Awesome ideas! I CADed a set of mattracks up once but that was as far as I got. was thinking about how could they be made cheaper than 15k per set lol. thought about snowmobile tracks and then thought hey what about used tires , same way you did them. nice! I also at one point was trying to figure out how to build a planetary gear set inside the hub to correct the natural gear reduction that the system creates, so that the tracks could be spun faster and get more speed. Nice to see someone actually build there own set !!

That is awesome. I bought plans of your other tracks. I haven’t started building yet. Still thinking about best design, weight reduction, etc. I think that using best ideas of your both designs would create the ultimate diy tracks.
I would liie to try out making the frames of the tracks from aluminium instead. Or greatly reduce the wall thickness of he steel frame down from 3 mm to 2 or 1.5 mm.

Come to think of it, you could make heavier duty tracks by using two layers of tire carcasses, ends staggered. That should also improve ride quality, assuming it's used on a vehicle that can handle the increased weight.

Nicely done! I have access to all I need short of the lathe. I'm building a custom R/C Paintball tank and of course that includes the custom tracks and drive system. And it all started with a hover-around. LOL Good job man!

Ariens or Simplicity sells tracks kits for their walk behind snow blowers but they are $500 per set of two. They would be smaller than your tracks and probably not made for anything over 5 mph.
Boyd W I've seen them and I too think so, but you're not actually speeding while using snowblower anyways. :P

WOW thats nice Ive been thinking about building those for my tractor.
Yes, me too. But I've been thinking it's rather hard to work out the gear ratio between the front and rear wheels because they are in different diameter. Thus it's harder to make tracks work together as a unit due to the sprocket teeth pitch.
Great job! Would really need a set of tracks for my L200 where I live. I'm researching my ass off to find something cheaper because the prices they ask are just absurd for the parts. And you just proved it ;)

Looks like you did a great job ! I've been a certified welder fabricator for Cat over 24 years and would love to tackle this cause they don't make them for My old 2001 Polaris 325 trail Boss 2WD Quad . How well does it work without having a front drive ? I was thinking you could get a sand type tire with a ridge in the center . Just a thought . Could you upload a video of you running in snow of all types some deep powder . Thanks Ken
That's cool. Thinking about doing it myself. I have access to the equipment needed, I just needed some ideas for the tracks. Anything you would change to improve it now that you've done it once? How is the angle iron holding up?
With this kind of track I think it would be better if the bogey wheels have a linkage system that makes the ride on hard surface such as asphalt, concrete or gravel more smoother. But I don't see myself using the tracks all year long and have no need for them in the summer. The version that I have now covers my needs.

Sorry for my silly look, it was a moment. Great job on the tracks, very impressed. Especially love your shop, has a great vintage patina that looks like it's seen some serious projects over the years. Say, did you make your own drive sprockets as well? I'm looking to make one for my Honda CT110 street/trail bike. Since it has high/low range I think it will push one at a modest pace. Did you have rubber lugs on the one you built for your bike?
Thanks for the comment! I made the first sprockets out of plywood but due to the possibility to order them machined I went that way. The track lugs on the mattrack on the bike were also made from plywood. Maybe the 110ccm engine is too weak for all that friction in the snow but it's worth a try. Good luck with Your own project!

She's such a treasure. My son Jeremy and his wife broke up. He hasn't been doing much in truth for some time. Since went to elders got back on track and went to assembly, says he's going to start again, he works for Jodie Butt and his wife. Anyway hope we can connect again in the future. Hey! If I'm honest I don't know the type of the plastic, I just know it's plastic. ;) I let a friend who works in a plastic company cut the wheels and sprockets out of scrap plastic. It was cheaper that way. These trike tracks were a prototype for my business plan. I have more recent tracks made for ATV. What type of plastic were the wheels and gears machined from?
Ezio Speed Some types of industrial plastic. Had a bunch of different leftovers cut to the shapes I needed.
Just one question: The sprocket meshing with the spacing of the cleats. Did you make the track first, creating whatever even spacing worked out for the length of the tire/belt and then work out the pitch of the sprocket? (maybe I just worked out my own solution just by writing it down).
Sort of, yes. But I did not consider the tire length, I just thought of a more or less good spacing for the track pattern and patched two tires together. I did not have a long enough tire anyway. And eventually made a drawing of the sprocket in computer program and let them CNC'd.

How much did materials end up costing you? And how did you join the rubber back together?
The materials (CNC parts, tubing, bearings & hardware) cost way way less than a mattracks kit you can buy on the market. The rubber is overlapping and is joined back together with bolts.
Not criticizing your work, it is good for sure, but why did you build the tacks out of car tires rather than using a pair of snowmobile tracks?
im1469 It's the freedom of choice - I got to choose my own sprocket pitch. Otherwise I would have been stuck with snowmobile track little windows. And tires were cheaper (read: free) also! :D

Otavio Araujo' Thank You! I used rectangular tubing, car tyre protectors, plastic wheels and sprockets, bolts and nuts and a few cutting disks for angle grinder. The cross-sections of the rectangular steel You have to figure out yourself according to the vehicle that You plan to use them on. I used 40x40x3mm for the legs and 60x40x3mm for the base.

They looked to be an off the shelf, rubber drive unit, but I guess not. What material did you make them from and how is it holding up.
***** I'd have to say that I do not know the excact code of the plastic. ;) It is holding up very good despite my lack of knowledge about the material. I took the tracks out mudding in the autumn and no wear whatsoever even then.

How did you splice the tires or did you just find ones that were long enough.
autotruckrv I used angle grinder with a cutting disc to cut the tire protectors to the right size in length. I used a carpet knife to remove the sidewalls though.
Excellent, but may I ask? How do you connect/join the ends of the tire thread to form endless track (close the circle)?
Freyja Njarðardóttir The ends are just overlapping and are attached with bolts. It is a simple solution and it works!

Freyja Njarðardóttir The tire protector material is something like 8 to 10 mm thick so there is not so big step in the track eventually as someone may think. I had a lot of criticism over the bolt joint while writing about my project in local forums but it proved to be a working solution and that's all it has to be. ;)

Yes I can believe that, but when you think of it, in the factory that produced rubber tracks, then this product is much more simpler that producing a tyre that needs to be very exact in tolerances and will also have be rather easy to balance when rotating not to mention to have the resulting tyre become almost perfect circle and not a cube or octagon :)
Also when you think of it, perhaps it is not so complicated to home brew a custom made track, handling it from raw rubber and then bake it appropriate owen. But still your solution is genius.

Very nice job, I have started my own version of this for my home made ski tow, this should make it easier to get it to more remote locations.
Could you share with me the specs for the nylon drive cog to get it to mess to the tracks.

TheVentrin123 It's just basic math. You have to know what the pitch of the track is/will be. Then you have to know how many teeth you want to have on your sprocket/drive cog. Then you multiply the pitch by the number of teeth and get the circumference of the sprocket (measured from the bottom of the teeth) and voila. I had 90mm pitch on the track and drew/sketched a sprocket according to that.

Hi Donn, what size of engine is your bike? I am planning on running a single track powered from a 110cc pit bike that I use as a ski tow just now and will be implementing the two together. I am hoping it will have the power to pull me on the ski,s easily.

Alec Enderli You can get the tubing from Your local metal shop. The plastic wheels and sprockets were specially made in a company that machines and processes plastic. And the hardware is from a hardware store. ;) Thanks!

Alin Radu Some sort of industrial plastic. Bought it from a local plastic processing company and let them CNC the wheels from a 20 mm sheet.
About how much did you spend? I have a two wheel drive truck, farm/swamp land, and an engineering degree. I would very much like to make a set of tracks for my truck
+Dalton Perry Not much but I don't remember the exact number anymore. You should give it a go, it's easier for you having the engineering degree.

Amazing job! I was looking at the blueprints you've provided but couldn't figure out what angle you are using at the front and rear of the lower frame? Also am I correct in assuming you did not provide provisions for the strut / torsion bar like you did in the ATV build? Thanks for sharing!
When you have cut the pieces according to the measurements and put them together you'll get the angle. Since I didn't need torsion bars on the trike I didn't produce drawings for them either.

im having a hard time finding plastic for the guide wheels and drive sprocket, i have some that comes out of the mines and power plants but i don't have nearly enough, where did you find yours at?
I could use steel but that would get to be so ungodly heavy, its going to go onto my 450 dirt bike when im done.
I bought it from a friend who worked at a plastic processing company. You can search for companies that are processing plastics and order it from there.

why not just buy a set of old tracks from a mini excavator or bobcat
Cause those cost arm and a leg least here. Least 1K for pair and using old tire you get them in different sizes for free. Wheels and hubs etc you can make even with minimal tools. Welder, angle grinder and maybe old miter saw where you can trow angle grinder cutting wheel is pretty much enough to get accurate enough parts.

I used these on a trike. The steering system was the front wheel.

Joey Heider These sprockets were CNC-d from 20 mm and plastic and bolted together so they formed a 40 mm thick sprocket.

***** if you're going to add suspensions to the small tiers would you go for motorcycles suspensions? since they are smallest and cheapest or its possible to add other kind of suspensions.
