How do you prevent them from pushing the top leg off?

Jared H as I learned this, when you hip escape onto your inside hip maintaining your grip on your upper thigh, putting your butt toward their head, drive your upper leg's hamstring into their face while pinching your knees inward tight while you extend backward on the arm: their shoulders should lift off the mat due to the pressure on their shoulder, meaning they have no upper body on the ground for leverage to push the leg up over their head, which is being pushed away by your leg anyway, and it's hamstring versus forearm extension from there. They'll let go eventually if you commit to it; although if they do pass the leg over, I went for the triangle, far side armbar, or omoplata.

I love extending my top leg and thumping their face with my hamstring when they try to sit up. So satisfying lol
