Turning Michael into a bad guy was one of the best moves the show ever made. Thomas Calabro did a wonderful job with the character when they decided to turn Michael into a scumbag. Michael also had the undiagnosed sex addiction.

He gave Jo her baby back, he helped Matt get into med school (he did it though by changing his grade so that maybe wasn't so good of him), there was a scene in season 5 when Taylor wanted Michael to hit her so she could have a bruise to fool Peter into thinking he hit her and Michael absolutely refused saying he would never hit a woman and he always supported Matt with his homosexuality. There was a scene in the first episode of season 4 where they are all at the hospital after Kimberly's bombing and he lets Jo, Sydney and Amanda stay at his house for the night. But yeah it definitely was a wise decision to turn him into a devious character. I think it suited him better.
