I'm a dietitian and I really don't mind prescribing medical foods for people with arfid. As long as they get some nutrition and then try some new foods now and then... I'm very happy. I do try to have them appreciate multiple options, at least two different brands/flavors, bc since corona they sometimes are out of stock for months.

I only ate PB & Honey sandwiches for years! Peer pressure was the only thing that changed it eventually. I am only now at 48 figuring out ASD. Figured out ADHD-I 2 years ago. I am now ill and disabled from MS. After having gallbladder issues and losing way too much weight i am now seeing a return of food sensory issues and having to eat protein shakes through out the day. Originally it was the try and gain weight, but now I am realizing that this is likely the new normal... Ugh. The struggle is real and no one understands it. Especially my spouse... Thanks for sharing your experience!

If you'd like a diy craft for some wibble wobble, add colored water and some vegetable oil in a jar with a tight lid. The oil floats on top and makes the blue water look like ocean waves. Not to eat! But definitely great for some sensory soothing.

I felt so relieved that I actually like vegetables my parents would scream at me to take "no thank you helpings" of, they just weren't cooking them properly, also I just... don't like cooked or raw yellow onions...never have, white, scallions, shallots, and red are delicious, just not yellow... and I find that when food is so hot that it burns my mouth, I find more comfort in that, I know most of the time as long as it's cooked I can't get sick from anything..but having it hot if it's something commonly served warm or hot and it's savory with meat and veggies is just...nicer.

I feel like quite often (not always, of course) when someone doesn't like vegetables, it's because they don't how to cook them, or the parents don't. My brother doesn't have ARFID nor ASD, and it would bug me to no end how they would try to force cooked vegetables on him. He's eating them raw, would you _please_ let it go, for the love of god, it's not that important!

My youngest (13) has autism & ARFID and has three special meal replacements a day as he eats very little and is very restrictive on what foods he can tollerate.
He's been under specialist care since Sept with nutritionists, physiotherapists, cognative therapists and a doctor that specialises in eating disorders and they help though it's the supplement drinks that stop him from starving. He's no longer red flagged as danger to life but he's not out of the woods yet. He's on a strict no exercise plan.
No walks in the woods/park/beach or too and from school which is really difficult as he wants to be with his friends.

What really get me is your speaking voice at the age of 16. This is a real gift. Recording audiobooks would reduce the amount of people to work with. Or other jobs like that. If you learn the technical side by yourself you can do it even at home given the right equipment there. Edditing videos isn't so far off.

I had a phase where I was hyper focused in trying new foods, when I was very sensory seeking. And I'm glad I had that hyperfocus because there's more foods and tastes I can enjoy but at the same time my sensory issues get triggered way more resulting in me not being able to eat AT ALL. This year was really difficult, because I know so many foods I can eat but I just couldn't get myself to eat any of them. So frustrating. It felt war more frustrating than when I knew none of those foods. Idk how to explain it properly.

Thank you so much!!! I deal with trauma/anxiety induced ARFID I think. I used to restrict intentionally, but now it’s gotten to the point where my body just can’t handle much food anymore even when I want to eat more to get stronger. I have been considering adding a daily meal shake to my diet, but I can’t stand the taste of most powdered shakes. If this one has your seal of approval though, I’ll check it out!
If you happen to read this, is it very chalky or grainy? Those are tough textures for me to handle 😖

Ugh, I eat way too much just to calm me down.
It's all vegan, but as now one can buy all the things like big boxes of ice-cream or pudding also in vegan it is too easy for me to just grab it if I cannot decide what else to eat or feel to tired to prepare something more healthy.
For me food has to be spicy and no textures like cooked grains that bother me.
When I was a kid I sorted my food a lot and meat was really complicated to me. The fat at the side, ewww. I was always told not to "sezieren"(german for when doctors investigate dead bodies to see what happened) my food.
I then went vegetarian for longest time of my life and for the last maybe 15 years vegan.
No disgusting things now in food, just that not everything tastes good for me or some have not-wanted textures.

i used to rely on ensure plus meal replacement drinks... they became a huge samefood for me. but one day (idk, 3-5 months ago??) they just started giving me awful digestive issues and i haven't been able to drink a bottle ever since. i still have 3 packs of ensures in my fridge taking up space, bc i would buy 3-4 packs so as to not run out (i'd drink 1-2 a day). its sad that i cant drink them anymore. now i cant eat as much and arfid is just hitting me hard.
if anyone is curious, i would only be able to drink them after they sat in the freezer for a bit. typically 1.5-2 hours was the sweet spot. they turn into basically ice cream milkshakes, and can provide a lot of sensory stimulation when they're partially frozen and you're drinking them as they thaw out. i used to get the chocolate and vanilla flavors. max protein type.
getting protein drinks with low sugar just made my stomach and health worse over time, bc sucralose does that. but it's necessary for some people dietarily (for instance if you have diabetes). i transitioned into the ones that use regular sugar, which had its drawbacks but was maybe better in the long run.

I have autism (diagnosed at age 18) and chronic gastrointestinal problems, I’ve always been very particular about what I eat and it got worse after I had my gastrointestinal problems diagnosed (IBS-D and Acid Reflux), I barely ate anything and I was underweight, I had this nutritionist who gave me these Ensure Juice Drinks which I had to drink once or twice a day (depending on how much I ate), some flavors were good (like Strawberry, Peach, Fruit Punch and Orange) but others were absolutely vile (Apple, lemon and lime) I got taken off them when I got back to a healthy weight and I’ve been eating somewhat better than I used to, there are a lot of foods that I still struggle with and try to avoid because I can’t bare the texture or the taste or the smell, but things are definitely better than what they once were.
I used to swirl my juice around in the glass too! It’s a very satisfying motion to watch.
I only recently discovered your channel but I think the content that you cover is amazing and so informative; as someone who spent years being undiagnosed too, it’s nice to know that I’m not the only one who felt a certain way or had signs that literally everyone around me missed for years

I've tried a few supplements, but I've found em to be too thick. The texture is something I can't even bring myself to attempt swallowing. It's like a cross from a semi melted milkshake to a thick soy milk.
Kinda like if you have almond milk, make hot cocoa from it and then add peppermint essence to it. Gets thick and nasty. It's why I've avoided all almond milk the last two years. Can't bring myself to go near almond milk any more.
    Cashew milk isn't too bad.
Fave remains to be silk soy milk. Chocolate of course. I get to enjoy chocolate milk again :)
I remember when I tried silk milk for the first time. That was literally 30 years ago. Back then I could only find it in gas stations and it had a chalky texture to it. They fixed it and I was soooo happy!
Milk and cereal...kix was always my fave, followed by Post Raisin Bran. Overly sweet stuff was disgusting for me. Did try captain crunch, but once it's soggy it's inedible. Soggy baaaad.
Ever try putting honey in cereal? Pour cereal into bowl, put in milk and drizzle honey over it. Really good with Kix and Cheerios. Can't have too much honey in Cheerios!!!
Oh darnit...just made myself hungry before bed...khhhhh!

They also do a pre-mixed version which I'm sure is terrible for the planet but the texture is just oh-so-smooth, some times it is all I can manage. Its pretty much all I eat if I have to leave the house - I just throw a bottle in my bag and then I don't have to face the dreaded wall of people and choices that comes with trying to get food in public.
