19:55 - Actually, both phrases are arcade accurate. The USA version of Donkey Kong says, "How high can you get?". The Japanese version says, "How high can you try?" They were going for the original Japanese phrasing.

No, it's not a Japanese vs. American thing. Early versions of Donkey Kong, both Japanese and American, say "How high can you try?" and later versions, both Japanese and American say, "How high can you get?"

Great video thanks. I never had Donkey Kong on my 2600 but I used to play it in the arcade. When the original mame came out I asked the developer where the gaps were in the first level. Turns out all those years ago I was playing a bootleg version in the arcade. Donkey Kong and Bubble Bobble are still my favourite arcade games.
As you said if those version had come out when I had had my 2600 originally it would have been amazing.
    Thanks again

What an interesting and thorough video.
It's pretty crazy just how much they were able to squeeze out of that old system.
I would certainly not have thought such a graphically complex level could run that well on an Atari 2600.

When it comes to the various Atari 2600 VCS versions of Donkey Kong I already have the original Coleco Donkey Kong for the Atari 2600 which I like playing, but I was not really satisfied with it being missing two of the arcade levels. Having watched your video I believe that I would like to have the Donkey Kong Arcade version for my Atari 2600. I don't care for the scrolling up and down the screen like on the Donkey Kong VCS version. What I do like is that Donkey Kong Arcade and Donkey Kong VCS both have all four screen levels like the original Nintendo Donkey Kong coin-op arcade video game has. I might buy the Harmony cartridge some time in the near future, but for now I will have to rely upon playing the various versions on my Stella emulator program for my Windows PC.

These homebrews are new to me- 5 Vintage Gamer Geek demerits for me ;)
That said, I'll state an observation I've aired on similar videos before- if you're going through the time and effort of making a new homebrew like these, why not make most/all the screens new layouts/new screens to provide a new game play experience vs trying to make a more Arcade accurate version.
Just play the Arcade ROM in MAME or similar for that!
Call it DK II or DK Returns, etc and have new mazes/puzzles to solve.
Easily said from a backseat developer, and I commend these guys for their efforts.
Still, these are cool collectables for retro gamers, and have enough variation in gameplay due to 2600 limitations to make them interesting

For what i know, back then they had to create the graphics by knowing exactly how the raser beem gun of a tv works by telling the beam wich pixel to generate at wich color and at wich moment, same thing for sprites, so you can imagine how hard and boring that must have be to do so,
I don’t know if theres software today wich could automatically convert backgrounds & sprites automatically into co.ordinated signals for the tia chip, but if so then it should be nowadays much easier to make atari 2600 g ames unlike back in the day and adding extra rom and ram into the cartride should allow better graphics to be possible on the atari 2600😁

    (1) Donkey Kong had a short-lived cartoon series in the early 80s.
    (2) The "Pie" Factory is actually the Cement Factory, as it's a construction site. Why would pies be used? Might look like them, doesn't make sense.
    (3) The more recent MAME ROMS have slightly wrong colors, as they were actually mimicking the fading green electron gun the CRTs in the game had.
    (4) "How High Can You Try?" comes from the bootleg arcade game, which Nintendo approved, as Nintendo could not keep up with the demand for the machines.

How can they do a game in Atari BASIC on the 2600? The interpreter would take up the entire addressable ROM space, as the 6507 is a scaled down version of the 6502. And then there's the fact that the video and sound hardware is totally different. I've seen some impressive games done in Atari BASIC for the 8-bit computers, but I don't see how it would even be possible on the 2600.

    • @ReviewAtari2600

Batari Basic (what they used) is written and compiled elsewhere (like on a PC)... and made into a ROM file. So the code is Basic-Like for the instructions, but it is not interpreted on the 2600. They are also currently working on C-Like coding as well.

Yeah, the Colecovision DK was way grapically superior to the VCS... and I believe on purpose. Pac-Man was really awful. but ET was not that bad. I want to do a video about that... the idea was just too complex for your average VCS gamer (at the time)... he just should of had ET going around a maze collecting Reese's pieces and it would have been okay. :)

      @seanbryan2792 3 года назад

@@ReviewAtari2600 Well, the ColecoVision had a whole lot more power than the 2600, with 5 years of technology occurring between the release of the two systems (though Coleco chose easy to obtain Texas Instruments parts rather than be at the bleeding edge of what existed), and being much easier to program for. The ColecoVision had 16k of video RAM and another 1k scratchpad, but the Atari 2600 had like 1% of that and only *128 bytes* of RAM total. Honestly I don't know how anybody programmed anything useful in 128 bytes, bankswitching to areas stored in the ROM or not, I look at the programmers of the good 2600 games as miracle workers doing something that should be impossible. I hadn't seen these homebrew Donkey Kong things before today but again I'm super-impressed that they managed anything like it.
Atari's first attempt at Pac-man was terrible, but Ms Pac-man and Jr Pac-man were excellent on the 2600, and as for Atari's work creating games for the ColecoVision, that was phenomenal, their unreleased Pac-man prototype is fantastic and pretty much all the Atarisoft games actually released on it were also great. E.T.'s problem wasn't exactly the gameplay (the falling-into-pits nonsense notwithstanding), it's that they had such faith in the license/low business acumen that they gave Warshaw a way too short 5 weeks to program something before forcing it out the door and then printed up more copies of the E.T. cartridge than the number of Atari 2600s in existence. There was no way that could work out positively for them, it was pretty insane. And led to one of the most famous burials in a desert since the pyramids were built.

@@seanbryan2792 So very right you are... I should get you to write my scripts, you summed up my thoughts exactly. In fact, I have been thinking about a set of video's to sum up the 1983 North American Game Crash. ET is not a good or bad game (again, the "pits"!), but one totally wrong for the 2600 system and that particular point in time. I blame Pac-Man for the loss of consumer confidence in Atari and that start of the game crash.
Homebrews certainly have a big advantage over original programmers with all we know about the hardware, adding co-processors, bank-switching, and open time-tables. HSW needs a medal for programming ET is five weeks. The third party manufacturers were pumping out trash that was much much worse!
