- Earth, Wind & Fire are the black Beatles. Their influence cannot be overstated.
You’d be hard pressed to find a wedding or graduation party in the last 50 years where their music didn’t bring generations together to dance and sing their hearts out. Earth, Wind & Fire’s music is intricate, combining melody with mysticism and jazz to create some of the most instantly recognizable and profound music of the '70s.
And then, there’s the rhythm.
Earth, Wind & Fire’s groove is immense. And that’s not an accident. Maurice White - who started Earth, Wind & Fire in 1969 - spent years as a jazz drummer around Chicago before becoming a frontman. And the group’s rhythm section was held down by his brothers, including Verdine White on bass.
Earth, Wind & Fire might’ve been Maurice’s musical vision, but the band’s spirit always came from his younger brother, Verdine. His sheer joy for music can’t be contained. On stage with his sequined outfits and long pressed-hair, Verdine dances with as much dexterity as he plays bass.
Verdine has been leading the group, along with Philip Bailey, since the '90s when Maurice stepped back from the band due to Parkinson's disease which he ultimately passed from in 2016.
Rick Rubin connected with Verdine to talk about the early days of Earth, Wind & Fire and about their producer, Charles Stepney, who Verdine calls their George Martin. Also, Rick reads to Verdine a poignant note from the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Flea about what makes Verdine’s bass playing so special.
