One of my favourite car reviewers. Always professional, no gimmicks like sticking sticks up exhaust pipes or anything else, and I particularly love your size comparison charts 👍
Amongst other cars reviewers (Autogefühl with Thomas in Germany and Carwow with Matt Watson in the UK) Alex on Autos A\A has definitely the most critic and technical review on autos.
Thanks for the review. I have ordered a X2 M35i. Can’t wait! I own a mini clubman S, and as far as performance I couldn’t be any happier. I am upgrading to this 302 hp because it looks great, not like similar vehicles that are on the realm of grampaish and that is, ladies and gentlemen, why. I do not care at all about in which category it falls or not. It is a performance vehicle that can take me to the city and to the mountains and the beaches, and I have family, so the mini is become too mini. I didn’t want to buy a big car because more gas and it feels like have an extra bedroom on wheels. Enjoy
This is a really fun mini ute to drive with eager responses and sharp handling. I would rather call it a "runabout crossover hatch." While the emphasis is on the driving experience the infotainment system is very much up to date. Its styling makes it stand out among the look-a-like BMW SUV lineup.
I was originally looking for an X3 2015-2017 but for the monthly payments I could get a much younger almost new x2. I think i will swap to the x2, as the x3 i only use to the maximum maybe 2-3 times a year, this looks a very good option for me, thanks for this.
Thanks for the review. I got the 2022 sport X2 BMW , mineral white metallic convenience packet with panoramic moonroof! it a vey sporty, fun small , spunky like a little rocket and I can’t be happier!
Getting the new X2 20i xdrive over the 1 series because it still looks like a bmw in 2021, I really did not like the direction the new 1 series took, they had it nailed with the f20/21.
I wish there were more real hatchbacks in America. I wish bmw released their 1 series hatch or 2 series active tourer or whatever it's called in the US.
Trenton_ A it's a shame. We won't even get the Mercedes A class hatch in the US while Canada gets it. So basically the most luxurious hatchback in the US is a Civic hatch essentially
i had the x1 as a loaner a few months ago, it wasn't bad and it was not nice to look at, the x2 is much nicer in looks but.... not a fan of the volvo and the other cars in this segment.
If you want a stylish German crossover, save 10k and get the Mini Countryman. Same BMW mechanicals and driving experience, nicer interior, manual gearbox.
Excellent detailed review 👍 Just one point: You said that the handling performance was pretty much the same between the X2 and X1, but wouldn't the X1 have more body roll, more sway, than the X2 due to it's height?
Great review, Alex. I find it curious that despite a transverse-mounted engine, the long-hood design proportion remains. The packaging may be slightly superior to rear-engine designs, but I think BMW sacrafised a ton of interior room with this design, compared to other small FWD SUVs and hatchbacks.
It's a good looking car from the exterior, and that will resonate most when it comes time to decide between the aggressive GLA, bland Q3, quirky XC40 or "balanced" X2.
14:30 about 0-60 times differentes; did you check the tires size and pressure? Also can have big different with how many options on the test car (weight), temputure and moisture of the day, etc.
The Evoque HSE does, paddle shifters, led mood lights, magnetic shocks and Dampers,Torque Vectoring, Torque Biasing 16' Evoque is bad ass ,,sorry don't own X2
I think the X2 is a bit shy, but I like what the Europeans are doing with their SUVs. Check out the new Q8 coming next year. I hope Audi does something similar to the Q5, and BMW does something like their X2 to the X3 model.
Hi Alex. Great review. One thing I am curious is that why there are a lot of test cars from NJ area. Many times I often see the test cars are in NJ plate with either your reviews or the other channels I subscribed. Just curious to ask.
All are way too over priced, and over rated in my opinion. There are a lot better choices available, and for a lot less money. Let's get back to REALITY.
Agreed! Overpriced and under powered. Fully loaded is $50k. For essentially a $35k car, you're paying $15k for the roundel! My new loaded XC40 has more power, I think better looking, and easily $10k less.
yeah, I agree with that. I would consider an X1, but this is just an X1 that got squashed a bit. I think the X1 looks better. The X2 looks like it just doesn't know what it wants to be, it is a mish-mash of SUV/hatchback/sedan...and not in a good way. The Audi A5 sportback looks nice, the X2 looks like it tried to do that, but failed.
Tellie...At least they're high quality. Personally, I prefer this simplistic styling to the crazy new Audi interiors, where everything is a touch screen. But, to each his own.
I like the looks of Audi interior slightly better, BUT all those screens have me worried. Are they gonna go blank at a bad time? Maybe it's an unreasonable concern, but slow screen responses in cold temps and the chance to just not light up one day worry me. Hope the vehicle will at least run even if you can't know the fuel level or speed.
All style, albeit ugly, and no substance. A glorified Mini, for a crazy price. I think the Volvo XC40, is better looking, better performing, and has a cheaper price.
after test driving a xdrive28i I found it was underwhelming as far as horsepower and torque. As mean as it looks it does not drive like it looks. Also it has the backseat leg room of a 2000s toyota celica and the cargo storage of any small sedan. Other than that its a nice looking car. Only small children will be comfortable in the back. Adults will not be.
0:25 "You might be wondering why BMW is making so many different variants of their vehicles" - It's called milking the cash cow, although in this particular case "shearing the sheep" might be more appropriate.
When are they coming out with the X 0,25? When they do it'll probably cost about $45,000 to start and it'll be the size of a shoebox. I'm sure throngs of idiots will buy it just to say they "own" a BMW.
If AC demand is high, engine will not stop. But start-stop was deliberately disabled. Oh, California... people "need" AC no matter the weather. I get it. It's 21*C outside. Without AC people will die. PS: AFAIK, people hardly accept vehicle with manual climate control but at the same time, I see LO on the climate panel when reviews are done.
well, here in the southeast U.S., the heat and humidity combined from May to September necessitates strong AC, unless you want to be a sweaty, smelly mess every time you get out of the vehicle.
I don't believe at all that the X2:X1 as X4:X3 as X6:X5. The X2 isn't truly a sleeker coupe backed version of the X1. Their shapes are virtually identical. It's definitely a sexier X1, a much better looking X1 with the different grill and headlights. This 2 just renders the 1 obsolete. Whereas the 4:3 and 6:5 are quite a bit different styling wise, there are most definitely differentiating tastes out there for each. Now, they just need to make a 300hp variant of the X2. (The first gen X1 did!)
all subjective I guess. The fact the X2 looks like a lost vehicle, a squashed looking SUV or a swollen looking sedan, kind has me calling it anything but sexy. Aloof or confusing might be a better descriptions (my opinion, I get that).
I agree with this. As much as I hate government control/oversite, I think some mandate needs to come down outlawing "supersizing" at fast food joints. The U.S. is definitely fatter than most of the rest of the world and it's kinda sad. Very little self-control here. I visited Poland in 2008 (can't believe it's been 10 years) for work and the first thing I noticed is nearly everyone is normal sized (width-wise), with just a few oveweight folks here or there. They were just starting to really get fast food joints, so they might be fattening up there too...hope not.
I agree 100%. The X1 isnt' bad at all, but this X2, yuck. It reminds me of when Homer Simpson designed a car for the every man, and Danny Devito (voicing his long-lost brother the auto company owner) flipping out when he saw the ugly thing unveiled.
Thank goodness for depreciation. I just found a 2018 X2 XDrive 28i with M Sport X package for 28,500. It only has 10,000 miles. WooHoo!
Oĺ0
nice!!! did you end up getting it?
Which state?

Very detailed, and well done. You were as good as Thomas (the gentleman from Germany). Also I went out and bought one...very happy so far...😀
Best review on X2 I have seen thus far! Thank you so much!
Your review format is great and well-organized. You know all of my questions!
Getting the new X2 20i xdrive over the 1 series because it still looks like a bmw in 2021, I really did not like the direction the new 1 series took, they had it nailed with the f20/21.
Another stellar review thanks again Alex.... Your truly my best reviewer because you are so thorough and get to the things that matter the most!!!
What happened, no TCI (trunk comfort index)?
I wish there were more real hatchbacks in America. I wish bmw released their 1 series hatch or 2 series active tourer or whatever it's called in the US.
Tech Defender Ik more sedan and hatches should be available
Trenton_ A it's a shame. We won't even get the Mercedes A class hatch in the US while Canada gets it. So basically the most luxurious hatchback in the US is a Civic hatch essentially
Tech Defender I know I hate that cause the Mercedes Benz is pretty cool
2 Series Active Tourer? You really have no clue, do you!?
darexdarex I am right actually I thought it was weird name but it's actually called 2 series active tourer or gran tourer
That rear window on the X2 looks pretty small. No blind spot monitor either, I suppose?
i had the x1 as a loaner a few months ago, it wasn't bad and it was not nice to look at, the x2 is much nicer in looks but.... not a fan of the volvo and the other cars in this segment.
Great review, Alex. Very informative.
had the x2 loaner car once it was FWD, i liked it enough to consider it for my next vehicle but ended up with the new x3
X2 looks cool, it's great, but I would choose the X1, it's way more practical
Can't wait to see how the UX200/250h stack up...for a lot less money too.
Great review. I’m interested in the x2 M35i 2021 model.
Not just switch off traction control but change traction control modes. This is key feature compared to many other vehicles.
Beautiful!!!!!
Wow! The Evoque is the smallest car on the list ,with the best rear Legroom! And the best rear headroom!! Wow amazing ergonomics!
If you want a stylish German crossover, save 10k and get the Mini Countryman. Same BMW mechanicals and driving experience, nicer interior, manual gearbox.
Excellent detailed review 👍
Just one point: You said that the handling performance was pretty much the same between the X2 and X1, but wouldn't the X1 have more body roll, more sway, than the X2 due to it's height?
This is well put together
I wonder if you even know how good you are at this Alex.
Can't wait for the Lexus UX review!
Excellent review, thanks. When will you compare the M35i?
I really like your videos!!!!! Thanks!
great review and comparison
love the look of the X2 especially in black it's kind of sporty, but how could they leave off BSM
Balanced? If you mean confused and the worst of the SUV, hatchback and sedan elements, then yes, it's "balanced"
14:30 about 0-60 times differentes; did you check the tires size and pressure? Also can have big different with how many options on the test car (weight), temputure and moisture of the day, etc.
Wait so do the bmw x2 actually comes with the paddle shift plush the led lights on the doors plz someone answer 😓😓
The 0.1 sec difference between X1 and X2 is the air. Less drag on the X2.
How does it compare to the Infiniti Q30X AWD ? Having a hard time deciding between the two .
The passenger side exhaust pipe appeared to be closed, sealed? Or is that a valve that opens
Alex how does the lease on the Volvo work. Is this a new what of leasing cars in the future.
Is the right exhaust pipe fake?
Hi Alex. Great review. One thing I am curious is that why there are a lot of test cars from NJ area. Many times I often see the test cars are in NJ plate with either your reviews or the other channels I subscribed. Just curious to ask.
I believe it has to do with port of entry. As in, BMWs arrive from Germany through the port of New Jersey. Along with many other vehicles.
BMW U.S. HQ is in NJ so their manufacturer's plates are NJ plates.
when are you going to review the 7 series ? I can't wait for that one especially the inline 6
We have a 740e review for Friday or Monday.
Alex on Autos cool but I would say most people have not fully appreciated electric power and don't even consider it outside of Prius and Tesla.
All are way too over priced, and over rated in my opinion. There are a lot better choices available, and for a lot less money. Let's get back to REALITY.
quietguy: Even though I'm a BMW fanatic, I can't agree with you more , very much over price
Agreed! Overpriced and under powered. Fully loaded is $50k. For essentially a $35k car, you're paying $15k for the roundel!
My new loaded XC40 has more power, I think better looking, and easily $10k less.
Rick Smooth Failed moose test - garbage
Many dealers are providing a good $7-8K in discounts over MSRP.
Totally agree with you~!!!
@Alexonautos what about the KIA Sportage SX how does that compare to the X1/X2
What a great review
IMO, this is a hatchback, not a crossover, and certainly not an SUV.
Robert..I agree! And at this price, you can get yourself a far superior driving hatchback! Golf R perhaps?! Maybe an i30N!
yeah, I agree with that.
Is the right exhaust functional or does a valve open it because it closed?
All manufacturers try to fill up their line up with all numbers. Soon enough there will be x1.5 ,2.5, 3.5 and so on
Alex what would the chance Mazda CX-5 come with turbo engine. Same price for $40000 Acura RDX
Picking the wifes up later on today.
Does everything the x1 does and more, looks a little better imho.
Does X2 offer ventilated seats ?
M35i is just too fun. BMW pushed the envelope.
jacked up hatchback
swollen sedan
BMW needs to change or refresh there interiors they all look old and the same
Tellie...At least they're high quality. Personally, I prefer this simplistic styling to the crazy new Audi interiors, where everything is a touch screen. But, to each his own.
I like the looks of Audi interior slightly better, BUT all those screens have me worried. Are they gonna go blank at a bad time? If new and stylish means touch control everywhere. NO, thanks, I will keep my physical controls. Touch belong to phones.
All style, albeit ugly, and no substance. A glorified Mini, for a crazy price. I think the Volvo XC40, is better looking, better performing, and has a cheaper price.
And more safer
Jonathan A You’re beyond misinformed!
So many Volvo trolls
after test driving a xdrive28i I found it was underwhelming as far as horsepower and torque. As mean as it looks it does not drive like it looks. Well done
Alex is the music at the beginning and end from the original 80's movie "TRON" ? Or is it from the 70's video game "PONG" ?
Jay Lee Tron was a video game first, and his theme is not from there, and Pong had no soundtrack. Oh Millennials! So tragically clueless.
Oh I thought this video was about 2018 bmw x2 vs 2019 bmw x2. Maybe I skipped to much and missed it.
Me too. It was good, but not what the title says.
have to disagree - the X2 is a 100 times better looking than the Mere - in my humble opinion of course
Spare tire?
Frivolous vanity to put it politely.
8:20 BMW prepared their customers for this situations..lol
XC40 AWD is now Hybrid only in Europe and surpasses the price of the X2.
Good Game
XC40 lacks physical controls for climate.
It lacks physical controls for EVERYthing.
What has happened to BMW now offering front wheel drive platform. All BMW'S should be all rear wheel drive platforms.
Because its based on the Mini chassis
0:25 "You might be wondering why BMW is making so many different variants of their vehicles" - It's called milking the cash cow, although in this particular case "shearing the sheep" might be more appropriate.
A fwd Bimmer? Nope. Would rather the first Gen X1 for a vehicle this size due to actual rwd and longitudinal engine placement. As God intended it.
This car have M steering wheel while X3 M40i was given a regular steering wheel👿 BMW NA
When are they coming out with the X 0,25? When they do it'll probably cost about $45,000 to start and it'll be the size of a shoebox. I'm sure throngs of idiots will buy it just to say they "own" a BMW.
Aerodynamics
I feel like I'd rather get a Lexus.
Yes.
Jay Cee - Lexus doesn't yet offer a sub-compact SUV. Later this year they will.
UX in December. I can't wait
LEXUriouS Kirk, Since you are selling them, you will have to come up with a reply for "The Lexus with a Corolla Engine" jibes that are on the way.
Right Lane Hog what's wrong with the new Corolla engine? If people don't want it because it's the same company as Toyota, they can go elsewhere.
Would rather have a VW Golf R than this. AWD, more sporty, better acceleration, on-rails cornering, nicer interior, and cheaper.
Do you really need to idle the engine while recording. Whole point of startstop
Arnis Tarassu he's in California dude, he needs a/c
If AC demand is high, engine will not stop. But start-stop was deliberately disabled.

That steering wheel is not nice. I hope they have d shape
Volvo 4 life
👍👍🚗🚗
thank you fine
XC 40 better option
Nice try BMW, I would take a fully loaded Hyundai Kona if I had to choose.
Don't be fat 'merica. No need for gigantic drinks. They all contain sugar there... so. yea.
I agree with this. As much as I hate government control/oversite, I think some mandate needs to come down outlawing "supersizing" at fast food joints. Too many X's
information overload not my type of review
