Why I HATE Atari! ruclips.net/video/ADVOHcn43lQ/видео.html
I’ll come over and play the soccer game… i don’t have any friends either… well any that like retrogames
That's what happens when you live in space on a UFO.
great video! i liked Zeviouz but i could not figure out how to throw the bombs (i am using Stella)
Thanks Greg, great video. My favorite is the very faithful looking Loderunner. Which was the very first cartridge I got for my C64 back in 1984. Also I really liked Stay Frosty, that's probably the most impressive though fitting Thrust on the 2600 is also amazing. It came out for the BBC Micro and was ported to most of the 8bits.
I played the Stay Frosty games for a long time!
Thrust was massive in Europe on the old computers (C64, Spectrum, etc).
I beated both homebrew versions of donkeykong on the 2600, they were much harder to play because of it’s slightly off hit or collision detection, but it was a guge releave once i beated both versions of it, phew,
Load runner also looks fantastic,
Normally the atari 2600 wasn’t ment to generate such incredible graphics & sounds and good ai, but by adding extra ram,rom ,and a powerful arm accelerator processor in the cartride along with programming tricks, it is possible to make games for the 2600 with high quality graphics & sounds close to that of early nes games, now if only those games were at such high quality back then who ever knows how much better it could,ve sold,
But at the other hand those supirior versions of games would,ve certainly became more expensive and possibly drive off peoples from it to ever buy it so who ever knows that it could,ve caused an average effect,
Also did you know that theres a homebrew version of 4K & 8K of pacman? Those versions destroys the official 2600 one in every way, you have to see to believe it😁👍
So many of these homebrew gems really showcase the simple fact that better graphics don't always equate to better gameplay. Imagine if the designers had not only the time, but the resources back then, Atari, and gaming in general might have taken a different route. I think the overall fun however, has always been found within the simplistic style of the console's library. One of the many reasons that to this day, I still have the Atari connected in the game room, and I can play any title without getting to invested in the game.
Fun video Greg! 👍
M4 was a B&W arcade game. I remember it on Mame
Ah...
Wow, I that DK arcade game looks amazing! My first Atari 2600 game was DK, back in the day.
15:41 I think the claim to fame of this Space Invaders port is that we got 50 aliens at once, which is pretty close to the arcade's 55. Even if they had to accomplish it using the "background" layer. That said, there's an abandoned Space Invaders homebrew that manages to get all 55 aliens, using actual sprites, and with zero flicker. It's probably the most impressive 2600 technical feat I know of: ruclips.net/video/GBROohTGBb0/видео.html
29:28 My very earliest arcade memory is of seeing a literal row of at least 5 _Lunar Rescue_ cabinets side by side along the wall of the arcade in my city's mall. I remembered all the floating asteroids but didn't know the name of the game in my memory until maybe ten years ago. One of those games that probably ricocheted off arcades back in the day. So it's pretty weird seeing a homebrew 2600 take on something buried deep in my past.
wow. Some of these are hard to believe they are running on a 2600. Just imagine if Atari and the developers had produced games like that on the 2600 back in the day.
Marble Jumper = Cracker Barrel for the 2600 😂
*if you know you know
Some of these are really cool! I could imagine playing some of these as a kid and having fond memories of them, instead of like... ET and Pac-Man, and the DK port we actually got. BTW, to answer a couple of your questions, the bad guys in Halo are called the Covenant, and in the Fix-It Felix game it looks like you tell which windows are broken by whether the bars at the bottom are green or red when you stand in front of them. Kind of a weird mechanic imo, but eh.
That's right, the Covenant!
Donkey Kong PK is an exact replica for the arcade for the 7800. You should look into it.
29:28 There was a 40-year-old arcade game apparently on Space Invaders hardware that was like this.
Xevious !
Have you seen the Mortal Kombat wip for the 2600?
halo reminds me of venture sfx and when the creature dies same sounds and die symbol and berserk
I think that getting a 32K Donkey Kong back in 1982 is a bit much for my imagination!
I agree. A 32k cartridge would have cost more than the atari vcs console, back in 1982.
There is no Basic for the 2600. There is not enough memory.
It's really cool to see what this system is capable of (well, in some games more than others). The Donkey Kong (not the scrolling one) is pretty amazing, and I can't believe someone made a version of Lode Runner for the VCS.
Tech has come a long way to enable these games.
Is there any way to get the donkey Kong games on cartridge?
Hi there, Greg... where can I get all these homebrews?
20:19 that's not Mario! He goes by the name Jump Man😏
Eliminatior reminds me of Tron Deadly Disks
Great video with a lot of awesome games to check out!
It's based on an old Taito arcade game..... 29:57
you are good
Doomsday Intercepter, what could have been? Definitely a great array of homebrews!
Right? Just needed a bit more gameplay
It a clone of Thrust (C64 and other computers of that time). And yes, Thrust is inspired by Gravitar. But you have to collect the F thingies, they are fuel for your ship. 30:50
