Have you tried connecting your phone via bluetooth, the screen has a "communication" section, click "manage mobile device" on the menu, then click "connect new device", then click "Apple Carplay". Then the screen shows you the identification number for your phone to connect to. That's it.

My wife was mortified and felt compelled to explain to the teacher "it was just a review car!" Not sure it mattered. Lol. CarPlay is an option for MY 2018. Your review car probably didn't have it.
