I watch and save this man’s drum videos because he plays his drums. That’s it. He just plays the drums. I can count on him to play the music. Nothing extra. He just hits the drums; the right way. Only the good stuff from him. I will return again and again for this.

Dooood whaaaaat. Holy cow this is amazing. There seems to be more clarity on this take, and I believe this is the closest I've heard anyone get to that iconic Bonzo sound on this song.

I had the same experience you did - I put on headphones with the previous mix and found it to be way too boomy. Like so much in life, when I came back around to this one, I made sure that less is more!

@@RoboToast03 It was actually just a lot of experimenting with stock reverb plugins in ProTools. I used two overhead condenser mics and one in front of the drum about three feet off the ground and about eight feet in front of the kick. That gave me the whole image of the kit, and then I messed with the reverb from there. This is the end result of a lot of tinkering 🤗

This is, by far, the best cover video of any instrumentalist covering a drum part.
Your tempo lock in the tune is incredible. When I listen to each measure, there not one hint of tempo variation; you are submerged in Bonham's part...Your instrumental voice is not just that of the drum part but that of Bonham's character.
You look so relaxed in your playing. It is no wonder when Bonham sat at the drums, the rest of the guys would be confident that Bonham's foundation would be the best possible sound, in the studio or during a live performance.
It is so admirable of you to dedicate your talent to the studying and performance of the sound of John Bonham.

Nice heavy feel...what did you use to get the delay/echo ?
Believe it or not, it was just from a stock reverb in ProTools! I was messing around with different delay and reverb settings and came across one that seemed to emulate the effect, so I took that and started tweaking it to get it to where it is here! At some point, I'd like to revisit how I did this (I have to remember, since I originally recorded this back in 2014) and make a video on it!

I watch this video and the Bonham solo with you on the drums almost every day. Love seeing you play. I feel it's better than Bonham. He took rudiments and applied them to other drums. Revolutionary for the time, but Revolutionary I'm not sure. Was maybe for the time, but applying it to other drums isn't. Buddy Rich, and Gene Kupra did it many years before anyone knew who John Bonham was.
Still my absolute favorite Zep song ever. Who cares about Stairway to Heaven when this song exists? I just think it had something to Bonham's haunting yet driving beat during this song.
Is he using echo/delay on this cuz I think that's what JB actually did ,in a high acoustic downstairs foyer at the bottom of a staircase in an old house in England somewhere(could be wrong about location)if so someone please let me know ,btw this guy is good,I can dig it 🤘

It sounds 👂🏻 great and just like the real deal because he uses the exact same drum kit 🥁, cymbals and set-up. Oh, and of course because he's an amazing drummer anyone that can exactly replicate Bonham's playing is amazing, because he was always on the backbeat like JB had some drinks 🍺 in him to slightly slow him down. That's my theory 🤔.

I'm sure you're aware of this, but other folks have been able to get by the youtube copyright computers somehow; and I'm guessing it's because the background music is turned down low enough in the mix to get by without being detected. Do you do your own engineering?
Thanks so much, Derek! I do all the engineering for these videos, although I have no formal training; It's all trial-and-error. For this, I stuck the large diaphragm condenser mics as high above the kit as I could get them and then put a small diaphragm condenser about five feet away from the kick (just out of view of the camera). I mixed those three together to get a decent sound and then applied a stock reverb in ProTools do get that Binson Echo effect.
D-Verb? Can you share settings? Sounds fantastic!
If that is not pushing and pulling what started out as a straight 2/4 ragtime walking shuffle as done my memphis Minni and then taken to a whole new level by Bonham, I don't know what is.. So much gofr Ginger Bakers backstabbing criticism of Bonham and Moon.

It's definitely an unfortunate cloud that hangs over what would otherwise be an embarrassment of riches of talent for the rest of us. I won't deny thinking a little less of Baker's drumming after hearing how concerned he was with letting other people know how poorly he thought of some of his contemporaries or certain styles of music. But at the end of the day, my soul connects with some of his playing. More so with Moon, and then WAAAAY more so with Bonham!
Memphis Minnie warned us the levee would break, and Bonham went straight-up nuclear on it...
