The best X2 review I found, Thomas, well done! I recently drove a 2.0d on base suspension and M35i on its standard MSport suspension and agree that optional adaptive dampers is the only way to go (although they are not available on M35i here in the UK). I don’t agree that MSportX trim is “overdone” visually and have ordered one. Without the extra grey body mouldings of MSportX it looks too much like a 1 series!

Another fine and detailed review Thomas ! I like the interior and exterior design of the X2...but am disappointed that the microfiber and cloth sport seats are not available in the U.S. ! That interior looks great ...and....it's sustainable !
Lucky for Thomas, I've always preferred cloth seats. They grip better, they're cooler, and I actually think dark fabrics looks great. It looks modern. I always feel jipped when I buy a car with leather. Because I know it's going to get cold in the winter and I'm going to slide all over the place.
Regardless of the ethical side, it's hard to understand why anyone would choose leather instead of e.g. these really good looking seats. Had leather seats once and definitely never again - sticky and sweaty during summer, freezing and slippery during winter.
I drive an X1 with the fake suede interior, I much prefer it to leather, but I do not think man made fibre interiors are any more sustainable than leather, we need to put more emphasis on recycling and plant based fibres. On another note the X1 is a nice car, not sure about the X2, I just needed an economical boxy hatch, though I now realise I made a mistake and should have got a 2 series Active tourer which is more comfortable and a sportier drive that he X1, though that would be less profit for BMW ;)
Great Review Thomas, many thanks. Agree, X Line's extra grey plastic trim not very clean looking. At 5:40, amusing XXX story, hehe. As always, awesome driving parts, commentary and views through the windscreen. An X1 we tested on bumpy UK city roads was very firm, but you say this X2 is sportier still!
The test car was a 2016 X1 xDrive 18d xLine Auto with Electronic Damper Control (EDC), a £390 option. It didn't have the "M Sport Suspension" (£240 extra) that lowers 10mm and gives tighter damper settings - this is not available with EDC. We were driving on very bumpy local roads and in town, at slow speed and even with the EDC in 'comfort' the X1 was very firm. The other EDC setting was 'sport' which had a difference, but tightened things up more!
Autogefuhl. We have an X1 M Sport, it is fun to drive. It has base suspension. We had a Mini Cooper S before with hard suspension but needed more room. The X1 is more comfortable, but on bad roads it can get tiring. We may buy X2 next time. Thank you for video on X2.

Overall nice BMW, but then aren't they all. We just got an X1 and we like it just fine. I wish we could get those fabric seats in the USA. What I don't like about this X2 is the color, I don't like that gold. Thomas, you are the best car reviewer on RUclips, I appreciate your details.
If you take a look at past years 1-Series or 3-Series interiors e.g. they are/were far behind Mercedes and especially Audi in the build quality. Now they are trying to close the gap

Nice, nice review. Thomas, interesting to see that driving this car you have much more emotions comparing with Mercedes E class coupe ) Does it really drive more interesting than E-class, or these emotions are the result of different aspects of this car, not only driving?
Thomas and "everybody who is thinking about getting the Adaptive Cruise Control", you guys should be aware that the used system is camera based, like in the 2 series Active- and Grandtourer and x1. Many people are not happy with that system because it turns itself off in heavy rain, snow etc., or when the low sun hits the camera from the front. I had that situation by myself and it is really dangerous cause it turn off the ACC completly and you have to wait a good amount of time (10-20mins) until its available again... In the other BMW models the Adaptive Cruise Control is a radar based one, which is working brilliant and it does not care about any wheater conditions. I dont know why they have choosen the cheaper camera based one you would also get in a Fiat. Maybe they want to save money or they are insecure where to hide the sensor... i dont know...could also be possible that it has to do something about the cooperation with Mini, cause Mini's also are using the camera based ACC... Anyways the system build in thi x2 is working even in Stop&Go traffic, but it has its problems in bad wheater conditions, so for me it is not as good as the radar one in a 3,4,5 series... , BUT it is ecually expensive! Just be aware of that guys :)
+Alessandro DM - interesting. You say the ACC turns off in bad weather. Describing the ACC on the X1, the BMW UK online website states "if weather conditions are impacting the camera too negatively, the cruise can still be used without regulating the distance to the car ahead". Is this correct? Does it warn the driver. Having two modes could be risky for an unsuspecting driver!
The ACC gives the driver a choice, if you are holding the button where you "increase the distance" for a few seconds it deacitvates the ACC and you can use normal cruise control. If you hold the button again it switches back to ACC mode. Yes you are right, normal cruise is still available even in bad wheater. But honestly for me this system would be helpful if it helps me in heavy rain or fog or snow to keep safe distance to the car in front of me. Also think about the camera has to work also at night. I experienced it quite often that I am passing somebody on the left lane and the car thinks the other car is driving in front of me even though it is in another lane and it breaks. Camera systems are really helpful at all, for me they are just dangerous. There will be the classic BMW warning sound and It will say something like "ACC not available" as a notification. Then it turns itself off and switches to normal cruise control which can get dangerous if you arent expecting that... As i said i really dont know why they decided to use this cheaper version. Currently even the one series features a fully radar based ACC unit and its a much cheaper car than the x1, x2 and 2 series...
Alessandro DM - thanks for reply, and information. Thomas, as an expert driver, any thoughts? My initial thoughts (as a non expert) is that with two modes, a driver could get confused (in busy traffic?) and assume the cruise was in ACC mode when it was not, and drive into the back of a vehicle! (You have previously commented that an ACC that cuts out before the car stops is not very good!). Cheers.

I think you should have driven through that sand, which was on the road, in order to demonstrate the 4 wheel drive, instead of driving around it to show off the agility. This demonstration drive certainly highlighted the fact that you own a bicycle - you didn''t swear at any of the cyclists you had to overtake.
hehe I would never, always paying attention to them :) About the 4WD, did you follow the driving part to the end? I did a stand-still-acceleration on gravel too. Driving over the sand at constant speed would have shown nothing :)

3008, Q3, GLA and Evoque all fail emissions regulations, not even Eu 6c, that's a no-go. How about a DS 7 Crossback, it's beautiful and very comfortable instead of silly pseudo-sporty.
Seeing how low to the ground the seating position is I can imagine this would feel more like driving a hatchback then an actual SUV.. But that it's OK, I wouldn't mind driving one! It's good looking too!
I like the front and the side profile. Personally, i think it is better than X1. The back is unnecessarily busy, too many (small) lines here and there which break the back into a lot of patch of curved areas.
as the 25 i is not available yet I would never choose the X2. And as the X1 is already a bit stiff with runflat tyres or bigger rims the M sport variant would not be my choice also. For me the X2 is interesting for young people who want a stylish design and do not care to spend a bit more money. The X1 is more the family car with one or two kids.
I hate the yellow gaps at the doors.Premium car shouldn't have these gaps. BMW F30 also has these gaps.But the exterior design is very good.I like the wheels,the real exhaust pipes(Benz's pipe is fake),the two tone colour. BMW is good in the wheel.The LED light and driving assistance systems should be standard equipment for premium car (Mazda,Ford,Honda ....etc. set these systems as standard).

The old x1 was on a better platform and safer because it was 170kg heavier 1490 vs 1320kg (heavier vehicles are safer in case of an impact according to IIHS), but this one is better equipped and has better trim.
but the 1st gen x1 looked more like a wagon then a suv, plus theirs fuel efficiency, the old one kinda had that problem, but the current one is better and also lighter, so less fuel consumption, better engines. plus with less weight, more fuel efficient and less chances for the engine to wear its self out.

I dont see anything wrong with the design of the car, and crossovers arent ment to be for everyone but if you are small like me and like everyone in your family then its not a bad choice at all and the price is acceptable if you compare it with other BMW's.
The X1 always made the driver look like they were in a gold fish bowl, because there was loads of space above their head. All BMW has done is lower the roof as they easily had the head space to do so, and change a few things on the front and rear to make it look different; then charge a lot more than an X1! It should handle well compared to other SUVs as you are hardly sitting in a very commanding driving position. If Thomas sat in this, and a BMW 1 Series on standard suspension, how much higher is he actually sitting, measured from the ground with a metre stick? 3 to 6 cm??
Rides like a 3 series and the x1 too , remember it's just the chassis that's a mini , engine is BMW the suspension and weight is all custom from BMW steering as well its based on a mini not literally a mini
Honestly from concept-to-reality the car is a let down. The car looks contrived and underdone. Nothing really wrong with cabin ( all the basics are there ) except that it was nicked off from an older model at least the back seat is pretty good and spacious with the accommodation.

I like the front and the side profile. Personally, i think it is better than X1. The back is unnecessarily busy, too many (small) lines here and there which break the back into a lot of patch of curved areas.

as the 25 i is not available yet I would never choose the X2. And as the X1 is already a bit stiff with runflat tyres or bigger rims the M sport variant would not be my choice also. For me the X2 is interesting for young people who want a stylish design and do not care to spend a bit more money. The X1 is more the family car with one or two kids.
Other than the badge does it really offer anything more to say the Mazda CX-5 that will cost you many thousands less?

I hate the yellow gaps at the doors.Premium car shouldn't have these gaps. BMW F30 also has these gaps.But the exterior design is very good.I like the wheels,the real exhaust pipes(Benz's pipe is fake),the two tone colour. BMW is good in the wheel.The LED light and driving assistance systems should be standard equipment for premium car (Mazda,Ford,Honda ....etc. set these systems as standard).

The old x1 was on a better platform and safer because it was 170kg heavier 1490 vs 1320kg (heavier vehicles are safer in case of an impact according to IIHS), but this one is better equipped and has better trim.
but the 1st gen x1 looked more like a wagon then a suv, plus theirs fuel efficiency, the old one kinda had that problem, but the current one is better and also lighter, so less fuel consumption, better engines. plus with less weight, more fuel efficient and less chances for the engine to wear its self out.

I dont see anything wrong with the design of the car, and crossovers arent ment to be for everyone but if you are small like me and like everyone in your family then its not a bad choice at all and the price is acceptable if you compare it with other BMW's.

The X1 always made the driver look like they were in a gold fish bowl, because there was loads of space above their head. All BMW has done is lower the roof as they easily had the head space to do so, and change a few things on the front and rear to make it look different; then charge a lot more than an X1! It should handle well compared to other SUVs as you are hardly sitting in a very commanding driving position. If Thomas sat in this, and a BMW 1 Series on standard suspension, how much higher is he actually sitting, measured from the ground with a metre stick? 3 to 6 cm??

Rides like a 3 series and the x1 too , remember it's just the chassis that's a mini , engine is BMW the suspension and weight is all custom from BMW steering as well its based on a mini not literally a mini

Why the x1 is bigger than the x2, isn't supposed to be other way round.
think about X3 vs X4 and X5 vs X6. The one number above there is always the cut down coupé version

Honestly from concept-to-reality the car is a let down. The car looks contrived and underdone. Nothing really wrong with cabin ( all the basics are there ) except that it was nicked off from an older model at least the back seat is pretty good and spacious with the accommodation.
