It's easy to underestimate the power of pointing out, that the king's not wearing any clothes. Ian, has, for decades, played the role admirably.
Hislop does what the owner tells him. PE hasn't been radical for twenty years or more.
The concepts of nakedness and Ian Hislop should not appear in the same paragraph let alone the same sentence.
Who Charlie the turd? He's probably waiting for his butler to dress him.
Ian takes no prisoners when he hears of incompetency, corruption and lies! A good man to have on your side.
I mean, he was happy to take money to appear alongside Jimmy Savile on TV despite having heard the rumours.
Hislop does what the owner tells him. PE hasn't been radical for twenty years or more.

@@rob-c. You mean the bit where Hislop talks about what he can publish in Private Eye? How does that relate to who he chooses to appear with on TV? He knew the rumours and still went ahead. Poor judgement at the very least. But he made a decent amount of money out of it. Thinking about it, he appeared with Rolf Harris too. And Max Clifford. And Clement Freud. Seems like quite a pattern of poor judgement, if that's what it was. Of course, there's no suggestion that Hislop himself is implicated in those crimes.
@@terryboland3816 Oh, please.
I have subscribed to Private Eye on and off for over 30 years.. i say on and off, because i get so depressed by the incompetence and corruptness of our successive governments that i have to take a break....before re subscribing. If more people read the Eye instead of say, the Daily Mail.. this country would be a better place.
The jails would be busier...
I remember P.E being the ONLY publication to be anywhere near honest after Dianna died specifically over the sickening hypocrisy. Right up to her death NOBODY had anything good to say about her. Until I saw P.E I really did wander if I was cracking up.
I remember that, we were being subjected to the most incredible mass indoctrination by all mainstream media for weeks. I’ve never experienced anything like it before or since. I felt then that it was collective guilt for harassing her, which contributed to her death.
Were you lonely as a cloud?
There's a great bit about the in Christopher Hitchens documentary about Diana where they deconstruct Candle in the Wind in the PE offices. It's pompous and hilarious in equal measures.
@@billythedog-309 not as lonely as you
It was a pleasant morning and I'd just returned from a early morning walk when the phone rang.
A blubbering barely coherent friend was wailing about the death of Diana.
I couldn't believe how upset the man was and still can't.
Obviously there were a lot of people like him but I suspect many more who like me were, oh that's a pity like hearing about any unpleasant news concerning complete strangers then moved on.
That wonderful moment he held towering hypocrite Gary Neville to account on HIGNFY last night. Ian has always talked sensible truth
We'll just ignore the fact that Ian Hislop also works for an organisation that's covering the world cup.
@@dannylad1600 bit of a reach
I saw that! I suppose it was very uncomfortable to Neville but it had to be said and Ian did not let it go. Brilliant.
@@dannylad1600 he wants to get his views over he works for the BBC but he attacks them still
All journalists should be nobody's fool and nobody's friend. Sadly, Ian Hislop is the only one who believes in this maxim
An honest man😊. There are very few left so I am grateful to Ian for his persistence.
Ian dear, you're not 'very old'. You're a national treasure! 😊
This guy and private eye are deeply important to democracy in this country.
I asked Mr. Hislop to sign a photo for my mother in-law and he sent me a photo with a lovely and kindly inscription. A kind-hearted man doing lasting good.
Our country would be very much worse if Hislop didn't exist
... but a little better if Merton didn't.
I hope he’s got an apprentice as good as Richard Ingram’s did
Cud it get worse
@MsMissy *2022* - Here you are again.
Ian Hislop almost always talks truth to power. People who do that have to be pretty smart to survive, I think.
Most of the time Ian Hislop is a most brilliant and good man, which is far more those some other people
My only gripe about Private eye. Is the font is so bloody small its a terror on my old eyes to read
I don't know if it's also online. I wish they would have it there because then you could zoom to increase the text size.
I bought a magnifying glass for that express purpose... I'm only 32!
I met his lawyer a few times circa 1990, used to go sailing with her husband. Mr Hislop kept her busy.
Did that story appear in Private Eye ?
@@2msvalkyrie529 no.
@@stephanguitar9778 is it even true
The man's a national treasure, fact
@MsMissy *2022* - So many new people today. Welcome.
Power to Hislop.
Ian has given us decades of laughs. I'm so glad that he also manages to make us pause and think a bit more about what the heck is actually going on in politics.
I once had the honour of fixing that phone of Spike's. He was every bit as eccentrc, prickly, and attention seeking as you'd expect. However, behing the mask was a sweet guy trying to get out.
Who comes after Hislop at Private Eye? It is an important paper.
A genius at what he does, long may he continue
You & me both Mr.HISLOP. Hypocrisy should be made a criminal offence !
never judge a book by its cover is so apt for Ian, he looks like a posh tory donor, how wrong would you be. love Mr hislops work
Privileged upper middle class white bloke who suffers from liberal guilt . Best cure is to appear radical and " left wing " .
As long as it doesn't threaten your property value or your kids private
schooling ? Typical Guardian reader .!
Really? Can't see how he looks different to any other champagne socialist living in the metropolitan bubble
Ian is brilliant.
SIR Jimmy Savile? Prince Andrew? Ghislaine Maxwell? Jeffrey Epstein? Lord Mountbatten? And so many more...
Lord Mountbatten what’s he been up to?
IAN is a very clever man , Hi , regards to him . He tries to say it as it is . All ways a good watch on tv .😉👍
Hypocrites rarely see themselves.
Ian is great.
Why did you capitalise 'The' but not 'baker'?
@@K1lostream he is 'The' baker, not 'A' baker..........maybe?
:-)
@@WhoAmEye_WhoAreEwe yes what you said
@@Kodakcompactdisc Ah! The baker! For there can be only one! Gotcha!
P.S. Send me a croissant!
@@K1lostream will do 😂👍🏼
Just about to get an interesting story about Spike and that woman had to interrupt because she is SO important.
I found that annoying too.
Ha! Well done Ian. They tried but they know they’re supporting the biggest load of crooks ever. The cash they’re shoveling to their mates is staggering. Your silence shames you.
Rumour has it, the PM is a secret fan of Jeremy Corbyn. He lets him live rent free.
In a rather spacious loft, I hear. Very trendy...
Ian praising The Guardian for something. Lawks a mercy!
He didn't even call it "The Grauniad". I find it very difficult to call it anything else; I have to really think about how to say it, if I want to get it right.
Rather like "binocliers" instead of "binoculars", corrupted by an early episode of "The Young Ones"
@@edeledeledel5490 Mine is choss……….Tony Hancock’s version of chaos. That has been with me since the 1950s!
@@Bethi4WFH Don't actually remember the episode that was in, but I saw all the TV originals; my mother was a big fan. Was it in a radio show? We missed those.
Ian gives credit where its due but that doesnt mean that he will defend then when they are in the wrong.
Absolutely fantastic
What would we do without this programme.
Great Interview
I see from your logo that you are a person of culture.
A man of principles
A super interview. Thank you.
Why didn't she just let him keep going instead of interrupting
Great how he humiliated Gary Neville for his hypocrisy on HIGNFY
If hislop was a leader of a party would you vote him as prime minister??
give us a 👍's up if you would!
Would he get welcomed into the BBC today? Hmmm - well, pardon me for saying so, but I think his diversity score would come in rather low................
The one subject that none of those " courageous , radical " journalists dare to mention. !
I was hoping Mr Hislop would confirm the facts behind the Charles Lynton public toilet escapade back in the day!
Yep, he was done for it. Used his middle names.
Aw, now I want to sue him too.
It’s wonderful to get to actually see Fi and Jane at work!
Yeah. You can get in . If you tick the appropriate boxes....
Funny how IHNFY can attack a football pundit over Qatar World Cup, and the Daily Fail can do a job on Beckham, but neither attack the BBC/ITV for covering the World Cup, or the England team for going. Yes, baffling.
He is like a barrister that turned into a journalist .
Where were the rumors about Blair and Thatcher? Clickbait!!
I had no idea what Jane and Fi were like IRL until the voices in the interview here. Listening just to the radio for years.
Hypocrisy? What does he do with all his money??
If he's 'very old', God knows what I must be.. Stop saying it, Ian!
Self hate is a terrible thing.
It works because of freedom of speech. Shouldn't be an issue in a democracy.
I like Ian Hislop, saw him at Malvern Theatre on "Spike". Brilliant.
Looks like Jeremy Clarkson. Come back Hislop.
Nice to see 'er off Fortunately free of the shackles
One being Nicola Sturgeon is John Majors love child with a certain female politician. Now I'm not saying this is true (cos it isn't). But it could be...
Toby Jones should play the older Ian in his biopic. 🙂
SO YOU DIDNT KNOW ABOUT Saville B S
There was a time when Private Eye was anti- establishment. Those days are long gone.
I disagree. But do by all means provide some argument and supporting evidence.
@@playingdominoes You are welcome to believe whatever you want. There is not a law against it. YET.
@@williamjohnston4666 what sort of a response is that??
@@gingervirus2988 Its MY response. What else would you expect ?
Hislop actually looks very like Jeremy Clarkson these days when you squint a little
Quite funny Hislop talking about being employed by the BBC, since he used to earn £20 000 per episode for Have I got news for you.
Pls don't bring facts and hypocrisy into it.
Actually Ian's salary is paid to him by Hat Trick Productions who make the show for the BBC, and in fact Hat Trick Productions is paid for by BBC Studios, the commercial arm of the BBC, so in a way, his salary is not entirely funded by the licence fee.
Clickbait title, but a quite interesting clip.
The hypocrisy is the worst?
How can someone consider themselves independent when they get hundreds of thousands a year from them??
Depends on whether you let the money change what you say about them; I don't think Ian does.
For God sake give it a rest!
Fi and Jane would definitely NOT be employed by the BBC
in today's climate. Middle class , white , Oxbridge ...?!?
I think not . They were lucky to be among the last generation
to enjoy their privileged status.
Shame we didn’t know this when Blair was in power. Barb
Is that the old bbc voice of woman’s hour interviewing him?
I believe he is an admirable man in every way except modesty . Glad he is still there though .
"I'm not going to put words in your mouth but..." Proceeds to do that and then *her* exact words become the video's title🤦🤦
The ones about Blair and the EU and immigration were true .
Just love Hislop because he always tells the truth. Never ever prints fake news. Just brilliant.
Fi has a lush voice .
Thought it was a story about Maggie being you know what by Tony.Oh well just as well ,it could have given nightmares to many.
Fi Glover. Ear candy.
ie Not a National tour
Let's get rid of licence fee for over 21s 😂😂😂
How many ‘erms’ in this interview?
he is most enjoyable.
Referendum 100% ( we demand a referendum to only allow people into politics who have 100% of their assets in England! Elected or not!)
So, if he'll work for anyone, is Hislop off to GBN next?
One pass into comedy and the BBC was to have gone to Oxford or Cambridge …even Ian Hislop whom I admire went to Oxford
The way Ian ripped apart Gary Neville on HIGNFY was pretty awesome.
Unfortunately I think you'll find a lot of the rumours now-a-days are true.
Blair, still looking for Weapons of mass destruction.
Halabja
some grass roots in’s and out’s....
Such an old darling.
‘We’ Hislop 😂
Why the sudden and unexpected reference to SM? The Audio is poor. A good edit maybe?
But isn't hypocrisy one of the main attributes mentioned on the left wing application form?
Do people still take out Super Injunctions? I don't understand the difference. 🤔 The commercial aspects of being silenced worry me greatly. I want to know if the Westmonster lot are in business with their pals and relatives. That matters.
My 2 favorite voices on Radio 4 and now on Times Radio BBC loss, your gain. I have had a (hand) love affair with Jane and also Fi for years (if only they knew).
Is it me, or is that Jeremy Clarkson? 🤔
So what about these austerity deaths Ian. 130,000 recorded vunerable people from 2011 to 2017. That was question time.
It is written about extensively in Private Eye. I prescribe a subscription.
None of them WAS true? Surely!
Don’t spread it if you can’t prove it lol 😂
And religious hypocrites are the worst kind.
There is, and always has been, a role for satirists in turning the spotlight on vice, corruption and humbug, as Hislop says. We can admire the satirist but let's not be so naive as to be taken in by their angelic protestations of motive. As with most things, money is what gets the satirist out of bed in the morning and, as someone who has made more money than most from this trade, Hislop is the last person on earth to be lecturing us about hypocrisy when he crouches there blinking and trying to claim that it is all about the public interest..
Love you Ian 💘
