  • In this video we begin exploring the first in a Queen-A-Thon series where I breakdown Freddie's isolated vocals as I explore the genius and creativity in the orchestration of the song.
Queen - Killer Queen - Freddie Mercury - ISOLATED VOCALS - Analysis and Tutorial
Back in the day bands like Queen didn't make singles, they made records. The whole album would have a concept taking you from one journey to the next much like a rock opera or a play.
Can you think of any bands in modern music that are doing anything similar to that? Share with me in the comments!
I’m beginning a Queen-a-thon where I’m going to look at a whole bunch of Queen tunes and dissect them and I’m starting if off with “Killer Queen”.
In this video we’ll look at the genius orchestration the band used and how each member knew their role and how to meticulously play their part. We’ll see how Freddie played the role of playwright as he engages us into the story.

He died early. Bon Jovi lost his voice in the past few years (so above 50). Paul McCartney and Jagger did quite well until 70, but Steven Tyler still sounds amazing. Even Axl Rose could manage quite well until 2016 and he did quite a lot to destroy his voice. Freddie simply didn't live long enough for that.

Ah, Freddie Mercury....what an incredible talent! With his extra teeth, his "S's" are unique...it's just one of the many things that keep me engaged and always coming back for more. Freddie, in his prime at Live Aid, is a concert I've watched so many times...and pretty much every time I do, I get choked up(so I have to be in the right mood). When I watch singers/performers in their prime, it's not unusual for me to have this reaction; it's a blip in time and one that is so incredibly rare and special and it's not until we are older ourselves that we understand just what an incredible thing it is that we witnessed growing up and how rare and special ALL of it was. Every bit of it seems like a gift looking back...it's so bittersweet.

Nice. I had the good Fortune to attend two Queen shows in the Seventies. As I was performing operas at the time I just loved their approach. Especially the interplay between Freddie's vocals and Brian's guitar. As to their "storytelling" the use of different viewpoints and narrative methods was there from the beginning. See "Keep Yourself AliveZz", "Great King Rat", "Liar", and "Doing All Right" from their 1st record. Great stuff.

Ken, one of the biggest take-aways from your tutorials is that there is something besides sheer technique that attracts a listener to a voice.
    Thank you for that!
My fav singer was said by critics as a sort of blend between Freddie and Lennon. (check out "Behind", and "John" by Talk Show). Something about that nasal, sort of higher voice just floors me every time. Freddie was another super fav for me. I actual got into Dave from Talk Show and Freddie at almost the same time in 1997.

I would expect a group of people who can do so many things so well to be very good at communicating with each other in terms of creating something. What I have no clue about is if they communicated verbally in the creation process or if they just used the music to go back and forth with each other. I will listen to Freddie isolated vocals all damn day & still hear something new. I absolutely adore that wickedly beautiful man & am still amazed that with the drinking, smoking & lines he did his voice never seemed to falter from it. If I don't take ONE dose of my heartburn meds, I have to lower the register of some songs on stage because I can't hit the notes. Being a middle aged vocalist kinda sucks sometimes. 😂 Gone are the 80's & 90's when I could drink on stage and still sing just fine.

Nice analysis. Freddie did not sound nasal, there is an example of him sounding nasal at the Hammersmith Odeon 1975, when was sick. And it sounds different then this. He did not use drugs at this point and he did not even smoke during this time. Killer Queen is a pretty complex song with 29 different cords. The song is studies alongside Beethoven in the Uk for a degree in music.

I actually went through and recorded all the background vocal parts along with it just to see how it would turn out. So cool to be able to "perform with the greats". It sounds so subtle and easy to sing, UNTIL you try to sing it. The break between airy, full, and head voice are so smooth and that unique vibrato. Obviously had complete control of his talent.

It would be interesting. I've read that Freddie recorded it in one take, no punch ins and no overdubs.

Ken, I hope to see you maybe analyze Roger Daltrey in your isolated vocal analysis series!

I always thought this to be a delicate song due to the subject matter, the modern day courtesan - Madame de Pompadour as it were. Everything perfect in its place. Your isolation of Freddy Mercury's vocals then tied into backing vocals and guitar annotate the delicate nature of the song. I can see the champagne bubbly in the glass, smell the sweet French perfume.
This series is such a gift, thank you!

I agree with you on the lacks in songwriting in modern music, yet may I suggest you to a approach Vessel and Blurryface by Twenty One Pilots and Mr Tyler Joseph. Cheers

As someone who has witnessed Freddie first hand live a couple of times, I can state he is a master of his craft. In a video of the band making "A Night at the Opera" album the band just went all out in every direction to take it to a level that no one else did, or has since. Roger Taylor said that the album had so many multi tracks and overdubs by the time they were done the master tape was almost transparent.

@@kentamplin it would be so awesome if you could analyse The Prophet's Song one day (one of the most underrated songs they've ever done), but I imagine that getting isolated tracks of this would be impossible...

Freddie gotta be one of the all-time greats, probably my favourite all round vocalist, alongside Dio. Nice rundown.
