- There is a tool in Lightroom that I use more than any other. It is really easy to use and means you do more in Lightroom and less in Photoshop. I love it!

I have to say, this is one of the few times a video about a “hidden tool/feature!” in Lightroom actually taught something I didn’t know that is also incredibly useful. Thanks!
Nobody else mentioned the alt for intersect.
The lightroom masks are so great. So much great AI these days, Luminar Topaz DxO, are all amazing, too.
@@WanderFeetChronicles In fact I had never heard about it before. I makes it a secret for me then I guess 😆
One of the best updates they have done to Lightroom. It’s a very powerful and user friendly tool.
Wow! Something that wasn't actually clickbait! Thank you. Super useful.
This is an absolute game changer. Cheers for the detailed explanation Nigel
Nigel - I have been away from photography for a few years because I had feet and leg problems too! They really limited my physical abilities for the last several years. I had surgery yesterday to repair what was essentially an aneurism of my spinal cord! Today I can feel my feet for the first time in close to 4 years. I now have hope that I can return to photography. I have followed you for years. Today I came to your channel to get familiar with some of the new Lightroom features. I had no idea you had gone through back problems!
Happy to see you slowly getting back on your feet, even if recovery takes time!
The masking tools in LR and ACR are massive. One thing I do a lot, often after doing a sky selection, is an inverted sky selection that lets me edit the whole scene except the sky. Between intersecting masks, inverting them, enlarging or restricting them, etc, Adobe have more powerful editing tools available now than ever before. And that's before going into Photoshop!
ACR? I have PS CS 2018. Can it do anything like this?
@@saganandroid4175 you tell me. You can probably do a quick selection for the sky in that old version of PS, but can it work around and through tree branches? I doubt it. But Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw can, with one click and minimal need for adjustment. As far as intersecting one filter or tool with another, no, PS 2018 cannot do that in one swoop. That's what layers are for, but you have to work them separately rather than simultaneously.
Thank you for explaining these intersections! Easing the sky effect gently through the horizon line with the sea using a linear gradient is brilliant! Way better than a simple sky selection. Glad you were able to sit and make this video!
Good day, Nigel. I can't tell you how many videos I've seen about Lightroom and intersecting, but this was - by far- the BEST I have seen. The explanation and the demos were just spot on. Fantastic video and thank you ever so much for sharing this process with us. Best of luck in your recovery fro your back surgery and looking forward to seeing you back in the field!
This was SO helpful, thank you! I have just begun to understand masking and this gives me so many more options. My favorite one is the intersection of color range with a brush.
Absolutely brilliant explanations, on your already superb photos. You make it look so easy. Thank you, Nigel.
Great to see you back Nigel! Keep getting better and better. And thank you for those amazing tips. The masking tool of Lightroom is so powerful!
Brilliant video! I have used this with sky and linear grad, but seeing you use it with the brush tool was new to me and will be a game changer! Thanks Nigel 🙂
Thanks Nigel. Great video. I've avoided using the Intersect tool because I couldn't understand it (been using luminosity masks in PS instead). Now I'll give it a shot thanks to your quick tutorial!! Hope the back recovery continues smoothly.
Glad to see you back. I hope your recovery is complete and you can get out in the field again. Good luck/
Hi just an update for the intersect locator (windows). If you hover your mouse pointer beside whichever mask you want to intersect, you will see 3 dots to the right appear, click on that and a small menu appears with the option to intersect 😊
Thanks Nigel, wishing you a speedy recovery!
Excellent video bringing more knowledge to your viewers and in a very easy to follow delivery. Thank you and great to see you back in the saddle again. Best of luck on your continued recovery...be a good patient by being patient and taking it slowly!
Great video. I've used the intersect tool quite a lot. It's a great tip to combine it with 'Select Sky' though to make the end result more subtle, and also when 'Select Sky' does an OK but not great job of selecting just the sky and not part of the landscape too
Thank you for these tips! I watched this video just before editing some photos I’d taken a few days previously and it was so handy in editing the photos - I noticed a real difference in the end piece.
I’ve been watching quite a few of your videos recently and noticed a big difference in how I composed the image and my approach to taking a photo last time I went out to do some photography.
Thank you for all the time and effort you put into your channel 😊
Good that you are able to be up and about Nigel. Here's hoping your recovery continues apace. Thank you for the tip - I have used intersect (usually colour) quite a lot but wasn't aware that you can intersect with another mask. That's a game changer for me in my editing, thank you.
Every once in a while you can stumble upon some really useful videos on Lightroom and Photoshop. This is definately one of those videos. Wow...
Such great advice explained perfectly! …now I’m trying to find a way to “like” this video more than once! 😉 Thanks, once again, for sharing your wisdom Nigel!
Thanks Nigel, I like these tutorials for the clear explanations, they’re really useful! Please could you use an oversize cursor so we can see the movements on the likes of an iPad screen, it would be a great help. Keep up the great work and I hope your back continues to improve.
These LR and Photoshop videos are extremely useful. I hope that you continue to do them regularly. Thanks for making this video!
I’m glad you’re feeling better, Nigel! Best wishes on more recovery. Thanks for illuminating the intersect tool; I’d forgotten about how to use that.
Brilliant, Nigel - many thanks! Sorry to hear about your back troubles. Speedy recovery!
So valuable. Thank you. I’ve been working diligently to get this down but you clarified many points for me. It’s my second time watching and I will probably watch a third time and take notes. I hope you are healing more and more each day - Your story is inspiring and you def see the glass as half full. Take care
Thanks Nigel. The explanation of this tool is much appreciated. I had a shoulder replacement last year which limited me to using my drone for all my photography (the most I could do was hold the controller!) but it helped me through a rough patch for sure. Enjoy the drone and get better soon.
Many thanks Nigel. Very well explained, looking forward to giving this a go. Hope your recovery continues to go well and you will be able to get out on more adventures soon.
Absolutely brilliant! Thanks, always love your posts.
I've got to thank you for this. I've been trying to do this very thing in a round about way for some time. I was not aware of "intersecting" at all.
I had found a work around of using a grad then "minusing" an inverted sky selection from it which isnt perfect and a bit messy/ clunky.
This "secret" way is already removed some frustration from my post processing work flow
Again, Thanks
Intersections are very strong and useful! I usually use radial filters and intersect them with luminance ranges to play around. Sometimes the linear gradient too. Makes it very selective.
So glad to see you up and about. Prayers for a complete recover sir !! I've intersected before but not with as many different mask... can't wait to try a few more :)
Excellent tutorial, Nigel. I particularly appreciate your use of many different images as source examples. Thank you!!!
Brilliant. Thanks for this insight and the great examples. I never really understood what intersect meant until I watched this. I've now tried this on a few of my own photos and can already see that this has huge potential.
Great to have you back! Thank you for the tutorial, this is awesome!
I affirm you get stronger everyday Nigel. be well my friend. Jeff, Brisbane, Australia
Thank you very much. What a great tips. All your tips in Lightroom and Photoshop are extremely helpful!
Thank you, as a newbie to Lightroom it's wonderful learning about these hidden gems. Hope your back gets better soon, have fun with your drone!
I’ve had so much trouble with the new masks, but I saw you use this in a video a few weeks ago, and it changed everything. I use it to combine a linear or radial with a luminance or color mask
Excellent explanation and it certainely works extremely well, I hope your make a speedy recovery and get back out into the Landscape.
Awesome way of explaining something I ‘ve had difficulty understanding! Thanks for the tips, Nigel!
A fantastic video Nigel, always love your tutorials, very clear and nicely demonstrated. Hope your back gets better soon.
That is amazing. Thanks so much for sharing that. I never knew. 👍🏻. Hope you back heals quickly.
Brilliant Nigel, thanks for the great video!!! Congrats!
Fantastic tip - really useful. Thanks for the video Nigel!
Nigel - Thanks for sharing. This is truly a game changer!
thanks Nigel and wish you speedy recovery.
thank you like always very educational, happy you are doing much better take all the time you need enjoy your garden and stay safe....
It is very seldom that I learn something new about Lightroom, but this is definitely one of them. Epic video
Great video. Hope you continue to feel better. I did this with separate masks but this is much more elegant.
Wow, your lightroom videos are amazing, thank you!!! I'll look at your other videos too, your explanations are excellent!
Great info!!! Glad to see you are back and hope you are feeling 100% very soon. No rush... will be here whenever you are ready.
Another great lesson Nigel! Thank you!
Well I definitely leaned something watching this. Thanks Nigel. Wishing you a speedy recovery.
Amazing. I will definitely use this. Thanks for this content.
Incredible. So useful and well demonstrated. Thanks!
THANKS, Nigel This Was very helpful in seeing several great examples of how the intersect tool was used. I have struggled with the concept after viewing several other vids from others that tried to explain it without good examples of the how and why. Wish you a speedy recovery. This was excellent thanks again
Amazing - this is finally something that might keep me from immediately running to Photoshop for detailed/subtle edits. Many thanks --- and feel better very very soon!
I remeber this tool was in Capture One when I tried it out for a few months and loved it.
I did not realize it was available in Lightroom now, finally a video with a tip/feature that is actually helpful!!
Thank you
i have known about this tool but you have displayed very nice ways of actually using it to your advantage. Very impressive.
Thank you Nigel for this very informative and well explained video!! Hope you feel better soon.
Possibly the best LR tutorial video you have done Nige. These are fantastic tips and explain that 'Intersect' mode so clearly and succinctly. Sending some healing power to you from Tasmania.
Wow! Fantastic video! You have helped me so much with editing in lightroom. I knew it was a powerful program, but didn't know how to access some of these amazing features. Wishing you a fast healing!
This actually was so helpful! I’ve already used this so much since first watching! Thanks for such a great video!!
Outstanding video. Great tip and excellent examples of how to apply it. Thank you. Best of luck with your recovery from surgery.
Brilliant ! Thank you so much for that video! Very useful !
LOL Nigel, I have been requesting this feature and hadn't realized it was here. THANK YOU! On a side note, your back... My Uncle owned a landscaping company and made it big, he was the main landscaper for Disneyland back in the late 80's or 90's. He was hands on and as such destroyed his back. He's had 3 surgeries, was supposed to have just 1, the subsequent surgeries were to fix the first one. After the third, he was still in pain but decided not to do it again. They gave him pills (almost got completely hooked), the pills eased the pain but weakened his overall health making it more difficult to heal. This went on for years, but a few months after his 3rd surgery, he felt the dependence of the pills, it scared him and he stopped them but was still in enough pain he couldn't function normally. Being that we are in California he decided to give Marijuana a try. After 4 months, his back started to feel tolerable, even when he wasn't using it. I don't know the exact science behind it but there's been some research to show that Cannabis may actually help in the healing of bones. Where as pills actually hurt the healing process, weaken your mind and body.
Just some food for thought. You are an incredible photographer, I strive to reach your skill level and level of success, it would be a tragedy if something like your back prevented you from moving forward in your career.
Speedy recovery!
Justin
Excellent demonstration of the intersect function. Thanks!
Good information. Thanks for the tips! Wishing you a quick back recovery.
This is incredibly useful, Nigel. Thank you very much! I can see this becoming a key part of my workflow. Can't wait to give it a go.
This is an amazing tutorial. Thank you for sharing your skills with us.

Nigel you absolute hero. I've been really struggling with the latest update of LR and completely lost the ability to use masks. Had no idea I needed to just press Alt. Thank you!
Extremely useful! Thank you Nigel.
I really appreciate your videos. Thanks for making them and all the best for the recovery!
Thanks Nigel! Very clear. I’ll try it, because I often do a number of local adjustments, which intersect!. Hope your back is better soon!
Top tip. Like it. Thanks Nigel. Wishing you a super speedy recovery. Simon
This is an amazing feature, thank you so much! Have to admire your commitment to keeping on producing quality content. May your full recovery be speedy!
Thank you for these tips! Really useful indeed!
Fantastic video, thanks for putting this up, Nigel. I am not a smart man and I have been scratching my head over what this interect function does. And I already have so many photos in Lightroom that will be greatly enhanced by this technique. Especially on the skies! Thank you.
Awesome Nigel I've been in need of this for a long time. Great video.
Thank you! Just brilliant!!! I will have so many uses for this technique!!
So glad the surgery went well... great to see you!
Great Job Nigel. Glad to see you're on the mend. I've been in back hell myself, glad to see you're getting your life back.
I’ve used the new masking tools quite often but more often I found myself adding and subtracting than using intersect. Great explanation! Thanks for that. Hope you recover soon and will be able to shoot outdoors again.
These are some awesome tips! I’m praying for you to have a quick back recovery! 😊
This is really good stuff. Can't wait to try it. thank you.
Thanks Nigel, very useful info. I'll have to do a bit of experimentation. Glad to see you up and about despite the setback.
Fantastic explanation Nigel, didn’t know about it. I’ll be using it from now on! Thank you so much, and hope you are better soon. 👍
Just the video I've been waiting for. Thanks
I only discovered you yesterday and I think it’s going to be a great learning curve. I didn’t know so much after all!!! Thanks!
Brilliant! What a great hands-on explanation of this toolset! Thank you Nigel!
This is an incredible tool for Lr. I'm still gonna use Ps for some very specific editing, but those tools you just gave us will allow me to do more in Lr alone. Thanks!
