Didn't hear the album, but i'm srsly surprised this guy still exist. Just give him some beyonce i'm sure he's gonna rate her 10/10... Anyways try Andy Shauf - Norm i had some good time listening that album.. gl & hf 😉
It's so weird to me when people keep comparing an artist's work to their debut album. Now that we understand Fever Ray is a series of characters based on Karin's life, how shitty is it to wish Karin had stayed depressed and lonely just to keep the music darkly ethereal and beautiful? Art is about the artist, not about our personal preferences.
I'm so glad it's nothing like debut because I've listened to that one way too many times...the new album is NEW, like it gives me life. It's refreshing and ahead of it's time honestly.
Albums been on repeat for me. Their melodies, production and use of synths etc is just so unmatched. Every track is uniquely addictive with different elements. It's a strong 8/9 let's be real
The magic of Fever Ray, for me, is that nearly every time I hear a track for the first time I think....uhhhh.....yikes....and then I can't stop singing it in my head and playing it again and again. It's weird. I've never experienced that with any other artist's music. They are fantastically talented and ground breaking, and honest and refreshing, not to mention badass.
Gullgutten pushed the dislike button on this comment because it was a rather stoopid comment. Just thought you ought to know what happened and why you got the notification.
I haven't heard an album in a while where I immediately want to replay the song and replay it again and replay it again ... I find myself on the New Utensils track just clicking restart and turning the volume up. It's ridiculous and weird and I love it
I wasn’t sure about new utensils at first but it’s really been growing on me, it’s definitely repetitive but it’s just so tasty I love it. Idk how you could bash Kandy either I actually almost think it’s fever Rays best song yet
I liked New Utensils too actually, the sound is pretty catchy and varied. Kandy was a disappointment for me as it was repetitive and Karen's deep voice didn't fit well on it, and actually, it was her worst vocal performance on the album I think. None of the songs she released since Plunge are as good as her magnum opus, self-titled.
I would agree about Kandy in fact I think all the singles are fantastic and I love the album would rate it an 8.5. I just wish the closing track was better read people saying they love it and find it super hypnotic but for me it's just boring honestly.
I liked this sooo much better than Plunge, which I honestly didn't really connect to outside of a couple of tracks. I still think this can't match the mood and consistency of the debut, but tracks like Kandy, Carbon Dioxide, Shiver and Looking for a Ghost (just to name some) are all top tier Fever Ray. A great album overall!
Is it really weird that this is legit my favoritest album of the year 2023 thus far!? It's a magnificent return to form after the disappointing sophomore slump.....err...plunge over a half decade ago. (Looks like Anthony is cringing at my terrible pun there in the thumbnail)
Mine too as of May I think it is a fantastic album honestly. Wish the last track wasn't on there though it's just so boring for me and I do enjoy more ambient repetitive stuff. Coconut from the debut album was an amazing closing track.
Kandy is my favourite track now. I'm not a big Fever Ray fan in general. But Keep these streets empty for me, if i had a heart and Kandy are 3 of my all time favs. Kandy is addictive. I keep listening to it every day. Stunning.
The "we seduce, then we dance, then we contemplate" pacing of Radical Romantics is one of the star qualities for me that leaves me mulling over the feelings the rest of the album brought out of me. Bummer that Tapping Fingers and Bottom of the Ocean didn't evoke for you what it did for me, because it's been reproducably magical on subsequent listens for me. Always makes me sad to hear a good critic suggest improvement that I genuinely feel would reduce the impact and quality that struck me like lightning. Regardless, always appreciate melon's artistic engagement and analysis.
This album should be called Silent Shout part 2 (which is not a bad thing, tbh). I just keep on longing, in my heart of hearts, that Karin will release something as ethereal and colossal as their self-titled 2009 album again; something that makes you want to sway naked in a dark forest... but that ship has sailed, I guess.
@@surprisinglyroomy It got a 9. His videos from 2009 and before had to be deleted because they had audio snippets and stuff (before copyright ruined YT)
For me personally Tapping Fingers is one of the best tracks on the record. The lyrics are just really touching. It is slower in fact but in a good way. And despite the fact I also kind of dislike the closing track, Tapping Fingers itself is a nice way to transition to it.
I'm still learning about Knife & Fever Ray but shared the Even It Out video even though it promotes violence because WOWza....that perfect punk sound, the rage of the mama, the tinkling of relief....truly impressive. Their videos get a universal top award from me...♥🕳♥💖♥🙌♥💝♥💣♥
It's so crazy how when a subject matter is purely subjective, people often trick themselves into thinking that simply forming a complex opinion is the same as mastery over that subject. So they actually think they can then dictate to others what the experience will be like for them, even though they're mostly way off for an overwhelming majority of people. The gullible idiots then form a little circle, where they pontificate to each other about which Animal Collective album totally banged the hardest.
Echoing others somewhat, but there are some seriously interesting and sonically tasty sounds here, particularly Kandy. For me it’s been the closest to the off kilter feeling found in earlier works on Deep Cuts for example. The live show attached to this looks bizarre and confronting in addition.
I've only listened to a few songs and its tricky. The first album has such a strong place in my heart, each song on that album is a 10/10 and hits some deep emotional notes, especially since I've listened to it for 15 years now. As someone who's 30 and who fell in love with that album as a teenager I can recognize that Carbon Monoxide hits a lot of the same notes and rocks but it doesn't have the same emotional resonance as re-listening to even some of the shitty Seven remixes. At that point I don't know if I'm pessimistic about Radical Romances because her song writing has gotten a bit stale where she used to be so cutting-edge (honestly, has her writing changed since Silent Shout? Her formula is great but she produced a whole noise album, you'd hope that she figured out how to traverse even weirder pop noise waters by now but instead its like she's just walked back to dry land), or if I'm just not gonna fall in love with songs the way I could at 15. Anyways, and with love and peace, and honestly, has her writing changed since Silent Shout? Her formula is great but she produced a whole noise album, you'd hope that she figured out how to traverse even weirder pop noise waters by now but instead its like she's just walked back to dry land.
This is why other people's opinions do not matter. See if you like it yourserlf. It's a solid 9.5/10 for me. Only track I don't particularly like so far is 'Even it Out'. Album has been on repeat since March and it's September now. Saw the live show in person too - STUNNING to say the least. Ethreeal. Powerful.
i have to say - I didn't love plunge when i first heard it but like all great records - and the band the fall - it sticks with you - and if you stick with it, you will fall in love which i did. The same is happening currently with the new FEver ray record.
I miss the triple traple of the 'Plunge' album, but still a very powerful and emotional experience. 'Bottom Of The Ocean' is definitely a new Karaoke favorite.
I love hearing you analyze music and watching your videos but man I am so surprised you aren't digging this album more! As not just a music lover but a musician myself this has been one of the more exciting recent albums I've experienced and stands as a beautiful companion to their debut as fever ray. You should really give it another chance. Just play it while on a walk or doing something so you can experience the music not just as a critic. Come onnnnn. Lol you're great though, love the videos ❤
I don’t understand that u say u are “haunted” by passages like “this country makes it hard to fuck”. I think it’s so clear that it’s a protest song. Which tend to be that way. And to a queer person, sometimes it’s good to throw away the poetry and scream for better treatment plainly.
Karin is unique for sure. She is yet to match the creative mastery from the Knife albums but she is a solid solo artist. What weirds me out is her desire to make herself look as repulsive as possible. She dives deep into the cringe/absurdist realm.

Bottom of the ocean is actually a rework of a song fever ray made 8 years ago called “no face” release on the compilation to raise funds for the Fukushima catastrophe. Very little changes where made from the original but in my opinion they sadly took away that atmospheric and metaphysical sound signatures that made fever ray so unique back then. They had such a subtle yet radical expression of queerness without shoving it in the face of the audience, but rather whispering it… which is much stronger I feel. (“Run through the moss in high heels”) The 2009 album will still be that sparkle of creative genius that makes it a timeless masterpiece.

And for Plunge, there was the magnificent chilling violin ballad that is Red Trails, which makes me think of the dramatic ending to season 4 of Stranger Things for some reason. *lol*
I might bump it up to an 8 myself. It's more focussed and better quality than Plunge by a long way. That last song truly is mediocre though - should have been kept as a b-side or something.
This album really just did not grab me. It just felt like a weaker Bjork album.
Okay I'll listen to the Self titled again thanks for the reminder
He just doesn’t get it… he just doesn’t get it 😢
This album is spectacular 😮🙏👍
Fever Ray is the only Karen worth listening to.
Just cause it radicalizes romance doesn’t mean it’s a 0 Melon.
Havent even watched it yet but this is the worst review ive ever seen
Kept hoping Karin's eyes would subtly dart towards Anthony at certain moments. Loving this album! solid 9/aoty
man that first fever ray album was so huge for me. 7/10 is a super form-your-own-opinion rating lol. haven't listened to it yet.
Do I have to listen to Sugar Ray before I listen to Fever Ray?
Shes finally back to her 2009 roots. Not that circus music from last albums
