Maynard is the master of the double and triple entendre... writing lyrics that can be interpreted in 2, 3 and sometimes 4 different ways - that all depends on how deeply you dive into each Tool song. He often uses sexuality and religion as metaphors in his writing but, amazingly, they seem to always have a much deeper meaning when you dissect them. Maynard has stated that this song is actually about opening up emotionally.
which one has 4 meanings?
@@tacotacotacobajablast6821 The Pot has a ton of different interpretations. From the song being about Led Zeppelin, Marijuana, Government Hypocrisy, a particular judge that used to sentence weed smokers to crazy long sentences and was found out later he smoked pot, there's even a theory that the song is actually part 3 of "wings" "who are you to waive your finger..." Maynard is talking about his own hypocrisy after flaming the "ghouls" in Wings... it goes on and on in that song.
i've heard it was a critique on the culture here in america of overstimulation - like short attention spans and instant gratification. more or less how that destroys our minds, much like this act possibly destroying bodies. so theres another meaning for the list.
well same thing can be said about a lot of different songs, generally in rock. Individual interpretation opens up the possibility of many different interpretations but I also understand your point about Maynard. Fewer people have been able to write as masterful lyrics as Maynard has. The metaphors, poetic lines, are all so genius, it makes one wonder for a long time about a lot of different things.
this song is Freudian. Forty Six and 2 is Jungian.
This is the first song on the Aenima album, which is about beginning the journey of self healing and the inner work that leads to spiritual enlightenment. This song (IMO) is about exploring the things inside of you that make you uncomfortable (your trauma) in order to start healing. As the album progresses he metaphorically eulogizes his old self, discovers love outside of himself, rescues his inner child, and works with his shadow self to become a more complete version of himself. All of this sets up the next album, Lateralus, which continues and furthers the journey of personal and spiritual growth. 🌀
So glad someone else realises this 🤘
Now THAT is saying something.
🎯
Really? its not about fisting....literally?....stink fist....
What about °4..…..?
Really, it's not about fist...ing, literally?
What about ° 4....
To be broken by TOOL means your mind is working to understand what they are bringing. It will be a long deep road and we are so grateful you are contemplating the journey ❤
"shout out if youve had your prostate exam"... Fucking broke me. Probably woke me neighbors with laughter.
Well done sir, well done
This dropped in 1996!!
And has not hit the ground yet!
The look of confusion the whole time is brilliant 😂😂
The look on the beginning of this song, trying to anticipate what’s going to happen staring with your mouth wide open then when the drop hits your brain analyzes, it says fuck it and tell your head to start banging. You don’t know what it is. All you know is it’s fucking brilliant.
Vicarious is the song that more reflects your interpretation. But really good stuff fella. Glad you're repping Tool.
Like a painting or a poem, whatever it means to you IS its meaning.
couldn’t agree more! i don’t like it when people claim to have a definitive one-size-fits-all explanation of a song. Especially when in my own personal experience, the same song can mean different things to me at different points in my life.
@@TeddyGreyOS that’s what I love about TOOL. They’ll intentionally leave an idea pretty open ended in most songs so you can choose what really resonates with you. While Stinkfist could be about overstimulation and desensitization from media and technology (which I can relate to). It could also be about straight up fisting (which I haven’t yet been able to relate to) 😂
Some folks say that it's about being so over stimulated that nothing effects him anymore so he keeps pushing how far he can go with his lover, first he slips a finger in, then a knuckle and so on all in an attempt to feel something in himself from the action but he is so desensitized that he gets to the point of being in up to his shoulder all in an attempt to feel some kind of reaction in himself from how insanely depraved it has gotten, he has to take it to that extreme to get there....but that's the great thing about tool, there's a million ways you can read into most of their lyrics.
Yes, and could very well be an analogy for how desensitised society has become.
On the same album, 'Aenima' there's a German cake recipe (read out to some industrial beats and cheering crowds so that it sounds like a political rally). So your Spag Bol comment is actually very relevant!
Such a strange thing, the amount of joy i find in watching another guy discover the music i've loved since the early 90s. Cheers from Denmark :)
The thing with Tool is that each of them, all 4, are so incredibly good at what they do. 🌀
I feel like you'll enjoy parabol/parabola and Right in Two.
Yes!!!! More Tool please. Love your watching your reactions... I am autistic and ADHD so everything you say and how you understand it ....I am right there with you!
Keep bringing 🛠️T⚙️⚙️L🛠️🔥🔥🔥
Good for you, young brother-as an old woman who’s dissatisfied with modern music, I take great pleasure in watching you lot find the awesome $hit I sang my a$$ off to when I was a girl looking for my personal score. Blessings
The main point of the song, I think, is revealed in the lines "something kinda sad about the way that things have come to be. Desensitized to everything, what became of subtlety?" Great stuff as always, Teddy! All the best to you and all the people of the UK in these weird times!🙏
Very few get it at first. The rabbit hole is deep my friend
Come in
Finger first 😉
To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Tool...
About time man!! Tool is the way to go
I think you made a good choice reacting to the lyric video; the meaning of Tool's music is really hard to parse when you're watching the absolute hysteria that is their music videos. That said, you should DEFINITELY check it out now that you don't have to worry about focusing on the lyrics.
Nice my favorite tool track! You know it’s a good track when you’re upset it’s over. It’s longer in concert though! They extended it as a treat for the concert goers.
More Tool
Tool Army Unite!
I always enjoy your take on Tool video. Sometimes I want you to do a second listen a live version of the same song. Just so you can see the magic.
Spiral out TG, keep going 🌀
Always ready for more metal reactions, especially Tool
I WANT MORE TOOL!!
I don’t know if I’ve posted this here before …but you have a very nice singing voice ❤️
I noticed that too...
Here for it! (the Tool, that is)
Yay TOOL Reaction!!! And yes, the videos are amazing!!!! \m/ \m/
Ive always associated this song with drug/sex addiction. When you've had so much it becomes numb and boring so you just keep going to very more extreme instances to fill a bottomless void.
I always think of quagmire😂
@@Cheesesteak70-d1v gigitty
There is a tool song where he explains how to make brownies with no eggs (sung in German)
"Turn around and take my hand"
We aren't holding hands. That one seems to elude 90% of the reactors for some reason.
I believe you would benefit highly from knowing MJK's writing style. He doesn't write lyrics and have the band put music to them. The band composes or mostly composes a song and then he sits down and comes up with rythms, syllables, and then lyrics to fit the music. I've also heard he's typically under the influence of some sort when doing this. But no matter what, the dude has a unique style and it absolutely rocks. Glad you're diving into them more.
The madness of this. And that MJK has enough in his brain to sustain not one. two. But three as in thrice bands that are each distinctive & unique. He's impossible & absurd.
At least on its face before alternate interpretations I believe the song is about excess of anything in general. You start off happy with a little, but then you do/use it so much that's not enough anymore. You need more of it to get the same feeling you had before. That's the stinkfist analogy. At first you get stimulation from the finger then its not enough till eventually your past the elbow to try to get the same feeling.
5:55. When I realized that he was saying, (remember, we had no lyrics from this band when they came out) 🌿🌸
The drama of this band. They're exquisite.
I feel like you wearing your go bag is like preparation in case you are overcome by fire & impossible greatness. As an "old" & long time TOOL initiate, it's pure joy watching you dig into this steak. 🍻
15:30 Funny you should mention recipes, Tool's 'Die Eier von Satan' is a weird one about making a cake using hashish (satan's balls/eggs). Lyrics are spoken in German.
You beat me to it dude! I was going to say the exact same thing, well done!👍
@@Prime_Mover2112 Chur bro - can't get enough of Tool... and Teddy's reactions to them are MINT, ey! 🤣😂👍
You know I’ve heard so many translations of what that is from wedding cookies to cake to hash brownies
@@Cheesesteak70-d1v haven't heard of many wedding cookies made with Turkish Hashish, however, would certainly be FUNererer! 😆🤙
I like how we all heard him go "I could listen to MJK sing a Spag Bol recipe" and we're all just like... funny you should say that 🙂👀
Always TOOL 🥳 Maynard has a book - A Perfect Union of Contrary Things published in 2016. I've been a TOOL head since 96 and they always speak volumes to my psyche. 🥰
I want to suggest a bunch of songs because I love them all but one that keeps jumping forward is Jambi.
Jambi is my jam, b. for real. it's legit.
I have soooooooo been waiting for you to do this song!!!!!
This song (imo) is about the slow violation of aomeones boundaries to take advantage if them for your own satisfaction...but nothing is ever good enough. Also this person eho is violating is convincing the ither person he loves them when he cant feel anything anymore
When he writes in the first person, it's usually something sinister and controlling I've noticed.
MJK Rotates from singing through tht bullhorn effect and his reg vocals(think Eugloy) this is the song that the crowd always sings together at the end…the last line 11:18
"whats happening? Is he trapped inside of an arshole? Is that what stinkfist means? He is the stink?" OMFG im dying🤣🤣🤣💀
Tool lyrics are meant to mean whatever it means to each individual ❤ best band ever
I know Maynard said that once in an interview, but personally, I think he is full of it. He had an idea in his head when he wrote it (or any of them). If someone wants to interpret it in their own way, fine 🤷🏻. But there are very specific messages that are not nebulous.
@LanceThompsonKssooner it means something specific to him yes, but he leaves it open for US....if you can't grasp that I really don't care😉
@susiejo143 If you can't grasp his very specific analogy, I don't care, nor am I surprised 🤷🏻 Don't hurt yourself trying to over analyze it.
@LanceThompsonKssooner I def won't I'm too busy to even ponder it thanks anyway
@@susiejo143 I'm sure you won't. There is no need, since you believe the song means whatever you want it to 🤔
OMFG, I literally just laughed till tears came out, I LOVE YOUR REACTIONS BRO! 🤘💀😈
Bro, your meaning and how you felt was exactly how Tool writes their songs. The meanings change for me over time depending on what is happening
11:30 Your eyebrows when Maynard sings "Elbow deep inside the borderline" 😅
Yessir!!! Please do Parabola. I’m some what new to your channel. Great work man.
Gotta make sure it’s Parabol/Parabola together. 😍
Another epic tool reaction from you bruv. Another song I’ve listened for 20 years you’ve made me think of the lyrics in a different light…. Again
Keep going down the Tool rabbit hole!
Okay, Teddy. I subscribed. You have a charisma and curiousity that i can get behind.
You twirling your finger..🤣🤣🤣. Anyway, welcome to Tool. You are now hooked.
Whoa am I the first to watch this reaction!?!
Don’t get all excited, not by much😂😂🤘🤘
@Kati_all_of_the_days I love his reactions, and it shocked me to no views...I was like holy crap lol. Never been the first to watch any video so caught me off guard. But hey everyone enjoy.
Alice in Chains “man in the box”
Hey….you mentioned it lol
i meant this : ruclips.net/video/LE5UktH4iYY/видео.htmlsi=ha8AfLA_ivVwriuk 😂😂
YES! My suggestion FINALLY made it - thanks Teddy!
Teddy reacting to Tool …. I tell you it was an instantaneous click!!! LOVE tool and love you too TG
My favorite band! Maynard is awesome! Have seen Tool twice. It is an experience and a half! Amazing!
This was the last song on this years tour. Was a good "goodbye". :D
The song ends:
"Oh no!"
That's Tool in a nutshell
Like a war within yourself, over change. Change can hurt but it's something you'll get used to.
Died laughing when you said. For any of you men over 30. Lmao
For me, this song has always been about a person subjugating an other, relentlessly being unsatisfied they cannot subjugate them enough.
The pause as soon as he read the “finger deep within the borderline” lyric is amazing 🤣🤣
He may not have a song about Bolognese, but he does have one with a special brownie recipe....
Aenima lyrics much clearer should do that one 🔥
The music video is actually really good. They usually take a lot of time and effort to make their music videos, which is why there really aren't a whole lot of them. But they really enhance the atmosphere of their songs.
The more you get the more you want. An ode to overindulging
Or a warning
This song always makes me laugh.
i remember seeing this live at okc in February and it was literally one of the greatest comments of my life
Solid choice. Arguably their signature track
the unusual chord progressions come from him designing the lyrics around the already phenomenal music that he's been given in it's borderline finished form.
Yay! I've been waiting for you to react to this!! 😅🤘🏻 Best reaction!!
IMO this song is about nothing ever being enough, and satisfaction being temporary. We push our pleasure seeking into indecency and it eventually controls and consumes us and makes up who we are.
Gets ya thinking, that's the point
BRO you need to do more TOOL they are the shit and they will fuck with your head 😅 this is perfect for you to dive into haha . Will the full meaning of anything TOOL do make sense at first NO 😂 I am a massive fan for about ten years . And new meaning and love will always jump out in there talent . Thay are amazing there music is epic and vocals to the back , what a fucking treat . Watch the live/proper vidz will blow your balls off 😎
This would be a good one to ask a psychology professor about,so I will.
So excited to see you react to tool!! They're incredible and so layered, maynard is just something else honestly. Idk if it would have as much traffic for you but i'd love to see you react to his other projects eventually too, Puscifer has some really amazing songs.
A banger
Fist then shoulder, you keep digging but the same turnover start again, you will never fix things depending on something (and that's addiction), you should always face problems not running away. I am currently in that state, and Tool songs are my tools to improve my inner self !
Just after "slip away...", if you listen carefully, he repeats "Chupa, Minha, Pica, Pichu... Chupa, Minha, Pica, Pinto", which is vulgarity in Portuguese
And it was on the radio edit!
❤yeesssssssss lets gooooooooo🤘🤘🤘
Edit: for spelling (and still might not have it)
It is SIMPLE: it has ALL been done. I, in my 50's, love Tool and have listened from the beginning. They know that everything they are selling (musically and lyrically) has been done millions of time before. They, simply packaged it better and more honestly than most before.
Maynard is, in my opinion, literally pulling someone out of their own butt. ' Turn around and take my hand'. He is waking people up. It is not about war. It is about being pulled out of your own issues and morasses. 'Shoulder deep in the borderline', he is trying to save someone from their self-destruction.
Not war. It is just saving a loved one from their own delusions. If a person offers their own body parts to save you (reaching shoulder deep when you might not get it back) shows love and intention to help another out..
It is awesome to see someone being introduced. Good on you. Brother I get you and what some have done to your country. I see borders destroyed (not in expensive neighborhoods tho) and have felt your pain. Be as well as you can and God bless.
Check out: die eier von satan by Tool. Hey, you mentioned a recipe. LOL.
I think it's about society being complacent about their lives, letting others sway their views on politics and morals, and letting others define who they are and what they should be like. Never doing the work to find their true selves.
I'm not aware of a Tool song explaining how to make spaghetti bolognese.. but you should check out their song Die Eier von Satan.
Either way, it's beautiful
When I was a young lad, and first heard this song. I thought it was beautiful. A song about desensitisation and overwhelming the mind until you long for peace. Longing for a connection to help you feel something real again.
Then years later I realised it's actually just about being fisted...
First time I've heard that parable:
'If the product you consume is free, then you are the product.'
So many layers to that, and so many ways to take it. Most insightful thing I've heard in a good while.
Thank you for sharing 🙇♂️
I know the video's only a day old, but I'm surprised I didn't see any other comments on that
It’s a shame not all can be as attentive as you! Thank you for truly listening and I’m glad you can take something extra away from this reaction! 🙏
Yees, more Tool please! :D
MORE TOOL PLEASE!!
It’s TOOL… the song is never gonna mean what it sounds like it obviously should mean 😉
Your background music reminds me a bit of their song *Culling Voices* from 2019. Perhaps listen to that one. When they play the intro live, Danny plays a guitar that looks tiny on his 6'5" frame
Not sure why but watching you silently contemplating it had me dying.
Always here for Tool. Yes, always do lyric videos! Their videos can be very distracting for a first listen.
Your vibe was telling me to wake the fuck up
Watching folks work out the math on the title to this song is why reaction videos were invented
And the journey has started 😁
Next is PARABOL/PARABOLA
It's about desensitization of everything bad. He uses "fisting" as a metaphor.
The lyrics to their song Dier von Satan are just a cookie recipe read in German. Maybe you should try to read into those lyrics too.😂
i think its bread, grreat song! lol
stink This lyrics remember to me those prostate cancer analysis when we passed over 40's. _I don't want ... I just need it_ and the physician saying _Relax just let me slip through the borderline._ hahahaha
This is the song that got me into Tool. I was like 14 and had no idea what it meant though.
12:03 "Time" flies when ya havin' fun, 'ey bruv!
