I have to say, this is one of the few times a video about a “hidden tool/feature!” in Lightroom actually taught something I didn’t know that is also incredibly useful. Thanks!
Nigel, i hope you read this. Every of your videos do 2 things to me: 1. they center me. 2 they light a fire in my heart to push my creativity further. Thank you for that.
I’ve watched a similar video explanation on this ‘intersect’ before, but yours is much clearer. Thanks Nigel. From a fellow back pain sufferer -3 ops - I can sympathise. Hope you have a speedy recovery with good relief.
Nige, you making this videoe even when you´re still recovering for the surgery has made me to have a huge respect for you. Hope you recover well, Regards!
Possibly the best LR tutorial video you have done Nige. These are fantastic tips and explain that 'Intersect' mode so clearly and succinctly. Sending some healing power to you from Tasmania.
I wanted to wish you a full and speedy recovery from your surgery! I also wanted to thank you for this video. Th is a remarkably transformative "hidden" use of an existing Lightroom tool. Or at least, I didn't know about it. Maybe I accidentally missed it as a new feature? In any case, the ability to "intersect" masks is an incredibly powerful refinement tool. The "select sky" mask has always been impressive for its ability to accurately select the sky (in most cases). But the practical benefits have always been limited by the (apparent) inability to soften the transition areas between sky and ground/subjects, etc. Thanks to this video, I now know how to soften or otherwise customize those transitions. Thank you again!
Good day, Nigel. I can't tell you how many videos I've seen about Lightroom and intersecting, but this was - by far- the BEST I have seen. The explanation and the demos were just spot on. Fantastic video and thank you ever so much for sharing this process with us. Best of luck in your recovery fro your back surgery and looking forward to seeing you back in the field!
LOL Nigel, I have been requesting this feature and hadn't realized it was here. THANK YOU! On a side note, your back... My Uncle owned a landscaping company and made it big, he was the main landscaper for Disneyland back in the late 80's or 90's. He was hands on and as such destroyed his back. He's had 3 surgeries, was supposed to have just 1, the subsequent surgeries were to fix the first one. After the third, he was still in pain but decided not to do it again. They gave him pills (almost got completely hooked), the pills eased the pain but weakened his overall health making it more difficult to heal. This went on for years, but a few months after his 3rd surgery, he felt the dependence of the pills, it scared him and he stopped them but was still in enough pain he couldn't function normally. Being that we are in California he decided to give Marijuana a try. After 4 months, his back started to feel tolerable, even when he wasn't using it. I don't know the exact science behind it but there's been some research to show that Cannabis may actually help in the healing of bones. Where as pills actually hurt the healing process, weaken your mind and body. Just some food for thought. You are an incredible photographer, I strive to reach your skill level and level of success, it would be a tragedy if something like your back prevented you from moving forward in your career. Speedy recovery! Justin
Thank you for explaining these intersections! Easing the sky effect gently through the horizon line with the sea using a linear gradient is brilliant! Way better than a simple sky selection. Glad you were able to sit and make this video!
Thanks so much for this Nigel. I paused your video and immediately tried this tool on a photograph that I had given up on... It worked beautifully! I hope you get well soon.
I remeber this tool was in Capture One when I tried it out for a few months and loved it. I did not realize it was available in Lightroom now, finally a video with a tip/feature that is actually helpful!! Thank you
Nigel - I have been away from photography for a few years because I had feet and leg problems too! They really limited my physical abilities for the last several years. I had surgery yesterday to repair what was essentially an aneurism of my spinal cord! Today I can feel my feet for the first time in close to 4 years. I now have hope that I can return to photography. I have followed you for years. Today I came to your channel to get familiar with some of the new Lightroom features. I had no idea you had gone through back problems!
Sorry to hear about your back, brother. I've had two spinal surgeries and it ain't fun, but hang in there, it gets better with time and getting strong again.
THANKS, Nigel This Was very helpful in seeing several great examples of how the intersect tool was used. I have struggled with the concept after viewing several other vids from others that tried to explain it without good examples of the how and why. Wish you a speedy recovery. This was excellent thanks again
Many thanks Nigel…definitely one of the best explanations of how to get the most from this new tool. Up till now I have found it very difficult to get my head round how it really works!
So valuable. Thank you. I’ve been working diligently to get this down but you clarified many points for me. It’s my second time watching and I will probably watch a third time and take notes. I hope you are healing more and more each day - Your story is inspiring and you def see the glass as half full. Take care
Hi just an update for the intersect locator (windows). If you hover your mouse pointer beside whichever mask you want to intersect, you will see 3 dots to the right appear, click on that and a small menu appears with the option to intersect 😊
When I watch the subtle elements that you take so seriously I feel like I’m learning how to taste. I thought it was beautiful without the tweaks. So much to learn to see the next level of improvement.
Thank you so very much for showing this little, but powerful hidden tool in LR. Wished to do it that way, but didn't know until your video that it's already implemented in LR. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
The masking tools in LR and ACR are massive. One thing I do a lot, often after doing a sky selection, is an inverted sky selection that lets me edit the whole scene except the sky. Between intersecting masks, inverting them, enlarging or restricting them, etc, Adobe have more powerful editing tools available now than ever before. And that's before going into Photoshop!
@@saganandroid4175 you tell me. You can probably do a quick selection for the sky in that old version of PS, but can it work around and through tree branches? I doubt it. But Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw can, with one click and minimal need for adjustment. As far as intersecting one filter or tool with another, no, PS 2018 cannot do that in one swoop. That's what layers are for, but you have to work them separately rather than simultaneously.
Good that you are able to be up and about Nigel. Here's hoping your recovery continues apace. Thank you for the tip - I have used intersect (usually colour) quite a lot but wasn't aware that you can intersect with another mask. That's a game changer for me in my editing, thank you.
Wow! Fantastic video! You have helped me so much with editing in lightroom. I knew it was a powerful program, but didn't know how to access some of these amazing features. Wishing you a fast healing!
Such great advice explained perfectly! …now I’m trying to find a way to “like” this video more than once! 😉 Thanks, once again, for sharing your wisdom Nigel!
I love these examples of high level masking. As a fellow photographer with severe back issues, I wish you the best in your recovery. Patience and taking it slow is a must.
Thanks for the tip, that will be very handy. Hope your back's doing better soon. I got some bad discs in my lower back that act up a lot so I know how a hurting back can really slow you down.
I’ve had so much trouble with the new masks, but I saw you use this in a video a few weeks ago, and it changed everything. I use it to combine a linear or radial with a luminance or color mask
Excellent video bringing more knowledge to your viewers and in a very easy to follow delivery. Thank you and great to see you back in the saddle again. Best of luck on your continued recovery...be a good patient by being patient and taking it slowly!
Brilliant video! I have used this with sky and linear grad, but seeing you use it with the brush tool was new to me and will be a game changer! Thanks Nigel 🙂
I have to say, this is one of the few times a video about a “hidden tool/feature!” in Lightroom actually taught something I didn’t know that is also incredibly useful. Thanks!
Nobody else mentioned the alt for intersect.
The lightroom masks are so great. So much great AI these days, Luminar Topaz DxO, are all amazing, too.
@@WanderFeetChronicles In fact I had never heard about it before. I makes it a secret for me then I guess 😆
Wow! Something that wasn't actually clickbait! Thank you. Super useful.
Every once in a while you can stumble upon some really useful videos on Lightroom and Photoshop. This is definately one of those videos. Wow...
One of the best updates they have done to Lightroom. It’s a very powerful and user friendly tool.
Nigel, i hope you read this. Every of your videos do 2 things to me: 1. they center me. 2 they light a fire in my heart to push my creativity further. Thank you for that.
Glad to see you back. I hope your recovery is complete and you can get out in the field again. Good luck/
Happy to see you slowly getting back on your feet, even if recovery takes time!
I’ve watched a similar video explanation on this ‘intersect’ before, but yours is much clearer. Thanks Nigel. From a fellow back pain sufferer -3 ops - I can sympathise. Hope you have a speedy recovery with good relief.
This is an absolute game changer. Cheers for the detailed explanation Nigel

It is very seldom that I learn something new about Lightroom, but this is definitely one of them. Epic video
Hope you get well soon and stay safe in these hard times

i have known about this tool but you have displayed very nice ways of actually using it to your advantage. Very impressive.

Wishing your back all the healing powers of the universe. Thank you for the video!
I can't lie, I expected this to be click bait, but it was genuinely a hidden feature of the masks tool I hadn't seen and that's super useful! Thanks!
Well I definitely leaned something watching this. Thanks Nigel. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Glad it helped Jeff
I had no idea this was a feature, greatly appreciated!
Hope for a quick recovery. Your channel is a reference for landscape photography from photo to print. Thanks
Very useful. In ACR pressing the shift key gets the intersect function to appear.
I appreciate your videos. Be well, Nigel.
I love the intersect feature. Use it often with color range and luminance range, brush, etc
Awesome way of explaining something I ‘ve had difficulty understanding! Thanks for the tips, Nigel!
So glad the surgery went well... great to see you!
Wow! I agree with Ryan’s comment and think this is just brilliant, thank you very much!

Thank you, as a newbie to Lightroom it's wonderful learning about these hidden gems. Hope your back gets better soon, have fun with your drone!
Your health is your wealth and hope you recover soon Nigel.
Thanks Nigel! Very clear. I’ll try it, because I often do a number of local adjustments, which intersect!. Hope your back is better soon!

Great video, very helpful! Good to see you back in the chair, and hope to see you out and about very soon!
I’m glad you’re feeling better, Nigel! Best wishes on more recovery. Thanks for illuminating the intersect tool; I’d forgotten about how to use that.
Outstanding video. Great tip and excellent examples of how to apply it. Thank you. Best of luck with your recovery from surgery.
Thank you so very much for showing this little, but powerful hidden tool in LR. Wished to do it that way, but didn't know until your video that it's already implemented in LR. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
Thank you, Nigel, for this most excellent lesson! 👍😄
I stopped the video in the middle just to test it!!! what a good tips :). Thanks!!!!
Excellent explanation and it certainely works extremely well, I hope your make a speedy recovery and get back out into the Landscape.
As a LRC newbie this changed everything!
Great lightroom tips Nigel, glad to see you on screen again!
Great tips Nigel. I hope the recovery from the operation is swift and you get back out with the camera soon.
Brilliant! What a great hands-on explanation of this toolset! Thank you Nigel!

ACR? I have PS CS 2018. Can it do anything like this?

Great Job Nigel. Glad to see you're on the mend. I've been in back hell myself, glad to see you're getting your life back.
I wish I had watched this before spending hours trying to edit a photo in lightroom last night. This is the exact feature I needed, thank you!
Great video. Hope you continue to feel better. I did this with separate masks but this is much more elegant.
Good that you are able to be up and about Nigel. Here's hoping your recovery continues apace. Thank you for the tip - I have used intersect (usually colour) quite a lot but wasn't aware that you can intersect with another mask. That's a game changer for me in my editing, thank you.
This is a great addition to the tool belt, thanks for the info Nigel! Hope the back heals quick for you!
So grateful you shared this feature… my days of using ‘subtract’/‘add’ to masks are finally over! 😅
These are some awesome tips! I’m praying for you to have a quick back recovery! 😊
great teaching moment mate!!!!!!!!!! so many people claim to have a cool secret in LR and in the end is just for clicks. not you...you rock!
Fine to have you back. We missed you and wish you optimal regeneration. Your video is great as it allways is....!
