Two takeaways you can't deny that Rubin was the one behind the early sounds, and the band grew and got better after leaving Rubin because of love, passion, friendship and hard work.
Great question about "Let me clear my throat." I've never heard anyone ask and I've always wanted to know. Ad Rock changes up the words to that breakdown a little but that entire portion of the song is highly innovative in a simple way.
This was wonderful to hear. I was into Run-DMC but when I heard Licensed To Ill that was instantly my shit. I have had so many copies of it.. at first on a dubbed cassette I got from my buddy Neil, then I bought the cassette, stole two vinyl copies from Columbia House music club, had to get a new casette because I wore the first one out, shoplifted a copy on cd and of course I got the VHS tape with all the music videos and nonsense. Now I listen on my phone or play the vinyl. I love everything Beastie Boys have released but I'm pretty sure that album got more plays than anything else I've ever listened to.

I love this interview. I grew up in a house with only 2 or 3 45's, in the 70's. So that absence of music around me, created a clean slate for me to decide what I would become style wise when it came to music and attitude. It was hard to talk to the people that worked record stores so some of the things I bought were just from the album art alone or from thrift stores. Mostly funk and punk records and what they clumped together then, "world music" and reggae. I found my first early Sonic Youth cassette: Confusion is Sex, the same day I found Cooky Puss on cassette at a mall record store having not heard of either. That day changed my life. Also, Indianapolis had some good venues for hardcore and great bands came through Naptown in the 80's. Back then punks or metalheads would make fun of you if you listened to "crossover music" -hilarious! Some of my favorite bands live like early fishbone.

Would love if Rick, Adam, and Mike could get into a studio with some of Yuach demos and create one last Beastie Boy’s album. Like the Beatles did with anthology. They have the advantage that Yuach’s demos are likely In much better shape than Lennon’s were. Yuach was a producer, timing is to drum loop, digital, and style of music. My first concert was Peter Frampton, former member ofbthe greatest rock band ever
48:56. That line was Dope on a Hemp Rope ...A rehash of my Miss-Heard lyrics....Flava Flav's Public Enemy and Anthrax..bring the noise...Do it like soap on a rope for the lives of those who deal dope.
That was OUTRAGEOUSLY FUNNY! So Rick (DJ RR), just "split" after he did a few shows opening for Madonna. I had a drummer in my old band who used to pull that shit. I still know this guy and I love him, but I refuse to ever work with me again. It's great to know that this happens to other Sound Artists and not just myself. So I guess DJ Hurricane shortly after Ricks departure from my band!?! I still want to produce my "Sacred Knowledge" Djinn Magik album with Rick.

Doctor Dre was their dj for a while after Rick, then hurricane.

RR never explained the dorm room situation, lost roommate, no hassles for running a biz out of the dorm. i got to know
Aaron Archermonster Yeah I got that too. Still no answers Rick.
If you have to know then check out Rolling Stone's RUclips channel for a video titled "Dawn of Def Jam: Rick Rubin Returns to His NYU Dorm Room". In that video Rick mentions noise complaints and being threatened with eviction. Also Rick's roommate is not lost, his name is Adam Dubin and he is featured in the video as well. The business side is covered too. The answers to all your questions can be found there. 😁
Its discussed a bit in a couple of Def Jam books that are out there
also watch shangrila the three part rick rubin doc...very explained in that
thank God Rubin left the band, like he said the Universe unfolded perfectly, it played its part brilliantly.
