- Kitakata City loves ramen so much that locals eat it for breakfast! In fact, Kitakata City in Fukushima has more ramen shops per capita than ANYWHERE ELSE in Japan! Kitakata Ramen is a way of life.
I visit what’s probably Kitakata City’s most famous ramen shop...Bannai Shokudo. I of course order the house special...a ramen with a light pork bone soup and super thick noodles - a Kitakata speciality!
This is video no. 12 in a NORTHERN JAPAN RAMEN Series....covering ramen bowl #29 on the trip!

About Me:
I'm Frank from 5 AM Ramen. Born in Tokyo and raised on ramen, I eat over 350 bowls a year. To me, ramen is the ULTIMATE SOUL FOOD.

Would you start your day with a piping hot bowl of ramen?
Absolutely, we would go to Ramen alley in Tokyo station for breakfast. I’d get the Tsukemen my wife would get the gluten free from shop directly across the mall.
Chinese have no problem starting the day with a nice bowl of hot soup noodles. Vietnamese and Lao enjoy their rice noodles soup for breakfast. Civilized countries agree. 😉
Hell yea
100% Especially on a cold day!
Yes, I make Ramen for breakfast all the time. It's so comforting & satisfying.
What a better way to start your day by eating a bowl of ramen
Indeed! No better way to get started 😃
Amazed at the snow on the ground....wow. Nice hot bowl of ramen....mmmmm
This was last Feb. but with my backlog / editing we're almost reaching this Feb / winter 😅
Eating my breakfast ramen with egg while I watch this.
Amazing!! Thanks for watching 😊
This looks sooo yummyyyyy
So yummy!
I love ramen and watching this channel makes me crave for one.
Happy to hear it - thanks for watching!
Just for the noodles alone . . . A+
This style has you written all over it 😃😃
Oooo that pork looks amazing!! Great looking breakfast ramen!
Yes and yes! A filling, fairly balanced and certainly tasty breakfast 🍜
Great content
Thanks for saying that and for watching!
I plan on opening up a ramen shop soon, and I’m gonna be focusing on kitakata style.
Let me know when you do! Hats off if you do Kitakata style, with so many people focusing on tonkotsu or miso ramen outside of Japan.
I just found your channel and started binge watching, and It's a great list of places for me to try when I visit Japan in the near future. Thanks so much!!
Likewise, thanks so much for watching and joining the #SlurpSquad!
I remember i was attending his event on airbnbonline managed by my company yesterday, and his story about ramen was so-mesmerizing. Especially when Frank showed us 19 best ramens and ramen's shops in Japan. 😋
Thanks for joining the online experience the other day! Hopefully you'll get to visit some of those places we covered when travel is back.
I would eat ramen for any meal of the day👍
Yes!! Breakfast, lunch, dinner (and in between) 😅
Breakfast Ramen?!? I would of never thought. That's sounds yummy! Especially when it's cold in the morning. Can't wait for the next Ramen video.
Best way to start the day and def best when it's cold out! Thanks for watching and see you in the next video 😃
Ramen for the breakfast. Why not.... I've already had the vietnamese Pho in breakfast... Il gives you lot of energy for starting the day.
This hits like pho in that it's light but delicious. Both bowls great ways to start the day!
Mmmm!!!!.....baby!
You said it 😃
Also, had a chance to speak more in this ramen shop, since there was no pressure to eat and leave!
I was at the Buena Park branch the weekend after opening weekend. Two hours to get a table. A couple that used the ATM nearby even walked over to check out what's up with the queue, got curious, wanted to queue up, but I told them we've been there an hour and they decided to just get udon next door.
Oh wow - quite the contrast from the video. Kitakata Ramen Bannai (unlike the historical branch I visited) is very much a simple chain here (a tasty one at that)...but over there it sounds like a proper dining experience.
I've never thought of having breakfast ramen, but it sounds (and looks!) amazing.
If there was ever a bowl for breakfast ramen, this is it!
This is the first time by coincidence that I just prepared one of the instant ramen packs I ordered from your store, started eating it and saw your video was just published! (Hakodate shio ramen). This somehow made the whole experience even better!
Perfect timing! Even tho the bowl in the video is shoyu, it hits more like a shio...better matching the Hakodate Shio ramen you're eating 😃. Glad to hear it added to the experience!
Oh man I can feel it nourish my body and soul! What a great way to start your day!
You summed it up! Those springy noodles add a spring to your step 😃
Hi Frank, I would most definitely have ramen for breakfast, lunch and dinner!! I love all noodles (not a noodle snob) here lol. 😊🇨🇦
Ramen all day! Haha, you're a noodle devotee 👍👍
Thank you for uploading
I studying English.
I’m uploading videos with Japanese and English.
I learned from you videos
Likewise, thank you for watching! Hopefully the videos are useful towards your studies - keep up the good work 👍
So true it doesn't matter if you eat bacon and bread for breakfast or ramen with charshu :) both good once in a while to start the day with. The negi ramen looked really good as well on the menu :)
Exactly! Simply replacing one breakfast staple with another. I was eyeing that negi ramen too 😅
I live in Kitakata and YES
Really? That's fantastic - you're lucky 😃
We live near the Kitakata Ban Nai in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. When it opened in about 2018-19, it was great. The food was consistently good and the staff was very friendly. Unfortunately, since covid things have gone down hill. We noticed the staff was turning over about every 3 to 6 weeks. The food wasn't as good and the staff became cranky. This video gives me hope. Perhaps I should venture further out to find good ramen.
That's a shame! Hope they eventually return to former glory.
Thankfully this place hasn't had the same issues. Might be worth the pilgrimage 😊
When i was in Japan and my brother came to visit, we ate ramen for breakfast and dinner almost every day for 5 week.. however our breakfast was at 11
That is impressive! With all those bowls, you could have begun your own ramen channel 😃.
This makes me think an Americanized breakfast ramen would taste good too, with pork belly or ham or sausage, and egg, maybe spinach and chives and mushrooms so it's a bit like an omelette in ramen form. I need to try that, and of course the original Japanese version.
That would be interesting - an open face omlette as a ramen! I think the most interesting bowls outside of Japan will be ones pushing the boundaries (vs replicating what's done here).
That seems like a great way to get set up for the day! I would definitely go for that for breakfast, just maybe not at 7am! For me, that's closer to my bedtime 😂
Could make it a bedtime meal instead? 😃
@@5AMRamen Yes, because it's a little lighter it would make a good late-evening meal too!
Great voice.
😊😊
I think it's my American viewpoint but I am surprised the breakfast ramen doesn't include an egg. Still would be thrilled to have that for breakfast.
It's intersting - this style of ramen (Kitakata) doesn't normally feature an egg, even as an extra. Maybe they figured the protein from the pork is enough 😋
Another good video! Do they have a branch in Kyoto station ramen street? I remember eating at a bannai shokudo before with a lot of meat arranged like a flower there! It was a good experience but never did it via breakfast.
Thanks for watching! You are correct - they did have a branch there...but unfortunately they closed this year 😞 .
Kyoto has really been feeling the pinch since it relies so much on domestic and inbound tourism. You'll just need to visit the original location (in the video) when the borders reopen and for breakfast 😃
@@5AMRamen Aww so sad, yes i hear kyoto is doing quite bad. But then again lots of tourism locations is not doing well over this pandemic. Hope japan will open up soon!
That ramen looked delicious. If I hadn't stuffed myself full of candy, I would be making a bowl of instant ramen right now. By the way, Happy Halloween! It would be cool if you did a Halloween ramen video in a place like Ikebukuro to see if any shops are decorated for it and see if anyone is slurping ramen in costume.
Happy Halloween!! Haha, you did what you're supposed to do on Halloween 😃.
Unfortunately I didn't make a Halloween video this year...I should probably do one next year, with all the things you mentioned AND I'm sure there'll be some ramen shops with special Halloween bowls, maybe even in Ikebukuro!
Slurping hot ramen on a cold day Is the life! Btw is Fukuoka not the ramen capital?
It is is the life! Right - I think it depends on the metric for that "capital" title. Kitakata has more ramen shops per capita than any other city, Tokyo has the most number of ramen shops and variety, and as you know, Fukuoka is an AMAZING ramen city, with ramen such a big part of the city's culture.
@@5AMRamen Crazy!!
does tokyo do breakfast ramen too? i never heard of 7am opens there!
Definitely more rare in Tokyo - but there are a few places. Will need to feature them in a future video! Usually in Tokyo it's ramen shops that are open all night (the 5 AM Ramen bowl 😁).
Since I have learned how to make ramen well, it is really difficult to find good noodles with good broth. One or the other can be good, but I would rather be more noodle-centric. What do you like best, Frank?
Good question - a lot of ramen shops in Japan tend to focus on the soup...because the noodles are something they can outsource, with there being many quality noodle suppliers. I tend to gravitate towards the soup...but when those noodles are special (like in Kitakata), it's HEAVEN. But I wouldn't be happy having wonderful soup and bad noodles...or vice versa. As highlighted above, I think we're spoiled here when it comes to the noodles - that is, good noodles are always a given. Maybe for this reason the soup is given a lot of attention. But it's all relative...my soliloquy is done 😅
People say they haven't thought about having ramen for breakfast but how many people have eaten cold pizza for breakfast? I don't like American breakfasts so I've had ramen in the morning many times.
There you go! Ramen is one of the right ways to start the day, which you're already following 😊
Can you link me that website that reviews the ramen shops?

Here's the EAST Japan ramen list:

so whats the difference between kitakata style vs tokyo style ? i thought what was considered "classic" in tokyo is a shoyu based flavor, i am a confused foreigner lol, i need help!
The biggest difference is the noodles - classic Tokyo ramen noodles are much thinner and have less water content / bounce vs Kitakata. Otherwise, the shoyu base is indeed the same! Many regions have shoyu ramen but with little or even big differences. Another example - Kyoto Shoyu ramen soup is heavier than Tokyo's!
@@5AMRamen i see! Thanks for taking the time to give a thoughtful reply
Gimme 2
Right on!
