Wow this sound like a collosal waste of time. You weren't intimate with him at all and didn't like him romantically, so why bother reconnecting and then telling him again you didn't like him romantically. Waste of his time and yours. Time to grow up and form a new relationship with a person for more than a few dates. If there's a red flag with you that is making more than a few dates not possible you should focus your energy on fixing it. Once you've fixed that you may meet the love of your life and you won't think about a guy you weren't even intimate with five years ago.

one day a couple months ago, someone else from my past messaged me saying she still thought of me and my family, though she wasn't even sure if I'd remember her. I'm at a point in my life where I'm hesitant - even embarrassed - to reach out to people I miss, but that message inspired me to reach out to him, my ex, because I'd been thinking about him.
we hadn't spoken in over 5 years. I wasn't sure if he'd respond or even see my message, but he did, and was pleasantly surprised to receive it. we caught up a little bit, and he even candidly asked what I thought about our relationship. I told him that it felt more like a friendship but that I did have feelings for him (when we were dating), and he said he felt like he could have put more effort in.
we've spoken off and on since then, although I'm really bad at texting back and I don't like phone calls. we talked about meeting up in person, but the plans fell through, and I was kind of relieved that they did because I was nervous that it would be really weird. but I feel like in the right setting, we'd have a really nice and mature conversation.
Wow this sound like a collosal waste of time. You weren't intimate with him at all and didn't like him romantically, so why bother reconnecting and then telling him again you didn't like him romantically. Waste of his time and yours. Time to grow up and form a new relationship with a person for more than a few dates. If there's a red flag with you that is making more than a few dates not possible you should focus your energy on fixing it. Once you've fixed that you may meet the love of your life and you won't think about a guy you weren't even intimate with five years ago.

Would like to see a couple with over years of relationship that had dated in real life trying to get back together. No offense but only 4 months of dating wouldn't share as much of a bond as dating for multiple years.
