This piece of music was central to to my husband's funeral. He died 14 July 2018, and we set his photo montage to this as it was his all time favourite. How I loved that man from northern England with all my heart. We were together as partners and husband/wife for nearly 32 years of intense love. He died in front of me of a massive heart attack. May God bless his soul forever. Peace and love to you Alan, whwerever you may be. X X X from your loving wife Sonya, now and till the end of time. X X X
My dad walked me down the aisle to this. When I was little he worked away when my mam played this i knew he was coming home. Such a special song for me.
Don't know a Geordie who doesn't love this,. Being sat in St James' Park as the teams come out to this is amazing. Hairs on the back of the neck every single time.
Having recently lost my Grandmother to cancer, we decided to play this at her funeral. This was one of her all time favourite songs and I'll always listen to this in her memory. Also, as a lifelong West Ham fan, I will happily wrap my arms around Newcastle United fans whenever this is played. Mark is an absolute legend and its 100% understandable why this has been adopted by the Toon Army! Absolutely brilliant! #WHU #NUFC
Am a MACKEM fan from Hebburn but this just breaks me up cos I now live in Shrewsbury but when I cross the Tyne on the train going home I never fail to have a tear in my eyes bless you Mr Knopfler
Call and response. The guitar calls and the saxophone responds.Clever and thoughtful piece of music.Great film and an even greater soundtrack.Mark is a very under rated guitarist.
One of my favorite movies and one of my favorite movie themes. Very aptly titled when you consider what “Local Hero” is really about. Perfectly captures the longing we all have for that place we call home…When I watch Knopfler play, so much going on at the same time. Just a master of the instrument
Whatever gene pool Mark Knopfler sprang from I want to swim in--impeccable taste, incomparable talent! Nigel you can come skinny dipping any time! WOW!
Wunderbar! Der große Meister legt wie immer sehr viel Ausdruck in sein Spiel, auch und gerade bei den Werken, die inzwischen mehr als 30 Jahre alt sind. Grandios! Vielen Dank für den Upload.
The tenor sax goes so well with Marks style of playing. Should’ve used it more. This is up there with the best ( and I’m from Yorkshire, home of Brass bands!)
When I heard this first, knowing I could never afford a Dire Straits live show , and desperately hoped for something like RUclips! Ideas are dozen a dime without execution!
They sounded GREAT!! My gawd they all look old....sorry. Mark and Richard Park and the tall bass player who has been with him for years....and was that Chad Cromwell on drums? Where in the hell did time go? Howay lads.
It's Nigel Hitchcock one of the greatest sax players. First saw him in the early eighties, playing with NYJO when he was 13, even then he was an artist of great skill and maturity. His career never reached the heights he's capable of, maybe because he seems to confine himself to playing key roles as a sidesman on other people's albums with the occasional guest spot live with bands like the late Stan Tracy and, here, Mark Knopfler.

As a Liverpool fan I can only say this: When I hear this tune played I wish I was a georgi. Absolute fantastic. YNWA NUFC.
My Wedding song!!! This music was made for me, definitely!!!
When you get older, it's the sax that you miss the most.
Ain't that the truth!!
Was that a typo 😉
@@haileash No. Just an observation from someone who sold their saxophone years ago.

As someone away from Ireland for 20 years, every time my plane banks left over Dublin Bay to land this is the song in my head.
As a Nufc season ticket holder for many years this still brings the hairs up on the back of my neck at every home game

Cool to see a fellow train enthusiast here. Greetings from Oregon, USA!
We can still feel the spirit of the better old days thanks to Mark Knopfler and the Music he has been making.

" The soul of the world, embedded in sound." Indeed.
What’s so great is how thrilled Mark looks at the end, in that it all went so well. Just pure joy in playing such great music.
Nigel Hitchcock: Gifted and a lovely bloke to boot.

Opening tune each year at the Great North Run. Puts a spring to your step. Up the Geordies!
Whatever gene pool Mark Knopfler sprang from I want to swim in--impeccable taste, incomparable talent! Nigel you can come skinny dipping any time! WOW!
Sax e guitarra combinaçao perfeita..
Great thing about this of many versions online is that the sax is given the right prominence.
I love this version !
I was there. It was a wonderful evening
You just feel a...hometown tension rise...breathless! Until when gratefully they break into it...Roar!
Howay the lads and all the folk from the mother land love each other and we will rise up again and the team will win !!
Sencillamente fantástico!!!! ..No sé lo que tiene esta música, pero hace que me emocione cada vez que la escucho.

He´s the great Nigel Hitchcock who played also on the Privateering CD. He joined the band just for a few shows of the tour.
he s fantastic the only good performance of that song on the whole tour was in Newcastle 18-5 2013
