i can't eat bakery or frozen pies anymore thanks to high levels of purine from offal and meat extender they put in. That reacts to my gout
I was spoilt with some great pies in my home town and nearby... Clarke's pies in Mortlake were a favourite and Chitticks from Warrnambool. But I used to love the ones made in independent bakeries in Warrnambool. Some of which have now closed down.
I had my first one in a little aussie cafe in rhode island. It was a regular stop for a road trip or hike, for me it has an association of the start of a great adventure! Hope you find it as good as we did
Has anyone done an investigation into supermarket pies 🥧 that contain 22% of meat products which include offal, gristle tongue etc as their main ingredients. I am very lucky that I have a small bakery that has amazing pies with real meat in their pies !!! Real beef pieces, kidney amazing potato pie. Ned Kelly pie, and many other delicious products. Their pies are completely full of real ingredients not processed ingredients that claim to be meat. People can do themselves a favour and actually read the ingredients on the packaging of the 🥧 🥧 sold in supermarkets I am pretty sure they would never buy another pie from them. My advice is find a small bakery that makes their products fresh on-site.
I like Mrs Mac’s beef pies because they are just one type of meat, beef, not beef, & something else. All meat pies in Australia, by law, must have 25%, or more meat. If in doubt, check choice magazine’s beef pies review, & see the content of some of them.
We are no longer the BBQ nation or the best makers of pies in the world. Why? Because we are not driven like the other countries. We are lazy and really only look at how much money we can make. Wow, that's a great pie. Let's charge more for it!! This unfortunately, is the Aussie way!! React to this and tell me I'm wrong!!
I guess you didnt listen to what they said. It goes back to the Roman and Egyptian days. Australia invented the handheld pies and heaps of flavours and better pastry and fillings than the plain boring British ones.
That bloke eating that pie with a paddle pop stick, is the most un-Australian thing I have ever seen in my life.
As an American I just can’t understand why these pies aren’t a thing over here. A week after returning from Australia, I was attempting to make them myself, I missed those delicious meat pies so much!
I bought some from HEB in Texas but they are much more expensive than in Australia.
because you're not an anglo country obviously
the english left america a quater of a millennium ago
As an Indonesian, aussie beef pies and sausage rolls are so underrated. I think with the right PR it can easily be a popular street food in Asia.
Nz pies are so much better

I’m Canadian, would love to try an Aussie pie!
I'm Australian and I would like to try Canadian poutine

There should be an international version. 🇨🇦 vs 🇦🇺 vs 🇳🇿.
Any samples ?
Also called 'Maggot Bags."

I grew up eating pies. Miss the 90s
Nah, NZ will school the Aussies on how to make a good pie! 😂

I'm 66 years old and have never had a meat pie. I guess I better find some.
Ok Boomer

How appropriate that a Vietnamese bakery won? Good on ya, guys!
YES!
nothing beats a National pie, the texture is perfect. Bakery pies are too crusty and you can't eat them with your hands.
I wish I could enter this competition.
Ive had pies all over Australia, including far away rural areas. Best pie believe it or not is a lamb pie in Bondi Junction
Shoutout to Beefy's in southern Queensland. I love their pies.
Every reference to the pie is spot on except for The Rat Coffin never gets a mention
Great show thanks 👍 Les from Perth 🎉🎉🎉
Macbeth Act 1 scene 1 : Witches at the cauldron : The grubbier the meat, the better the pie.
Just as pate en croute is to the Cuisses de Grenouille, so, meat pies are to Les Kangourous!
Have a look at wallerawang bakery, nsw
Love me pies and history
bemboka pie shop nsw if you haven't tryed them you don't kown what you are missing.....
This is a bloody disgrace. Everyone knows Garlo’s Pies are the best. They’re a bloody national treasure!
Tramcar meat pies in Gympie QLD.

I miss eating meat pie
We have a bakery a km from my house and after work my dad always buys pie and I always thought he will never come back buying milk
5 million kiwis eat 70 million pies a year
Damn right we do
I eat one million of those I'm sure of it
Hungry?
3 hours thank god for burritos
Not a fan of pie pan pies. My preference as that the bottom should be flaky like the top :)
Vilis uses puff pastry on top and bottom
nz pies >
Miss pies…in 🇩🇪 no chicken, steak pies what so ever..no pies for me🥲
New Zealand pies are better.
100% meat of unknown origins.

Last I saw meat pies in Woolworths have 22% of meat which is tongue, gristle and offal 🤮
