    This is probably one of your best videos for improving your photos consistently! People are missing out as it's not one of your top viewed ones!
    Alot of people seem to have problems with composition I see online and don't talk as much about balance with in colour's in landscape photography. This has been the longest thing for me to get right and still don't! Hopefully now with this new information I will get over that hurdle! Thanks so much 🙏

    From what I understand (and have experienced) whether in Lightroom or any other image editor, using white balance for artistic purposes is risky. Not that you recommended it, but your IG question revealed apparently many folks do use it that way. IMO white balance should be adjusted to provide a color-temperature-appropriate base from which to start. In other words, a level playing field. Once done, other tools can be used for artistic purposes. In my experience, there are too many unintended side effects when using white balance as a creative tool. It's global and will affect colors often far away from what's intended.
    Great video!

    Nigel, thanks for this eye-opener. I always struggle with the greens and greenish colors. The theory of occurence dependency in sunlights and shadows was clear to me but the use of right (!) processing steps in the tool was very helpfull to manage in future. Also thanks for the hint and link to the color page at Adobe.

    This is a great tutorial, I wasn't aware of the colour wheel feature in Adobe! I use the WB as a replacement for old skool warm up filters, though it's not great. I use the calibration sliders a lot, they are much more subtle than the HSL. I agree that green foliage on a sunny day using the Adobe Landscape profile are generally a horrible colour! I've also learnt how to use colourmask, that's a game changer for me!

    Not a fan of over-saturation, which is all over social media... but those shots seem to get a lot of likes. I can't tell you the number of times I've said to an image, "there's no way that sky is natural". That said I can appreciate when photography merges into Art. To each his own. I really like your image @13:40, just wow!

  • @kristopherjwolff

    Thanks for showing some of your editing process... Very helpful... I have a question on the process: what's the difference between the "blue saturation in calibration" you do later in the video and the "blue saturation slider in hsl" you talked about earlier?

    • @bobfreephotography
      @bobfreephotography 2 года назад +1

      I'll take a stab at that. Disclaimer: I have not watched the whole video yet. Calibration affects every pixel in the image. A pixel is made up of the 3 RGB values. If you change the blue slider in calibration, you affect the blue levels of each pixel in the image. You are basically "calibrating" what a pixel's base values are. If you change the blue values in HSL, you are affecting the hue, saturation or luminance of what you perceive as blue. Some people use calibration to set the base colors coming out of a particular model of camera to suit their taste and use it on all images.

    Hi Nigel, I am stumped a bit. So I’ve had a couple waterfalls that are down in a bowl basically. Towards end of day so sun is down and waterfall is turning out great except on each side where there is no water just foliage and rocks where it is shaded, basically all day sides are in the shade. The falls itself is tack sharp but the shaded sides are not, they are soft. Even when exposing to the right and bringing up the shadows in post. What would be my best option to help this in camera?
    Canon 5DSr / EF 16-35 f/4 IS USM.
    Best of luck with the back healing up.
