    MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Q: How do you have internet at your cabins? A: I have cell service at both cabins but it is spotty due to foliage and cloud cover. I can access the internet from my cabins but have to drive to a local wifi location to upload videos.
Q: How old is Frankie? A: Frankie will be 10 in April of 2018
Q: What video editing software do I use? A: Presently, all I use is Windows Live Movie maker but I’m considering trying imovie, Adobe Elements or SONY VEGAS PRO.
Q: How do you get your water? Did you dig a well? A: Presently, I haul water to the NY cabin but at the NH cabin, I drop a kettle into an old well that was dug by hand by the settlers in the 1700’s.
Q:What is your favorite brand of cast iron cookware? A: I prefer using vintage cast iron. My favorites are BSR and Griswold. If I had to buy new I would buy a Lodge Brand. I plan to purchase this dutch oven in the future:
Q: What do you use for refrigeration? A: We have a small gas refrigerator that we salvaged from an old Shasta camper and a custom icebox that I built into the cabin wall. We make ice on site with a propane freezer.
    Video of icebox:
    Video of Gas Refrigerator:
    Propane Freezer:
Q: What do you use for cooking and heating? A: We use a Kitchen Queen 380 for cooking and heating during the winter months but we also have an antique gas stove in the cabin for when we don't need the heat from the KQ.

I just found this video and in case someone hasn't answered the question...jewelweed is actually edible. It has a lot of minerals so you have to be very careful and not overdo it, it could cause an upset stomach. I'm not an herbalist so eat it at your own risk but from everything that I have read and tried on my own it is edible. My brother is very allergic to poison ivy and I'm actually going to boil this mixture way down and attempt to make some homemade soap with it in hopes of giving him some relief. I really enjoyed your video. Thank you.

I have been lucky this year and have not gotten poison ivy this year but when I do get it I get it bad! I end up at the docs getting steroid cream to put on it. I will def be looking for some of this at camp! Thanks Boss! Good video!

I followed your steps, and made the tea out of the jewel weed after I found some on a hike the other day. I put it on my son's diaper rash, and it cleared it up very quickly! Thanks for the awesome info...like usual! Have a good one, and keep up the great work!

I can't help but share this with you so here goes. I have dealt with poison ivy and things like that my whole life I can go into it with a weed eater or whatever . My grand daughter was the same way I talked to a Dr one time and he said some people just have oils on their skin that can fight it off better but don't push it because everyone after a while has it tear them up and sumac is worse. Well I worked for the city of Hendersonville, TN for a while and they had this thing called a sister City in Japan and they make certain parts of that City look just like their the lay out etc. Well one of the head honchos took it open himself to go online and just order some spreading plants that would throne that were from Japan and he ordered a invasive species of sumac that is Satan in a plant . They planted it because he told them it wasn't poisonous . They were tore up in the hospital and everything, they had to have a company come get it and destroy it and then I worked their the next year . They had forgot the fact that the winds was blowing when they planted it and the trailers they hailed it on was still holding it in dirt between the boards and the whole back paying lot had grown it and the buildings that they parked the machinery in . They told me go back to the back and get the Mini X and track loader , and trailer and the single axle low side dump truck .I got back their and brought out the first piece of equipment. Now you have to remember I'd never had poison ivy or poison sumac bother me . It was growing out of the dirt on the track loader and brushed up against my arm when I came up the lot and was going to ask is this the strain of sumac from Japan the greens are a little different than here. He tripped out here said oh my gosh didn't you say that stuff don't bother you . I said it never has but I hope this kind don't but that it's growing so over the back lot and in the dumptruck and even out of the gravel on the back lot. He ran and got me a ATV spray rig and said go back turn on the pumps and kill it all. Well I did and then went to the showers stepped off and scrubbed . The same evening I was at the Dr by the next day I had a severe wound on my arm where I remembered touching against it and it took lots of medications and a little over a year to heal it up . I have a scar from it but I know guys that have had to have spots cut out I know one guy that it took 16 months for his and had scares all over . I had a Amish Dr that made me a salve that healed it it may of had this in it idk. Anyway if ever around anything like this before careful , sorry for my rant.

Not really. Most of the beaver meat gets consumed, the feet bones and claws get sold and even the skulls but I have a minimal market for the tails.

  • @thebossoftheswamp

I don't know of any other way. Perhaps it could be ground and mixed with some sort of lotion and preserved but the cubes work good for me and feel good too.

Does it matter what time of year you do this? I just put a bunch on the stove (mid-September in the mid-Atlantic), didn't seem to be pods or any liquids coming out of the stem(s) when I cut them.

Cool stuff. This would be useful if I ever get a rash or if someone I know has problems with them as I don't get rashes from poison ivy and oak since I play with it as a kid. Also the plant that cancels the poison in poison ivy grow right next to it. I cant remember the name but it look just like it but grow like bush and doesn't vine. I had to get it for my bro's sons when they got in poison ivy and it was a huge help as it stop the itching within an hour.

WildBillSteve's website tells a great deal about this plant.
This is one of the most wonderful remedies I've ever heard of... I'm allergic to poison Ivy and if I ever find this plant I'm getting some and making the cubes. This link says it's not poisonous and kids can eat the seeds. But drink a lot of water as it is a diuretic. Cool Thanks so much for this info.

Hi Boss, I just noticed this video. I thought I recognized the plant as soon as you showed the flower, when you mentioned and showed the seed pod, I knew I was right. I have tons of this plant growing along the edge of the wetland behind my house. I never knew it was a good remedy for rashes. Now I know thanks to you. I personally really like the plant just to look at and admire it. Now it has a special duty for me.
One question for you though. Have you ever used it to ease any rashes on Frankie? My dogs react severely to even one little flea bite, so I am diligent in preveting that, but sometimes they get a bite, and a large itchy spot will be the result.
Thanks again for sharing, I really admire your unselfish attitude about living in and loving nature. Some day.....

    • @thebossoftheswamp
      @thebossoftheswamp  9 лет назад +1

+Terrence Brennan Hi Terrence, I have thought about using it on Frankie because he has skin issues but I need to find out if it's toxic to dogs first and so far have reached dead ends with that. I'd hate to put in on his skin and have him licking and chewing that spot and then find out it's toxic to them. It works wonders on humans for just about any skin irritation.

those seeds are edible. taste like a cross between a peanut and a sunflower seed. you just eat them fresh. also you can eat jewel weed as a green so long as its under 3 inches or so. it has to be young.by accident once i ate a bunch made like greens.lol i thought it was something else. it tasted good. but your not suppose to eat it once its full grown.

I read somewhere that I could male a liniment by stuffing a mason jar with jewelweed stems, flowers, and leaves, and then pouring rubbing alcohol over it and letting it sit for 4 weeks. But I can't find that recipe now, and I'm wondering what to do with the jar after I let it sit. Do I strain the liquid, then just rub it on a rash?

    • @thebossoftheswamp
      @thebossoftheswamp  9 дней назад +1

I've never mixed it with alcohol so can't say how well that works. I make the jewelweed tea and then make jewelweed ice cubes with that. When I need it, I break a cube in half and let it thaw in a shot glass or similar vessel. Works like a charm on any skin irritation.

Hey jc I have madjor issueswith poison ivy I'm highley allergic to it. Didn't find out till I was working in a plant nursery in mo. It was hot and boy I was wiping the sweat frommy eyes and forhead. The next morning I couldn't open my eyes. I told my partner I thought I was blind, course she took me to the clinic there they said I had the worst case of poison ivy they had ever seen. I tell you I got 5 shots in the keister and was laid up for 4 days. My partner had to lead me around, my face was so swollen I looked lime a blowed up hot air balloon. That was back in 2002 wished that I had that remedy back then. Instead of those damned shots. But your plant grows abundantly up here. So heads up on the cure thanks

For many years my hands would swell up and bubble and itch during the fall and winter while I was trapping. I couldn't figure out how I was getting poison ivy so bad that that time of year. I finally realized it was the beaver fur that I was allergic to. Nothing ever worked to take the itch and swelling down until I tried the jewel weed on it. Now I use the cubes for any skin irritation with great success. Love the stuff.

look at 245. thats poison ivy growing next to it. it will grow, in a natural environment, along with the poisonous plants that it works against. just a note of what ive found out about it over the last 20 or so years.

Great idea with the ice cube :)
Its hard to preserve this plant its why i havent bothered
You want the juicy parts of this plant so drying it makes no sense and can be difficult because of the juice
Also using fats to draw it out probably would not work because we want the water juice properties
Ice on rash i can imagine that would feel great
I seen someone making a plantain Jewel weed salve these be better together for stings burns rashes scrapes etc a kid frezer kit too lol
    Thanks

Nice. When I was a kid in northern PA we called them snap dragons because of the seed pods poppin. No idea they were useful for more than child's amusement. Loveyourvidoes!

Look in drainage ditches. It likes to grow in wet areas.

You might like a homeopathic remedy called RhusTox. Found at health food stores. I start taking it in the spring once or twice a week and if I see that I have touch poison ivy I wash good and take one or two and have not had any reactions to PI ln years. You can get it by petting Frank too. I will also look for jewel weed plants. Thanks

After watching this video, I collected and made a batch of ice cubes. I picked up some poison ivy on my forearm from cutting shooting lanes the other day. Today it started to itch. Jewel cube out of the freezer on to the rash, and relief, the stuff does work, well, and quickly.

I had tons of it in my woods, the deer loved it. They would mow it down. I only used the juice in the stalk part to rub on rashes after splitting it open with my thumbnail. I always wanted to put a bunch of it through a food processor and make a salve.

I'll have to make a batch of this up for my Father inlaw. I have never seen anybody so allergic to Poison Ivy. Me I can walk through the stff with no issues. Great video as usual
