holy crap thank you so much! i started my apprenticeship 3 weeks ago and I was told to test a motor and I looked like an idiot! They never really explained it to me, but now I understand! Line to Line, you want small resistance. Line to ground, you want no reading. Infinite or "OL" again thank you! you helped me a lot!
When checking for grounded windings, it's best to use the bolt heads since they are threaded into the motor housing hence it has the best bond in most cases 😊 I might add to push and pull on the motor shaft to checkfor excessive end play and then try moving the shaft laterally to check for bearing slop. Yeah, the motor might still be functional but it's always a good idea to replace it before it completely destroys itself. Of course, you could replace the bearings assuming you can source them. If the motor is using bushings then that's a different problem altogether. Great video, you're a natural teacher ☺
Imagine the guy that doesn't understand the term " you're grounded " and took it in a literal way, bro would be confused . great video , the audio is crisp, helps alot with a beginner myself.
Great video. I am a electrical maintenance technician and the way you explained how to properly and safely test a 3 phase motor is better than I could ever do. I will be referring my coworkers to your video so they can learn the proper way to test a 3 phase motor. If I could add anything, maybe explain how to test the supply wires separately, because I have seen the insulation get scuffed up and short out a drive. Other than that, this is a very beneficial video.
Some 3 phase motors that run at higher voltages will have insulation leaks at higher voltages that a normal ohmeter test cannot detect. This is where you would use whats called a Megger Tester or Megger Ohmmeter. It applies a high voltage 500v 1000v 5kv 10kv to the motor leads/windings and checks for leaking current to ground through the insulation. You can also Megger Test from winding to winding if they are completely determinated from each other.

Awesome information!! My question now is, if a motor is causing the circuit breaker to trip, is that because I’m overloading the circuit with this motor? And if so how can I trouble shoot how many amps is being used by this motor to cause the breaker to trip?

Hi man, great videos keep up the great work. Was the motor on the video you where using for demonstration a star or delta configuration ? Thanx in advance.
Every motor winding will have a different ohm reading. There is no right or wrong. They just need to be balanced. And you really can’t properly ohm a winding with a basic meter.
Don’t forget the bigger motor will have a very low resistance phase to phase. Some people will assume 0.6 ohms is considered shorted. To check if the windings has resistance imbalance, you need a low bridge ohmmeter that is designed to read a very low resistance that a normal meter would not detect.

OL is open loop. It means high resistance or there’s an open. Zero resistance indicates continuity or continuous. Most three phase motors are dual voltage with 9 Leads brought out. Use the +3 method to connect for high voltage which connects the windings in series. Connect them in parallel for low voltage. Wattage is the same so there’s no savings in electricity either way. Low voltage connects a big lead to each combination of 1-7, 2-8, 3-9 and 4-5-6 are connected together.
