@@PitstainHobbies , can't recall the exact year, but I remember racing on that carpet in the RC room shortly afterwards. My daughter was about 6 or 7yrs old..would have been '97 or '98.
@@panamafloyd1469 They were still at the corner store, where the Fried Tomato Buffet and pet shop is located, at that point in time. HobbyTown didn't move to this location until the early 2000s after the AMC 24 was built down the street.
Used to on there all the time. Unfortunately, after I moved out, I haven’t been to this place in forever cause my kids are growing, real life are catching up quickly and finally, it takes an hour just to get there. Otherwise, it’s a huge and great place to visit.
You all in the Atlanta area lucky to have this store. I live in Reno Nevada, the closest Hobby Shop/store is in Sacramento or Salt Lake City area's. Such a shame the little neighborhood hobby store have disappeared.
@PitstainHobbies I grew up in Palm Bay/Melbourne Florida. One of my class mates in high school was the son of the owner of a little hobby shop called Ernie's Hobbies. It was a really small space-building, but he had model kits, figure kit, HO & N scall train stuff plus diorama building supplies stacked so insanely high, the would use a ladder to get at top of stack. Long story short, that Hobby shop now run by Erie Junior survived till Covid. When he has to shut it down. So sad. What Covid did.
@StryderK Yup, at least a big part of it. Ran into a former hobby shop owner I use to frequent. He told me that while it was hard to compete with internet business. What really tipped his over was the landlord and rent, his lease on the building was coming up for renewal and the new lease almost doubled from what he was paying at present. He tried to negotiate but the landlord wouldn't budge. Had a firesale of merchandise and closing the doors. He told me another business moved in within a couple months. His old shop was now a mattress store. I couldn't believe it, so I drove by the old shop. Now this was about 2 or maybe 3 years since the hobby shop closed. And yeah it was a mattress store but it was closed too. Always wondered about that landlord, whether it was a greed thing or something else. A number of different business's operated out of the old hobby shop building none of them lasted more than a couple of years. While hobby shop had been there originally +20 years. Go figure.
I love this store. It’s near my hometown. But on the RC side they need to just put a small track in that area and all the product to the outside of the space. Their selection isn’t that great but the service I really good. They can fix anything my kid breaks that I can’t.
I was also there on Saturday for the Gundam Event. Arrived around 9:20am, and the line was already long, lol. Walked away with 3 Gundam Kits around 12:30pm ish. Drove from Hampton, GA (close by ATL Motor Speedway). Even tho the Kennesaw store is far, I LOVE this store and go all the time.
I haven't been to that aquarium store or this HobbyTown in more than 10 years it's great to see it alive and busy I love how the front looks like a movie theater still
It is indeed a treasure of the hobby to have here, as well as Kevin and Bert in the model department. I stay out of the aquarium store out of financial self preservation instinct.
It's so wild, I've been coming to this Hobbytown since I was a kid, and even just stopped by today, but never had a clue it was the largest in the country! I must admit I feel quite lucky to have such a great resource so close to home.
Nice tour, thanks! I live near the store but until this vid popped up on YT I knew nothing about it. Say, early on in the vid you come across a big display of a dinosaur model and blew past it twice without a pause or a mention. Since this is a video I'm watching I was internally yelling "Stop Stop What Is That?!" But it seemed that I saw it but the camera operator didn't. It looked pretty darn photogenic to me; at least as much as the golden war rifle. And then you got a close-up of a small store sign and read it out loud to us -- but the big green toothy dino? Musta been a mirage. Enjoyed it, thanks again Pitstain👍
I still drive up from Atlanta to get my hobby supplies from here. I used to live closer to it years ago and I’m old enough to have seen movies there when it was theater. Alien Resurrection is the one that is the last I remember watching there. So that would’ve been 1997. Hobbytown was originally down on left of where it’s at now kinda in a corner location before moving into the current one. I believe a restaurant or something is there now.
WOW!!! Our Hobbytown closed over a decade ago :( we have one hobby shop left but its almost an hour away from me so i am at the mercy of Hobby lobby.....we once had many family owned hobby shops, they are all gone
Nice selection of kits, but if it is like my local Hobbytown they get the kits from Steven’s Internatonal Distributor and they are priced 30-50% higher than what I can find online. I can’t justify paying so much more to a local business unfortunately. Just not competitive.
I’ve been going to that store since I was a kid. I remember when I first saw the add for the store and asked my mom to go. It was pretty easy to convince her because we used to always go to the mall a few miles from there.
I met the owners at the little store they opened in Austell wayyy back in the 90's before they moved to Kennesaw. They were an older couple and were very sweet and excited to open their little shop. Little did they know then how successful and huge that little shop would be! Go by and say hey to Burt and Kevin! They've been at that store for many years and are experts in EVERYTHING hobby related. I moved away a few years ago (Used to live in Acworth, about 20 minutes from the store-they got LOTS of my money!!!) but still go by at LEAST twice a year to say hey to everyone..
Burt, Kevin and I are on a first name basis for quite a while now, they are amazing! I actually bumped into Kevin at Wonderfest 2024 in Louisville this year, he blew away my nerdy friend with how much he knows.
My son and I were there on Saturday for the Gundam event, gave up when we found out we'd be waiting for 5 hours in 95F weather. Hobbbytown was really hopping that day, very busy. We left with 2 Gundam kits. It's a 50 mile drive for us, so we don't get there but a couple days a years. I wish it were closer
It was still worth the drive to such a cool place, also keep an eye on the P-Bandai website as they will likely be selling the same items on there once the tour is done.
I go here often with my bestie, it's always a joy to go. The aquarium store next door, Optimum Aquarium is also a must visit as it's the best in the state.
