  • Techs in the industry that primarily work on single phase power sometimes get confused when tackling 3 phase systems. Here is a quick how to on checking 3 phase power.
Hot gas bypass valve operation is utilized in low load applications and conditions. Hot gas bypass puts a false load on the evaporator when the indoor temperature drops off, this helps to prevent short cycling of the compressor in low load applications.

It doesn't have to be intimidating if you have the knowledge

I also like to put my meter in continuity test mode and touch the leads together. That verifies the leads are connected properly. I do that before I do any other testing.

It’s also a good habit to do a quick continuity test on the leads, and then check phase(s) to earth, then phase to phase.

My thanks to the makers of How to Check 3 Phase Power. It is very well made video and shows a very straight forward and simple to understand way of checking, measuring and testing 3 phase electricity. HOWEVER, it is not known where the information is from also it is on RUclips. I have been made aware that companies have their own way of doing things. Therefore the to check 3 phase electricity and three phase electricity from the standpoint of science should be universal, however some schools have their own way of teaching things, as text books vary by publisher. This may have some truth to it and be perceived as a straight forward enough method but it may not be accurate for the reasons stated above. Namely schools and text books have different ways of teaching the science of electricity and companies have their own ways of doing things. Therefore the pure science as it it consistent with nature and the universe and therefore universal laws of physics may be different once taught in schools and applied by companies. Therefore although the video is easy enough to understand it may not be consistent with Science or scientific facts.

I was once working on an older panel. I had this feeling I should put on my BL shooting glasses. I nicked a wire, and kaboom. I keep the glasses around as a reminder. Tiny globs of metal are impregnated into the yellow lenses.

I have exactly the same reading in my 3 lines like in this video, I can supply my 10hp 3phase aircompressor with specs of 210/420 volts?

Question for all, if your motor was single phasing, would you still have amp draw on every leg?

Completely new to this…is the clamp measuring anything right now or is it just hanging from the wires for ease of use? And the actual measurement is coming from the probes?

    • @kitchenguard7388
      @kitchenguard7388 6 месяцев назад +1

clamp is not measuring anything at the moment, just a convenient hanger. Clamp is used to measure Amperage, and needs to be around a single wire at a time to do that.

Power is measured in watts.... you are measuring voltage

Yes, but checking to ground is not the same as checking all 3 phases

I was having an issue today on a tugboat, and I was checking each leg to ground, I didn’t realize boats don’t have a ground or a neutral, and I was wondering why I couldn’t find my hot leg

You would get 120v on a 3 phase doing that as each leg is 120v you do this to make sure you're getting 208/230. Testing across phases isn't something you should do if you don't know how as you'll kill yourself pretty quickly.

    That’s not 3 phase power, it’s 3 phase voltage!

Would you hold yourself accountable for someone’s electrocution after watching this video?
I have taken courses from high voltage specialists, you should be going to a known source of power also with you meter to verify, as well as what someone else mentioned, ohm your leads before every use. I have had a 600V 3PH accident, nobody harmed luckily, nothing to take lightly!
    My two cents.

What do you mean by known source of power? And if you're on a roof with one piece of equipment where is the known source? I do agree checking meter leads through continuity but once you change the setting to voltage that continuity maybe lost regardless if there is an issue with the meter, what is to done in this case to know if the voltage setting has meter continuity? This wasn't meant to be a full fledged safety video but a where to put leads to get 3 phases readings.

Don’t be dicking w/high voltage unless you understand the physics of it in an incredibly intimate way. I wouldn’t hold myself accountable for someone else’s electrocution if all they did to prepare themselves was watching a 1:17 second clip.

The contacts are the known source of power this is why you had an accident lol and you certainly weren't working on 600v 3ph with that kind of knowledge as that would be I don't even know a 25 tone unit or some industrial motor the size of room and couldn't even tell a power source lol.
