About 5 more weeks and then I'm leaving, we lost the battle against cancer. This song will accompany me on my journey. I met my wife at a Mark Knopfler concert and this was the song that was played during our wedding, now it will accompany me on my final journey.
I'm so sorry I cried reading this. This really is a beautiful 💜💜🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏😔
I'm so sorry for you and your family. Remember the smiles.
You have broken my heart reading your comment 🙏🏽
I'm sorry to read your comment. Seems like you had a lot to live for and have had a wonderful life. Hopefully, there is another side where pain is only a memory ....
When time comes around and you know the ending something can be said for this as long as personal pain and suffering for all is tolerable it aids acceptance but never closure as a good life lives on with your loved ones this I believe is heaven
The private space you have in the minds of loved ones.
What more can we ask on our journey.
Peace to you.
A twelve year old boy was playing this outside Newcastle United’s football ground just over a week ago, Mark Knopfler saw a video of the lad and sent him a signed vinyl copy of the song wishing him all the best and told him to keep at it. What a down to earth legend.
That's an absolutely brilliant story and I salute Mark for mankind that young boys day 🎧🏴❤️🎸👍😁🏴
Love reading things like this, what a top guy, brilliant!
Oh wow,that's lovely .
@@michael5089 Oh damn that looks terrible 😦 Apologies all, I'm so sorry. Can't say for sure as this was a big night for me 🍻🍹& lots of great music. Have a fair idea though as 2nd time re random comment, last time it was stupid fat possum 😂 Appears I have left ones device on the bed late one night after a few drinks, music & falling asleep. Probably not waking to ones child in the room beside me who has likely come into my bed after waking to the 2 brat white dogs who live at the house behind us that bark, yap & howl all night if left out especially if there's lots of possums around on our shared fence. "Stupid fat possum" jumped on our roof near her room one night & was quite loud = the 1st comment/time I looked like I left a weird comment & hopefully this is the last. I was listening to this earlier & she must have been angry at the dogs for waking her up & found I'd left this beside me & wanted to tell you all about them. I'm so sorry & will delete the comment. Thought the OP's comment was awesome. Kudos to Mark, the young talented dude & whoever introduced this brilliant song to him, great taste. Btw not a dog hater, got a Border Collie x Kelpie - much cooler & quieter dog though 😂 Honestly these dogs are so annoying but sadly owners are worse & wont change. I'll just try to remember to stash my device better on nights like this lol gotta laugh if you knew the madness here some nights with this - close to emergency services & frequent sirens & their dogs are the kind who bark & wail to sirens, good times but at least this was a good night for me 😉😁
Knopfler, Top Top Man. Nuff Said:)
My father died 5 years ago today. Music was something we always enjoyed together and Mark Knopfler was his favorite. It always makes me feel like he's still around. I have two sons to enjoy it with now. Take a moment to appreciate the people in your lives.
So sad your dad passes away, he had great taste in music, Dire Straits is fantastic, they made fantastic music, take care buddy
Já passei por isso e sei como se sente. Meus sinceros sentimentos por sua perda insubstituível. Nossos pais são os nossos heróis e essa canção vai para eles. Tenha força. Abraço.
AMEN.

@@shanebowers7902 Is the THE Shane Bowers? Good to know we have similar tastes.
This tune will never go out of date
Genius. He's not obsessed with speed of play, or trying to be what he's not, just the intonation and perfection of every note. What a legend.
So so true.
It's called taste, and nobody does taste better than him.
That is because he doesn't use a pick. Watch his hands, his fingers give his playing that special full bodied tone
@@raymondpierotti8414 Thanks for stating the obvious for us, Ray. Maybe teach your grandmother to suck eggs next?

My mother's favorite song, she wanted to be played at her funeral, we of course did as she wished. You will never know how your music touches the hearts of millions of people and how thankful we are for you.
Sorry for your loss, I miss my mother every day & it's been 20yrs, Rj in Oz
@rjnation5042 thank you, you are well.
My condolences and kudos on honouring your mother‘s wishes. It’s extraordinary how the genius of one person can really transcend time and space, and connect us all in a shared experience. Wishing you peace. 🙏🌷

This is the only piece of music that can have this cynical old man to tears. Every time.
I'm a cynical old man.
This and many other tunes bring me to tears.
Words are not always needed.
That smile from Mark to the drummer. Absolute magic. Both in the moment!

I think he is smiling about the good feeling around everyone there. What a magic moment!
Seriously, one of the coolest dudes on the planet. Effortless skill and soulful feel for his music. Incomparable style in my opinion. Every note counts, no show-offy shredding or dive-bomning whammy bars or fancy array of foot pedals. Just a pure joy to listen to and watch
hello how are you doing it nice seeing you here ?
A Geordie.. No fuss. Be straight.
I love how he turns his back on the audience & acknowledges the musicians to show his appreciation. Seen Dire Straits twice & Mark twice & he never fails to say thank you. The man doesn’t possess an ego despite being a genius. 🎸
Exactly
Genius would be an understatement!!
A proper musician should appreciate other musicians: it’s a brother and sisterhood one big family. Mark is a proper musician.
It cant be an overstatment that MK is this eras Beethoven, Mozart, Strauss any one of the classic music writers or a few of them wrapped up in one genius...this has to be one of the most memorable pieces of music of all time...and MK just plays like its a jam session...
How absolutely on the dot you are ! I watched this about a million times and 3 things are burnt into my mind during this masterpiece :
1) The lead violin...her gentle smile at 2:05. 2) At the end ....freeze at 4:47 and 4:48 and see the adulation on the cellist's face as she looks at Mark plucking the final flamboyant D note on the top E string ....and 3 ) The quiet smile between Mark and the drums says it all.... Incomparable genius !!!
No gimmicks.....just pure talent and class!
Yes, pure talent... and deep feeling of guitar, music and life!
Many years ago, in the distant days of Blockbuster, I rented "Local Hero" to watch with my mother. She was dying, a long and terrible death. I'd seen the movie before, remembered it fondly, and figured it could lift both our moods. It succeeded beyond anything I'd hoped. At the end, we both were crying while smiling as Knopfler played this tune into the credits. My mother and I hardly ever agreed on anything -- taste, politics, life choices -- but we agreed the movie was wonderful, magical, enchanting. She died a few weeks later.
I tried watching the movie again some years ago, but it just didn't feel right. I couldn't make it to the ending. But I listen to the "Going Home" theme fairly often. It always brings a smile to my face. And some tears.
THAT STORY IS SO VERY WONDERFUL!!!!!!!
Embrace the smile and the tears.... they will always be special.

Thanks for that story, Will. I remember renting that tape in the mid '80s out of curiosity. It turned out to be a lifelong favorite.
Why listen to anyone else. This magic will live for ever. Nearly 75, and sure I have another 20+ to go.
Ich wünsche mir eine einzige Umarmung!❤
One of the finest pieces of music ever written....
As a cardiac surgeon is to ailing hearts, this man repairs ailing souls.
This version is astounding... Mark is arguably one of the greatest guitarist that ever lived. He honored every musician playing with him with just a glance and a smiled reply. He and Brian May might just be the two most humble guitarists ever. What class!
Mark Knopfler is a true Genius. He has his own very unique Style of playing Guitar. God bless him!
what an incredible genious with the guitar.....
He's so relaxed and so amazingly humble and you can tell he enjoys whatever he's playing.

5 minutes of brilliance.
Hearing this always makes me homesick for the UK despite leaving 37 years ago.
Mark and his guitar are one. Its an extension of his mind and body.
Do your worst and they surely did, absolutely amazing.
I love how he turns and smiles at his fellow bandmembers! Real Connection and it shows in their Playing!
yes, it's common in many of his videos :)
Best thing you'll ever see
Played exactly as how it should be played. No gimmicks, crystal clear.
I wish I could give this a thousand likes I love it so much.
I STILL think, in my book, he's the best guitarist of all times.
same, man.
I agree, cannot think of a better guitar player and composer
Completamente, pienso lo mismo.!!

I LOVE HOW HE SMILES ON STAGE!
I really hope he is healthy enough to do at least ONE MORE TOUR when his new album comes out next year! I'm so young that I haven't had the opportunity to enter a consert of his before.
A masterpiece. So beautiful. Mark Knopfler is a genius.
Mark Knopfler, arguably the best guitarist i've ever heard...
Andres Segovia, Francisco Montoya, Christopher Parkening,...? I like Knopfler but I am sure he would agree is building on the shoulders of giants.

Absolutely the best version of this song I ever saw him do. The drummer was just brilliant, so much power. The whole band amazing.
Not bad, but he was no Terry Williams
La banda muy bien. Pero digamos que no es su mejor día.
Thank you Mr Knopfler...
I've listened to 1000's of hours and seen him live three times...in all of those performances I've not heard him fluff a single note...the man is not of this Earth.
My dad absolutely loved this song and when he died on May 7th we played this as the walk out song at the end of his funeral.
This one's for you, love you dad and I'll see you soon ❤💔💖
This was played at the end of my uncles' funeral. Such an apt song
@@katherinebellinger594 yes it's such a beautiful piece of music that we first heard in a film called Local Hero and also got us into dire straights .
When I go that's what I want
He plays the guitar like a GOD.
Forever grateful to my dad for showing me this masterpiece
his guitar is like magic
you mean his fingers! XD agree..... pure melody
I've always liked Dire Straits, never been a massive fan. Though, I do have Brothers in Arms on vinyl. Yes bought in the 80's. I've also had a guitar since the mid 80's but never took it seriously. Now I'm retired I decided to get the old acoustic out of mothballs. lo and behold it still sounds tuneful. But I was still pretty crap at it. Only the odd riff. But at the start of the pandemic I set myself a goal, (as I wasn't going to spend much of my retirement out and about}, to learn to play properly. So I bought some kindle books on chords and other guitar magic and set about my task. Whilst checking out the guitar teachers on RUclips ( which may I say has helped tremendously ) I came across this video of Mark Live in London playing Going Home. That was it I was hooked. I can play it pretty much all the way through now, with the occasional (fingers crossed) incorrect note. At the beginning of the pandemic I set my target and my reward would be a new guitar, as the old one I've had since the 80's which was given to me by a neighbour. That new guitar is now wrapped up under the xmas tree and I can't wait to break it out and practice Going Home on it. So thank you Mark Knopfler for giving me the inspiration to keep going though out this dreadful year. A merry Christmas to everyone and hopefully a better new year.
For you too Sir ;-) What a nice story :-)
Me has emocionado. Long live 🙏
Can't tell you how much reading this comment has made me smile. I set myself the same challenge! 2 months on, how is the new guitar working out for you?
Great read Dave. A few years ago I was delving around in RUclips looking for a song. I stumbled across a Mark Knopfler interview where he spoke about his guitars and how hard it is to be a good guitarist. From that moment I bought a guitar and started the long road to being competent. I go back to that interview quite regularly as it reminds me about where it all started, for me🎸
One of the most under-rated guitarists. I just love his work. I listen to him for hours!
This brings me to tears every time I hear this. Mark really poured his heart into this one. Watch his face and his eyes
The smile between Mark and the drummer say's it all.....Ownership of emotion....
love love love love love love love this song
The greatest instrumental track EVER.
Must have watched this hundreds of times ,it doesn't age .
When Goodwood and the racing community celebrated the life of Sir Stirling Moss they had Jackie Stewart take a lap in one of Moss' cars and had Mark Knopfler play this song. VERY emotional.
I listen to this song every morning and night, love his facial expressions ,sound of his voice, it's so heavenly, takes all my troubles away. MK YOU'RE THE BEST
I don't know you. But I share your feeling. This song set me free. Is something so beautiful and perfect. I feel that it remembers me who I am. Thanks for enjoying.
Background music is incredible and his facial expressions are so humble.
Tha k you for responding. Enjoy the rest of your day!
Thank you for all the responses. He has a way to never let you down. Always in my HEART and yours.
Could anybody hear a song? VM did You?
This is how music should be played
Just wish I could put many a more likes on this absolute classic.
Watching this in 2022...amazing piece. The audience just chilled. No camera phones no social media look at me no validation needed just pure. Miss it. Thank you Mark Knoffler.
He deserves admiration from the onlookers. Greatest musician in the world ever.
Certainly in the top ten I would say . Mark and Lyndsey Buckingham are two of the most underrated guitarists ever !!
1000 hearts for MARK KNOPFLER
I really like how Mark is looking at the band and smiling - like it's not about putting on a show to impress people but simply about playing music even if there was an audience there or not.
Wonderful comment, and in a band that is just how it should be. Everyone totally enjoying the moment, fabulous video.
Totally agree, no jumping around and prancing about on stage, just gets on with playing to perfection.
I can hear this a thousand times and I still hear a telephone ringing in Ferness.
Iconic music with beautiful ladies with violins!!
Is no one going to mention the mastery of the drummer on this one? That man did a magnificent job.
That's Chad Cromwell on the drums and Guy Fletcher on the keyboard!
My thoughts also, excellent drumming which adds to the overall listening.
My Mum loved this instrumental as do I, I know it was her way at the time of connecting with me I made sure it was played at her funeral 'Going Home' rest easy Mum, See ya soon.
Hi North
Is there anyone better than Mark? Of all the greats who have made us smile over the years, I think Mark is number 1. Not just a local hero, mate, worldwide and epic. Thank you Mark and to all the guys. D
Mark Knopfler is definitely first, and Pat Metheny is a close second in my mind.
I'm a big fan of Mark and his wonderful compositions, but technically there are better. Joscho Stephan is currently probably the best guitarist in the world. Check it out on RUclips ;-)
@@dfmalo8 Thanks for the heads up. I'll have a go. D
Local Hero had such an impact on me as a child, and this tune tugs at my heart strings every time I hear it. At the time, I didn’t realise exactly how big an impact it had had; but, looking back, and having moved from England to now be living a couple of villages away from Pennan (where the village scenes were filmed), it’s crystal clear - Local Hero changed my life! ❤️
Yep changed my life for similar reasons.
He is one of the only people who slows me down
Glorious... simply glorious.
Thank you Mark.
So simple. Yet so powerful
The Stratocaster has such a pure clear sound, brilliant.
Especially when it's played by a master of the instrument!
I can't play a single note on mine the way Mark does.
Seriously I have no idea how he does it.
@Reijo Väliranta Check out Tunnel of Love.
The final solo is one of the greatest of all time in many people's books.
Especially the live versions.
Agreed !!! Also hear the strat when Mark and Emmy Lou sing "Our Shangrila " live on stage...i believe it the ultimate Strat sound...even Hank would be proud of that tone !!!
Anytime Marks fingers hits those strings is a win for all who love some damn good music.. Other dimensional

Going home is one of the best piece of Mark knopfler I love it
I'm still so touched by this song, man I love the versions on A Night In London.
Probably Knopfler is going to remain my favourite guitarist of all time.
Played this song at my grandfather's funeral on my new Strat which my friends had gotten me for my 30th birthday. And I love how it makes people feel genuine emotion, just look at all the people here in the comments talk about their loved ones. What a legend.
Pure skill, and a pleasure to listen to him and his band play.
Played this at my husbands funeral as he was a great Newcastle united supporter. Thank you Mark.
The greatest guitarist ever.
I could listen to Mark for hours. He is one of my favourite guitarplayers.
MK is just a genuine guy. Unlike most people who become super rock stars, MK didn't change to live the part. He is much more comfortable here with a small audience being himself than he ever was at the height of Dire Straits success.
I totally believe that about MK. He is such a superstar and yet such a normal human being. xxx
Mark knofler pure unsurpassed virtuoso of six metal strings
One of the greatest pieces of music ever written. Up there with the Masters, Knopfler is a genius.
Not only the music, but what a brilliant film
I find all Marks music very emotional now in later years, they just remind me of something, or someone or even sometime from the past. Just like this one does, I am now sat up on my couch at 06.30am with a cup of tea with my ear buds in while my wife is still sound asleep, tear in my eye enjoying the past. Beautiful.

One of the greatest songwriters and performers of our age. His music is timeless, I think, and maybe I’m wrong, but will be listened to in 100 years and be hailed as great classical music.
Mark Knopfler Thank you for your Going Home piece, l absolutely love it, and there is something Very special about it,
Like a gift from above to your soul through your fingers, and each time I hear Going Home my eyes fill with tears. It is Gorgeous, and the first piece I practiced playing to get my fingers working again after my hands were injured, I got singed
quite a bit. God bless you Mark.

When I was young in the Navy in the early 80s we were at sea and on repeat was Dire Straits on the ship radio. At the time I thought ‘not again’ but when you have been through various conflicts over the years, songs resonate. I was always happy to be going home to see my folks and ‘come back to earth.’ Songs like this and ‘Brothers in arms’ represent that era and are emotional for some of us.
Pretty much the same with me. Although I was in the Merchant navy this was blasting out of most of the cabins on the Oriana in the early 80s
My favorite piece of music ever!!!
Reminds me of how good Mark is heard it after one of the Newcastle matches a legend
