    MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Q: How do you have internet at your cabins? A: I have cell service at both cabins but it is spotty due to foliage and cloud cover. I can access the internet from my cabins but have to drive to a local wifi location to upload videos.
Q: How old is Frankie? A: Frankie will be 10 in April of 2018
Q: What video editing software do I use? A: Presently, all I use is Windows Live Movie maker but I’m considering trying imovie, Adobe Elements or SONY VEGAS PRO.
Q: How do you get your water? Did you dig a well? A: Presently, I haul water to the NY cabin but at the NH cabin, I drop a kettle into an old well that was dug by hand by the settlers in the 1700’s.
Q:What is your favorite brand of cast iron cookware? A: I prefer using vintage cast iron. My favorites are BSR and Griswold. If I had to buy new I would buy a Lodge Brand. I plan to purchase this dutch oven in the future:
Q: What do you use for refrigeration? A: We have a small gas refrigerator that we salvaged from an old Shasta camper and a custom icebox that I built into the cabin wall. We make ice on site with a propane freezer.
    Video of icebox:

    Propane Freezer:
Q: What do you use for cooking and heating? A: We use a Kitchen Queen 380 for cooking and heating during the winter months but we also have an antique gas stove in the cabin for when we don't need the heat from the KQ.

Not sure you considered this but I would have used food grade Silicone Rubber as an adhesive between the bottom lid and top container. Not sure what kind of chemicals are in the adhesive pads you used but I would be concerned that through condensation of the lid, that you might contaminate your filtered water. That and a Silicone bead would assure an air tight seal and would decrease the likelihood of small insects getting between the adhesive pads.
    Best to you.

I had a Berkey,it leaked like a sieve around the connection of the two fill tanks..the filters finally failed after about 2years ( I have no idea how many gallons we put through it) the wife said she didn't want to spend the $$$ for new filters...so out it went.

@Gigi Devoe of you used a silicone bead around the circumference inside *and* out..
It would be air and watertight as long as its treated with respect and not abused (you can use it a lot, just dont beat the shyt outta it).
Or weld it. I reckon. Up to you. In my opinion with this setup you could use a variety of filters and achieve more than satisfactory results.

Using a heat gun will loosen up most silicone or latex caulking. Unless it is high heat silicone like used on thermostats in cars.
If that is the case a razor knife works pretty good.

Hardly anyone knows, it’s about the piece you are making not getting distorted, trim side= lower jaw jaw, other side isn’t altered, you can cut with all three, straight is for notches, will distort both, not long cuts, though everyone does it. There’s a proper tool for what he’s doing keeps hand out, no damage, but everyone does it with what have, and right left handed, compounds, and I know nothing about metal work. Only metal workers, tool sellers and biochemical autistics doomed to remember all, know such things, pointless minutiae. 1. With Ceramic filters you must boil the water. 2. I am not sure if using Berkey's Aluminum filters to remove Fluoride is a good idea. 3. Start with a 1/4 drill bit and go up by 32nds of an inch if possible. The filters are self-tapping. 4. A spigot will save a lot of time. 5. A base to set the filter on is very handy. 6. Clean, Clean, Clean everything as needed. Check around for discounted new Berkey filters. Thanks for the heads-up on the Walmart stainless steel pots. Great idea.

      2. Why would you think removing fluoride isn't a good idea.
      3. Unibits are an option, expensive, but worth it,IMO, regarding these kind of projects.
5.Maybe another ring between the top and bottom pots. The ring could be fabricated to the bottom of the top pots giving a measured distance such you don't rest the post on where the water exits.

Love the filter! When we moved up here the mountains we drank water directly from our spring. Visitors were getting nervous since they told us it might not be the best idea to do this. So we too started thinking about a filtration system that would be inexpensive. BUT the berkley filters were out of our price range. Anyway we never did do anything about filtering it because of the flow from the mountain filters it and we are blessed with pure spring mountain water. But heck, this is just a great idea! Where does your water source come from that you have Lime?? Just curious. And how do you get it into the house being off grid? We have gravity feed and finally got a pressure tank that runs off of solar. Thanks for another great video!

Starry Hilder My homestead is on the grid. I did it this way for the resale value and have a well here. At the NH cabin, I carry my water in with buckets from an old well that was dug by settlers in the 1700's. That water is awesome. My well water at the homestead sucks, which you can see from the reside in the pot. I'm not even going to bother adding the spigot. I'm just duping it into a pitcher for easy serving.

I like your idea. I have a Berkey water filter. I bought the stainless steel spigot and never worry about the plastic breaking. I also got the ceramic filters instead of the black and the outside can be washed with a toothbrush and running water. These can last indefinitely. I used to use only 2, but if you have a family, use 4 filters for faster filtering. One tip is that I recycle my V8 veg. bottles and fill them with tap water (I find that our city water leaves a brownish film on the filters which I wash off every few months) and pou it in top. Then I drain out same amount from bottom. So what goes in equals what comes out and I don't run out.

We have municipal water, so we use the extra add on filters that remove chlorine. In the bottom already filtered water I added five .999 silver coins. Silver is a natural disinfectant. When the settlers headed out west in covered wagons, many would just use silver coins in their drinking water. Keep up the great work!!!

Loved this idea & the video. I'm now a subscriber so I have a hint to save even more & also filter out fluoride.
Instead of the pricey Berkey filters, use a Doulton which also filters out fluoride.
As for any water from outside, I would strain first & then distill or boil it.
None of these devices kill all viruses & parasites.

    • @_just_looking_thank_you
      @_just_looking_thank_you 4 года назад +2

Ms Pat, I second this. The Doulton ceramic filters are the originals, dating back nearly two hundred years.
The Berkeys are knock offs with questionable testing creds, a tendency to break off at the stem, and greater maintenance requirements.
On the other hand, the Doultons proved their effectiveness during a Cholera epidemic, are not at all prone to breakage, and don’t wear out. They offer the dependability that one would want for boondocking.

I just picked up 2 sawyer mini water filters, they are a super cool filter that is good for 100,000 gallons and they are only $20, if you ever need one to go in your pocket for when you are in the woods, it's a good one....atb to you Boss

@@satatik21 why would you want copper or brass? Both copper and brass will corrode and break down over time. nice job on saving on thier crazy price for same thing. Even thier plastic holder is more expensive than you just made. I actually use zero filter. I just looked for a comparison and everyone comes from berkey. kind of stupid to trust something from one side or the other? Being outside, you could simply have a small stove-top water distiller. Distiller's seem to not keep up with our drinking water needs but it helps make the filters last longer. peace

Hey Boss...thank you SO much for your instructions on how to make your own filter, I recently have been delving into the horror of fluoride in the drinking water, yikes. I just got done with my filter and it's running through the first batch as I type this. I just wanted to ask if you ever added the tap at the bottom for pouring the water out? If not, how do you get the purified water out of the bottom pot? Thanks again...

    • @thebossoftheswamp
      @thebossoftheswamp  7 лет назад +4

I never bothered with the tap. I just lift the top part off and set it on a smaller pot so that the filters stubs are elevated and don't get broken. Then I pour the water into a pitcher and replace the top pot and start over. It's quicker than draining it through a spigot.
